27 7/22/77 County shuts down refuge collection site. County no longer responsible for areas garbage. Several private collection companies are looking at the feasibility of collecting the garbage in the area. Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Co now a reality! County Board agreed to the $10,000 to train 10 volunteer firemen. Construction of the new addition to the Concow School Music room has been slow. Waiting on shipment of bricks to match those on the library.

33 9/2/77 Programs available thru Paradise Recreation and Park District:  Concow After‐School Playground  and  Self‐Defense Skills thru Judo. Opening day enrollment at Golden Feather was 178.  Due to lack of water for the Concow Pool  there will be no lessons this year. The Butte County Board of Supervisors approved the Use Permit for the Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Company (GFVFC).

34 9/9/77 Fire broke out on Jordan Hill Road on the Gene Scott property.  Property damage was fairly minimal, investigation pending.  Concow Lake has been closed for the season  to all boat fishing.  CPR classes set to begin on September 26th at the Concow Grange Hall. The Parents Club is seeking volunteers‐‐‐the Spring Carnival was cancelled due to lack of support.

35 9/16/77 Total monies raised by donations and fundraising activities on behalf of GFVFC  amounted to $3,905.00.  The Oroville National Guard Unit has volunteered men and equipment to improve playground facilities at Concow; the Ecology Core will do a series of plantings around the school. Department of Fish and Game to poison fish in Feather River.

36 9/23/77 Trash dumped at old (closed) Transfer Station Site.  Signs are clearly posted that site is closed. The Golden Feather Recreation Advisory Committee agreed to start the the Master Plan for Concow School Recreation Program. The radioactive cloud from the China explosion passed over Northern California.  Per EPA, no harmful rise in radiation  levels in California.

37 9/30/77 "Ranger", the dog who adopted the crew at Jarbo Fire Station, will have a new home at the end of the season.  One crew member has decided to adopt Ranger.  Beginning October 2nd, the Little Church on the Mountain will be meeting at Concow School. Teen Recreation Night will be held on the third Friday of the month at Concow School.

38 10/7/77 The GFVFC has sent the Articles of Incorporation, duly signed and notarized, on to Sacramento this week.The GFE is attempting to put together a community telephone service directory for the area.  Logging operations have resumed above Concow Valley‐‐‐Siller Bros., are the logging contractors.

39 10/14/77 Oregon City Schoolhouse returns to school status! In the early 1900's, the school lapsed and became part of the Cherokee School District‐‐‐ which, in 1962, became part of the Golden Feather Union School District.  A plan for the development of the GFVFC site was studied, and a plot plan and  topographic projection of the site is under review.

41 10/28/77 Logging operations in Big Bend this summer created a potentially dangerous situation.  An old septic tank was caved in by the logging operations, leaving an exposed  opening.  Northwest Pacific Resources purchased  the property for logging purposes, but apparently has not made any visible effort to correct the problem.

42 11/4/77 Mr. Robert Winston, Supervisor for our District, sent a note to the Health Department insisting upon their immediate action regarding the open septic  tank in Big Bend.   News & notes from all over:  The minimum wage is now $2.65 per hour and will increase to $3.35 per hour by 1981.  The toll for the Golden Gate Bridge now stands at $1.00.

43 11/7/77 The regular meeting of the Governing Board of Trustees of the Golden Feather Union School District was held on Saturday, November 5th.  Issues discussed‐‐‐ An inter‐district attendance agreement was approved for Monique Patton to attend Thermalito;  November 25th was designated a classified holiday for school employees; Special meeting to be held November 15th.

44 11/18/77 Community Meeting.  Due to the holiday and, the extremely poor turnouts for the last several meetings, Mr. Gene Miller, Community Chairman, has decided to postpone the meeting for November.  Paradise Recreation District.  A special "Holiday Hat Dance" has been scheduled for Thursday, December 1st, at Paradise Memorial Hall in Paradise.

45 12/2/77 Around the 15th of December, Lake Concow will be drained. T.I.D. Personnel estimate that it will take approximately 1 week to completely drain the lake.  Workers will then repair damaged drain valves and check the cone.  After much determination and heavy insistence by Mr. Robert Winston, the logging company finally filled in the old caved in septic tank.

47 12/16/77 Sheriff Larry Gillick reports that this years Toy Drive has been very successful.  Most of the toys have been coming in from the Chico area.  News & notes from all over.  Approval is expected from both the House and  the  Senate on a bill raising taxes for employees and employers to insure financing  the Social Security program into the next century.

48 12/23/77 The "Christmas Tree" on Highway 70 was a drought statistic , so a new one was selected. The tree is decorated each year by Helen Moural of Pinkston Canyon Road and her niece, Jo Ann Sisson of Oroville.  Editorial: Thanks to all of our readers and subscribers for their support and loyalty during 1977. This endeavor (Golden Feather Echoes), began on January 24, 1977!

49 1/13/78 Lime Saddle Community Service District news:  A well delivering some 100 gallons per minute was sunk and a second test hole is probable.  There are approximately 350 homes in the possible service area. Distribution is pending.  A bid of $12,000 of the County Sharing Funds has been submitted  for  the purchase of a fire engine for GFVFC.  The telephone service in the Golden Feather area continues to be problematic.

50 1/20/78 The Golden Feather Union School District recently hired Mrs. Izella McGee to teach the first grade at Concow School.  Mrs. McGee taught at Concow in the past.  News from out of the area!  Actor and Singer, Roy Rogers, is doing fine after having open heart surgery.

52 2/3/78 The Butte County Sheriff's Department  has assigned  Deputy Sheriff, William Anderson, to the Golden Feather area.  According to Sheriff Larry Gillick, this is a permanent assignment. Golden Feather Area History: Concow once supported 25 sawmills.  There were also several quartz mills in the area.

53 2/10/78 Michael H. Pinkston Obituary. Passed away on Thursday in a Chico Hospital. He was born on April 9, 1904 in Yankee Hill on the "Old Pinkston Place" where he lived for 64 years.   Butte Record:  July, 1856 ‐‐‐ Table Mountain: Some miners in probing about Table Mt., punched a hole through the upper crust and discovered a cavern or "bottomless pit", which they immediately claimed and staked.

54 2/17/78 Butte Record:   January, 1856 ‐‐‐ History of how some of the streets were name in Oroville.  Bird Street ‐ after Capain Bird, Oroville hotel keeper; Robinson Street ‐ after a well known miner in the area; Lincoln Street ‐ after C.G. Lincoln, owner of the first daily newspaper.    News from out of the area!  Muhammad Ali lost his heavyweight title in a 15 round decision going to young Leon Spinks in Las Vegas on Wednesday evening.

55 2/24/78 From Butte and Daily Record Newspapers:  1854 ‐ a successful hunting trip was reported by Sheriff Bob Anderson and others.  They killed six grizzly bears on Kimshew Creek;  1876 ‐  In Flea Valley (above Concow), there was a large sawmill and a flume ditch, which in turn created the village of Dumpville‐‐‐ today known as Pentz.

56 3/3/78 Former School Teacher, Marie Hopkings, taught all three Grieco boys at Concow School  begining in 1950. Mrs. Hopkins and her husband, George, also a teacher, taught eight grades in a one room school house! Butte Record:  1856‐‐‐The Butte County Jail, measuring  16' x 12'  with two cells, had 16 prisoners last week.

57 3/10/78 Recently, Wayne Drilling, Inc., drilled a well for the GFVFC, No. 22.  Drilling was stopped at the 125 foot level, yielding approximately 15 gallons per minute.  The Division of Forestry has purchased a   fire engine‐‐‐a 1959 International with a Class A engine and a 350 gallon tank.

58 3/17/78 Two burials at Yankee Hill Cemetery this past week. Questions are again being asked as to the status of the cemetery which cannot be closed and past attempts to organize a cemetery district were blocked.

59 3/24/78 Regulations regarding the recreational use of Lake Concow will be the same as last year‐‐‐refer to a newly erected sign by the lake for information. The lake patrolman will again be Henry Schultz. Glimpse into the past!  A survey of the population in 1890 showed that Concow had 459 residents and Bidwell (included Oroville) had 650.

