Joke of the Month

How did the carpenter break his

teeth?

He chewed on his nails!

It is quite shocking to me to be writing an article for July. 2018 just started, didn't it? As the old saying goes—time flies when you are having fun. We had a good June. We got rid of the love bugs, thank goodness. We had a bug run to Ozello early in the month and it is the first time that no one got any bug splatter on the sticker. Keith was the winner with the closest splatter to the sticker. It was actually a beautiful ride and we were fortunate enough to have Bob and Debbie Lehmann ride with us. We don't get to see them often so it was a treat for us to have them join us. We hadn't been to Linger Lodge in a while and when we arrived we found that they had remodeled and it was nicely updated. They still have a good menu and when you see Ginger, ask her about it. At our Monthly Gathering we were fortunate to have a guest speaker. Deputy D.J. DeSiato, yes the son of Dominick, presented lots of good informa-tion to us and answered any questions we had. Deputy D.J. is an informative and very engaging speaker. We thoroughly enjoyed his presentation and learned a lot as well. Our weekday rides have been well attended. You never know where we will end up but it is usually a good place. It's a nice break in the week to get out and ride. Later this month we will be trying a new place for our Gathering. Bud and Ginger have a friend that owns a restaurant and she has agreed to open for us and see how it works. All the details will be forthcoming. The Annual Caladium Festival will be held in Lake Placid in July and we’ve added it to our calendar. Not only will they have plants but also a car and motorcycle show. Vendors and food round out the day. It will be on the 28th. Think about joining us. It should be fun. On Sunday, the 29th we will be having our annual Picnic/Auction at Tampa Bay Golf. It is always a great time. Get your money counted and be ready for some fun. Welcome to Tracy and Sharon Dunn and Mark and Debbie (Spike) Lussier. Glad to have you with us. Happy 4th of July! We live in the best country ever!

We had 1 TRC, 1 ERC and 1 Medic/First Aid Class. The total count for the year was 136 events with 2,145 attendees. Not a bad year at all. We have some great plans for 2018 so always keep your eyes

on the calendar for all of the fun stuff coming up. In closing thanks to all the

members of Chapter FL1-A for

a great year and remember

No, this article is not about drinking and riding. It's about properly loading your extra gear for long trips. The general rule when loading your bike is light, low, balanced and centered. LIGHT-because the total load of the bike: you, accessories and cargo plus, possibly a passenger, should never exceed the bike's gross vehicle weight rating set by the manufacturer. LOW-because you don't want to substantially raise the bike's center of gravity. Having additional weight high on your bike can impair the bike's respon-siveness to handling your inputs. BALANCED-(side to side) so the load doesn't cause the bike to pull to one side or the other. CENTERED-(front to back) so weight distribution isn't substantially changed, causing one tire to be overloaded (risking potential tire failure) or one tire to be under-loaded (loss of traction or responsiveness). Remember to check your tire pressure and adjust the rear suspension for the extra weight. AERODYNAMICS also need to be considered. Picture the natural wind flow over your bike at highway speeds when it is not loaded with extra gear. Try not to have any objects extending outside of your bike's natural air flow cone. Make sure any items attached to the outside of your bike are attached se-curely. An item coming loose in the middle of a curve can pull you to one side of the road or the other. Substantial bungee cords are good, but expandable web netting is better. Just make sure your fasteners are not near any hot or moving parts of your bike. "GET LOADED" properly and enjoy the trip. Ride safe,

Dominick

Florida Senior District Rider Educator

I came across an excellent historical article pertaining to the history of the Rider Ed Program by my dear friend and mentor, Chuck Reed, our former Region A Educator. This is Part 2 of 3.

History of GWRRA's Rider Education Program - Part 2

A new National Safety Director, Bill Kitchin, took over in January 1987, with plans for an extensive series of videotaped training modules. Kitchin also proposed formation of a non-profit charitable foundation to fund these modules. A series of events delayed these plans, however. The longest lasting legacy Bill Kitchin left for GWRRA Rider Education was separation of the Safe Rider Program from the High Miles Program (still in force today), and the concept of video-taped seminars for use at the chapter level and by individual Members. In July 1987, Robert "Pete" Woodruff began doing motorcycle safety seminars at GWRRA rallies and Wing Ding. By September, Woodruff had been named National Rider Edu-cation Director, a post he held until January 31, 1996. Woodruff, a safety professional with Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company in Marietta, Georgia, swiftly put his professional and organizational skills to work, transforming shoe boxes of "Safe Miles" forms into a computer-ized data base capable of handling what was about to become explosive growth in Rider Edu-cation participation. Taking many of the concepts of his predecessors and putting them into action, he also added whole new programs and involvement opportunities for Members eager to participate. Woodruff released a flood of energy previously unseen on the safety side of the GWRRA organization. In March 1988, GWRRA announced its new Rider Education Program, listing Levels I, II, and III with both Rider and Co-Rider involvement. In addition, the Rider Edu-cation Division instituted on-site MSF-certified Rider Courses at Wing Ding and many GWRRA Region and District rallies. Woodruff also went into the studio to produce his highly entertain-ing and informative series of video-taped seminars on "Co-Rider", "Touring & Braking" and "Trailering." In 1989, the enthusiastic demand of the GWRRA membership for another level of Rider Education was fulfilled with the addition of Level IV-Master Tour Rider, the program's highest level of accomplishment. In late 1995, the GWRRA Rider Education leadership recognized the need for en-hanced Rider training above and beyond that which was then being offered. Plans were insti-tuted for the founding of a completely new organization to be known as the Academy of Rider Training, or ART. In February 1996, Pete Woodruff was named Executive Director of the Acad-emy of Rider Training. He was charged with the responsibility for the planning and the imple-mentation of advanced rider training courses. i.e. Two-up, Trikes, Trailering, Sidecars, Trip and Tour Planning and Group Riding. Those courses, and others, will be released as soon as they are researched and their curriculums developed and instructors trained.
