California News & Views Jim & Pat Moynagh

California District Directors December is a month for contempla-tion. Among the things to contemplate are all the good things that have occurred during the last year. Pat & I find ourselves looking back a few months further. To be specific, we look back to October of 2000 when we became District Directors for California.

During this time, California has had 15 new Chapter Directors, 18 new Assistant Chapter Directors, and 8 new Chapter Educators assume their volunteer leader duties. During this same period of time, we have put 23,000 miles on our Gold Wing and I don’t know how many miles on the car due to bad weather. As the result of these travels, we have had the pleasure of meeting many many new GWRRA friends!

Most Chapters are having Holiday celebrations of one type or an-other. It is our sincere wish that every GWRRA member in California will have a glorious, pleasant, and joyous Holiday Season. Be safe and support your chosen Chapter.

Of all the things that makes GWRRA such a special motorcycle organization, we think the two most important things are Chapter Mem-bership and the knowledge available through the Rider Education Pro-gram. The friendships and camaraderie available in GWRRA Chapters is where members find the truth of the GWRRA Motto:

Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge.

Wishing All Happy Holidays & A Glorious New Year California Wingers are Pure Gold!

Chapter Directors Jim & Kay Zabler

As we start into the last month of the year, Kay and I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday season. Hopefully, we can all spend time with our family and loved ones wher-ever they may be. Last month was packed full with rides, meetings, and lots of fun. We started out with CPR/First Aid class at Larry & Marianne’s home. Thanks again to these two for sharing their home with us. We also held our chapter staff meeting af-

terward, and this is when Kay and I informed everyone that as of the 1st of the year, we would be stepping down as your Chapter Directors. We have discussed this at great length, and in all fairness to everyone in the chapter, it is the best thing we could do at this time. We would like to thank everyone from the bot-tom of our hearts for all their prayers and support you have shown us during this period in our lives. We cannot and will not forget any of you.

Next came our regular chapter meeting, which I understand was a packed house. Hopefully, some of you were able to attend the Horizon program up North. There were 14 of us who went to Tucson for the Arizona District Rally. Everyone bought their share of ‘safety chrome.' Joyce picked up a trophy in the bike show, and Dan Dresser performed in the drill team along with Ari-zona Drill Team. We had a great outdoor bar-b-q dinner the night before we left. After finally finding where it was located (out in the toolies), Ron Tolson lead us to this great restaurant that he remembered from years past .

The following weekend was CA-1B Laughlin Run and a few of our members rode over to that one. Next came CA-1N and the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Ride, and on Sunday it was the San Diego Toy Run out to Ramona. Needless to say, everyone is riding, riding, and riding. Be sure to get your miles to Carole W. by the 1st of the year so she can get everything added and let us know how many miles we rode in 2001 as a chapter.

As we get ready to ride into the new year, I would like to ask those who are not in the Rider Education Program to make a commitment for you and your co-rider to safe riding by joining the REP Level 1 (The Chapter will even pay your fee). I would also ask those of you who are already in the REP to ag-gressively use your influences to see that these riders join us. Believe me folks when I tell you this, “We do not know everything there is to know about our motorcycles and how to ride them safely.” Whether we admit it or not, we know this to be true. Everyday we ride, we continue to learn something new. It is when we stop learning and practicing that we slip into old habits. When was the last time someone asked you to join them with your four wheeler for safe driving practice or an ERC with your four wheeler? Think about it! Eighteen wheelers do it, we do it, practice safe driving. Who is not doing it? Yeah, they are the ones we need to keep our eyes open for. Until next time… ...

Ride hard, ride safe, and enjoy life to its fullest every single day.

Chapter Educators Jim & Carol Waddell

This month I would like to discuss the different opportunities we have to improve our riding skills and reduce our risks. The State of California, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), GWRRA Rider Education Program, and Parking Lot Practices each contribute to the mix. The state supports the MSF, and its Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is our pri-mary training tool for advanced riders. I had ridden for forty years before I took my first ERC, and I learned techniques that I was unsure of. Since then I have taken it four times. I would like to issue a challenge to the people that are taking it for the second or greater time. Now that you know what the drills are, try to do each one perfectly, so that the instructors do not find any flaws. Try to answer all of the written questions correctly. By having this as your goal, I’m sure you will get more out of the course.