61 4/7/78 Harvesting of bug‐kill trees around Lake Concow has been approved; Oliver Elam Logging has contracted to do the work.  Glimpse into the past!  Veazie City (in 1853), Fredonia, Yatestown and Troy were some of the towns that virtually sprang up overnight near the southern boundary line of the Feather River and became ghost towns almost as  fast.  In 1858,  the Oregon City and Concow School Districts were formed.

62 4/14/78 Oregon City School Park Site  is owned by the Golden Feather School District. It is a historical site and has been used as a community center as well as a schoolhouse. Due to age and deterioration, the building needs immediate and extensive remodeling if the building is to be saved.  Budget requested ‐  $3,500.00; Site development ‐ an additional $500.00.

65 5/5/78 Letters included in this newsletter from Mr. James Moak and Mr. Frank Cuny is a continuance of those who question the residency requirements of local School Board members.  A small spot grass fire occurred on Tuesday near Camelot in Concow.  A CDF unit responded, but no damage was reported and no structures were endangered.

66 5/12/78 News from the GFVFC Board of Directors meeting of May 10th:  The County has still not approved the plans on the geodesic dome structure; the Board is considering forming an auxiliary to help with fund raising activities; there remains an open seat on the Board of Directors; fire fighters are doing fire plan maps of the area and, as of June 1, GFVFC #22 will be GFVFC #37!

68 5/26/78 Voting Precinct 127 (Don Nichols residence, Cresta) has been closed by Butte County.  The County can not afford (nor is it feasible) to keep this precinct open for the small amount of registered voters served. Graduation ceremonies will begin at Concow School on June 1st., at 8:00 in the evening. There will be twenty‐six graduates (thirteen girls and thirteen boys!

71 6/16/78 The enrollment at the end of the 10th month of school was 191.  Estimated enrollment figures for next year are 174. The Board cut the 78‐79 budget by $76.000, more cuts may be necessary.

73 6/30/78 A special meeting of the Governing  Board of Trustees of Golden Feather School District was held on Sunday, June 25th. Approval of the Master Plan was given ‐‐‐this plan was tentative and is subject to state and local changes. Further budget cuts were also made.  Glimpse into the past!  When the white men came, the main complaint of the Indians was the disastrous consequences upon the creeks, and the consequent elimination of the game.

76 7/21/78 Dorothy Baldwin Obituary. Passed away on  July 16th at her home in Concow.  Frank Moore Obituary. Passed away last week at the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital in Southern California after undergoing open heart surgery.                                                              Concow Lake is going to be drained after Labor Day weekend so two drain valves in the dam may be repaired and the face of the dam inspected.  The lake was last drained In the early 50's.  Linda & Tobe Moak were married July 8th at Ramsey Bar.

77 7/28/78 Willard Potter Obituary.  Passed away on July 12th at a hospital in Walnut Creek following an extended illness.                                    Cement foundation was poured at the fire station on Saturday and the erection of concrete block walls is planned for the next workday. The Community Meeting Agenda included discussion on the effects of the pending coal plant.

78 8/4/78 A special School Board  meeting was called on July 29th.  The Board interviewed the six applicants chosen from the 48‐50 applications received for the position of principal‐administrator.  It is expected that the Board will announce their decision at the August meeting.

79 8/11/78 Discussion at the community meeting on August 3rd regarding the proposed Coal Fired Power Plant. The proposed plant has caused a furor. In addition to health reasons, the energy generated by the proposed plant would go south, with the central load point being 145 miles south of Butte County. The plant would employ approximately 250 full time employees, plus some temporary help, and would save money in property taxes.

80 8/18/78 Golden Feather Echoes Editorial regarding the proposed coal plant. Editorial addressed the issue of the vote taken during the August community meeting, which did not reflect the opinion of every person present, as being in opposition to the plant. If the Golden Feather Community Association is to serve as a true voice of our community, it must represent the entire community.

81 8/25/78 Mr. Petersen, the new principal, sent an open letter to parents indicating he will be in favor of strong discipline in the school.  It was encouraging to see Mr. Kenneth Leach, Butte County D.A., speak out in favor of the Land Fraud Unit.  It is unfortunate that the Board of Supervisors wish to "silence" this unit.

86 9/29/78 GFE extends condolences to survivors of the recent PSA tragedy. Lost on Monday's ill‐fated flight was Garry Pommells of Citrus Heights, California.  His survivors include wife Brenda (Giles), daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Giles of Jordan Hill Road, and three daughters.  Also lost on Monday's flight was Richard Hight. Condolences to his daughter Hillery and her family.  Hillery graduated from Concow School last year.  Fire causes heavy smoke damage to Rock House! The fire was apparently started by a cigarette left in an ash tray.

88 10/13/78 The idea by the CDF to pull one fire engine away from Jarbo Gap had been rescinded.  At the recent Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Company Board meeting, it was stressed the need for obtaining a piece of equipment used for forced entry in case of automobile accidents.

89 10/20/78 It was reported at the Golden Feather Board of Trustees regular meeting that the bill for the fall swimming program was $420.00 for 13 days of swimming.  Word comes from the State Grange Convention in Bakersfield, that the Concow Grange won third prize in the Community Division for their sponsorship of the Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Company as the Community Service Project.

90 10/27/78 The women of the Yankee Hill, Concow, Big Bend and surrounding areas have organized in support of the Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Company.  The group will hold weekly meetings at homes in the area.

91 11/3/78 Thermalito Irrigation District has completed repairs to the dam and the lake will begin to fill with the coming of the rain.  The Department of Fish and Game will restock the lake in the spring with fish of like species. The Rodgers Flat Fire started on Monday, near the derailed train.  The cause of the fire was listed by the Forestry as an escaped campfire.  The Forestry had estimated some 1800 acres had been involved in the fire, and there were approximately 800 men fighting the blaze.

92 11/10/78 Peter Paul Molchen Obituary.  Mr. Molchen resided with his daughter's family, the Andre Greicos', in Chico, for the last 3 years.  Services were held on November 7th in Chico; final resting place will be at Saint Barnabas Home in Pennsylvania.  A  burglary at the Concow Grange occurred sometime between Sunday and Tuesday afternoon. Taken were canned goods and other food items.  Election results for County of Butte Measure A ‐ Coal Burning Plant:   Yes ‐  120;  No ‐ 178.

93 11/17/78 World's Largest Jade Boulder Found in B.C.!   A  63,307 (over 31 tons)  jade boulder has been found and recovered in British Columbia.   Glimpse into the past!   Items taken from the Northern Enterprise, Chico, July 15, 1871:  Buckskin, the murderer of the Bilderbuck Brothers, has been shot and killed.  General Grant will leave for a visit to California on the 15th of August.  February 7, 1873; an attack on the Modocs by Captain Bernard's camp recently resulted in the total defeat of the Indians.

94 12/1/78 The State Forester recommended 20% thinning of sound trees around the lake with the harvest of bug kill trees.  Mr. Schmidt, Manager of Thermalito Irrigation District, says that the thinning was done in compliance with that recommendation.  The logging operations should be finished in two or three days.

95 12/8/78 During the past week there were several cases of Scarlet Fever reported at Spring Valley School. Glimpse into the past!   Taken from the Northern Enterprise, Chico, California, July 15, 1871:  A hunting party killed 4 grizzly bears and 4 cubs in Butte Creek Canyon.  The largest grizzly weighed 1,600 lbs.

96 12/15/78 Fire Station News:  The ham dinner last Saturday was a  complete success‐‐‐reports are that over $1,000.00 has been cleared!  The community meeting on December 7th was to ratify the proposed Constitution and By‐Laws for the Golden Feather Community Association. The unfortunate part was the fact that the main items and other reasons for the meeting never surfaced.  The group concerned with the development of Crain Park was allowed to hold the floor for the entire meeting.

100 1/26/79 T.I.D. sources say Lake Concow will very likely not be opened to fishing this year to allow the  Department of Fish and Game adequate time for the restocking process. Record prices were paid for gold at the United States gold auction where 300,000 ounces of the metal were sold by the Treasury Department in October.  The average price was $228.29 per ounce.

