With another successful sport season now behind us, in which Laurier reached our 60th OUA Championship and 12th National Championship, and summer plan-ning for the upcoming season concluding, it seems timely to reflect on the past year at Laurier Athletics and Recreation, our context, and our plans and prospects for the future.

another Year of Excellence

Wilfrid Laurier University contin-ues to be one of Canada’s finest Athletic and Recreation institutions - a fact con-firmed by the Canadian Intramural and Recreation Association, who awarded Laurier their Banner of Excellence for the third consecutive year. In addition, Laurier team’s won three provincial OUA titles in Women’s Soccer, Lacrosse and Curling, won a CIS silver medal in Women’s Soccer and a National Championship in Women’s Curling. Swimmer Whitney Rich also earned OUA Gold in the 100m breast-stroke. Internationally, Andrea Ironside, Liz Knox, Candice Styles, Alicia Martin and Jean-Michel Rizk all played hockey for Canada at the World University Winter Game in Ezrum, Turkey, with Ironside, Knox, Styles and Martin winning a gold medal. Soccer player Alyssa Lagonia joined Team Canada this fall in preparation for the Women’s World Cup in Germany and Brittany Shaw competed for Canada at the World Lifesaving Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Our own staff served as mission staff also, as Patricia Kitchen, Laurier Associate Director Recreation and Facilities, was the Team Leader for Lifesaving Canada in Egypt and Ari Grossman, Laurier Associate Director of Business Operations, served as Director of Sport Information in Turkey. Laurier’s standing in sport and rec-reation has been strikingly consistent across all of our teams and programming. Ours is one of a handful of universities in Canada that measures up well across the spectrum of activities, sports, and leader-ship opportunities. This breadth and depth of excellence speaks volumes about our world-class coaches, gifted students, and dedicated staff. Our coaches and staff are a remarkably varied and energetic group,

and we owe them all a huge debt of grati-tude. That is perhaps a useful segue to consider the variety of awards, prizes and distinctions earned by our Laurier Athletics and Recreation community - a great many of them by students which are highlighted in the contents of this newsletter. One of the accomplishments to be most proud of is that 45 student-athletes achieved OUA and CIS Academic All-Canadian status. Laurier student-athletes collectively have a higher graduation rate than the regular Laurier student population. Match this with the 42 OUA All-Star selections and nine CIS All-Canadian honoured athletes and we truly do have exceptional people who “Inspire Lives Of Leadership and Purpose!”

The Landscape of University Sport in 2010-2011

The accomplishments of members of Laurier Athletics and Recreation over the past year are all the more remark-able when one considers the landscape of University Sport in 2010-11. The economic recession has forced deep cuts to athletic and recreation programs across Canada and Laurier was not immune to this real-ity. Compounding the problem, Laurier’s student population has grown to 15,000 students and the demand by all fee-paying students for programs, services and facili-ties are at an all time high. The global econ-omy is still unsettled and as a result, there are rapid changes afoot in university sport. On a more sober note, this past fall Laurier introduced major reforms to its athletics structure by introducing a new sport model to address operational and program finances, and student recreational demand on facilities and services. Hardest hit in these unfortunate but necessary changes was the decision to discontinue of both our men’s and women’s volleyball teams. To bring volleyball to the level of provincial and national competiveness unfortunately would have required us to more than double our resources annually to meet the level of support of our top OUA competitors. The status quo, or not taking action, would have also drained resources to other stronger interuniversity programs within the Laurier family. We had to make this difficult decision. The re-allocation of resources, financial and human, will strengthen our program in the long-term. The new sport model will pro-

vide more club and recreational opportuni-ties for a wider cross-section of fee-paying students in emerging sports as well as recreational pursuits where students have interest and the desire to wear the purple and gold.

Investing in the Future

Laurier playing fields, gymnasium, fitness facilities, dance studios and stadium are privileged to host a large number of our young people, for a brief period of their leadership development, who will go on to represent Laurier and Canada in a world of uncertainty, challenge, and oppor-tunity. From my perspective, our ongoing success depends on sustaining time-honoured links to our alumni, sponsors, and friends. Last year, our Laurier students supported a referendum to fund the $5 million dollar expansion of our Fitness Centre. Student body investment, vol-unteerism, philanthropy and corporate sponsorship have been cornerstones of the Golden Hawk tradition of excellence. Through their generosity - whether they have shared their time, their expertise, or their financial resources in whatever measure - individual students, alumni and friends, along with a range of local and national companies have helped enrich the student experience. They have built community by helping to build our build-ings and mentor our students. We are truly grateful for all this support. I very much hope we can count on your continu-ing involvement and support in the years ahead. Last, on a personal note, it was a great pleasure and privilege, once again to serve our student-athletes along the Laurier Athletics and Recreation staff in this, our university’s 100th year. I am looking for-ward to celebrating our rich tradition of excellence and share in the history making which no doubt our student-athletes and leaders will accomplish this coming sea-son. I invite you to share that vantage point with me during the 2011-12 season.Go Hawks! Sincerely,

