Message from Director

I feel privileged to address the illustrious alumni of a great Institution on the occasion of

their annual meeting in the Golden Jubilee Year of the Institute. The Institute has gained

its fame and brand name through the success of its alumni in all walks of life. They have

demonstrated their brilliance in every profession they have taken up. And there is hardly a

profession that our alumni have not pursued: Academics, Industry, Corporate Life,

Entrepreneurship, Theatre, Literature, Journalism and even Spiritual Pursuits - they have

done it all! And they have not only provided leadership of the highest calibre, but also set

new standards of excellence in every domain they have practiced. You certainly belong to

an exclusive, elite class and the Institute takes pride in your achievements.

These 50 years of academic life at IIT Delhi have been eventful and in some instances

transformational. The present publication, Golden Moments, which I believe is based on

authentic information from the Golden Jubilee Committee of the Institute, captures

some of the main events in its life, and should be of interest to the alumni. It is an occasion

to celebrate, and the Institute is doing it in a grand way through many activities about

w h i c h y o u c a n l e a r n m o r e f r o m t h e G o l d e n Ju b i l e e w e b s i t e

www.goldenjubilee.iitd.ernet.in, and even participate in any manner which appeals to

you. But more importantly, it is an occasion to introspect and plan for the future - to make

the Institute one of the most preferred destinations for students, faculty and dedicated

staff, and to reach new heights in education and research leadership.

All of you as accomplished alumni have a role to play in this task. I invite you all to

contribute in any manner that appeals to you. The Institute will be happy to consider your

proposals.

In the coming years, we also hope to see a much greater engagement of our alumni with

each other, and with the Institute. May the friendships and bonds created at IIT Delhi

continue to bring great happiness to you and future generations of alumni and enrich not

only their own lives, but also touch the life of millions through their work and dedicated

efforts in nation building and service to humanity!

Try getting out!”.Trust you would appreciate our attempt-inspite of its shortcomings in the face of usual limitations of Insufficient: Data, Time, Space, support staff, etc. Thus, We have begun the journey – by touching the tip of the Iceberg.& We have Innovated-akin Wiki:Golden Moments would also be uploaded on the IITDAA Website -& all Alumni, Faculty, Students are invited to send in further Data to be added-and by the Year end we would all have a Souvenir that we all wanted. My thanx are due to IITDAA EC: Shashi Munjal, H.R.Vaish, C.K.Jain - Office Staff: Satish Chauhan, Narayan Singh Samant - IITD Students: Himanshi Baranwal, & Monika Bhaskar - Thank you all, for your encouragements & pitching in.

ANIL K. VIJ IITDAA EC Member

Our Alma Mater completes 50 years on 21st August 2011. Looking back, we see with pride the jewels who went through the portals of this great institute – alumni who have spread to the corners of the globe, teachers/professors, leaders in technologies and sciences in fields unknown to most, leaders in management of private, public and Government organizations, entrepreneurs, authors, leaders in spirituality, lawyers, film makers, singers and musicians, venture capitalists and what have you; winners of the most prestigious awards, nationally and internationally. Could any founder have asked for more?

With 35,000 alumni, growing at over 1,000 per year, we need to expand our vision. 1+1 is not 2 but 11 and 1-1 is not zero but –ve. The Japanese are a great example of the success of team-work. Collectively which problem before this great Nation and the World, can we not solve? In the Global order, India is emerging as a formidable player; amongst the top few in the World. Our alumni should help to hasten this process; through our collective synergies not only make it be there but sustain and nurture it. In this special year, let us pledge to make this happen - THINK BIG.

We need to become a major player in developing/fostering technologies resulting in inclusive growth of the poorest Indian. Service to Man is Service to God. With the increasing disparity, we are sitting on a time bomb. In our interest and that of future generations we need to solve this problem urgently by bridging the mismatch of resources – People with ideas, without resources, and people with resources but no solutions. When we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, IITD and its alumni should be recognized for development of cutting edge technology for the masses.

I am thankful to our President Shashi Munjal and our Editor Anil K. Vij for their special efforts to bring out this publication & also for their successful Fund Raising . With your cooperation, the Association can bring out a comprehensive publication to highlight special achievements of alumni.Kindly help update the data on the web-site and provide highlights of your career.

HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, laid the foundation stone of the Institute on January 27, 1959.Academic Council of Delhi University approves a five year integrated UG course on 17 December.

