GWRRA – Arizona
Chapter “K” Kachina Chapter
October-November 2015

Director’s Corner
By: Becky Sangster Chapter Director
There will be a ride to Kitt Peak after the Chapter
meeting on October 24th
. If you might still be
hungry after your breakfast at the Golden Corral,
please bring a brown bag lunch.
As you know, October 31st thru November 1
st is the
Arizona District Convention at the El Conquistador
Hotel at 1000 N. Oracle Rd. There will be a lot of
activities and courses (for example: trailing, team
riding, First Aide & CPR, and co-riding) to
participate in. One of the highlights of the
convention is the drill teams. Our Chapter is leading
rides on Friday (1:00-4:00) and Saturday (8:00-
11:00). The rides are basically the same but just in
reverse. Check out the CONVENTION
SCHEDULE located in this newsletter. Day passes
are available for each day, so please come and join
us.
Because our monthly meeting in NOVEMBER falls
on THANKSGIVING week-end, our meeting is
RESCHEDULED - the same time and location but
on Saturday, DECEMBER 5th
.
RIDE OFTEN, RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!!!!

Chapter Educator’s Corner
Get MAD When You Are Wet
By Bob Berry Riding in the rain is certainly not as much fun as riding
on a nice sunny day. But have you noticed that, when
roads are wet, many of our riders become very tentative in
cornering, most working very hard at not leaning their
Wings. To be sure, wet surfaces yield less traction, but
not as much as you might think.
This was demonstrated to the Rider Education TEAM
during Wing Ding 37 when Dunlop Tires hosted a visit
to their proving grounds. During the Huntsville,
Alabama facility tour, a Dunlop test rider boarded a
2012 GL 1800 and took it for several “road speed” laps
around Dunlop‟s test circuit. The surprise was that the
track was awash with a heavy layer of water on the
curve in front of the spectators. The rider never slowed
and rode through at almost peg-scraping lean angles
demonstrating the efficiency of motorcycle tires to grip
the road in these conditions. This, of course, was a good
pitch for Dunlop tires. But it clearly demonstrated the
advantage of any motorcycle tire having a tread pattern
that continues partway up the stiff sidewall securing the
adhesive friction in a lean necessary to keep the shiny side
up. So, while gentle braking and maneuvering is prudent,
traction is not the main concern for us in wet weather
riding. “OK, Bob. So what is,” you may ask.
Other users of the road, i.e. motorists -- they have
enough trouble seeing us in perfect conditions, but
add rain covered windshields, road spray, low light,
and poor traction management, and our problems
increase exponentially. Our Motorist Awareness
Division presentations urge motorists to give
motorcycles more space, as much as five seconds in
low visibility conditions. And we, as the leadership of
GWRRA, can help MAD get that message across by
Talking with…well, just about anybody.
Download the MAD brochure from the GWRRA
website and keep a copy handy. Then think about the
times you have been asked by non-riders, “what do you
do when it rains?” Instead of talking about rain gear,
how about talking about what they can do to help us
stay safe? If you do that, no one will think you are all wet.

Dinner and an Eclipse
Evening ride to Oracle for dinner during the eclipse
started out with the sun setting and the moon hidden
behind one of the few large clouds in the sky. As
the daylight faded the moon became visible and the
eclipse showed off for us. We bounced between
inside and out , keeping track of the progress of the
eclipse while we ate dinner. Diners / riders included
Becky & Mike Sangster, Jerry Weren , Maryann &
Jerry Jordan, Bob & Carey Ricard, James Bleess
and Mike & Nancy Hrigora.
WISDOM CAFE
Riders Jerry & Maryann Jordan, Bob & Carey
Ricard, Jerry Weren , Ron Penner, DW Geary , Bob
& Althea Berry , Jon & Liz Bailey , Mike and
Becky Sangster cruised thru Sonoita and Patagonia
on their way to Wisdom Café. Pretty day for a ride.
Chapter Safe Miles Program
Please remember to submit your miles each month
at the chapter meeting on the “sign in sheet” or
email them to Nancy Hrigora by the end of each
month. [email protected]
Please put ‘SAFE MILES AZ-K ‘ in the subject
line. This makes it easier to identify your email.

THOUGHTS from MIKE
Submitted by Mike Hrigora
How do they get animals to cross the road only at
the signs ....
If a parsley farmer is sued, do they garnish his
wages ……..
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?
Why is there an expiration date on Sour cream?
GWRRA INFORMATION Due to popular demand Wing Ding 38 has been

Saturday pattern. The new dates are August 31 –
September 3 , 2016.

AZ DISTRICT CONVENTION INFORMATION
Donna and Dan Humphrey also have been busy
over the last couple of months lining up vendors to
attend. I talked to Accessory Pit at both the Utah
and Colorado Conventions last month and they tell
me they will be at our Convention also.
We have both the Arizona and California Drill
Teams performing again this year on Saturday but
we know they can't start until the Motorcycle Color
Guard has presented the colors.
Our entertainment after the Saturday Night Dinner
is going to be different than what we have in the
past so be sure and register for the dinner to insure a
good seat
Word has it that Barri Critzman (the better half of
our International Motorist Awareness Directors will
have a new Power Point presentation to be shown at
the end of the Masters Breakfast Sunday Morning
so plan on seeing it.

Gently Used Item Table
Chapter R will be taking care of the Door & Grand
Prize room along with the “Gently Used” table. SO
if someone in the chapter has some gear or parts
they want to get rid of , here is the place. Please ,
you must leave a way of be contacted. The District
nor Chapter R will NOT BE RESPONSIBLE for
the items. Seller has to return to the room and
pickup or sell their items by 3 PM.
Door Prize Room
Door Prize room is open Saturday and will close at
3 pm to draw the winning tickets. Winners will be
posted on a board so all can check starting at 4:30
pm.
Mascot Display
Mascot display will be setup on Saturday between
8 am – 9 am in the Presidio ballroom 4 area.
AZ District Convention - Costume Contest
We'll be hosting a costume contest, much like we did
last year. We will try to set the judges table up in the
vendor room like last year and have all contestants be
judged there. I will be needing three independent
judges, so if you or anyone you know would like to
help, they are more than welcome. Judging will be
Saturday 10am to 2pm. If you'd like to take a break
during the Drill Team performance, we can do that.
Now, the judging will be based on two categories:
Funniest Halloween theme and Scariest Halloween
theme. Example, Casper would be funny, but Freddy
Krueger would be scary. We'll have a 1st and 2d
place for each category.
TOURING ARIZONA
Information about the program can be found at the
AZ District website www.gwrraaz.org …
(references are also included in newsletter )
You will find a list of 80 places to visit and if you
join the program you get the pin and can earn
hangar bars for visiting at least 10 in each quadrant.
This is fun, informative, and a great way to plan
your rides. Enjoy the program..!

Hi there,
My name is Guy Hatfield, and I'm a newly retired guy

associations. I'm a fairly experienced rider, and would
like to buy an 1800 from a current member who is
looking to upgrade or retire the helmets.
Thank you in advance, and I hope to hear from you
soon!
