Dogs Rule, Nonchalantly is a collection of twenty years worth of whimsical dog paintings complemented by hand-written observations of dog behavior and first person experiences garnered over a lifetime of being a “dog person”.

“There is nothing happier than a happy dog” reads one of the observations in this humorous and heartwarming look at the everyday interactions between man and man’s best friend. Renown artist and illustrator Mark Ulriksen combines his handwritten observations with his intricate paintings of dogs from over 20 years of his career. Mark reaches back to his youth to talk about his first dog and chronicles the idiosyncrasies of each of the ten dogs that have enriched his life. Mark parallels major life events from dating, married life, and raising a family, with such humorous moments as house-breaking a puppy, obedience classes, the sad melancholy of nursing an aging canine friend, Ted, and his eventual ascension to “dog heaven.”

Dogs Rule, Nonchalantly will appeal to dog lovers of all ages. The intuitive, colorful paintings communicate a depth of understanding of the quips and quirks of our canine companions that will bring a smile to the faces of children, while the sophistication and nuance of Mark’s artistic expertise and his acute observations will resonate with anyone who has ever had a dog. In addition, having contributed more than forty covers to The New Yorker magazine, this collection will also appeal to art lovers and followers of his work.

Future American President is a visual journey of the American dream seen through the eyes of our least cynical and most helpful citizens, our children.

Conceived and brought to life by renowned photographer Matthew Jordan Smith, it is a reminder that every child has the right to aspire to greatness and ultimately achieve it. 50 states, 100 families and countless dreams: this book celebrates the best of the American spirit while inspiring countless children to dream big and never give up. With some incredible help from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, families in every state were beautifully photographed by Matthew Jordan Smith and asked what they would do if they were President. Sometimes funny, always thought provoking, their answers point to a future national attitude of hope, compassion, and understanding in an otherwise jaded world.

With a foreword from Disney star, Zendaya Coleman, and a personal note from President Jimmy Carter, Future American President features children from all 50 of the United States, from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and from all walks of life. This book encourages and inspires today’s youth to always live their lives knowing that their highest aspirations are possible and that every great American leader and innovator was once also a Future President.

Light Falls Like BitsThe Photography of Trey Ratcliff

tr ey r atc li f f

Light Falls Like Bits: The Photography of Trey Ratcliff critically considers the work and the enterprise of world-renowned photographer Trey Ratcliff in art historical and theoretical contexts, in an attempt to contribute to the discourse on the evolution of photography in the 21st century.

Trey Ratcliff works in HDR (High-dynamic-range) photography and is one of the leading practitioners in the world. Armed with a camera and a tripod, he traipses across countries and ventures into some of its least populated corners. Harnessing an impeccable grasp on the aesthetic with an unmatched mastery of the technical, he converts into pixels a spectacular anthology of natural as well as manmade landscapes gleaned from different parts of the planet. Every joule of effort exerted between the click of the shutter to the click of the mouse is funneled into the crafting of images that offer a palpable yet timeless impression of the world around us.

Within the four edges of the frame, he sets out to build a perceptual theater – mystery occasionally interrupts clarity, brightness is always balanced by darkness, sharp details intersperse areas of softness. Pockets of riddles are embedded within the composition, inviting the viewer to a dance between intelligibility and a considered lack thereof. Jolting our sensorial faculties at every turn, Ratcliff journeys through our retinas and whets a most fundamental appetite within us to see our dwelling place in its infinite faces. Esteros del Iberá, a landmark volume celebrating a peerless place, invites the reader to experience one of the largest freshwater wetlands in South America, a wonderland of sky, water, grass, and birdsong.

One of the largest freshwater wetlands in South America, comprising more than 2.5 million acres, the Iberá was forged from ancient geological forces and the long-ago wanderings of the mighty Paraná River. Today the landscape is a locus of conservation activity—including a campaign to create a new national park to protect the biodiversity of this striking region. Increasingly a destination for nature lovers, the marshlands attract birdwatchers from across the Earth, who come to see some 360 avian species that are found here.