Shri J.N. Moudgill is appointed as the convener of the Committee for Examinations and Syllabus.

The Foundation Day is Celebrated on January 27th, every year.

“An Institute of higher learning such a ours, if it achieve, must be sensitive to the needs of its environment. Our age is characterized by two significant factors: One is the explosion of knowledge and the other, the rising expectations of society as a result of the impact of science and technology. It is in this context that the educational objectives and experiments that are being undertaken by us must be meaningful. Education, if it is to be meaningful must

not only impart information that tends to obsolesces even before it has had time to be fully established, but also attempt to develop correct attitude and values in

life to meet new situations.Further, man in Morden

society has not only to be professionally competent and, therefore, useful to society, but also to acquire humane qualities and learn to live harmoniously with

others. It is un this situation that achieving a synthesis

between material values on the one hand, and human and spiritual values on the other, gains validity. With such an approach in education, the new generations

may wll find the answer too many of world’s problems

that defy solution today. The academic policy of this institution has been evolved in the light of this perspective”.

Director’s Report, November 3, 1966

About the Logo:

Flying atop the administrative block of IIT Delhi is a small red, blue and gray flag. Incorporated in its lower half is the Institute’s crest symbolizing a lamp, an exponential curve, a gear, an elephant head and tow flowers – the lotus and the rose. Between

them they sum up what the Institute seek to

represent. The

l a m p i s knowledge; the curve spiralling

o u t w a r d s

represents the Institute’s central theme of engineering; the encircling gear depicts the nations industry to which its students will go; the elephant represents the

city of Delhi, purity and strength; and the two flowers,

national symbol of India and England, symbolize the co-operation and close ties between the two countries that have brought the Institute in to being,

Golden Moments12

Going Back to the Beginning:Never lose sight of where you are coming from. It keeps your feet on the ground. Those were days when the future was taking form, also days of optimism, of a belief in the world and in one. Thus, we return time and time again to that stroke of the midnight hour, when, while the world slept, India awoke to light and freedom.

Actually, we go a little further back, to 1937 and the submission of a report to her Majesty’s Government in India. This report, written by two Englishman who went by the names of “ Messer Wood and Abbort, was titled “Vocational Education in India”. Within the short span of 4 years from the date of submission of that Report, the Delhi Polytechnic had opened its doors. By the summer of 1942, full time diploma courses had begun and the first batch of student wrote the examination in 1945. In 1952, the Polytechnic was affiliated to the University of Delhi and started offering degree courses in Electrical, Mechanical, Textile and Civil Engineering, Architecture, Applied Sciences (Chemical engineering) and Commerce.

In 1958, as part of the Development for the Second Five Year Plan, the Implementation Committee, under the Chairmanship of Prof. MS Thacker, Secretary, Ministry of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, decided to transfer the degree courses in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Textile Technology to new College of Engineering and Technology (CET), to be established within 5 years at a distance of 8 to 16 Km. from Kashneri Gate. On June 14, 1960, the CET was registered as a society under the 1860 Societies Registration Act. The first meeting of Board of Governors was held the same day in the conference room of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Old Mill Road, New Delhi, with Prof. Thacker in the Chair.

Leading off from here came the appointment of R.N. Dogra, Then Principle of the Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, As the Principle of CET.

It was around the same time that Prof. Thacker successfully negotiated British Assistance and Collaboration for the

college. Though the aid promised was not large, about 250,000 pounds, there were other areas of collaboration and support. More aid came the School’s way over the years until it ceased in 1974.

The First Director , Prof. R. N. Dogra (seen in the Centre) was the driving force behind the project .

On Jan 27, 1959, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh laid the foundation stone of the CET. Unfortunately it was another two years before the campus was in any shape to house the foundation stone permanently.

The site eventually allotted to the new college was approximately 138 acres to the south of Hauz Khas and west the Mehrauli Road (now Arrobindo Marg). Silhouetted against the southern skyline stood the Qutab Minar. Over the years additional land was allocated to the Institute, till it reached the present 320 acres.

On August 16, 1961, the college opened its doors to admissions for the 5-year integrated course: Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Civil Engineering, and Textile Technology. The Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affair, Prof. Humayun Kabir Inaugurated the teaching of classes.

