The Internet and the World Wide Web (the Web) are not the same thing. The Web lets you access the Internet’s:

The huge collection of information, services, and Web sites accessible through the Internet.

A specific location on the Web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group, or organization.

What Is a Web Site? Every Web site has a unique address, or uniform resource locator (URL), that includes a three-letter extension that identifies the type of site.

The Internet is a gigantic computer network (hardware) that connects computers around the world. The World Wide Web is an electronic system (software) used to navigate the huge collection of information, services, and Web sites accessible through the Internet. Web sites are specific locations on the Internet.

You need four things to connect to the Internet: Computer Internet service provider (ISP) Modem Communications software (Web browser or e-mail)

A company that provides access to the Internet, usually for a monthly fee. Their responsibilities include maintaining equipment, providing customer service, and protecting the network.

What is a Modem?To connect your computer to the Internet, you need a modem to send and receive data.

A Modem can be internal or external

For home users, the most common types of modems are:

Telephone (dial-up) DSL (digital subscriber line) Cable

Modem-A modem is a piece of equipment that lets your computer talk to other computers using telephone lines, cable lines, fiber optic wires, or even wireless connections.

The word modem comes from a combination of the words:MOdulator and DEModulator

What Is a Web Browser?

To surf the Web, you need a Web browser. Popular Web browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox.

What is a Search Engine?Search engines are the primary method Internet surfers use to locate information on the Web

Many of the major search engines are created through an automated process in which a program called a spider "crawls" across the Web to gather information about existing sites. The spider captures this basic information and organizes its findings into categorizes, which are then used to generate search results for users.

1971: Email (electronic mail) is invented by Ray Tomlinson

1985: On March 15, Symbolics.com is given the first registered domain name.

1988: first computer virus, a worm attacks and shuts down 10% of all internet hosts.

1991: World Wide Web is created by Tim Berners-Lee

1994: Pizza Hut takes the first online pizza order for a mushroom and pepperoni pizza with extra cheese.

1995: AOL (America Online), Prodigy, and CompuServe offer dial up service to the internet for home use.