102 2/9/79 There are several old cemetery sites in the entire Golden Feather area. One is at the upper end of Lake Concow behind the confines of the Evich cyclone fence.  Due to vandals, there is very little remains to mark this site, but there are graves there dating back to the 1800's, one belonging to Cpl. White who was involved with moving the Indians out of Concow Valley on the long march to Round Valley Reservation.

103 2/16/79 Glimpse into the past!  A Marker at the Tebbe Cemetery near Deadwood is that of James Murry, died on June 27, 1885.  In this cemetery also lies the infant daughter of Ah Sang , the Chinese doctor at the Sanitarium at Deadwood in the 1800's. Infant Jessie was one year old and died in 1886. A Marker at the Conow Cemetery is that of Willie C. North, died in 1884, and Rufus North, died in 1893.  The last burial at the Concow Cemetery took place in 1946.

104 2/23/79 Concow Lake is now nearly full, thanks to all the rainfall of the past few weeks.  There will be no fishing permitted this year in order to give the newly planted fish time to grow and adjust to the environment.  At the Community Meeting in February, Frank Cuny reported on the development of the lower playing field at Concow.  Phase I will be undertaken as soon as weather permits.

109 3/30/79 Peggy Schandoney Obituary.  Passed away earlier this month in a Paradise hospital.  Peggy was a long time resident of Concow.  She and her husband Warren moved here from Whittier, California over 20 years ago.    The Cathedralite Dome Factory located on Highway 70 and Concow Road will move to Medford, Oregon in June in order to get closer to the lumber source.

111 4/13/79 Last Sunday afternoon, a fire destroyed the oldest home in the Concow area (the old Schager home).  It was located on Concow Road near the Camelot subdivision.  Estimates  place the home at 115 years old, being constructed in 1864‐5.  Apparently it was built by a man names Eckels.  The Golden Feather Community Association met on April 5th; approximately 30 persons were in attendance.  It was decided by unanimous vote to continue to organize the Association in view of the tremendous growth problems now confronting the area.

112 4/20/79 50th Wedding Anniversary!  The 50th wedding anniversary of Irwin and Hazel Whitmoyer was celebrated by 75 friends, neighbors and relatives on Easter Sunday at the Witmoyers' Yankee Hill home.  An open house was hosted by their children.

115 5/11/79 Cora Anderson Memorial.  Folks in the Golden Feather Community were deeply grieved at the sudden death of Cora Anderson, who was a precious friend to all concerned.  Cora and her husband, Earl, were recipients last year of the Concow Grange "Outstanding Citizens Award".  The Cora Anderson Memorial Youth Camp Fund has been established  to provide summer camp experience for the youth in the community, who otherwise might be denied this privilege.

116 5/18/79 The governing Board of Trustees of the Golden Feather Union School District granted a 14% pay increase to all classified and certificated employees of the district.  Enrollment currently stands at 208, with a graduating class of 18, and kindergarten enrollment at 12.

117 5/25/79 H.O. "Red" Sheley Obituary.   Passed away on May 17, 1979 in Sacramento from cancer complications. "Red",   who with his wife Hazel, resided at the Domes for several years. He was well known in the lumber industry and for his efforts in establishing an inter‐denominational church in the Golden Feather area.   Carroll "Smitty" Smith Obituary.  Passed away on Sunday in Feather River Hospital. Smitty and his wife, Lydia, lived for many years in Concow, near Crain Park.  He worked as a construction worker on the Oroville  Dam.

118 6/1/79 Thursday evening, 18 students will graduate from Concow School; There are reports of 18 new students who will enter kindergarten in the fall at Spring Valley School. Wednesday, an early morning  blaze destroyed the triple‐wide mobile home on the corner of Hoffman and Concow Roads.   Elsie M. Neher Obituary.  Passed away Sunday in a Chico hospital after a lengthy illness. Survivors include her husband, Herman.  Mrs. Neher and her family were long time residents of Oregon City.

119 6/8/79 The first meeting of the newly formed Golden Feather Community Association will be held tonight, (Thursday), June 7th at 6 p.m. at Concow School.   A helicopter crashed last Saturday while helping fight a fire, northwest of Frenchman Reservoir, on the Plumas National Forest . The pilot escaped injury.

120 6/15/79 The Golden Feather Community Association voted to send a letter to Butte County Department of Public Works regarding improvements on the roads in our area. The second annual Wild Mountain Fair will be held Sunday, June 17th at Crain Park, from noon until dark. Man caused forest fires on the increase in the Plumas National Forest!  Last year there were 9 man caused fires, compared to 16 this year.

121 6/22/79 At the regular meeting of the Governing Board of Trustees of the Golden Feather School District on June 14th, the Board  voted to drop Workmen' s Compensation, and to join the North Valley Schools Insurance to attempt to cut rising insurance costs.  The final enrollment was 207 in June, this is up by 22 over the 1978 enrollment figures.  The tentative budget for 79‐80 was approved in the amount of $513, 235.00.

123 7/6/79 David Andrew Lewis Obituary.  Oroville's latest murder victim, David Andrew Lewis, was murdered last weekend at his home in Oroville.  David attended Las Plumas High School, and served in the U.S. Army in 1975‐76.  He received an honorable discharge.  He was employed by Nor‐Cal.  His mother, MaryAnn Owen, was a former resident of this area.  She attended local schools.  David's Grandfather is Dave Dion, who resides in Yankee Hill.

126 7/27/79 The Butte Tribal Council has appointed a Policy Committee to handle the many problems in the management and development of a human service organization.  An endeavor currently underway is insuring that Butte County Indians have input into a Regional Transit Plan which is now in the County Planning Office.

128 8/10/79 Recently, a boy, was rescued  from the North Fork of the Feather River.  The boy, John Gramps,  was trapped in the water, funneled between two huge boulders, the current too swift to enable him to get out by himself, the rushing water up to his chin.  Working in an extremely difficult and dangerous situation, crew members from the Jarbo Gap Fire Station, assisted by the Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Company, rescued the boy.  It was reported, John Gramps and all who suffered from exposure have recovered.

129 8/17/79 The Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Company cleared     $1, 156.61 from the Ice Cream Social and Beef Raffle held on August 11th.  The winners of the beef were:  Margaret Terry ‐ First prize; Delmer Clemens ‐ 2nd prize; and Maggie from Maple Leaf Tavern ‐ 3rd Prize.  Irma Glenn, former resident of the area, came to enjoy the Ice Cream Social.  Irma and her husband Elmer, operated the service station at Jarbo Gap. many years ago, and after that ran Grand View for many years before moving to Orland.

130 8/24/79 On Monday afternoon, August 13 1979, a forest service employee, Don Messinger, was seriously injured by a falling tree. Don was struck and pinned beneath a tree that he felled. The accident occurred on the La Porte Ranger District in the Plumas National Forest.  He is listed in stable condition with back injuries.  On Saturday, August 18th, approximately one hundred and twenty family members and friends met in the Gold Room at Prospector's Village in Oroville,  to help Alyce and Ray Hendricks celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

131 8/31/79 At the Grange Annual Booster Night on August 25th, a special award was presented to Jay and Paolo Grieco for their aid to the Grange and for the donation of the land where the Grange is situated. Also, honored for her services to the community was Joyce Clark.  In addition to her contributions as a member and officer in numerous organizations, Joyce is the founder and editor of the Golden Feather Echoes!

132 9/7/79 At the public Budget Hearing for the 1979‐80 school year, The Golden Feather Governing Board of Trustees adopted the final budget in the amount of $870.022.  Enrollment on the first day showed the attendance records standing at 201.  Last year  the enrollment began at 185.

133 9/14/79 Thermalito Irrigation District Manager, Jim Schmidt, reported yesterday that vandals severely damaged Concow Dam over the Labor Day weekend.  Several large boulders were thrown or rolled from the dam top onto the drain valve handle and an emptying cone below.  The valve handles were broken and the cone sustained considerable damage.  Had the cone not held, the lake would have been emptied and the Concow fishery would have been destroyed.