Peter Baxter M.A. Director Athletics and Recreation

2011 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees

This fall, the Wilfrid Laurier Uni-versity Department of Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame will see six new members inducted into the hall as the 2011 induction class.

The induction ceremony is sched-uled to take place on Friday, September 30th in the Senate and Board Chamber.

During Homecoming weekend, four athletes, one builder and one team will have their names etched into Golden Hawk’s history. This year’s athlete inductees are Meaghan McGrath from women’s basketball, Yannick Carter and Jesse Alexander from football and Ash-ley Stephenson from women’s hockey. Inducted into the builders category will be alumnus Arthur Stephen, former Vice-President: University Advance-ment, and into the teams category, the 1961 football team.

McGrath enjoyed an outstanding four year career as a guard with the women’s basketball team from 2002-03 to 2005-06. In her rookie season with the Hawks, McGrath led the team in scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game, earning her OUA West Rookie of the Year honours and a spot on the CIS All-Rookie Team. She also led her team to their first-ever appearance at the CIS Championship after helping Laurier to an OUA bronze medal. The three-time OUA First Team All-Star would also guide her team back to the national championships in her second season. However, it was in her third and fourth seasons with the team where she established herself as one of the top players in the country. McGrath averaged 16.6 and 19.3 points per game respectively in her last two seasons, and in 2005-06, she was named the OUA West Player of the Year, a CIS Second Team All-Canadian and the winner of the President’s Trophy. She currently ranks sixth all-time in the OUA in scor-ing with 1,369 career points.

Carter, one of two football players in this year’s class, was an integral member of the Golden Hawks championship teams in 2004 and 2005. In his second season with the team, Carter recorded

24.5 total tackles, three forced fumbles, one sack and one interception as Laurier posted their first 8-0 season in team history and captured their first Yates Cup in 13 years. In 2005, the linebacker was named an OUA Second Team All-Star as the Golden Hawks captured both the Yates Cup and the Vanier Cup, only the second the school history. Carter would finish his career by posting career-highs in total tackles, solo tackles and assisted tackles while leading the nation in sacks, earning OUA First Team All-Star and CIS First Team All-Canadi-an honours in 2006.

Alexander joins Cart-er, his former teammate, as the third member of the 2011 class. An excellent linebacker during his five year career (2002 to 2006) with the Golden Hawks, Alexander made a name for himself in 2004 when he set then-career highs in total tackles, solo tackles, assisted tackled, sacks and intercep-tions en route to helping Laurier win the Yates Cup. His play earned him both OUA First Team All-Star and CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours. In 2005, Alexander was once again a key mem-ber of the Golden Hawks defence that shutdown opponents week in and week out as Laurier won their first Vanier Cup since 1991. Returning for his fifth and final season, Alexander finished fourth in the nation in tackles, earning OUA First Team All-Star and CIS First Team All-Canadian honours. As an added bo-nus, Alexander was named the recipient of the President’s Trophy as the top male athlete at Laurier following the season.

Stephenson, the fourth and final athlete to enter the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame this year, played defence for the women’s hockey team between 2001-02 and 2005-06. During her five year career at Laurier, Stephen-son was a four-time OUA All-Star who guided the Golden Hawks to four OUA Champion-ships, including two as team captain in her final two seasons. She burst onto the stage in 2002-03 when she led all Golden Hawks defencemen in scoring with 21 points, earning her first OUA All-Star nod. During the 2004-05 season, her most impressive at Laurier, Stephenson captained the Golden Hawks to the team’s first CIS women’s hockey cham-pionship where she was not only named

a tournament all-star but the tourna-ment MVP as well. In her final year with Laurier, her strong play on the blue line earned her OUA First Team All-Star, CIS First Team All-Canadian and CIS tourna-ment all-star honours.