A native son of Corrientes, world-class nature photographer Juan Ramón Díaz Colodrero has spent years documenting the region’s birdlife and other wild creatures. In Esteros del Iberá, his dazzling images put the reader into the heart of the Iberá’s life-affirming beauty. Supporting essays by leading regional conservationists and other experts illuminate the Iberá’s diverse natural communities and distinctive human culture. While the area is remarkably unspoiled, innovative conservation projects are augmenting wildlife populations and returning missing native species—such as the giant anteater and the jaguar—to their rightful homes in the landscape of shining waters. The Iberá presents a stark contrast to the modern world, a place where the trajectory of land health is moving toward integrity and wildness.

Perito Moreno National Park presents a stunning collection of images, from renowned landscape photographer Antonio Vizcaino, of where the windswept Patagonian steppe meets the Andes. A stronghold of wild nature in a region so alluring that it has become synonymous with beauty at the end of the Earth.

Where the windswept Patagonian steppe meets the Andes, and the massive unclimbed south wall of Cerro San Lorenzo looks down on the Lacteo Valley, a visitor understands: Perito Moreno National Park is a stronghold of wild nature. In a region so alluring that is has become synonymous with beauty at the end of the Earth, Perito Moreno National Park is an icon of Patagonia. Named in honor of revered early conservationist Perito Moreno, the “John Muir of Argentina,” this relatively little visited park is a magnet for intrepid travelers and ambitious alpinists.

In a book as grand as the natural area it celebrates, with supporting essays from experts on the park’s natural and cultural history, this book offers an armchair tour of one of the world’s most scenic and unsullied landscapes. Legendary businessman and philanthropist Douglas Tompkins (founder of The North Face) contributes the book’s foreword. In a dramatic gesture that expanded the park in 2013, Tompkins donated a key private inholding in Perito Moreno to the Argentine national parks administration. For all of who dream of Patagonia, Perito Moreno National Park is a ticket into the heart of the wild.

In Monte León National Park, photographer Antonio Vizcaíno takes readers on a visual tour of the park’s natural features, exploring the wildlife, landforms, textures, and sublime quality of light where land meets sea.

Endless sky, rock, and water: Where the arid grasslands of southern Argentina meet the Atlantic Ocean, the wild winds and waters of Patagonia have sculpted a magical landscape. This wonderland is Monte León National Park. Established in 2002 through public–private collaboration, the park’s creation was prompted by a gift from Kristine Tompkins, the former CEO of the clothing company named for this legendary region at the bottom of the Earth.

Encompassing roughly 155,000 acres and 25 miles of shoreline, Monte León is now held in trust for future generations as part of Argentina’s national park system. It is both a destination for adventurous travelers and a home to an array of charismatic creatures—a place where guanacos remain ever wary of stalking pumas, vast colonies of Magellanic penguins coat the beaches, and every tide pool harbors a universe in miniature.

With essays by the key players who helped birth the new park and other experts complementing Vizcaíno’s images, Monte León is a book as beautiful as the landscape it celebrates. For everyone who has ever dreamed of Patagonia, Monte León is your invitation to visit a treasure of the Patagonia coast.

Chile’s Corcovado National Park is one of the last great wilderness areas on Earth. In Corcovado National Park, renowned landscape photographer Antonio Vizcaíno captures the beauty and diversity of a magical setting almost untouched by modern humans.

Shimmering lakes. Snow-capped mountains. Primeval forest where pumas haunt the shadows. Free-flowing rivers that race to the sea. This is Chile’s Corcovado National Park. Rising above it all is the Corcovado volcano, whose striking form has been a land¬mark for travelers along the Pacific coastline in southern Chile for centuries. Modern visitors to the region have called the mountain, “the Matterhorn of South America.”

Designated in 2005 by President Ricardo Lagos, the park was born of an innovative public-private collaboration spurred by the largest-ever donation of private land to Chile’s system of protected areas. With a foreword by Lagos and essays by other principals in the park’s creation, Corcovado National Park explores the natural wonders of an extraordinary place and tells the stories of the conservationists who made certain it would remain a bastion of wild nature held in trust by the Chilean people for future generations.