134 9/21/79 The name for Dogwood Lane (between Ishi Trail and Crain Park Road on Concow Road) had to be changed because that name was already used in the Paradise area.  After many suggestions, Yellow Wood Road was agreed upon.  It was proposed by Joan Mayer.

136 10/5/79 At the Community Meeting this evening, Bob Norton will include in his report the possibility of establishing or re ‐establishing a cemetery district to care for the historic cemetery sites.  Glimpse into the Past!  Many cemeteries are scattered through the area, many with wooden markers eroded by time and elements.  Thermalito Irrigation District, has offered a $100.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the vandalism at the Concow Dam. Damages amounted to approximately $5,000.00.

137 10/12/79 Glimpse into the  Past!  During the 1930's and 40's;  The Rock House featured a bar and cabins for rent.  Jarbo Gap had a bar, service station and café.  Grand View had a tavern, grocery store and café.  The Pines Store housed a grocery store, bar and post office, as well as a gas station and cabins for rent.  Allinghams in Big Bend had cabins for rent, service station, bar, store and post office.  The Fremont Mine on Jordan Hill closed in the 30's.  The Surcease Mine in Big Bend continued on until the 1950's, along with various small time operations.

138 10/19/79 Yankee Hill Cemetery ‐ Past Profile!  Burials in the Yankee Hill Cemetery began in 1880, according to the oldest headstone.  In 1890, the U.S. Government granted a patent deed to John Goode, with the cemetery included in the parcel.  Fred Hart Obituary.  Passed away at his home (the log cabin off of Big Bend Road), last week.  He had been a long time resident of the area.  Fred and his wife Johanna, lived in Oroville prior to  moving here. Fred, was kind, quiet, generous and eager to share his vast library  and writings about his mathematical theories.

139 10/26/79 Supervisor Robert Winston will appear before the Golden  Feather Association on November 1st to discuss the problems of law enforcement and police protection in rural areas.  Fred Hart's vast library has been donated to Chico State, as he had requested.  The various department heads selected books for use by various classes and the other books selected went to the CSUC library.  All contain stickers stating they were donated by Fred Hart.

140 11/2/79 Supervisor Robert Winston was the guest speaker at the recent meeting  of the Golden Feather Community Association.  The discussion was about law enforcement in rural areas.  Many people feel that burglaries and neighborhood disputes are the only problems facing rural communities.  Not so, as evidenced by the recent drug‐related arrests in the Big  Bend area, and the following incident in Cherokee.  The partial remains of a white female were found near the town of Cherokee.  A portion of the torso,waist to knees, was found.

143 11/30/79 Myrtle Noel Obituary.  Passed away in an Oroville hospital on Wednesday evening after an extended illness.  She was 93 years of age.  Survivors included Freda Simmons (niece) and Mrs. Joyce Clark (niece), both of Concow.  Myrtle lived most of her life in the Pentz area, spending the last several years in Oroville.

145 12/14/79 Oliver Truex Obituary.  Passed away on Sunday in a Paradise hospital.  Oliver had lived at his ranch on Highway 70 for the past 33 years.  He was a member of the School Board of the old Cherokee School District and employed at Golden Feather School District from 1959 to 1967.  He was also a past Master of Concow Grange.  Oliver was born on December 25, 1907, in Indiana.  Tom Truex and his family will now reside at the Truex ranch on Highway 70.

147 1/4/80 During Christmas week Deputy Art Anderson in the Paradise area, was involved in a traffic accident.  He received multiple injuries and his four‐wheel drive vehicle was totaled.  The Sheriffs Department has pulled the local four‐wheel drive unit out of the Concow area.    According to Undersheriff Dick Stenberg, it is needed to replace the vehicle out of service‐‐‐ this should only be a temporary situation.

150 1/25/80 Gasoline availability in area is poor.  Grand View Service Station is again out of gas!  Fire above Concow was USDF control burn (out of control).  Some slashing from logging operations had been part of the controlled burn conducted by the U.S. Department of Forestry.  Apparently, winds fanned some of the embers and touched off a full fledged fire.  Lucy Bennett Obituary. Passed away Monday in a Chico hospital.  She was 83 years old.  Lucy resided in Chico most of her life and taught school in Yankee Hill for a time.

151 2/1/80 Rosalea Ruth Giles Obituary.  Passed away in a Paradise hospital. She was 73 years old. She is survived by her husband Omer of the home, and numerous family members.  Rush and Omer move to Butte County seven years ago and made their home in Concow on Kirby Creek Road.  Ruth was a member of the local chapter of the Golden State Mobil home Owners League.

152 2/8/80 Erma Vae Glenn Obituary.  Passed away Friday, February 1st in a Chico hospital.  She was born on November 1, 1905 in Missouri.  Erma and her husband Elmer were former residents of the Jarboe Gap area.  For many years they ran the restaurant, bar and an auto repair shop at Jarboe.  The Glenn's also ran the restaurant, bar and service station at Grand View for several years before moving to Orland in 1970.  Elmer died in 1973.

153 2/15/80 The Golden Feather Community Association met on February 7th, at Concow School to discuss several issues on the agenda.  Bob Norton gave a report on the Yankee Hill Cemetery, and said that he had received several obscene telephone calls over the issue. He felt that since  the interest in the cemetery was very minimal, the entire project should be dropped.  The Association voted  to drop the issue and leave the matter up to the owner.

156 3/7/80 On February 22, 1980, Shirley Leonard of Chico became the bride of Heine Gramps of Pulga.  They were married in Reno, Nevada   A wedding reception was held on February 24, 1980, at Grand View Café on Highway 70.

162 4/21/80 It has been called to the attention of the GFE by Jim Galli, Lake Warden, that vandalism has been occurring for some time at the recreation area on Hoffman Road on Lake Concow.   A new heliport facility has been constructed at Jarbo Gap to augment the fire fighting capability in this area.  Although it is presently only a landing pad, it nevertheless has the potential for greater operations.

163 4/28/80 Don Williams, long time trustee of the Golden Feather Union School District, now retired, was honored at a dinner last Friday evening by his peers, and staff members of Golden Feather.  Former board member Tobe Moak and former school employee Mary Ellen Brown, as well as Mr. James Quilter, former school superintendent of Golden Feather Union, were on hand to pay tribute to Don's years of service to the district.

165 5/12/80 The first meeting of what later would become the Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Co., was held in 1977 under the sponsorship of Concow Grange.  At this meeting, and subsequent monthly meetings, the basic concept of organization was developed and refined until 1978 when the organization was duly incorporated under charter of the State of California.  As a non‐profit organization it's sole purpose is to lend support to the local Fire Company which was designated Number 37 of the Butte County Fire Department.

167 5/24/80 Butte County Commission on Law Enforcement   Attempts are being made to find a solution for securing more effective law enforcement for rural areas.  Out of the discussions have surfaced some interesting figures.  It costs $17.74 per hour to man a patrol unit; at 8 hours a day, 365 days a year,  the cost for one patrol unit is  $51, 659 per year.

169 6/7/80 Election Results  (Pertaining to our local Golden Feather area)   Bob Lemke won the race for Supervisor for the Fifth District. Loyd H. Mulkey, Jr., veteran Chico attorney, beat out Will Mattly for Superior Court Judge, to replace the retiring Jean Morony. Measure B on the ballot won with a "Yes" vote which allows re‐arrangement of trustee areas in the Golden Feather Union School District.  Graduation For Concow School  On Wednesday evening, June 4th, Concow School graduated 31 students for the eighth grade.

172 6/26/80 Bob Saville of Yankee Hill Rd., was seriously injured on Tuesday, June 17th, when a battery he was working on at school exploded in his face, seriously injuring his right eye.  Complete bed rest because of a large blood clot in the eye was required.  He has returned to work doing light jobs.  Attention Please!  Regarding petition to place initiative to hire additional deputies for Butte County Sheriff's Department on the November ballot ‐‐‐signatures must be obtained by June 30th.