GWRRA and the Rider Education Program try to point out the minimum safety actions that all riders should be taking. By advancing through the various levels, you are prompted to take more responsibility for your own safety and the others around you. The REP requirements for ERC, CPR/First Aid, protective clothing, and a first aid kit can benefit eve-ryone. In addition, the Group Riding and Road Captain Seminars add train-ing at the chapter level. All of these programs are just a starting point for your riding experience, and it’s up to you to continue your education. The skills that the ERC can show you will do no good if you don’t practice. The actions are not automatic until you work to make them part of your every day riding techniques. The chapter helps guide you in this effort with our Parking Lot Practices. Once a month for a couple of hours is a small amount time to give up for this worthwhile practice. We also have a large amount of experience in the chapter with people who are willing to share their knowledge to help anyone. The only problem is that YOU have to ask. I am always willing to spend time with anyone discussing anything about riding, and I know others feel the same way. The biggest problem we have is our ego sometimes gets in the way. If we can get past that, then we can attack the real problems. As we approach the New Year, I would like everyone to resolve to become a better rider. Take the courses, talk to others about riding techniques, identify weaknesses in your own skills, and make the ef-fort to improve them. It will make our sport even more enjoyable.

Think Safety, Ride Safely

David & Dori Dirig Chapter Publications

Looking Back - Looking Forward Dori talked me into buying her first motorcy-cle in the spring of ‘95, and she had me hooked on rid-ing by the fall when we bought my first GoldWing. Since we weren’t ‘joiners,’ it took months of email co-ercion from Rick Elmore and Chuck Stinocher before we reluctantly joined GWRRA in ‘96. I can still re-member the Chapter Meetings at Coco’s in Poway where we all crammed into the back room. The chapter has since outgrown four restaurants and is working on a fifth. In that same time period, we have seen the chapter grow and develop, expanding from Poway into San Diego at large. Since the majority of the active chapter was in Poway in ’96, we were one of the few southern

members active at the time. Now the chapter has expanded in force into East and South County, while Dori and I have moved north of Escondido. All things change. If you are lucky, they grow and develop as they change. Such is certainly the case with this chap-ter, for which Dori and I consider ourselves quite fortunate.

“Where is he going with this?” you ask. Those of you who have watched Dori and I grow and develop with this chapter know that I am a stream-of-consciousness writer, but I will eventually attempt to make a point. We owe this chapter a tremendous debt, as it has helped us grow in both our riding and personal lives. Sure, we have filled roles as Chapter Educator, District Educator, and Newsletter Editor. Yes, we initially championed the cause of a Chapter Website and started the Parking Lot Practice pro-gram for this chapter. With Dan Sherwin’s assistance, we were the first chapter in Cali-fornia to have its own domain name (gwrra-ca1f.org), which set the trend for a number of chapter websites. These are each good for a pat on the back and are nice ego boosts, but are not the main things that we remember about our involvement with this chapter.

I remember riding ‘all the way’ to Ramona, so Ron Durham could teach me how to splice and solder correctly as he wired my ‘83 GL1100 with a trailer harness. In that same memory is riding to Santee with a trailer borrowed from Arch & Elaine so Gil Freeman could teach me how to pack the wheel bearings in preparation for our first cross-country trip to Wing Ding ‘98. When I think of Ron helping me with the trailer

hitch, what immediately comes to mind is my then helping Dan Sherwin mount the same hitch on his GL1100 in ‘99 after I upgraded to my current Wing. I remember count-less riders meetings, safety talks, and Parking Lot Practices that always matter and keep us each safe in small ways and big ways. With the riders meetings come innumer-Tsuji-san & Company. Winging in the Land of the Rising Sun.

able dinner rides and weekend rides with all the smiles and laughs and general good times that can never quite be described in print. The GWRRA family goes well be-yond the local chapter and is world-wide! We have had the opportunity to experience this world-wide friendship, meeting Wingers in Japan in ‘97 as well as all across the nation on a 5-week, 24-state, cross-country trip to WingDing ‘98 and beyond!