Construction Activity carried on simultaneously. In fact, work on the eight storey main building went on until 1968, till after the first convocation which was held under a PANDAL. Today, while some construction and maintenance can still be witnessed, it is nothing compared to those frenetic days of building an educational Mecca for the country.

The First Director , Prof. R. N. Dogra (seen in the Centre) was the driving force behind the project .

Golden Moments 13

When the first batch of over 150 graduates were felicitated on the first Annual Convocation, 1966, they were addressed by no less a personage than the President of India, Dr, S, Radhakrishnan.

“Science, Technology and humanities will have to go together. There is a line which says: Sarva santra prayojaanam atma darsnam; the end of all science – technical, theoretical, applied and human – is to enable the individual to know himself ”.”We need not think that science and technology do not help us to know ourselves. The greatest discoveries are not material achievements, but are the expression of human intelligence and imagination. It is these that have brought about miracles of science, the glories of technology. And they are to be found not merely in science and technology but in humanities also. Your Director said it is the same challenge of human mind; you have to bring the same qualities to bear whether you are studying the material aspect of things or the human or the spiritual. All these things will have to be studied in the same manner. The objects may be different, but so far as your subjective attitude is concerned it is the same thing. An Indian thinker said it leads to atma darsan or self-knowledge. What is

Golden Moments16

meant is that even in sciences what we understand is the basic reality of our own nature. He tells us that the objective world is an object of investigation. We study it. What studies it is the subject, the principle of spirit, and the spirit of man which expresses itself in different ways. We all know the familiar saying; a philosopher is the spectator of all time and existence. Time and existence belong to the objective world, and the philosopher who sees, who looks at them, attends to them, is different. The moment we reduce the subject to the object, when men make themselves into things and machines ride them, then we have lost our real sprit. If there is any kind of temptation today, it is that.

The BSP Book of Records:

A hundred and six people were squeezed into D-47 Nilgiri-yes in a single seater room with the cupboard and all. Incredible (but true, says the BSP Book of Records of the IIT Delhi).

Vivek Chander rang the Institute bell for 31 minutes and 11 seconds during class hour before the chowkidar hauled him off (Chander was obviously thrilled, as he knew he’d remain in the book of records for quite some time).

M. Sinha of Aravali blew 76 smoke rings from a single Gold Flake cigarette…. Rajiv Garg (Faroo) of Nilgiri solved the Rubik’s cube 1,001 times in 23 hrs 57 min with an average of 83 sec…..and many more crazy records in this book.

The BSP Book of Records was Sanjiv Mehta’s brainchild in 1978 (he was the G.Sec., Board of Student Publication in his final year). “Sanjay in Manhattan (“Yaar, if you work in Manhattan, you must stay Manhattan-there’s no point spending much of your life commuting”) An A Grader (the last batch of the E, A+, A, B+…..system), he proceeded to Wharton for an MBA and then joined Mckenzie (the Consulting firm). Most recently, he was negotiating with a multinational for managing their investments in South and South East Asia.

“Mr. Popularity” Shyam Lal shook hands with 103 people in just under 3.5 minutes? Yes I remember, this was when he’d become G.Sc. Sports (1977). Shyam Lal was one of the few guys everyone liked in the IIT. At 6ft 7" he was basketball captain, and in the Volleyball team too. Shyam (same Mech batch as Sanjiv Mehta) passed out with a B+ (scraping through a first div.) and he too joined Mckienzie. “Shyam’s now quite senior in the company (partner level), and both Shyam and Sanjiv describe their salaries in terms of simple fractions of a million dollars a year”.

It was held in a small hall, about the size of hostel common room, attached to the staff club. Even this small hall was hardly half-full. With such a small gathering, the chat-party arrangements were obviously more than adequate.Next AGM was held in Aravali Hostel. The meeting itself was held in the dining hall while the other halves, which usually is fairer halves, played tambola in common room. The gathering was larger the previous year but not much larger. The food and beverages arrangements were again wonderfulIt must have been somewhere around 1987 or so that the executive committee committed the serious blunder of expanding the range and magnitude of association’s activities. The first mistake they made was to make printing of newsletter a regular affair. This was quickly followed by a second mistake of compiling address of a large number of alumni to whom the Newsletter was mailed regularlyThis resulted in a considerably increased awareness about AA’s activities and this awareness was immediately reflected in attendance at AGM which was several times more than previous years. Gone were the day s if cozy comfortable meeting in small hall like Aravali Hostel’s dining hall. Now the AGM has to be held in either Seminar hall or Convocation hall.