174 7/10/80 Monday, July 7, 1980, probably held no special significance for most residents of Yankee Hill, but for Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Lunt of Nelson Bar Rd., it marked their sixty‐third wedding anniversary.  The Lunts observed the day quietly in the privacy of their home. Since I am no longer able to devote the time necessary to properly carry out the duties of Editor‐typist, I relinquish my duties of the position to those people who so generously donate their time and talent to this paper   ‐‐‐  Joyce Clark .

176 7/25/80 Fire Station News       The pendulum of time is on the upswing again for the Fire Company and things are looking better and brighter every day.  The folks in the community have been real careful abut fires, and     everyone is guarding their health and safety.  Emergency calls for help have been few ‐ and that, we hope, will continue. Now we will concentrate on getting the medical aid/fire vehicle in tip‐top shape for any emergency and our fire fighters provided the opportunity to train with the new vehicle.

177 8/1/80 Fire danger on the Plumas Forest is now in the "HIGH" range.  Woodcutting is restricted according to daily fire danger conditions on the East and West sides.  There were five chainsaw fires in 1979 ‐ four of them caused by free‐use woodcutters!  Paradise Recreation & Park District sign‐ups will begin Tuesday, July 23, for the Special Bus Trip to Sacramento and the Ice Capades scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13.

180 8/22/80 Glen Swinney Obituary.  Glen, 18 years old son of Juanita and Don Eubank of Yankee Hill Road, lost his life Monday in a freak car accident in Oroville.  Glen graduated from Golden Feather School at Concow, and last June, from Oroville High School, with plans to attend Butte College this fall.  He was a member of Concow Grange #735.

181 8/29/80 Last Tuesday, August 26, the Butte County Board of Supervisors provisionally approved, with a 4‐1 vote, Sheriff Larry Gillick's 3‐step $1,500,00.00 plan to bring his department closer to parity with other North State Counties.  The Golden Feather School District has hired a new Superintendent/Principal.  Robert Throneberry has been on the job at Concow School since July 21, 1980.   Last Saturday evening, August 23,the Concow Grange honored Myra and Bill Wobbe of Big Bend Road with the annual Community Citizen's Award.

182 9/5/80 Paradise Rec. & Park District announces the Paradise Youth Symphony will be open to all serious students of music from the time they learn to play until their graduation from high school.  Needed will be full sections in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.    The Yankee Hill Ladies Club will hold their regular meeting Tuesday Sept. 9. 1:30 P.M.  Election of officers for the coming year will be held at this important meeting.

185 9/26/80 From  Quincy. Forest Supervisor Lloyd R. Britton announced that title to 1,723 acres of prime meadow land, adjacent to the Middle Fork of the Feather River was transferred from Ramelli Investment Group  to the United States of America.  The acquisition by the U.S. Forest Service is part of the program to keep the Middle Fork in its "free‐flowing" condition, and to maintain the adjacent scenic, recreation, wildlife, and water quality values, as directed by Congress when the Middle Fork was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 1968.

189 10/24/80 Fire Station News    Recognizing the important role of the Jarbo Gap Station in emergencies, the Volunteers have requested that this station be manned, not only during the normal fire season, but all year around.  For three years the County Fire Department has included funding for this purpose in their budget.  Knowing the vital part Jarbo Gap Station plays in our safety and security, we will continue to prevail upon Mr. Bob Lemke, our District Supervisor, to have Butte County provide the necessary funds, approximately $7,000, to afford us this vital protection.

190 10/31/80 Fire Station News.   Lately, our volunteers have responded to a variety of potentially dangerous emergencies.  First, the Feather River Canyon fires ignited by fireworks in a forested area; then the grass fire behind the Rock House; and now the burning of the Nicholson home on upper Concow Road.  Bill Holden Obituary.  Bill, a long time resident of Upper Concow, died on Friday, October 24, in a hospital in Orangevale, possibly of an aortic rupture.  Bill and his wife Audrey were very active in all community activities and held office in the Concow Grange for many years.

191 11/7/80 Good News ‐‐‐  Resident Deputy Sheriff approved for Golden Feather area.  Quincy ‐‐‐ The Forest Service is preparing an environmental analysis report for a trail to be constructed from Fall River, just above Feather Falls to Milsap Bar on the Middle Fork of the Feather River.  The trail would be 12 miles long, and provide, for the first time, direct access to two of the most spectacular waterfalls in the area.

192 11/14/80 Golden Feather Community Association.  An update on the Sheriff's Department staffing was given by Chairman Clark.  It would appear that the Butte County Board of Supervisors may be trying to renege on the commitment to fund the management study of the County's law enforcement needs and the increase in law enforcement staff.  The firefighters have  lost one of their most esteemed and respected members, our only lady firefighter, an original member, Nancy Lehmer.  She has moved to the Chico area.

195 12/12/80 Fire Station News.  Chief Jim Giles reported 3 medical aid and 2 fire calls last month.  Jack Bryson was elected to voting membership on the Board of Directors.  The outlook for a water tanker truck and a "quick attack" fire vehicle is very encouraging.  A site has been tentatively chosen for the Upper  Concow Fire Substation, and when the legal ramifications are placed in order and finalized, a full report will be made to the Community.

198 1/9?/81 The present day Golden Feather Echoes celebrates the beginning if its fifth year on January 14, 1981.  The GFE was the brain child of Carol Pyle, Alyce Hendricks, Jay Grieco, and Joyce Clark.  Lorin A. Balsley Obituary.   Passed away January 9th, 1981 at Salem Memorial Hospital in Salem, Ore.  He was born July 3rd, 1896, in Plymouth, Ca., Amador County, and had resided on Big Bend Road near Yankee Hill for over 40 years.  Lorin started working in the gold mines of Amador Co., at a very young age, and most of his life was spent as a prospector, miner and gold mine operator.

200 1/30/81 Ehmann House & Oregon City School.  A reception was held at the Ehmann House in Oroville on Sunday, January 18, to transfer the title from it's present owner to the Butte County Historical Society. The house will be restored and become the Society's new headquarters.  It was learned from Jim Lenoff, president of the Historical Society, that they had voted the previous month to try to save the Oregon City School.  They hope to  restore the school and landscape the surrounding property as a park.

203 2/20/81 The parents of the High Schoolers of this area met recently to discuss the problems lately in bus discipline. Dirt From Gert.  Did You Know???  Back in the early '30's, oranges constituted the No. 1 orchard crop in Butte County.  There were between 5,000 and 8,000 acres of orange trees in the County at that time.   A total of $1,048.056, was collected by the State from fish and game violations last year ... the most common violations were fishing without a license and having a loaded gun in a vehicle.

205 3/6/81 Fire Station News.  Our proposal to establish a fire sub‐station in Upper Concow has received favorable consideration from the Butte County Fire Department authorities, and now all signs are indicating "go".  Mable Moak Skaggs Obituary.   The Golden Feather Echoes has learned of the death of Mable Moak Skaggs.  Mrs. Skaggs was the youngest of ten children born to Sim and Mary Moak.  Sim Moak was a pioneer and Indian fighter in this area.

208 3/27/81 Fire Company No. 37.  The Golden Feather Volunteers were called out Wednesday at 5:30 A.M. to an accident on Highway 70, about 3 miles beyond Jarbo Gap, up in the canyon.  A man, unidentified at this time, driving a pickup truck apparently eastbound, missed a curve and hurtled about 200 feet into the canyon.  His body was removed from the wreckage by the Volunteers.   Elmer E. Rice Obituary.   The community was grieved to learn of the death of Elmer E. Rice of Pinkston Canyon Road.  Condolences are extended to his wife, Grace, and to Lucille and Steve Lamkin.  Mr. Rice was Lucille's father.

213 5/1/81 News Release, Calif. Dept. of Forestry.   The Calif. Dept. of Forestry and Butte Co. Fire Dept. is continuing its strict law enforcement policy this year, dealing with fire law violators.  The majority of citations last year were issued to residents who were in violation of their burning permit terms.  This resulted in fines being levied that totaled $8,048.

216 5/22/81 School Board Meeting  of Golden Feather  School    District  ‐ 5/14/81:  Graduation exercises will be on June 9,1981, at Concow School, with a class of 23 graduating.  Ken Lenhardt of Geddis & Driscoll & Associates presented a plan for sewage system for future needs of Golden Feather, estimated at a cost of approximately $20,000.00 and requiring approximately 3 acres plus of ground.

