Going into the Desert…

During Lent we go with Jesus into the desert to fast and pray. Our desert is most likely not a geographical location but a spiritual reality. It is a place of silence where we battle the noise in our heads and the constant clamoring of our selfishness. The desert is a place of encounter. It is where God led the chosen people into freedom from slavery, where the Spirit led the Son of God to prepare for his saving mission, and where we go to hear God’s voice in our hearts. To enter this desert during Lent we will need to take time, choose silence, and make a place for prayer. Choosing silence can be difficult in our noisy world, but silence can be healing, opening us up to the presence of God in our lives. Try turning off the TV after a certain hour or one whole night each week. Turn off the radio on your way to work. Have one meal a week in silence. Making a place for prayer in our home can help us do what the Gospel tells, us to go into an “inner room” to pray (Matthew 6:6). Make your prayer place as quiet, un-cluttered, and “desert-like” as possible. It can be the cor-ner of a room or any unused space. Corpus Christi Foundation Update Congratulations Graduates!

We are very pleased to inform our community that our efforts and sacrifices that we all have done to support the students from the Corpus Christi Foundation Mission including the bakers, soup makers, Angel Tree donors, sponsors and OLG students has shown fruit. We have several students that grad-uated from Universities and Technical Schools that without our support would never had an oppor-tunity to have a degree or training to better their lives and the lives of their loved ones. The majority of these students come from families with very little resources, living in very poor conditions. To be able to go to school and graduate from college or technical school is a dream that many would never be able to accomplish without your help. Thanks to all of you who have taken the time and effort to help out the less fortunate. The following students have graduated from Technical School: Jimmy Orlando Asturias Martinez Industrial Electrician (graduated with high honor) Alfredo Cesar Bustos Rocha Industrial Electrician Enmanuel Jose Mendieta Gomez Industrial Electrician Maynord Javier Gonzales Diaz Construction Marlene Elizabeth Morales Construction Rebeca Julisso Espinoza Rivera Laboratory Technician Arnold Eduardo Sanchez Auto mechanic Felix Antonio Orozco Altamirano Computer Engineer The following students graduated from the University: Xiomara del Carmen Castillo Law Auxiliadora del Carmen Rodriguez Tourism Jaime Ramon Lopez Montiel Accounting Ulises Fernando Alvarez Pasos Law Maria Jose Montaya Lopez Law On behalf of Fr. Sergio Hernandez Ochomogo and the Corpus Christi Foundation, we like to thank you for your generosity of time, resources and prayers that allow this miracle of love to take place. Fr. Sergio hopes to be able to thank you personally in the near future. He celebrates a Mass once a month for OLG parish-ioners and students. Lets keep the new graduates in our pray-ers as they start their new life full of hope with the spirit of ser-vice as Fr. Sergio has guided them to do. As we are about to start the Lenten sea-son, I pray that we con-tinue to grow in God's love and faith at all times knowing that we are in His care. God bless you all and thank you again. Many Hands Make Light Work! Christmas at Our Lady of Grace offered all of us beautiful liturgies and wonderful music in a magnificent space; 2011 was no different. Enhancing our celebrations were the gorgeous poinsettias, wreaths, Christmas tree and our Nativity, placed in an immaculate space thanks to the good stewards who came to help clean. Each Advent, in preparation for these celebrations, volunteers join together with the Altar and Flower Committees to clean and decorate our church. It took several dates—Saturday, December 17, Monday, December 19 and Saturday, December 24—and 85 parishioners to

sweep, vacuum, scrub, mop, and polish the floors, pews, and furniture, and to clean the sanctuary, sacristy, choir loft, entrances, devotional and congregational areas, making our church worthy of this celebration. Grateful thanks to Louise, Barbara, Ben, Leslie, Betty, Lee, Margaret, Carlotta, Emily, Angelo, Annabel, Josie, Daniel (2 of you), Cecilia, Lucy, Angela, Ann (two of you), Jane, Mickey, Katharine, Anna, Kay, Chris, Jarrod, Kathy, Shannon, Mary Jane, Bob, Rolfe, John, Andrea, Liz, Gerardo, Will, Ken, Cason, Lea, Jennifer, Gabrielle, Haley, Bonnie, Melissa, Elijah, Adrian, Rich, Mr.