?Naren Gupta: Programmed for high Performance.Crossing a revenue of $100 million in 1996 from less than $25 million in 1991, the company is cited as amongst the best in the US by various business magazine. It came as no surprise to anybody when he was awarded the Director’s Gold Medal as well as the President’s Gold Medal for the best performance in the B.Tech. Graduating class of ‘69. Following his exemplary performance at IIT Delhi, he went on to M.S. from the California Institute of Technology and Ph.D. in engineering from Stanford in 1974. Naren views on two career families are simple: “If you are professional couple, you have a choice: make your marriage happy and full of satisfaction , or make it miserable . I believe that it easier and, of course, more fun to enjoy a happy two career marriage, with or without children.

”What are the secrets? They can be summarized in three word – Communication, Planning and Flexibility.

Open communication based on mutual respect helps both husband and wife understands their spouse’s ambitions, fear, desire, and limitations. Husbands have a special role to play here, because wives, particularly of an Indian background are often hesitant or even afraid to express their true feelings.

1997:

“Planning is the second part. You must have a plan, both short-term and long-term, that meet the needs of both partners. Yes, both of you will have to make some sacrifices, but both of you feel that the plan, if successfully implemented, will be satisfactory to you”.

“The most important issue is flexibility. With a two career family, particularly if you have children, get used to expecting the unexpected. Make the best of each unexpected situation. Communicate and plan on a regular basis, and flexibility will help you cope with inevitable plan changes to accommodate things you did not expect”.

?· Spotlight: When he helped found IITs in 1951, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minster, wanted elite that could build the great state-sponsored power plants, dam, and bridges so badly needed in the newly independent country. The planners drew on Massachusetts Institute of technology as a Model and on UNESCO for funds to build the first campus, in Kharagpur near Calcutta, in a former British prison for Indian Political detainees. Five other campuses followed. In Kanpur, Delhi, Bombay, Madras and most recently Guwahati.

?The government stands to reap huge rewards as IIT grads invest in India and draw it further into the circle of global trade and prosperity. “These Indian will play a key role in the resurgence of India”- Vijay Sahni, country head for Arthur Andersen’s India operations

This was message sent to the alumni who either joined ‘69 or left in ‘74

Time has flown. It seems like just yesterday that we were packing our bags and saying farewell at IIT, leaving for our first jobs or for higher studies. Little did it cross our minds that we may not meet again as a group for 25 years? Yes, 25 years have passed. Humko Lungi mangta.

?A new andolan is revolutionising Jwala today. In what promises, a wing of Jwalaites has launched the Lungi Promotion Association (LPA).

?LPA - Lungi-wallon Nara lagao, Nara (Pronounced narrha). The slogans being Two legs are better than one. Join the LPA. Member-s-hip open. No strings attached. -One size fits all-No LPA member will ever get caught in the zipper-Our credo has no loopholes-To Pee, lift here (instructions included)-Let's take their pants off-Switch to a Lungi, and you'll never feel like taking it off-signed Nara-in Pant (no pun intended), President, LPA.

You Can See After Death

?If you compare the range of activities of IIT Delhi Alumni Association with those of other colleges of Institutions, you would find that IITDAA is much more active with a very wide range of activities, and that is natural. After all IITs are different from other Institutions.

?Anyone can donate eyes, Age, sex etc. is of no consequence. Even if the donor was waring glasses, had undergone cataract surgery, even then the cornea can still be used for transplant. Eyes have to be removed within 6 hours of death. This is done by eye bank free of charge. The procedure takes only 10-15 minutes and leaves no scars or disfigurement. Within 72 hours lights are switched ON in the life of two blind persons, each getting transplant in one eye.

Take My Heart …….. Please!

?I remember the first time we met when I entered your cantilevered IIT Gate and was mesmerised by your architecture, gardens, and playing field. Your main building lawns, as always, were excrutiangly perfect, arranged to soften the view of the many concrete blocks and buildings behind it.

?My tin trunk rattled as the auto bumped over the Sick Bay speed breakers, and I gaped at your RCA diving board, and sped towards your red-bricked UG hostels. Winter came early that first year, as I kept pace with your regimen of notice boards, grades, practical's, minors, hostel activities, elections, OAT movies, surd shop overnights. I was always in awe of you as I'd religiously walk 12 minutes, twice a day to your altar-II E 16 or something.