217 5/29/81 Mr. Jim Schmidt, Manager of T.I. D., reported that vandals have tinkered with Concow Dam once again .  Apparently, someone ‐ or ones ‐ lifted off a spillway flash board and threw it into the creek bed below the dam.  Board members Tuesday, approved a request by the Golden Feather Community Association that the county perform the necessary engineering and supply plans for modifying  blind 'S' curve in the area.  The "hazardous section of road" is located about a mile north of the school on Concow Road.

218 6/5/81 A $5,000.00 State grant was offered to the County to augment Sheriff Dept., expenses in carrying out this season's marijuana eradication program.  Hilda Wheeler plugged pretty hard in an attempt to sway the Board to accept the offer.  It was to no avail.  Her motion to take the money died for lack of a second!  Those refusing State drug eradication funds were  Supervisors Saraceni, Mosley, and Dolan.   The traditional Wild Mountain Faire will be held at Crain Park on Sunday, June 7th ‐ noon till dusk.

220 6/19/81 Robert Baily Obituary.  Robert Baily, better known as "Baby Huey", died last weekend.  Summer Solstice will be held in his honor.   Golden Feather Union School District Board Meeting.   The Oregon City school site was deeded over to the Butte County Historical Society, with a two year conditional clause, that improvements and repairs would continue to the end result of the goals set by the Historical Society, and an additional clause that the property could never be sold to an outside agency for the profit.

221 6/26/81 Remembering  by Cathryn Mahan.  Bill and I recently visited Jordan Hill and found some changes!!  We remember when we, Gene and Phoebe Scott and Fred Crafts were the only residents; when there were no telephones and the on communication with the neighbors was to "call on" them instead of "calling them up"; when the mail boxes were all at "Leggets' Corner"; the school bus turned around at Ray Giles';  when the traffic was heavy if more than two cars traveled Jordan Hill Road per day.

222 7/3/81 One more word about the tragic mishap in Dark Canyon last Saturday , in early morning.  Reports are that two young men from Modesto decided to sleep in their truck that night but somehow the brake was released and the truck plunged into the lake.  One young man was able to swim to shore and eventually found his way to Jarboe Gap to summon help  A Search and Rescue diving team found the truck about 100 feet under the surface but no sign of the other man.  A search continues.

223 7/10/81 A tragic fire occurred in the Golden Feather community about 6:30 A.M., Wednesday, which claimed the life of Squire Clayborn, infant son of Shelley and Jack Clayborn.  The family was residing at the time in a trailer home on the Frank Cuny property near the Rock House.  Cause of the fire has not been determined but an exploding butane tank was reported to have immediate destruction and prevented any rescue attempt.  Shelley was hospitalized for severe burns.

225 7/24/81 Boy Scout News.  Seven Boy Scouts from Troup #32 have qualified and are going to the National Scout Jamboree at Ft. A. P. Hill in Fredricksburg, Va.  One of the boys is Frank Cuny, age 13, who is from this area.  The boys will leave Thursday, July 23, and will be gone 3 weeks.   On Sunday, July 26, Frank Cuny will take his Scout Troop on a one week camp trip to Camp Lassen in Butte Meadows.

226 7/31/81 "What is the Grange"  by Rita Moore, Master.  I would like to take this time to tell of just a few things that Concow Grange has done for this community.  1.  They worked hard, but in the end did get our mail route for us.  2.  With a lot of hard work they managed to get the telephone lines for our community.  3.  The Grange as a whole got our 8 party line cut down to 4 party lines.  4.  The Volunteer Fire Company was begun on the Grange floor.  The old Concow School (one room) was the first meeting place.

233 9/17/81 Fire Station News.  During the past month, the Volunteers have responded to six "call outs".  Last Saturday's "Fire Fighter Appreciation Day " picnic at Durham Park was a great success ‐ and the highlight (for us) was the Special Award given to our own Fire Chief ‐ Jim Giles.   Golden Feather Union School District Enrollment:     We have an enrollment of 232 students at the end of our first week of school.  This is the largest enrollment Golden Feather Union School District has ever had.

235 10/2/81 Travel Notes  ‐  ‐  By Ray Hendricks  Ogden, Utah is a pretty little city situated on the west slope of the spectacular Wasatch Mountains overlooking the Great Salt Lake and desert beyond.  Much could be written about the tremendous growth of industry and population in Wyoming.  The little town of Evanston is dotted all about with oil well rigs.  Rock Springs has come alive again with the vast coal deposits. Rawlins, once a quiet sheep town and railway division point ‐‐ now a booming uranium mining center.

236 10/9/81 Travel Notes ‐‐ By Ray Hendricks  The Independence Rock   ‐‐ a high rounded granite rock.  Visible for miles, is a landmark at the confluence of the Sweetwater and North Plate Rivers, and aptly named "Register of the Desert" 1840.  Early travelers by inscribing names and dates were thus able to communicate with others who would follow.  Many inscriptions were epitaphs of those killed in Indian raids or succumbed to the frigid cold of winter or the blistering   heat of summer.

239 10/30/81 Fire Station News  ‐‐  by Ray Hendricks   Lief Steinberger did a beautiful job digging the hole for the septic tank at the new fire station.  How can digging a hole be described as beautiful?  Well, when a backhoe can be operated to dig a hole about 6 ft. by 10 feet and 8 feet deep with all sides perfectly smooth and plumb, and the floor level ‐‐‐  the description is appropriate.  The    septic tank, a 1000 gallon, 8000 lb. monster, was lowered in without any problems and fit perfectly.

240 11/6/81 Fire Station News  ‐‐ by Ray Hendricks   "It never rains but it pours" ‐‐ that old saying implies a world of truth and after the last rainstorm our Fire Company can vouch for it.  The good job of setting the septic tank in place turned out to be a disaster after the downpour.  The tank floated like a boat in the pit, tilted on about a 30 degree angle to the port side, filled with water and sank in that position.  What a mess!  Too bad it wasn't  filled with water first as it should have been.

242 11/20/81 Friday the 13th ‐  Feather River Canyon.  By Sally Lewand. After hunting and camping in Montana for a month, we decided to head home.  We didn't hit rain until Beckworth Pass.  Just past Injun Jim School we hit wind.  Around the bend at Rock Creek Reservoir we were stopped by wind, rain, rocks and branches flying directly at us. We turned on the C.B. and got the truck and trailer we'd passed at Rock Creek.  He was sitting with 2 busted headlights and cracked windshield, AND his trailer had been on its side a few hours earlier!  He hadn't decided NOT to try to get out, but while talking to us, he watched a truck and camper blow off the road and into the river.

243 12/4/81 Fire Station News:  Although designated a Fire Company, our Volunteers,  have been called upon and have responded  to all kinds of emergency situations.  Remember the rescue of the boy caught in the North Fork and saved from drowning, and the youngster lost in the woods, found by the firefighters?  When power lines are downed or when  rock slides and other obstructions are encountered, the firefighters are there.  They were even called upon to save property from flood damage when rising water, resulting from a debris clogged culvert, threatened all the houses and cabins at Point Dawn on Big Bend Rd.

247 1/15/82 School News from the Golden Feather Union  The Board of Trustees of the Golden Feather Union School District appointed Dr. James Ackley as interim superintendent and Mr. Rick Peryam as interim teaching principal.  They will conduct the business of the school district until June 30, 1982.  Pollution & Burning Permit Fees Rejected!   R. Hendricks With the more than 400 people opposed to the proposed increase in County air pollution fees, that crowded the Supervisor Board room and around the County Administration Building, little wonder that the Supervisors voted unanimously to reject the whole idea.

