Going Deeper Sunday 23rd August

2. When darkness seems to hide His face I rest on His unchanging grace In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil

3. When he shall come with trumpet sound Oh may I then in Him be found Dressed in His righteousness alone Faultless stand before the throne

3. Lord, all sovereign, granting peace from Heaven, Let me comfort those who suffer with the comfort you have given. I will tell of your great love for as long as I live, Singing, ‘What a faithful God have I’.

3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death and Hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises I will ever give to thee.

SASB 27 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; Hold me with thy powerful hand. Bread of Heaven, Feed me now and evermore. 2. Open thou the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream shall flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, Be thou still my strength and shield.

1. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly trust in Jesus' name Christ alone, Cornerstone Weak made strong in the Saviour's love Through the storm He is Lord, Lord of all

SAB 378 Lord, I come before your throne of grace; I find rest in your presence and fullness of joy. In worship and wonder I behold your face, Singing, ‘What a faithful God have I’. What a faithful God have I, What a faithful God. What a faithful God have I, Faithful in every way. 2. Lord of mercy, you have heard my cry; Through the storm you’re the beacon, my song in the night. In the shelter of your wings, hear my heart’s reply, Singing, ‘What a faithful God have I’.

READ: Psalm 91

As we read scripture, I encourage you to ponder on these two questions:

What is God saying to you through this text? What do you need to do about it?

QUESTIONS:

- Have you ever physically had to seek refuge? From danger? From storms? From a hurtful relationship? What was this experience like? - In what ways do you feel God has protected you in your life? - Have there been times in your life where you have felt battered by life and its circumstances? What did it/would it mean for you to take refuge in God? - How difficult do you find it do come to terms with the fact that God lets some calamites or circumstances happen to the world or to you? - Re-read the Psalm. Which image of protection do you find most helpful?

PRAYER:

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High, those who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD: "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."

Those who call for help in times of trouble, those who seek strength to make it through another day will say to the LORD: "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."

Those who wrestle to remain calm and compassionate as the world rages, those who need courage to stand up for truth, will say to the LORD: "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

Those who require fresh purpose when the well has run dry, those who seek solace from the fast lanes of life, will say to the LORD: "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

Those who dig deep to keep changing the situation, those who need shelter when another storm rages, will say to the LORD: "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."

Safe in the shadow of the Lord, Possessed by love divine, I trust in him, I trust in him, And meet his love with mine.

PONDER:

Selected verses from SASB 890 (Timothy Dudley-Smith):

Safe in the shadow of the Lord, Beneath his hand and power, I trust in him, My fortress and my tower.

LISTEN AND LOOK:

This songster piece by Stuart Watson places a beautiful melody to Psalm 91. Listen and ponder on these words as you listen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwF-fpub-T0

What strikes you about this piece of art? Pause and allow God to speak to you.

GIVE IT A GO:

This week try and find space and time to take refuge in God from all that is going on in the world and in your life. Here are a few things you could try: - Sit on a park bench and watch the birds. Ponder what it means for God to cover you in his wings? - Sit in your favourite place in your home and spend some moments in quiet. Bring to mind some of the words used in Psalm 91 – God is our refuge, fortress, he will shelter you, he will cover you in his wings. - Some people find it easier to reflect while doing something. Attached is a colouring version of selected words from Psalm 91. As you colour, reflect on the truths of these words.

As you go from here, remember this: Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He will shield you with his wings, He will shelter you with his feathers. His faithful promises are your armor and protections. So go out with peace and joy, to love and serve God.