Rommel and the OLG 7th grade students. Thank you! You did a magnificent job! If you weren’t able to help with the Christmas cleanings we have two opportunities coming soon. On Saturday, March 31 and again on Saturday, April 7, we will gather between 9:30am and 12:30pm to clean and decorate for Palm Sunday, and our Holy Week and

Easter liturgies. The decorations, including palm trees, Easter lilies, and Peace lilies, promise to be just as beautiful as our Christmas celebrations. No special talents are needed, just a love of our church and a willingness to serve your parish. Come for an hour, an entire morning or both mornings. It’s a great way to prepare for Easter and to meet other parishioners. The Saturday cleanings are open to everyone. Young people, this is a great way to help the parish and also earn your service hours. If you can help, please bring cleaning cloths, gloves (if you use them) and a broom or mop. We have plenty of buckets and cleaning supplies. For more info or if you have questions, please call Patty Jennings at 282-6847.

The OLG 7th grade students (two classes) helped prepare the church for Christmas by scrubbing the pews and all the wooden doors of the church. They also scraped gum from under the pews! Gum is still a problem and we beg you to dispose of it properly before entering this holy space!

March for Life in Raleigh Standing up for life

Over 20 parishioners of Our Lady of Grace gathered at the North Raleigh Hilton on January 14 of this year for the 13th Annual Prayer Breakfast for Life, sponsored by NC Right to Life. Bishop Burbidge of Raleigh and Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes gave inspirational introductions at the beginning, with the bishop announcing a youth rally to follow, attended 500-600 youth supporting life. Albert Hodges of Room at Inn, a Greensboro native, won an award as a Platinum sponsor of NC Right to Life. There was also recognition of numerous state senators and congresspersons who attended. Rep. Skip Stam, a frequent attendee at the event, won an award for promoting and helping pass the Woman's Right to Know (Pro-Life) Bill over the veto of Governor Bev Perdue. The main speaker was Dr. Randall K O'Bannon: the Director of Research and Education for National Right to Life. He spoke extensively about Planned Parenthood and its falsification and manipulation of statistics to appear that abortion was not it's main focus. He effectively showed that, in fact, PP brought in $1 billion in revenues, with abortion being 91% of their actual income, despite their claims. After the speech, the crowd left to go to Nash Square for the Rally and March. The main speakers were Carol Tobias, National Director of the Right to Life Committee; Christina Geradts, student pro-life leader at UNC-Chapel Hill; and Teresa Pincus, student pro-life leader at NCSU. The large crowd, including a big contingent of youth, marched around the state capitol and other landmarks, witnessing to the sanctity of life. The march ended with hot chocolate, coffee, and sweets under the tent at a local Catholic Church, with the bishop greeting everyone personally. It was a beautiful day to stand up for life!

First Annual OLG School Family Heritage Night a Success! On the evening of February 2, OLG School was buzzing with activity as the school community celebrated our first ever Family Heritage Night! Over 300 members of our school community attended the event and were treated to a delicious spaghetti meal. The cafeteria, halls and gym were decorated with middle school student artwork that was based on Mexican and Polish folk-art traditions. The middle school art project was funded by a grant from the United Arts Council (UAC). OLG School was the only private school to receive a UAC grant this year. School families brought in desserts to share that represented their country of origin and the dessert tables were overflowing with over 30 different desserts from Egypt, Ireland, Greece, Mexico. Poland, Germany, England and more. We even had a Cherokee Blueberry Cake. It was wonderful to see how diverse our school community is! Thank you to our staff, teachers and PTO who spent many long hours decorating, cooking and serving dinner. Thank you so much to our sponsors as well: the United Arts Council, El Buen Gusto Bakery, Euro Deli Mart, Cici's Pizza and Great Harvest Bread Company. The Mission Effectiveness Committee of the Our Lady of Grace School Board invites

the entire OLG Community to join them in praying each month for teachers and staff. These wonderful servants are helping in the formation of the children of our parish and would so appreciate our prayers and support. During the month of March, please ask God to bless and sustain:

Mrs. McMullen, Mrs. Merendino, Mrs. Bio, Mrs. Markowski, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Bradford

The Faculty and Staff of Our Lady of Grace School are completing the circle of prayer by devoting prayers each month to specific families of our school community to uplift and support them. During the month of March, we are praying to God for grace, solid support, growth in truth and love, and fruitfulness for the following families:

Nettles, Nixon, Noh, Novak, Ognovich, Omohundro, Pappas, Parr, Patrick, Perez, Petrangeli, Pevida, Luther/Phillips, Pincus, Quagliano, Quinn, Ramsey, Reddick,