248 1/29/82 Golden Feather Echoes Anniversary.   One day in January, 1977, Carol Pyle, Alyce Hendricks and Jay Grieco met with Joyce Clark in her home at Concow to talk about starting a newspaper for communication and being in touch with the Concow, Pulga, Yankee Hill, Big Bend, Cherokee & Pentz areas.  We are five years old today!   James H. Flint Obituary.  Mr. Flint passed on last week.  He was the husband of Kay Flint and dad  to Karroll Satmeister.  The United States Flag was presented to Mrs. Flint and will be erected in front of the Dome Store to honor the memory and patriotism of Mr. Flint.

252 2/26/82 Fees ‐ A Form of Uncontrolled Taxes:  Ray Hendricks  It sometimes seems as though we must be more on the lookout for what our elected officials are doing to us, then what we elected them to do for us.  The folks in the Golden Feather community have been alert to what is going on in our County government, and have taken positive action to avoid unwise regulatory practices, unfair imposition of fees and taxes, and especially, the wasteful spending of public funds.  One more fee schedule "rip‐off" has appeared and it may be the forerunner of a host of new regulations.  This time it comes in the guise of Public Health.

253 3/5/82 Fire Protection Tax  ‐  Ray Hendricks It was pointed out in The Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Co. annual report for 1981, that our County Supervisors were seriously considering a special tax, or  Assessment District Fees for fire protection.  According to information released now, a basic fee would be applied to all properties in the unincorporated areas.  Then a second fee would be charged based on the square foot size, the use, and the potential fire hazard of each parcel.  Truly an ambiguous, hypothetical and arbitrary projection.

254 3/12/82 News Roundup  ‐  By Ray Hendricks        By stint of hard work we have successfully prevailed upon the Country Board of Supervisors to reject the proposed fire protection tax.  Supervisors Wheeler, Moseley and Saracini recommended rejection and Dolan favored the proposal.  So for now at least ‐ no fire protection tax.                                                                                The Soap Box:  Howard A. Clark        Jim Schmidt & Messrs. Wilcox & Brown came up to report progress on T.I.D.'s proposed hydro power plant.  Jim stated T.I.D. will have to raise $600,000.00 up front money before anything else can be done.

255 3/19/82 Herman Deuker Obituary.  Mr. Deuker passed away March 16 after a lengthy illness.  He is survived by his wife Lois of Cirby Creek Rd. American Indian Program on March 16  by Smokey Jones showed the children things he had made and collected such as musical instruments, skins and hides.  Items included arrowheads, bowls of soapstone, baskets, bows, arrows, jewelry, pipes and purses.  He gave a history and legends from the Concow (koon‐cow) tribe.  Smokey Jones comes from the Koon‐cow tribe and went to Concow School as a boy.

258 4/9/82 The Soap Box:   Howard A. Clark   Howard Jarvis, while touring Canada on a speaking tour, was stricken by an attack of internal bleeding.  Last news was that he was receiving constant transfusions & was in very serious condition.  Let's hope, for his sake, that he recovers soon and, for our sakes, that he will still be able to testify at our coming trial.  Speaking of trial, the boys on the other side are playing a down and dirty game.  Trying to stall & confuse.  As I mentioned last week, if you have no case about all you can do is try to terrorize the opposition.

259 4/16/82 The Soap Box:    By Howard A. Clark    Emergency Special Meeting I have just come from the Courthouse where a turn of events forces me to call a special meeting of members, in good standing of the Golden Feather Community Association, on Tuesday, April 20th at 7:30 P.M. at Concow School.  Judge Vandergrift announced in court this morning that because of financial interests, he may not rule in our case unless all parties involved sign waivers permitting his continued participation in the case.

260 4/23/82 Travel Notes:  by Ray Hendricks.  Years ago, the thought of travel into Death Valley could not be considered a pleasure trip.  The place was so remote and inaccessible few people could survive the extreme changes in temperature from freezing to near boiling as descent is made from the 4317 foot mountain pass to the valley floor lying more than 200 feet below sea level.  Today we are able to travel, leisurely and comfortably in this once forbidding and foreboding valley called Death.  Accommodations are generally available only during the winter months because of the normal 100 degree to 120 degree summer temperature.

261 4/30/82 The Soap Box:   Howard A. Clark   Zoning Meeting ‐ May 11th, 7:30 P.M.   1. What the County Planners wish to do is to complete the Land Use Element & Area Zoning together so as to present a completed package to the Board of Supervisors for their consideration.  2. Candidates of the evening will feature three more Sheriff hopefuls.  They will be Captain Wood, Sgt. Larry Schuchert and a Mr. O'Neal.  3. Butte County lawyers waited until yesterday morning to announce that their clients would not sign the waiver to permit Judge Vandegrift to continue the lawsuit. So now we go back to square one ‐‐‐ or do we?

262 5/7/82 Where Is Everybody ?  It seemed incredible, but it was true!  No One from the Golden Feather Community attended the Box Social Dinner and Dance sponsored by the Golden Feather Volunteer Fire Co., at Concow School last Saturday, May 1st.  No one except the Firefighters themselves and their families, and a few who presently are, or have been actively involved in the organization.  But there were two couples from Paradise who attended and were obviously dismayed by the lack of support by the local people.

263 5/17/82 Obituaries:  Dorothy H. Miller,  mother of Evelyn Steinberger and Paul (Bill) Miller of Concow Rd., passed away May 10, 1982 after a long illness.  For several years she lived in a rest home in Paradise, Ca. Charles Marion Upton passed away Thursday May 6 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinez, Calif.   Survivors include his wife "Frosty" and two children, Herbert O'Neal and Dorothy Heil. Howard Woodson Neel of Yankee Hill passed away Saturday May 8th.  Survivors include his wife Bettie, daughter Colleen Sue Neel of Yankee Hill and a son Howard Neel of Oroville.

264 5/21/82 Travel Notes  ‐‐  by Ray Hendricks In the 1860's and 1870's, the "boom and bust" mining era at Death Valley attracted my people and new towns came into being.  Among them, but all in ruins now, are Panamint City, Chloride, Keane Wonder, Bullfrog, Rhyolite, Greenwater and Skidoo.  Then in the 1880's, borax, the "white gold of the desert" was profitably mined.  The Eagle Borax Works, operating successfully from 1883 to 1887, closed because more valuable deposits were found closer to the railhead in Mojave.  Thus the 165 mile transport by mule team became unnecessary and another colorful chapter in our history of the west came to a c lose.

265 5/28/82 Oliver  Holmes Lunt Obituary.   Mr. Lunt  passed away May 21, 1982.  He was born October 4, 1887 on the old Washburn place on Concow Road.  At the age of 2 months, he and his parents moved to the place on Nelson Bar Road, which was homesteaded by his grandparents in the 1850's. He lived here most of the rest of his life.  Everyone who knew Oliver Lunt knew him to be a rugged individual and he was that way all his life.  He leaves his wife, Leola, his son Donald W. Lunt of Yankee Hill and numerous family members.

266 6/4/82 Death Threats and Vicious Vandalism    When Phil Meyers returned to his home in Jarboe Gap, across the road from the Rock House were he works, last Friday night (May 14th) he found that his personal belongings had been scattered all about.  A call to the Sheriff disclosed that no one was available to investigate.  Subsequently, he received two telephone calls, seemingly from the same person, threatening his life and stating that he soon would be a dead man.  On Saturday night when he returned home from work  ‐‐‐ the inside of the house was a shambles!

267 Travel Notes   ‐‐   by  Ray Hendricks   A visit to Death Valley is not complete without a visit to Scotty's Castle and the Death Valley Ranch. There is an abundance of water here despite the barrenness of the hills.  A six inch water main from a 44,000 gallon reservoir having a pressure of 95 lbs per square inch, was laid in Grapevine Canyon.  The water was used to power a Pelton water wheel turbine to generate electric power.  The water then flowed throughout the grounds of the castle complex, and, when completed, would have also filled a 260 ft. long swimming pool.

268 6/18/82 Concow School Activities for the Month of June Include:                  Field Trip ‐‐ 25 students from the drama class and the band will take a bus trip to the Ashland Shakespearean Festival in Oregon on June 15 and 16.   Awards Assembly ‐‐ will be held on June 17 for sports academics, citizenship and various other categories.     Graduation Ceremonies ‐‐ will be held on June 17th at 7:00 P.M. at Concow School.  Sacramento Field Trip ‐‐ Students went through several railroad cars at  the Railroad Museum and saw several antique engines.  They also enjoyed going through Sutter's Fort and the Indian Museum.