Stephen, entering the Golden Hawks Hall of Fame as a builder, retired from his position of Vice-President: University Advancement in 2008. Stephen originally joined the university as an em-ployee in 1974, one year after graduating from the school. He would go on to serve in numerous senior administrative positions but it was his time as Vice-President: Univer-sity Advancement for which he will be best remembered. Stephen is widely credited for developing one of the most accomplished university advancement programs in Canada, recognized for its innovation and leadership in institu-tional identity, fundraising and student recruitment. In 2008-09, he was first honoured by the Department of Athlet-ics and Recreation as the recipient of the Tuffy Knight Award for his work in making athletics a key part of the Lauri-er experience. Through his tenure he has been a key contributor to Golden Hawk athletic facilities and teams. He sup-ported the development of Alumni Field and the University Stadium renewal and through the 1980’s, was a volunteer head coach for the squash team. Stephen can still often be seen at many Golden Hawk events with a camera capturing the purple and gold highlights.

The 1961 football team enters the hall of fame with the distinction of producing the first pro-vincial cham-pionship in school history. Coached by Bob Celeri, the team competed in the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic As-sociation against Ryerson Institute of Technology (RIT), Royal Military Col-lege (RMC) and Hamilton Institute of Technology (HIT). From their opening contest, the team showed themselves to be the class of the conference, winning their first five contests by a combined score of 199-25. In their final game of the season, the team tied RIT 14-14 but their previous success was more than enough to help them earn the title of champions.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner on September 30 can be purchased by contacting Heather Ferris at [email protected].

during the regular season. The Golden Hawks would post an 11-1 record head-ing into the OUA Championship, thanks to the play of OUA Most Outstanding Player and Outstanding Women of Laurier finalist Hanna Burnett. At the championship, the purple and gold would sneak past Toronto 12-11 in the semifinals. In the championship match, the Golden Hawks exacted a measure of revenge as they defeated Western, in a rematch of last year’s final, 7-5 to claim their eighth provincial championship in 11 years. Cheerleading continued to demon-strate why they are one of the top pro-grams in the country as they captured their fourth consecutive national title in the All-Girl Division. The team of 30 talented athletes, featuring five fourth year veterans, had a very strong open-

ing performance, scoring 389 points to give them a comfortable advantage head-ing into the second routine. With the national championship still up for grabs, the Hawks upped their performance in the second run and earned 400 points to finish with a combined total of 789. That total was more than enough, placing them in first place by 57 points over their nearest competitor, to once again claim the national championship title. It was a season to remember for the 2010-11 women’s basketball team. Led by OUA First Team All-Star Renata Adamczyk and OUA Rookie of the Year Felicia Mazerolle, Laurier finished third in the OUA West with a 15-7 record and qualified for their first CIS Championship since 2003-04 after winning the CIS West Regional tournament. Despite drop-ping their opening contest, the Golden Hawks refused to end their season on a losing note, winning their final two games against Carleton and Toronto to finish fifth, their best showing ever at the national championship.

Men’s curling also found themselves at the CIS Championship in 2010-11 thanks to a strong showing at the OUA Championship. The Golden Hawks, pow-ered by three OUA First Team All-Stars in Shane Konings, Matthew Mapletoft and Scott McGregor, breezed through round-robin play and defeated Laurentian to punch their ticket to the national champi-onship. At the CIS/CCA championships in St. John’s, Nfld., Laurier dropped four one-point decisions en route to post-ing a 3-5 record, missing out on playoff action. Mapletoft continued his fine play, earning CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours. In 2010-11, Laurier and the women’s hockey team welcomed the best teams from across the country to Waterloo for the CIS Championship. The Golden Hawks entered the championship as the fifth seed after seeing their OUA Championship winning streak snapped at seven as they were knocked out in the semifinals by Queen’s. The team was led by fifth year goaltender Liz Knox and a class of young talent, highlighted by CIS All-Rookie team members Laura Brooker and Alannah Wakefield. After a win and a loss in the round robin, Laurier once again faced-off against Queen’s for the CIS Bronze medal but could not knock off their rivals from Kingston, settling for a fourth place finish. On the gridiron, men’s football had a rollercoaster season that saw the team drop their opening three contests before winning four of their last five to clinch a home playoff game. Led by CIS All-Canadian Giancarlo Rapanaro, the Hawks won their OUA quarter-final matchup against Guelph 42-10 as Rapanaro connected on all three field goal attempts while recording five tack-les. In their semifinal matchup against Ottawa, Laurier jumped out to an early lead at the half only to see the Gee-Gee’s come back and win the game 32-31 thanks to a late field goal. The story of the men’s basketball season was the play of fourth year for-ward Kale Harrison. In 2010-11, Harrison established new Golden Hawk records for most points in a season (466) and most points in a career (1,517) in leading Laurier to a 13-9 record in the OUA West. The Golden Hawks would continue their strong play into the playoffs, knocking off both Guelph and Windsor to advance to the OUA Final Four. In the semifinals against Carleton, the purple and gold nearly pulled off a major upset of the top-ranked team in the nation but fell