?“So you have me now. Just tell me what to do, and I lay my life in your hands." Said I, the sixteen year old, to you dear IIT. Since then, I've tried to serve you as well as I could. The things I've done to win your heart!

OH: IIT DELHI by an alumnus

?It was college of Engineering and Technology when I joined in 1962. With the Chinese aggression it was upgraded to IIT and from then onwards life became interesting. We were given a room each in Shivalik Hostel. I, of course, got one of the much dreaded rooms which have their windows opening on the balcony. Ragging was in progress and you could see 'hawks' all over the place looking for 'Doves'. However, as time passed friendships developed and life in hostel became interesting. This had a severe effect on the college life. People started getting ideas and there were frequent cases of chalk-throwing on the teacher taking a period just before the lunch break, or explosion of cigarette lighter bombs or locking of class room from outside. The climax came when, in our class, the Chemistry teacher was mentally assaulted by too much noise, bench thumping and mysterious noises made by scratching of shoes on the floor accompanied by loud thunder of crackers. The whole class was fined Rs. 10/- each. Surprisingly, this only worsened the situation further.

"THE FEMININE SOUP" by A.K. Bhatia

?In the last issue of this news letter it was reported that the executive committee had discussed whether or not the girls should be allowed to visit boys rooms in their hostels.

?The cream of the nation, the IITDian are demanding unanimously that it should be allowed. The demand has been put forward through Students Affairs Council and all other General Secretaries are supporting it.

?The situation, as is clear from the stand taken up by the two parties, is that the students find it absolutely 'normal' and socially acceptable that the girl friends may visit their rooms and when so desired by them-and even if their parents do not find it alright-it should be acceptable because after all this is a case in which the students are affected not their parents. The "New Society" would accept it.

world. "All I need is on A this time", said my friend. The old grade sheet scent of lost efforts hung in the air.

"Screw the IIT yaar", said another who just wanted to get out and was biding his time. "I'll take my final grade passport and just push out from here".

But I needed more. That's right dear IIT, it wasn't really the final grade sheet that I worked for. It's You I worked for-your smile, the warm embrace of your power. In the innocent eyes of me the young adult, this power was the world.

?I became scared of the real world As I stepped out on my pre-final year factory training, I realised how far removed you'd kept me from the real world. Like the possessive embrace of an ignorant parent with his head buried in its own bosom. I think you've been away from the real world for so long that you really don't know what it's like. And I am not talking of technique and technology updates. I am talking of a real world of relating to people. I am a misfit when it comes to this.

?There's more to education than is classified in your Library Yes I am talking of educating a young adult for his first and most impressionable time. You don't just reward him for his artificial intelligence. You encourage his human intelligence. Or at least don't discourage it with your packed time table, your faculty which find the blackboard more interesting than student, your data bank of finely quantified grades-which mark the individual statistic. You know what that does to someone in love -it translates into his self-worth. And it is through this quantification that he relates (or tries to relate) to the real world.

So shape up. Do your part. Learn to relate to the real world, and then encourage me to learn to do it. And you will be amazed at what a JEE cleared chap can do with this right relationship.

P D K by O P Marwah

?She. She was a student of M.Sc. (Physics). We were all studying for M. Tech. in radar engineering and thought studies in Physics were quite another view of life. We were so materialistic and addicted to cost benefit analysis that we thought all advanced studies in Physics were a sheer waste of time. But it did not matter. As men we held the view that in any case all studies done on girls were a sheer waste. However, when we attended the periods taught by lady professor in Microwaves, we kept that view outside the class room. But in the case of Mrs. A, we had mixed feelings. The gang of ten military men who wanted to understand the science and art of radar technology was subjected to the teaching of Buddha, these were quite understandable. But the class room was kept alive more due to the requirements of weather and needs of the blackboard. As the temperature increased, the writing on the wall dictated

?I Slogged for You: You said one minor, three tutorials a week, I worked my backseat off for you. It's not easy sitting through seven hours a day in your main building, doing almost absolutely nothing. Except when you looked me in the eye, and I'd answer just to make you feel good that I may have been listening.

