Health and Welfareby George Gey, MD, and Jeanette Dunn, EdD, RN

New Dietary GuidelinesThe Department of Health and Human Services have released

the new 2015 to 2020 dietary guidelines. You can find them at www.Health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2015.

Many of you were part of the Northwest Lipid Center dietary alternative study at the University of Washington. The results showed that reduction in saturated fat and total fat consumption significantly lowered serum cholesterol over one year.

It is estimated that nearly a third of Americans should be treated for high cholesterol. Arterial disease starts as a fatty streak in the vessel wall in childhood. By the time one reaches age 50, signs and symptoms of the disease appear. Sudden cardiac death may occur without warning.

Risk factors, such as genetic inheritance, hypertension, obe-sity, diabetes, smoking, pollution, lack of exercise, poor diet, and stress of modern life accelerate the disease process. Prevention has to be over a lifespan. Lifestyle changes will significantly alter the disease process and improve quality of life.

Follow a healthy eating pattern within an appropriate calorie level: Over age 50, 1600 calories for women and 2000 for men. Consume less than 10 percent of calories per day from added sug-ars; less than 10 percent of calories per day from saturated fats; and less than 2,300 milligrams (1 tsp.) per day of sodium. If alcohol is consumed, it should be in moderation—up to one drink per day for women or up to two per day for men.

Weigh yourself weekly. Keep your BMI (body mass index) between 27.5 and 15. Exercise regularly—at least 100 minutes per week. Stretching and resistance exercises help keep your joints and muscles in good condition.

Behavior changes are tough and have to be done slowly and carefully. Participation with friends and relatives helps to main-tain regular lifestyle changes. Having trouble? Seek a professional trainer’s help.v
