Center Supervisor's MessageThis June, my oldest daughter, Brigid, graduates from high school. I was working here at the Milwaukie Center 18 years ago when she was born. Wow, how time flies! I imagine readers of this article can look back on how different
things are now than they were 18 years ago.
While many things change in the world and here at the Center, our core mission and values as an organization have remained the same as when the Milwaukie Center was founded almost 40 years ago. We aim to be a place where everyone is welcome. We look to create a vibrant community where a volunteer work force enhances and enables the staff to provide vital services in our community. Staff is continuously looking to provide interesting and enriching activities and classes. My hope is that the Milwaukie Center lives up to its vision for all the citizens of NCPRD who wish to utilize our services.
I love to hear from people who are happy with our services, and need to hear from people who are not satisfied. Please feel free to stop in, call, or email me directly with any comments or concerns you may have. It is the community’s investment in the Milwaukie Center that makes it the great place that it is.
Marty Hanley, Center Supervisor (503) 794-8058 [email protected]

The Milwaukie Center is pleased to announce that two of our own -- Stan Catherman and Jerald Bagge -- have been honored with a personalized handmade quilt to thank them for their service in our nation’s military.
The Quilts of Valor program is a nationwide foundation that began in 2003. These quilts were handmade by volunteers from the Milwaukie Center. It serves as a token that unequivocally says, “Thank you for your Service, Sacrifice and Valor.”
Stan works at the Center in Building Maintenance and is always willing to step in and get the job done for us. We depend on him for a multitude of tasks and are ever grateful for his knowledge and dependability.
He served from 1984-1991 as a U.S. Navy Diver in charge of Aviation Water Survival to Pilots and Air
Crew. He trained and was stationed in San Diego prior to working on the Robert E. Peary FF1073 out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he attended 2nd Class Dive School.
He has a lovely wife, Mollie and four children, Graham, Jordan, Tylie and Ellerie.Stan is originally from Riggins, Idaho, where his love of whitewater rafting began. The two words he used to described being presented a Quilt of Valor were “honored” and “humbled”.
Jerald drives one of our Milwaukie Center buses. We appreciate his cheerful personality that makes every trip special.
He served in the U.S. Navy as well, from 1965-1971 in Vietnam as a Rescue Swimmer for Helicopter Combat Support, Squadron One – HC-1.
Upon his return stateside, he joined the Oregon Air National Guard in Portland. From 1977-1998 he served as a Weapons Control Electronic Tech working on the F101, F-4 and F-15.
In 2007 Jerald retired after 36 years in uniform. He lives in Canby with his lovely wife, Carolyn. Together they have four children, Kimberly, Keith, David and Kimberly (yes, there are two Kimberlys).
Jerald is deeply touched with receiving his Quilt of Valor and expressed that he felt that some significant healing occurred through this recognition. He said it was like getting the hug he never got when he returned home in 1970.
We are proud to have these two fine gentlemen be a part of the Milwaukie Center. We thank them for their service, and our hope is that these Quilts of Valor will remind them of how much they are appreciated. It is an honor to know them both.
If you have someone you would like to nominate for a Quilts of Valor, contact Lynda Lutz, NW Oregon State Coordinator, [email protected], (503) 312-0962.

FIT TIPS WITH HERTA
Exercise for Fall Prevention and Balance Do you have a fear of falling? Have you noticed your balance isn’t as good as it used to be? What is balance and how can it be improved? “Balance is the ability to maintain the body’s position over its base of support whether moving or stationary.” (Roger et al. 2013) Falls occur when the body is unable to respond to a disturbance in balance, which can come from an external or internal influence. An external influence might be the throw rug in the bedroom or the extension cord in the living room. It could be the poor lighting over some porch steps, or the uneven ground at the local park. Internal influences include, but are not limited to, changes in vision or hearing, medications causing dizziness, peripheral neuropathy of the feet, and some chronic health conditions. All of these influences can put you at a higher risk of falling.
One of the major risk factors for falling is muscle weakness in the legs and arms. The lack of regular physical exercise leads to muscle weakness, and it’s the one thing we have the most control over to reduce our risk of falling. Incorporating weight bearing exercise and resistance training can increase muscle strength, which in turn better supports the skeletal system and leads to better balance. Participating in a fall prevention risk assessment or muscular strength and balance testing can give you the information you’ll need to increase strength and improve balance.
Herta McClenahan is an ACE-certified Personal Trainer, Orthopedic Exercise Specialist and Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist. She operates Integrated Fitness, a private fitness studio in Milwaukie, and currently teaches classes here at the Milwaukie Center.
Check out the Matter of Balance class being held here at the Milwaukie Center, page 6.
There are some simple exercises that can be done at home with minimal equipment to improve muscle strength and balance. Start with sit-to-stands, seated leg extensions, standing leg curls and single-leg balance exercises. Be sure there is something sturdy to hold onto for extra stability, such as a counter, table or non-rolling chair. Once we have fallen, our fear of falling again becomes a risk in and of itself. There are many programs and classes available on fall prevention, and trained professionals to assist with building muscular strength. Be sure to ask your medical professional for recommendations and before starting a new fitness program.