?I lost Sleep for You: Come minors or practical's, there was scarcely a week when I had not put in at last on overnight shop teas, followed be frantic appreciation of what you thought I'd listened to in your lectures (I never did). You asked me to, and I did it. I was smitten by you. I never reasoned why.

?I Cogged for You: I knew you'd feel terrible if you found out that I never paid attention to what you taught. So I let you believe that you were doing a good job. I cogged your practicals. I often cogged in your minors. You felt you were heard me say "I am nor really interested, it doesn't relate to my experiences." But I build my value systems around what thought would please you.

?I Neglecting Family and School Friends: I used to wait eagerly for letters at lunch time. I knew there'd be at least something from back home. Love and concern poured by parents or eager tell me it's really that great note from school friends. Seldom did I reply. I was so taken up by your magic that time ceased to exist for any thought beyond you.

?I cut off all interaction with a world beyond your boundary Walls: The rest of the worlds become a Sector III bus stop. All that it offered was some late night movies and maybe a dinner out for a change. Newspaper headlines seemed uninteresting-they were no competition to the attention you consumed from me.

?You blow Hot and Cold: You never saw me as a person. All your love for me was quantified neatly in A, B, C, D, U,….If ever I slackened off, you rebuked me sharply, and almost immediately. You had my life in your hands, and you drilled it in equations, academic banter, and facts. Don't you think you could have made me feel more welcome. You never really wanted me to relate to anything in the reality beyond your walls. Yet I trusted you, and said, "You know best."

?You Love Others: It's obvious. You reward the A's as your real children. You pat them and stroke them, and you tell me every day that I am not as good enough. All you reward is academics.

?You matter so much to me I let it affect myself worth "I am not as good enough". The thing is I need to hear it. Not all the time, but once in a while at least tell me you love me - me as an individual. Don't you remember, I have left my friends and family for you. And I am not alone, my whole wing of first time away from home

shawl to taken off. The gang smoking the cigarettes thought of cabaret performance in the background of radar technology equations on the blackboard.

She. She wore Punjabi Kurta and Salwar and was quick footed and had to answer the greetings of the complete gang. Because one of us was her friend and we all know that and the gang must respect it fully the sake of Him.

He. He was the quietest of us all. He was always hiding somewhere just at the time of the class, he would suddenly emerge from nowhere. His method was so subtle that there was no suspicion on his where about. Where this nowhere was we did not know till S found it out. It was a sunny spot and from that spot he could gaze at the sun and alternately at She sitting at the same spot sitting in the class. So S came to know that She knew he and vice versa. And then the gang came to know of He and She.

In the net party we cornered him and demanded details he feigned ignorance. The gang knew how to get thing out. A number of large ones were sent down the throat of Him. He stated talking of the sun, of the spot of the sunset and of the sonnet. But the gang would not give up. Liquor preserves everything except secrets. The intellectual in the wearer of Salwar Kameez and appears to hail from the land of two and half rivers. The Bangali in the gang said He is the Southy and She is the wearer of Salwar Kameez and appears to hail from the land of two and half rivers. The Bangali in the gang said he had better experience and found that this land of two and half rivers has nothing to do with a Salwar Kameez. It was the product of high class tailoring and wearing. The Kayasth of the gang thought that. Wearing of clothes had nothing to do with regional discrimination these days and last at the IIT. The Madrasi of the gang hardly understood the problem as he was busy partly with the drinks and partly with the talk. He forces another couple of large one down the throat of him. He sang some songs of his local village but kept the secret awry.

The Sardarji of the gang was busy telling how He and She ran the same computer programs for different problems and got dissimilar result on large print outs which they carried to look as computer users. In fact the Sardarji had written a few of these programmes for Him. He could write these for anybody if one needed computer papers for other uses. But with all this computer talk, the spot or anything else was not clear and He was still silent as Budhha about God.

But soon we reached the threshold. But now the youngest of the gang poured rwo Patiala types for everybody and these has to be finised soon as the ladies were waiting for the food to be served. He gave up and told the truth, and the whole truth. Sirji, he said to the gang leader. She is my P D K, I mean P D K and everybody was blank. S clarified that PDK stood for Pind Di Kuri. There was a loud laughter of the whole gang including that of Sardarji. Hardly had it died

down that the Bangali Babu sai "Howrach" and there was a bigger laughter including that the ladies and it lasted as long as the train lasts on the Howrah Bridge.

Hail the Gang, Hail PD K.