269 6/25/82 Concow Graduation Ceremony   Concow School graduation ceremonies were held at 7:00 P.M., Thursday, June 17 for 24 eighth grade students.   Butte County Fire Department News  Bill Teie, Butte County Fire Warden and Ranger‐in‐Charge of the Butte Ranger Unit, pointed out that debris burning and equipment use fires are the two leading causes of fires in Butte County this season.

270 7/2/82 Awards Assembly  On June 17 Concow School held its Awards Assembly.  Les Geiger, Transportation Supervisor, made a presentation honoring all of Golden Feather Union School District's outstanding bus drivers.  A special award was given to Leo Neher for driving 200,000 miles in 20 years.  Congratulations to John Boynton, Earline Giles, Debbie Ingvoldsen, Leo Neher, Bob Saville, Bill Woods, and Ann Yelland.  Perfect Attendance Award was given to Jason Fratres of the 4th grade.

274 7/30/82 Dirt from Gert  Wild Animals. Young Bill was coming home from Paradise early Wednesday morning ‐‐ just before he got to the Domes store a great big mountain lion jumped out of the bushes & went up the bank on the east side of Hiway 70. Also heard of a Concow resident's young goat, tethered in the front of the house, being attacked by a puma who walked off with a portion of the goat in spite of the owner's loud yell at it ‐‐‐ then there was the bear who smashed Moak's & Schmidt's beehives a few weeks ago!

275 8/6/82 News Release    California Department of Forestry;                            Butte County Fire Department.  Contact:  John T. Tibbetts  Bill Teie, Ranger‐in‐Charge and County Fire Warden, California Department of Forestry and Butte County Fire Department, states that fines levied against fire law violators in Butte County have totaled $1,398.00 for June/July, 1982.  Twenty violators who were cited in the last two weeks have yet to appear in court. The most common violations the CDF/BCFD Peace Officers have been issuing citations for are:  Violations of terms of burning permit, and allowing a fire to escape control.

276 8/13/82 The Soap Box:     Howard A. Clark  The G.F.C.A. membership intends to be involved in the projected hydro‐power projects proposed for the canyon above Pulga.  Jim Doane Obituary.  Jim Doane, a new resident of Concow, was tragically killed last Friday night following an argument in front of Grand View Restaurant about 9 P.M..  Jim, Merrilee and Christopher have lived at Point Dawn since May 9, 1982. Funeral Services will be held at the Dome Store Picnic area at 7 P.M. on Thursday, August 12.  Ashes will be scattered at Dark Canyon at Sunset.

277 8/20/82 Report from Concow Grange.  One hundred and five guests attended the June 12th Swiss Steak Dinner; one hundred and twenty‐seven guests attended the July 10th Swiss Steak Dinner.  Our August 4th meeting had 15 members attending and Master Rita Moore presiding.  Main theme was much interest in building in the surrounding area.  The ground was broken for the new kitchen; the new fire building is going up rapidly; and right around the corner from the grange the new Seventh Day Adventist Church is advancing at an amazing pace. Submitted by, Lecturer Less Evans

278 8/27/82 Fire Station News:  The Ice Cream Social held on Saturday, August 14, was a great success.  It was well attended and featured something of interest for everyone including a Wheel of Fortune, Dunk Tank, live entertainment and lots of ice cream and cookies.  A gas powered weed‐eater was raffled during the evening and Don Arndt of Big Bend Rd. was the lucky winner.

279 9/3/82 The community along with neighbors and friends, extend their deepest sympathy to the families of Trisha Lynn Holliman and Lisa Mastromatteo.  These two young people lost their lives in an accident Wednesday night, August 25, at the intersection of Durham‐Pentz and Clark Roads.  Eight year old Trisha lived on Detlow Road with her mother and step‐father, Tressie and Clifford Nimz.  Mr. Nimz, driver of the car, is in Enloe Hospital in serious condition.

280 9/10/82 History Lives On After Landmark Destroyed.  Fire of undetermined cause destroyed one of Yankee Hill's few remaining landmarks the night of August 31.  It was the ancient residential structure on what was known for many years as the Lyman Brown Ranch.  The home was built around 1860 by Joe Miller (no relation to the present‐day Millers) and sold to Lyman Brown in the early 1900's.    Contributed by Peggy Moore.    Norval A. Engasser Obituary.  The last "Goodbyes" were silently spoken on September 8 for Norval  Engasser at Scheer Memorial Chapel in Oroville.   Norval and his wife Catherine managed the Park Hill Trailer Court & General Store on Big Bend for a number of years.

282 9/24/82 Personals:    Pearl Brooks, on Big Bend Road, entertained her sister, Vera King, brother‐in‐law Al Morris and good friend, Viola Toth, all of Petaluma, Calif.  Due to car trouble, Vera's son and daughter‐in‐law were called to the rescue of stranded travelers.  They were Mike and Diane Prevette, also of Petaluma.  So an unplanned but very enjoyable visit was had by all.  While here, they also enjoyed a visit with the Lyman Moaks.  Mike Prevette can be remembered as the son of H.O. "Bud" Prevette who drove the High School Bus in about 1948 while the Prevettes were residents of Yankee Hill.

283 10/1/82 The Soap Box:   Howard A. Clark  At our last meeting the attending members voted to endorse Bob Hewitt for Oroville Justice Court Judge.  It was also determined that we continue our lawsuit against the libraries.  I will have a very interesting news release to read to you at our next meeting.  Our little group is getting some attention from national figures!  Also, we will be hosting Sheriffs' candidates Brooks and Woods along with Supervisor hopefuls, Fulton and McDonald, for a little debate.

284 10/8/82 Dirt from Gert Would You Believe???    Hunting and Fishing costs will be going up next year ‐‐‐ on Jan. 1,  fishing licenses will go up from $6.25 to &6.75 with inland waters and trout and salmon stamps, now $2.50 & 3.73 raising to $2.75 & $4.00.  On July 1, 1983 hunting licenses now costing $12.50 will jump to $13.25, plus deer tags now $3.75 for one deer and $10.00 for two will go to $4.00 and $10.75 and on and on     ‐‐‐Good Grief ‐‐‐

285 10/15/82 The Soap Box:  Howard A. Clark Telephone Enlightenment! Diane Carey, regional manager, explained to me that the tariff criteria to meet a special rates consideration (single party service) requires 100 hookups per square mile.  When we reach that home density in Yankee Hill, Big Bend, Concow, etc., then we will qualify as a special rate area.  We will be wired for private party line at a more expensive rate than is paid in the cities.

286 10/22/82 Dirt from Gert   Did you Know ???    R. E. Olds, who began manufacturing the first United States' gasoline driven autos in 1899, is reportedly the first company to turn out a racing car.  By 1903 organized racing began up and down the hills and streets in many communities .  These races became annual events, all leading to the king of auto racing ‐‐‐ the 500 Mile Indianapolis Memorial Day Race.

287 10/29/82 The Soap Box:   Howard A. Clark.  Being involved with Bob Hewitt's Campaign has been quite an educational experience.  I'm certainly finding out how things are run down in Oroville‐ and you know‐Bill Talbitzer was right!  Nothing much has changed with the way things are done since the 1800's.  It's still who has the money & who has what on who.  Pillow talk beats debate and bucks & brawn are viewed as bigger than brains.  I guess it will always be with mankind that nothing changes but fashion styles.

289 11/12/82 The Soap Box:  Howard A. Clark    With the proposed shortfall projected for next year, it appears the new libraries will not even be opened!  The  indenture entered into by the County calls for us to pay for the buildings whether we get to use them or not!  $400,000.00 per yr. for the privilege of paying for someone's  #1 greed!.  In the meantime Public Works has been cut $3,000,000.00 in the past two years ‐ and ‐ the Sheriff's Dept.?  Well every promise ever made by Board members to their constituents (us), has been broken.  County Law Enforcement is now dead in the water for all intents & purposes.
