STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.' "
(Luke 19:8) We are all called to gratefully give back to the Lord in proportion to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn’t called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal sacrifice. No amount is too small or insignificant! Open your heart, how is God calling you to be more generous with your financial resources and possessions?
COLLECTIONS
The collection for last weekend was $5,667. We are grateful for your loyal support.
Policy for Baptism of Children
Call to Celebrate: Baptism, which consists of three group sessions, is required for parents seeking to have their infants/children baptized at North American Martyrs. It is strongly suggested that parents prepare prior to the birth of their child. To register, contact Joan at 508-798-0612 or [email protected]. Sessions are held in January, April, June, and September. The full policy is posted on the bulletin board of the church and on the North American Martyrs website.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry Group will meet on Monday, November 4, in the Kateri’s Kitchen classroom. They meet on the first Monday of each month from 1-2:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. If you or anyone you know is in need of a Prayer Shawl, please call Angela Rothera at 774-633-0692.
Prayer
How about making a Cursillo weekend?
Cursillo or "short course in Christianity" is an uplifting and educational experience. Cursillo was brought from Spain to the United States in 1962. The weekend is facilitated by a team of laypeople and clergy who deliver organized talks and discussions. What the presenters add to the talks is the witness of their own lives, their struggles and triumphs in Christ. The weekend is full of laughter, prayer, great music, wonderful meals and so much more. Our upcoming dates are: Women’s - November 14-17, 2019 and May 28-31, 2020; Men’s - February 6-9, 2020 and September 10-13, 2020. All weekends will be held at the Immaculate Conception Spiritual Renewal Center in Putnam, CT. For additional information, please contact Pam Hamilton at 774.239.8909 or [email protected] OR Joan Laracy at 774-239-2474 or [email protected].
Divorced/Separated Support Ministry
Are you a divorced or separated Catholic who needs to share with others what you are going through? Meetings are held right here at North American Martyrs on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 7 -9 p.m. in the Sacristy classroom in the church. Our next meeting date is November 25 (No meeting on Veterans Day, Nov. 11). For more information, contact Karen Lennox at 508-373-2067.
31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Today salvation has come to this house. (Luke 19:9)
T oday’s Gospel paints a vivid picture of Zacchaeus the tax collector—wealthy, despised,
and also very short—trying unsuccessfully to see through a crowd. He climbs a tree just to get a look at Jesus. It must have been an astonishing and amusing sight to see such a prominent person doing something so silly. You can just imagine the grin on Jesus’ face as he looks up and sees Zacchaeus’ irrepressible, childlike enthusiasm. Then that enthusiasm turns to joy when Jesus invites himself to Zacchaeus’ house. Inspired by Jesus’ warm words of acceptance, Zacchaeus promises to give half of his wealth to the poor and more than repay the people he has extorted.
So did Zacchaeus follow up on this bold promise? We’ll never know since he is not mentioned again.
After Jesus moved on, the hard work would have begun for Zacchaeus. If he gave away his money, he would have to learn how to live with less. He would have to fight the temptation to return to his dishonest methods of collecting taxes. He would have to earn the trust and friendship of his fellow townsfolk. Surely all of this was less fun than that initial life-altering encounter with Jesus. He may have had trouble maintaining his enthusiasm.
It’s okay to not always feel excited about life as a follower of Jesus. Our faith journey can be like a long, successful marriage that starts out with the magic and passion of an early romance and develops into something calmer but deeper and more meaningful. There’s no getting around the fact that our relationship with Jesus requires hard work sometimes. But it’s good to know that he is always with us, ready to give us the grace we need.
Our attempts to follow Jesus don’t have to be big, splashy gestures like Zacchaeus’ initial response. Change will be gradual, and there will be setbacks, but with Jesus’ help, our efforts will bear fruit.
