I am thrilled to be back at the start of another exciting year with the Greater Cleve-land Alumnae Chapter. Having just returned from International Convention, I am taking this year’s theme of “Full Circle” to heart. Looking at the past year in review, it is amazing how much we have accomplished:

We celebrated Norma Dolezal’s 100th Birthday! We raised $175 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. We assembled and donated 40 bags of supplies to the Edna House for Women. We won the Helen Mae Clarahan Spiese Alumnae Panhellenic Award at Inter-

national Convention for outstanding support of our local Panhellenic Asso-ciation, and the members of our chapter who have volunteered their time with the Cleveland Alumnae Panhellenic Association and the Cleveland Alumnae Panhellenic Endowment Fund.

We supported a chapter that was awarded the Annulet, the top honor for a collegiate chapter.

We achieved the status of “Impacting the World” through the new Alumnae Chapter/Club recognition program.

There are too many wonderful events from the past year to list here, yet we have so much to look forward to in the coming months. As Alpha Iota’s school year kicks off, we will join the women for mock recruitment, as well as Lighting of the Tapers ceremony. We hope to see many alumnae at this very special event! Our calendar is filled with many great events this year such as a night at the Hard Rock Casino, volunteering at the Greater Cleveland Foodbank, and our favorite annual events such as the Valentine’s Day Tea and International Reunion Day. Looking further into the future, we have a big celebration on the horizon – Alpha Iota’s 75th anni-versary in fall 2015! Lastly, I want to mention another event occurring in the next couple of years – the colonization of a new chapter at Case Western Reserve University! I am very excited that we will have another chapter joining us in Cleveland. Northeast Ohio is becoming an Alpha Gam hub! I look forward to seeing many of you soon as we continue to live with purpose! Loyally, Jaime

Philanthropy Report

We are excited to partner with Alpha Iota to volunteer at the 2014 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. This year's walk will be held on September 28, 2014 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. In years past, we have helped with checking in walkers, distributing programs and working in the food tent. The JDRF Walk is an impactful way to raise money for critically needed type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and show your support for the millions of people affected by this serious disease. We are happy to support JDRF at such an im-portant event as well as have fun getting to know the members of Alpha Iota while we volunteer. Keep an eye on the GCAC Facebook page for more details.

We are also looking into and planning some additional philanthropy events including our Annual Shoebox Ministry project and volunteering at the Cleveland Food Bank. If there are other philanthropy projects you would like to suggest, please email me at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support and participation in our upcoming philanthropy events.

Come Home to As our fraternity celebrated 110

years of sisterhood, the theme

“Come Home to Alpha Gamma Del-

ta” inspired alumnae to share their

undergraduate experiences with

the 54 collegians in attendance at

the 2014 International Reunion Day

at Carrie Cerino’s. Alumnae from

and brought

composites, scrapbooks, and pho-

tos for Alpha Iota to peruse.

The highlight of the program were

stories the Alumnae recounted of 4

decades of . Sheri Kellner told

stories of an earlier time at Baldwin

Wallace. Kina Kerst described liv-

ing in the Alpha Lambda house with

56 women where a sit-down dinner

was served nightly by a house staff.

Pat Magee talked of starting at Kent

State 3 months following the May

1970 shootings when Greek Life

was viewed as too conforming. A

decade’s old mystery was solved

when Pam Calvey learned why Al-

pha Delta’s composite was stolen

by Ohio State fraternity brothers (it

was an act of love). Jaime Winer

explained how Zeta Iota’s member-

ship was doubled with just one re-

cruitment.

Chapter scholarship and activity

awards culminated the IRD. A pearl

was awarded to Diana Slawski for

being the senior with the highest

cumulative grade point average.

Chapter House Fire Inspires New ΑΓΔ Foundation Fund

In January, IHQ received one of the most frightening Fraternity calls it can ever receive. “There’s

been a fire at the Upsilon (University of Oklahoma) Chapter house.” The thankful news everyone

was safe. The hard news – the chapter house is uninhabitable. This disaster affected the entire

chapter but specifically the 61 women left scrambling for a new place to sleep and ways to get the

basic necessities we so easily take for granted: food, clothing, toothbrushes, supplies and books.