short, 83-76. Under first year head coach Greg Puhalski, the men’s hockey team battled through a tough schedule to finish sec-ond in the OUA West. Ryan Daniels was the story between the pipes for the Golden Hawks as the second year net-minder started all 28 games and earned OUA West MVP honours. After dispos-ing of the UOIT Ridgebacks in the first round of the playoffs, Laurier clashed with Guelph in the West Quarter-finals. Despite a game two shutout victory from Daniels, the Golden Hawks could not knock off the rival Gryphons, dropping game three 2-1 to end their season. On the field, men’s soccer enjoyed a solid year, finishing with a 7-3-6 record, good enough for third in the OUA West. After advancing past Guelph in the first round of the OUA playoffs, the Golden Hawks ran into the York Lions, the even-tual CIS Champions, losing 2-0 on the road. Following the season, three Hawks earned OUA Second Team All-Star hon-ours including Chris Walker, Eamonn Hardy and Donald Chmura. In the pool, Whitney Rich continued her dominance in the 100m Breaststroke at the OUA Championships, winning the event for the fourth time in her career and earning the OUA Award of

Distinction. The women would end up seventh overall while the men finished tenth. Three swimmers would qualify from the meet for the CIS Championship, including Rich, Brittany Shaw and Renee Dijk. Men’s volleyball had an up and down 2010-11 season. The team started off strong, winning four of their first eight games. However, after Christmas, the team struggled, losing six consecu-tive games at one point before win-ning their final regular season match to snag the final playoff spot. Taking on nationally-ranked McMaster in the OUA Quarter-finals, the Hawks could not pull

off an upset as the team lost in straight sets. As for the women’s team, their sea-son script played out in a similar fashion. The purple and gold started off slow, posting just one win before the holiday break. In the new year, the team would win seven games, including their final three of the regular season but it wasn’t enough to qualify them for post-season action. Following the season, team cap-tain Tesca Andrew-Wasylik was named the recipient of the OUA West Award of Merit. The men’s golf team participated in the OUA Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club in October, finishing in fifth place. The team was led by OUA First Team All-Star Brett Murray, who shot a two-day total of 147. At the Canadian University/College Championship in June, the Golden Hawks took on the best teams in the country, winding up in 13th place after failing to make the cut after the third day of competition. On the diamond, men’s baseball came up short in their bid to qualify for the post-season, finishing with a 6-8 record and missing out on the play-offs by one game. First year outfielder Nathan Loehle earned the OUA Rookie of the Year award after hitting .350 and driving in a team-high 13 runs. The highlight of the 2010-11 season for the cross country team was their

placing at the Waterloo Open. Led by Shoaib Ikram and Jennifer Laughton, the men and women earned second and third place finishes overall, with Ikram earning a Top 5 finish. At the OUA Championships, the men repeated their ninth place finish from a year earlier while the women improved from 13th to 11th. In the winter, indoor middle dis-tance, in their second season as a varsity team, had some strong individual show-ings during the course of their competi-tive season. At the Fred Foot Memorial, Ikram won gold in the men’s 1500m while Kyle Dekker also captured gold in the 3000m at the York Open. At the Hal Brown Last Chance meet, the women’s 4x800m relay team earned the women’s top result of the year, a silver medal fin-ish.Men’s and women’s rugby both struggled

during the fall of 2010. The men’s team finished the season 0-8 while the women also failed to record a victory, finishing 0-5. Alex St. John and Jeff Pickel earned OUA All-Star status for the men while Kaley Powers was the lone member of the women’s team to earn the honour. At the conclusion of the season, Laurier held its annual athletic ban-quet to recognize the achievements of its coaches, players and staff. Women’s soccer player Tania Pedron and men’s basketball player Kale Harrison took home the President’s Award for the most outstanding athletic performances of the past year. Rookie of the Year honours (Rich Newbrough Award) went out to women’s soccer player Kelsey Tikka and men’s basketball player Patrick Donnelly. Dillon Heap from football and Brittany Shaw from swimming were the recipients of the Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award while Marco Bertagnolio from men’s rugby and Megan Gilmore from women’s volleyball took home the Fred Nichols Community Service Leadership Award. Finally, team of the year honours (Glenn Carroll Award) went to women’s curl-ing.