I recall Bill Mahan and Chuck Riley shepherding us ‘all-the-way’ to Reno in ‘98, and their concern and worry when we <gasp> decided to ride home by ourselves at the end of the weekend (our longest ‘solo flight’ at the time). We’ll never forget Rick, Joyce, and Joy calling in sick and extending a 3-day week-end to four so they could stay with us to get home together after Dori went down on her Valkyrie on Hwy 49 in ’99. The large contingent from CA-1F who then rode with us back to Merced 8 weeks later so that a healed Dori could ride her repaired Valkyrie home will always be remembered, espe-cially blowing out CA-2N’s monthly meeting in Angels Camp on the way home. I remember wondering why I would ever want a CB radio on a motorcycle and wonder-ing later how we ever did without it. We started out wanting to learn how to lead a group ride and were frustrated when the home-built CB radio and PTT switch on our GL1100’s weren’t dependable enough for us to ride as a Back Door. Eventually, we progressed to being the ones teaching others how to group ride safely.

We take group riding so much for granted that we don’t credit the chapter itself, a group of individuals (which is a contradiction in itself) who are constantly growing and in flux. As these new members join, they depend on the experienced members (riders and co-riders) for friendship, assistance, support, and direction so

that they stay active and safe. Thus, they become experienced members in their own right who continue the teaching cy-cle with in-coming members. This phe-nomenon goes well beyond group riding and extends to all facets of Chapter Life and beyond. We have benefited from this experience as new riders and have tried to pass on these lessons and teachings to others that have come into the chapter. Again, you ask, “Where is he going with this?” Some of the names I mentioned above are unknown to a large portion of the chapter, since they have long since stopped riding with us. They still deserve credit for their contributions, just as I hope that others will recognize

(Continued from page 21) mine and Dori’s love for this chapter. We thought it was important to share our feelings with all of you as we look back over the past five years. We do this for two reasons, first to hopefully make each of you stop and take stock of what this chapter means to you. The chap-ter is only as strong and productive as its individ-ual volunteer members. Stop reading for a moment and ask yourself what specifically you are doing to pay the chapter back for the benefits that it provides to you? If there is a way that you can contribute, please find an opportunity to give back to this great chap-ter. The second reason that we’ve written this is to provide a way for you to contribute!

Effective December 2001, Dori and I will resign our staff positions as Chapter Publication Coordinators. What this means is that we need a number of people to step up immediately and volunteer to help this chapter continue to grow. We will need a new Newsletter Editor, a Webmaster, an Email List Administrator, as well as someone to send out the weekly ‘CA-1F Activities’ email. While we have consolidated these posi-tions, there is no need for one person to try and do it all in the future. We are looking for people with an interest in these various tasks, and we are more than happy to provide assistance to those interested. Anyone curious about one or more of these positions should contact Jim, Anita, Mike, Dori, or myself for further information.

Rest assured that Dori and I are not going to disappear out of state, nor have we sold our Hondas in favor of Harleys, a Winnebago, or some other ghastly idea. While I am waxing nostalgic in this article, our interest in the Chapter is not waning nor are we riding off into the sunset. We look forward to future active participation in this chapter and GWRRA at large, and we will still be around to contribute. It is time, how-ever, after five years of continual activity and devotion to this chapter for some new blood to be infused into the Chapter Publications. Will it be you who finds a way to help out and give back to this chapter? How will you contribute to this fantastic group?

Safety tip of the month! Days are shorter, and more commuting is done before sunrise and after dusk.

Motorists may misjudge your approach speed, position, and directional signals as the light fades. Be doubly cautious.