History repeated itself at Alpha Beta (University of Michigan) in an early morning in March when a

fire broke out on the third floor. Again all the sisters were safe. By noon, members from IHQ were

in Ann Arbor, and by day’s end, all 60 in-house girls had living arrangements at local hotels,

transportation to shuttle them to and from campus, and meal plans with the university. While all

members were able to return to the house within one week, many had to replace all of their items.

In response, the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation established a Disaster Relief Fund to help provide

immediate emergency support to sisters facing a disaster. The sisters of Upsilon and Alpha Beta

were the first to benefit from this fund, each receiving $500 to meet extraordinary needs caused by

the fire. With the help of our alumnae, funds will be available for sisters in the future who

experience loss from disasters. For questions or to make a donation to the new fund please contact

[email protected].

What could be more fun that shopping,

socializing and dining with your friends?

GCAC combined all three into one November

evening by hosting “Shop for a Cause” at

Around the Corner in Lakewood. Members

and their guests purchased holiday items

from 10 vendors with proceeds benefiting

the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

The Edna House Philanthropy

GCAC continued its annual support of Edna House

through Shoebox Ministry. The philanthropy event

was held during our annual Valentine Tea to include

collegian participation.

Over 70 women enjoyed a beautiful Tea Buffet as Bri

Carter was presented with the Sweetheart Award.

After lunch, the creative talents of Alpha Iota came

out as they designed Valentine cards for the 45

women of Edna House and joined the alumnae filling

the Ministry bags with fleece throws, gloves, scarves

and toiletries for the residents. Sweetheart, Bri Carter with Taylor Fuge and Mimi Ganzfried

Norma’s Dolezal celebrates a Milestone Birthday

Norma Dolezal graduated from BW in 1934 with a Major in Latin, Minor in Biology, and by special arrangement - a

Certificate in Library Science from Western Reserve University that was equivalent to the WRU Masters of Library Sci-

ence. While at BW, she was a member of Alpha Kappa Sigma, one of the oldest literary societies in the US, founded

during the Civil War. In November, 1940, was colonized by and has been a vital part of her life ever

since. As testament to her work with she wears the Arc with Pearls and Diamonds.

In December, 2013, we celebrated the Centennial of Norma’s birth, and 82 years of involvement with and .

A two hour open house was held at the party room of Nina Williams in Rocky River. Alpha Gamma Delta themed

birthday cake, cupcakes and crudités were served with punch and tea. She was overwhelmed that over 100 people

arrived – and CAPA sisters, and BWU and College Club friends from all over NE OH. Her Medina family attended

in full force. It was announced that the Norma M. Dolezal ‘34 Scholarship Fund had been established, in celebration

of her birthday, and to honor her commitment to young people, her beloved Greek affiliation to the value of

critical thinking and a lifetime of caring for others. In the days and weeks after the party, she continued to celebrate

her birthday with visits from the BWU President (Norma has known 8 out of the 11 BW presidents), and many good

friends. Her house was filled with cards and flowers, commendations and citations. Norma has tried to personally

write and thank everyone who attended or sent her gifts, but knows she missed some. So to those who did not hear

Treasurer’s Report

Thank you to everyone for supporting the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter during the 2013-2014 year. I would like to thank the 14 members listed for your continued support of the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter. Our goal is to continually grow our membership each year. Luckily we did not lose any members but we also did not increase our membership. If you are considering supporting our chapter next year, your $20 annual dues helps to support Alpha Iota Collegiate chapter awards given to outstanding sisters and students, the Gold Dust newsletter, International Convention participation and general expenses needed to run the alumnae chapter. I realize we all become very busy trying to balance our families/friends, careers, and just the normal day-to-day activities. I hope you can find some time to dedicate to AGD in the coming year as well. The time commitment is minimal and we enjoy seeing some new faces and catching up with old friends at the monthly meetings or events. I think we have some great things planned to meet the interests of everyone. If you would like to send in your $20 support fee for the 2014-2015 year, please make out your check to Alpha Gamma Delta and send to my address on the form enclosed. Thank you all again and I hope you have a wonderful summer.