Outstanding Women of Laurier awardWith 13 women competing for the title

of Outstanding Woman of Laurier this past year, it was ultimately swimmer Brittany Shaw who took home the honour after her performance in the pool, in the classroom and in the community.

Shaw is a fourth-year biochemistry and biotechnology student from Kitch-ener, Ontario. She has been a member of the women’s swim team since her first year at Laurier and became captain in her third year.

Her greatest achievement on the swim team came in her third year, when she made four individual Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national time standards. In 2010, she travelled to Egypt representing the World Lifesaving Championships and was selected for the national team.

In Shaw’s spare time, she is a coach with the Region of Waterloo (ROW) swim club and volunteers for the Special Olympics as a coach for their swimming program. She also volunteers for the Students Offering Sup-

port (SOS) organization, and recently trav-elled to Nicaragua with SOS to help build a school for an underprivileged community.

Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award in 2006 to recog-nize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to the community through vol-unteerism. Shaw received $1,000 as part of her athletic scholarship and a gold pendant for her accomplishments in front of a crowd of more than 300 people who attended the

luncheon ceremony. The two other finalists included Hanna Burnett from lacrosse and Samantha Schmalz from rugby. Each of the finalists also received a gold pendant and a $500 scholarship.

“I’m proud to be here representing Laurier women, not only as successful stu-dents, but also as successful athletes who somehow find time to volunteer in our community,” said Shaw. “I’d like to thank my classmates and teammates. Together we represent a community at Laurier that strives for excellence.”

This year’s event included a keynote address from Canadian figure skater and Olympic bronze medalists Joannie Rochette and was hosted by Laurier alumna Diaene Vernile, anchor and producer for CTV Southwestern Ontario’s Provincewide.

In total, the event raised $20,000 to help support women’s athletic initiatives, schol-arships and the mentoring program at Lau-rier.

Golden Hawks Football announces 2011 Ticket PricesWith just under two months until the

beginning of the 2011 football season, the Wilfrid Laurier University Department of Athletics and Recreation has announced a new ticket pricing structure for the upcoming season.

New this year for the Golden Hawk football season ticket package is the addition of an extra game in the pricing. Fans will now receive tickets for all four home games, plus Laurier’s first home playoff game for $54.95. The same package can be purchased by Laurier students for just $25.95.

Along with additional game, fans will also avoid paying Homecoming prices, which will be in effect for the 2011 season.

Overall, the season ticket package comes at a cost savings of 25% for fans and averages out $9.99 per game for

adults and $4.49 per game for Laurier students.

If the Golden Hawks do not host a home playoff game in 2011, the ticket may be returned for a refund, exchanged for another Golden Hawk game ticket in 2012 or used as a deposit for the 2012 football season.

Homecoming and single game tickets are also now available for purchase by the general public. This season, Golden Hawk football fans can save $2.00 off the walk up price if they purchase tickets in advance of game day. Walk up prices start at $15.95 for adults and $7.95 for Laurier students while Homecoming prices start at $17.95 for adults and $9.95 for Laurier students.

Tickets can be purchased on-line by visiting www.tickets.laurierathletics.com or in person at the Athletics Complex on

the corner of King St. and University Ave. On game day, tickets are available at the University Stadium box office two hours prior to kick-off.

Current and former Golden Hawks will be suiting up for Canada later this month for the FISU World University Games in Shenzhen, China. Current athletes Alyssa Lagonia (Soccer) and Kale Harrison (Basketball) along with former Volleyball player Cameron Wheelan (Beach Volleyball) will don the red and white in hopes of bringing home a medal from the bi-annual event. They will be joined at the event by Cord News Director Justin Fauteux, who was one of two North American participants selected to cover the event as a part of FISU’s young sports jounalist program. Two members of the athletic department, Mike Whitehouse and Peter Baxter, will also travel with the team. Mike will be serving as one of Canada’s Communications Officers while Peter is Canada’s Chef de Mission.

Lagonia and the women’s soccer team will be in action from August 11-21 while Harrison and the men’s basketball team will be on the court from August 13-22. Wheelan and the men’s beach volleyball team will be in action from August 13-18.