Must it be Breed apart?“BELIEVE IT OR NOT”by Sandeep Kohli, Kumaon Hostel.?A girl, comes to meet her classmate in a boys hostel.

Whilst they are both engaged in working, the door is bolted from outside, and not opened despite a lot of protests from within. Next, crackers are burst outside the door, and a lot of 'merry making' occurs. Finally, when the door is opened and the girl emerges from within, she meets a group of, suddenly turned docile boys. But that, is not all. Upon emerging from the hostel the girl finds that her bike is temporarily missing. Latter an apology team lands at Kailash, and begs them not to report the matter and jeopardise worthy careers. The boisterous 'manliness' pleads in tears. Do you believe all this happened at IIT Delhi? Does anyone have an answer?

Postscript

?The Institute says, "Don't treat me like a dharmasala. By all means sit for the Civil Services exam, but do it after you do justice to the M.Tech. Programmes."

?The faculty says, "If you are not serious, give someone else a chance. Someone who may not be as brilliant as you, but is far more committees".

?The student says, "What if I don't get in. Service conditions for engineers are poor in India. I have to get out. You lay the rules; I will work around the system and beat it. After all. You owe it to me. Don't you know I am brilliant".

This same brilliance will find a way out of every system for personal gain. Notice these excerpts from his famous interview.

FIRST DAY IN IITD by Anup Gulati ̀ 71

?No doubt about it - IT is value for money. You can roll along fairly comfortably at around Rs. 1,500per year. Tuition is 200pa, the hostel is 100 pa and the food (including occasional "doubling") is Rs. 750 pa (Veg., and Non-Veg. or Both!). And this expense is for duds like me. And once more brain, and you get thrust on you a merit or a merit-cum-means scholarship (25% of the guy get this) - that Rs. 75/- per month and free tuition. Anyway it is easy to indulge in one's simple pleasures.A coke is 25p (and you can always- like Tojo- bum one if you hang around long enough at Panditji's), wills filter (pack of 10) is 60p cp is 30p away (route no 45

that you knew a Jai Gupta in the past, but this couldn't possible be the Jai Gupta you remember.

Your possible confusion, brings to mind a story I have heard about a distinguished American educator and philosopher at Columbia University during the early 1930's.

It seems he retired in a suburb outside of New York and began selling eggs and vegetables as a hobby. Well, one day a wealthy neighbour called to order eggs. None of the children who, usually delivered the groceries were available. So he went to house of affluent neighbour to deliver the groceries himself. Out of habit he went to the front entrance but was promptly ushered to the ear entrance where all deliveries were to be made.

A few days later, he was the guest speaker at a local affair where his wealthy neighbour was in the audience. As he speaks, his neighbour learned over to a friend and said "that man looks just like my egg man".

So if you think I look just like egg man or Jai Gupta you knew long time ago, you may be right!

?I think you for inviting me here for the Convocation. It will solve a little domestic problem also for me. God bless my wife Shahsi. She has refused to believe for the last 18 years we have been arried that I was a IIT Delhi graduate. Often she thought it was ITI (Industrial Training Institute). Perhaps she relates to what I do. She knows for sure that IIT products only great engineers and great scientists like Professor Kaw.

from RKP sec-III) and a movie at freshly renovated Odeon Rs. 2.80/-.

Girls - or , their complete absence is our major problem. The sex life is several strained. Kailashites are all the M.Sc. types- formidable, cold and aloof. Besides, they are all older then us. B.Tech has nothing going for it. And the days of meaningful relationships with the LSRites are still years away.

Brain Drain:

?It is well -known fact that a number of highly trained engineers and scientists from the five IITs migrate regularly from India to USA, Australia, Europe and other countries. Traditionally, periodic debates are held on the issue and often on wonders if but-for this brain-drain India would have been much better-off than it is. One also wonders if this migration can justifiably be classified as unpatriotic. The question being discussed here is whether this migration is really a brain-drain or brain-bank, a term used in the article 'Brain Drain: an IIT Experience' in Science Today, March 1991.

experiments. In the first, the student has to log in and book a time-slot. The control of the equipment will be given to the student, who can perform the experiment sitting in a college hundreds of kilometres away. This doesn't require a physical instructor thanks to an instructional video and a step-by-step manual. For simulated experiments, many students can simultaneously log in and conduct the experiments.