Alpha Iota Awarded Top Honors at Convention

The past year has been packed full of new experiences and exciting events for our chapter. Our newly elected Executive Council members were eager to take on their new positions and help lead Alpha Iota chapter. From winning prestigious awards at international convention to preparing for recruitment this upcoming fall, our chapter has had a great year and is eager to see what the future holds. Our commitment to living with purpose was quite evident at the 2014 International Alpha Gamma Delta Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our membership development adviser, Jaime Winer, VPR, Mary McHale, and I attended on July 9-12. The convention hosted award and initiation ceremonies, informa-tional sessions and motivational speakers. The three of us agree (and we think you would too) that the most exciting part of convention was the awards ceremony. Alpha Iota was recognized for excellence in all areas of the fraternity by receiving the 2012-2014 Annulet Award. We are honored to have earned such a prestigious award from our International Fraternity. We hope to continue our chapter excellence into the next biennium. The sisters of Alpha Iota are looking forward to the fall se-mester. Our executive council is meeting in August for an Executive Council retreat to receive leadership training and do big picture planning for the upcoming semester. Once school starts on August 25, recruitment will be just three weeks away, September 17-20. Our recruitment team is working diligently to improve our recruitment nights and chapter preparation. We look forward to welcoming smart, talented and motivated women into our sisterhood. This semester, we will continue to strive to better our chapter through all facets of the fraternity. Outgoing Chapter Advisor Recaps a Successful Year

The 2013 - 2014 school year was an exciting and eventful year for the women of Alpha Iota. They kicked off the year with Formal Recruitment and welcomed 25 women focused on scholarship, phi-lanthropy and sisterhood into the Chapter taking Chapter total to 70 wonderful women. We volun-teered with members of the GCAC at the JDRF walk and also raised over $700 at the annual Mr. BW Pageant for the AGD Foundation. Spring semester brought more activities - COR, Greek Awards and April Reign. The year was packed with social activities, fun and of course a focus on scholarship. All of the hard work paid off when the women were awarded the prestigious Annulet at Convention in July.

As Chapter Advisor, I could not be more proud of the hard work, dedication and sisterhood that was demonstrated by the sisters of Alpha Iota Chap-ter. While this was my last year as Chapter Advisor, I will continue to stay involved and am excited to turn the Chapter Advisor role over to Mary Col-leen Witherspoon. I have fond memories of my years as Chapter Advisor and of all of the fabulous women I worked with over the years. I also want to thank the great group of advisors that have unselfishly given hours and hours of their time to support Alpha Iota. I appreciate everything you have done and you have all made a huge impact on the Chapter. Best wishes to Alpha Iota for many more years of success.

Loyally in Epsilon Pi, Michelle

GCAC would like to thank Michelle for all of her hard work and dedication to Alpha Iota. Without her guidance the chapter

couldn’t have achieved all their goals. Michelle certainly holds the values of Alpha Gamma Delta close to her heart.

Welcome Mary Colleen Witherspoon, Alpha Iota’s new Chapter Advisor. Mary is a native of the Cleveland area, graduating from Olmsted Falls High School and Miami University and is a Senior Ana-lyst at New York Life Insurance Company. Mary returned to the area after college and thinks the best part about Cleveland is the people, by far. She also loves the diversity, our food, theatres and muse-ums. Mary also feels that most Clevelanders are hardworking people who like to have fun.

Mary’s favorite Alpha Gam memory was initiation. “Finally being initiated into the Fraternity and learning about all the history and symbolism of everything was such an amazing feeling that I still can't even describe. I love our ritual.” Mary ‘s favorite Alpha Gam item is her badge. “I think it's beautiful, and I was so excited to finally receive it and be able to wear it. I love the symbolism of it. It's the only piece of yellow gold jewelry that I own and wear.”