Paul ChesleyA Photographic Voyage

A Photographic Voyage is a collection of photographer Paul Chesley’s most indelible images, shot over the course of his 40-year career at National Geographic Society.

This collection takes us to a score of locations across the globe. From Bhutan to Bali, from China to Ukraine, from Micronesia to Cuba, Chesley has photographed not only the romance of illusions but “the magic of reality in thousands of instants,” as said by Joseph Conrad.

Paul Chesley’s photographs are juxtaposed to provocative historical and personal essays by journalist Keith Lorenz. These essays are a counterpoint, which together with Chelsey’s images create a mood, not an explanation; a visceral journey through the exotic, the lush and the beautiful while providing thoughtful insight into the lands and people that Chelsey has encountered—a parallax view through which readers gain a greater perspective on the world around them.

Sand and Golf: How Terrain Shapes the Game explores what makes golf, and golf course architecture, so special on sandy terrain.

Golf was born on sandy ground and the features of the game are a direct product of that terrain. Fairways and greens were derived from the naturally occurring areas of short grass found among the coastal dunes of Scotland. The original sand traps were areas of bare sand that can be found scattered throughout any dune landscape. As the game spread beyond the coastal dunes it took these features with it, and while they have been incorporated into a variety of landscapes they have always fit best on sandy ground. For this reason each major expansion in golf has begun with new courses on sandy ground. Even the best courses of the modern era are products of sandy terrain. The reason golf works so well on sandy ground is that it quite literally belongs there.

Golf on sandy terrain is something special because golf itself is a product of that terrain. Sand and Golf looks at all aspects of the relationship between sand and golf, from golf’s earliest days to the spread of the sport across the globe. Golf and golf course architecture on sandy sites is explored in every detail, using examples and illustrations from the best sandy courses in the world.

war r e n le H r e r

A LIFE IN BOOKS: The Rise and Fall of Bleu Mobley is an illuminated novel containing 101 books within it, all written by Warren Lehrer’s protagonist who finds himself in prison looking back on his life and career.

Nearly a year after controversial author Blue Mobley is thrown into a federal prison for refusing to reveal the name of a confidential source, he decides to break his silence. But it’s not as simple as giving up a name to the grand jury. Over the course of one long night, in the darkness of his prison cell, he whispers his life story into a microcassette recorder, tracing his journey from the public housing project of his youth, to a career as a journalist, then experimental novelist, college professor, accidental bestselling author, pop-culture pundit, and unindicted prisoner.

This four-color, full-length novel fuses art and literature, and distinguishes itself as one of those books you’ll want to hold in your hands, feast your eyes on, read and re-read, share with friends, and treasure for years to come.

The story highlights the importance of keeping dreams close to the heart, while engaging children and adults alike with dazzling illustrations and a fun rhyme scheme.

A lonely little blue planet’s wish for a friend is heard by the loving sun, and so begins the eternal friendship between the earth and moon. All will surely be enchanted by this cheery spin on how the sun, moon, and earth accompany each other in outer space, bonded through the magic of dreams.

about th e author

Jon Riggs (1959-2011) grew up in southern California and spent the majority of his creative life living and working in Laguna Beach, CA. For the past twenty years, Jon worked as an art director, creative consultant, and set designer for major movie studios and in commercial and broadcast media production houses. His strong creative spirit inspired many, and the deep connection he felt with the earth and his surroundings was part of what made his life exceptional. Sadly, Jon passed away far too soon in the fall of 2011. This book, inspired by his playful artwork and the sweet story he wrote on a whim long ago, is dedicated to his two daughters.

Alexandria Nazar received her degree in Fine Arts and History from UC Davis in 2011; shortly thereafter she moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue a career in the arts. Though her training was in fine arts, Alexandria’s true love is illustration—collaborating with local writers and poets, she loves to bring the written word to life.

Editor Corrine R. Evanoff has long desired to fuse her love of the written word with the sprightly joy she feels when entertaining children, and the result is her first book-editing project, Little Blue Planet. She holds a B.A. in History from Sonoma State University, works at a publishing house in Marin, and does freelance editorial work in her spare time. Corrine resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