We asked Mary to answer a few questions to get to know her better….

Growing up, what was your dream job? I wanted to be a veterinarian...then I realized that I'm pretty bad at science and math! What is one thing that nobody knows about you? I have a completely irrational fear of frogs and toads. For some unknown reason, they terrify me! What was your most unique vacation? When I was 17, I went to Sweden with the United States Na-val Sea Cadet Corps as one of three American delegates. I spent 17 days there with people from Cana-da, England, Russia, Australia, India, and the Netherlands. It was awesome to meet so many people from around the world and learn about different countries and cultures while in another country! Last book you’ve read? I re-read Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. What is your guilty pleasure? HOCKEY! I am a diehard hockey fan. I buy the NHL Network cable package every year and rarely miss watching a game! Favorite movie? Gone With the Wind.

What is the coolest thing that you collect? Dreams! Tell us one thing that would surprise people. I wanted to join the Navy from the time I was 14. Years and years of com-petitive horseback riding left little to no cartilage in my knees, and I actually broke my back in a fall and it never healed right. Between my knees and my back, I couldn't meet the physical requirements to join.

If you could spend one day with any one person who would it be? Oooh, tough one! I'd have to say the Dalai Lama. He fascinates me, and I'd love to learn more about his religion and culture and get some life advice from him!

Coming Full Circle at AGD’s 48th International Convention

The Awards Luncheon was very exciting! Our Alumnae Chapter was awarded the Helen Mae Clarahan

Spiese Alumnae Panhellenic Award and Alpha Iota received a Financial Management Honor Roll Award

and the Annulet for chapters with 51-69 members. The Annulet is the most prestigious award given to

a collegiate chapter and gets its name from the significance of the annulets on the Fraternity Armorial

Bearings. The award is presented to a collegiate chapter that has evidenced outstanding excellence in

all areas of Fraternity Life. The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Erin Foley who spoke on “Empowering Sister-

hood”, who spoke about how to live a strong life.

Friday evening sisters attended the Indianapolis Indians vs. Columbus Clippers baseball game. Sarah

Horn, convention soloist, sang the national anthem. Many know Sarah from her YouTube video where

she sang “For Good” with Kristin Chenoweth at the Hollywood Bowl.

The Saturday morning Philanthropy Walk had 350 sisters enjoying a walk through beautiful White River

State Park. Over $12,000 was raised for the Foundation! $5,000 of the total raised was awarded to the

American Diabetes Association – Indiana Area to support Camp John Warvel for children learning to

A banner year for CAPA’s 100th anniversary celebration

What could be more fun than the CAPA (Cleveland Alumnae Panhellenic Association) Centennial Celebration that was held May 17, 2014. The 100th anniversary / Scholarship Luncheon drew nearly 300 attendees to The Silver Grille in the Higbee Building in Cleveland.

CAPA President, Nancy Toth, of Chi Omega Fraternity, kicked off the festivities by announcing a flag parade of all 26 flags of the National Panhellenic Council (NPC). Alpha Gamma Delta’s red, buff and green flag was proudly marched with the others by Sheri Kellner, AGD Province Director. Keynote speaker Jean Mrasek, Chairman of NPC, and former National President of Chi Omega Fraternity, inspired the attendees with highlights of national and local success stories.

Kina Kerst, Province Director, AGD, and fund administrator of the Cleveland Alumnae Panhellenic Endowment Fund (CAPEF) gave a progress report on raising money for scholarships. Annual Basket Sales were supplemented with other CAPA fund raising events such as Max & Erma’s Dine Out and garden center gift card sales.

The 10 scholarship recipients include the following individuals:

Each scholarship recipient was introduced, receiving recognition and a certificate. Congratulations to all and stay tuned for CAPA’s 2015 scholarship event and its 101st anniversary year.
