HYMNS OF THE DAY
Resurrection Apolytikion - Tone 8
From on high you descended, Compassionate One, you
accepted three days in the tomb, in order to free us from
our suffering. Our life and resurrection, Lord, glory to you.
Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom) Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen
You showed forth; By sending your Holy Spirit down upon them
and through them the universe You drew unto your net. O
lover of mankind Glory to You.
Kontakion of Cheesefare Sunday - Tone 6
O Master, Prudence, Guide of Wisdom, Instruction to the
foolish and Defender of the poor, strengthen my heart and
grant it discernment. Give me words, Word of the Father, for
behold, I shall not keep my lips from crying out to You, "O
Merciful One, have mercy on me who has fallen."

EPISTLE READING
EPISTLE READER.....JAYNE POULLOS
Priest: Let Us Attend…
Reader: Sing praises to our God, sing praises…clap your
hands, all you nations.
Priest: Wisdom…
Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans
13:11-14; 14:1-4
Priest: Let us be Attentive...
Reader: Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than
when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at
hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put
on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves
becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and
drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not
in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its
desires.
As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but
not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat
anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let
not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not
him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for
God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment
on the servant of another? It is before his own master
that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is
able to make him stand.
7
GOSPEL READING
The Reading is from The Gospel of Matthew 6:14-21
The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not
forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father
forgive your trespasses.
"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the
hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting
may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have
received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your
head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be
seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and
your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where
moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and
steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves
do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is,
there will your heart be also."

MINISTRY NEWS
PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
GENERAL ASSEMBLY: Our next general assembly meeting has
been changed to Sunday, March 31 immediately after liturgy. We
decided to change the date because our previous plans landed
on the same day as the L.A. Marathon. Our speaker on the 31st is
Dr. Nikos Stefanidis from the Philanthropia and Parenting group.
We thought that some of you might wish to bring a donation to the
meeting for Dr. Stefanidis’s work. Items you could donate are: a
package of undershirts or socks, blankets, and/or travel-sized
samples for personal hygiene from the drug store. We’ll see you
on the 31st!
*Don’t forget our SEE’S candy sale will take place on Sundays after
church. We will be selling for 3 Sundays: April 14, 21 and 28th! All
proceeds will go to our Kids ‘n Cancer Camps. The camps are
located in California, Arizona and Washington. We are the ONLY
Metropolis in the United States that has these wonderful camps.
The camps are run by the Metropolis Philoptohos and funded
strictly on donations. The days at camp these children and their
families receive to just have some fun and get away from the
world of hospitals and chemotherapy, is truly a gift of love.
PHILOPTOHOS MOTHER OF THE YEAR: We are happy to announce
that the Philoptohos Mother of the Year is Susan Giokaris Patzakis!
Susan has been a dedicated member of Philoptohos and Saint
Sophia. We will be honoring Susan at our Mother’s Day Luncheon
and Fashion Show on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Universal
Sheraton Hotel. Please mark your calendar to join us. Solicitation
letters giving you the opportunity to place a greeting in the
program book are out in the mail.
Don’t forget our election meeting for the Board of Directors is
Sunday, May 19 immediately after liturgy! Be sure you pay your
dues so you are eligible to vote. If you wish to run for the Board,
please send a letter addressed to the President of Philoptohos and
state your intentions. You must be a steward in good standing with
Philoptohos and a steward at our Saint Sophia Cathedral.
We wish to express our condolences to our board member Jan
Pastras on the loss of her husband Ted. He was a man who loved
his wife, church, community, Philoptohos, family and friends. We
will all miss him. May his memory be eternal.
With love in Christ’s service,
Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

MINISTRY NEWS (continued)
PHILANTHROPIA MINISTRY NEWS:
THANK YOU: Dearly beloved in the Lord, at the onset I wish to thank His
Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos, Father John Bakas, and my brother
priests in the Southern California area who have sent messages of prayers
and get-well wishes. Also, I thank the dear ladies of the Philoptohos
chapters for their kindness in words and actions. I also thank each and
every one of you for the get-well cards, emails and the phone calls of
“Get well soon Father, we miss you.” Above all, I thank my Pres. Sophia
and our children, Perry and Carrie who have been a supportive team in
my recovery.
IN MEMORIAM: A two-year memorial service will be held this month for Dr.
Theodore McEvoy, a devoted Christian and co-founder of the
PHILANTHROPIA Ministry, and Constantine Marcou, Esq., Philanthropia’s
legal counsel for many years. In addition, we remember Brian Minto,
another supporter of Philanthropia, and Ted Pastras, the mainstay of our
festivals, member of the parish council and all around devoted Orthodox
Christian member of Saint Sophia. May their memories be eternal.
SCHEDULE FOR CONFESSIONS: During Great Lent (which begins on
Monday, March 18th) Father Peter will be available for confessions by
appointment on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. in the St. Demetrios
chapel. Please check with Eleni in the church office for detailed
information.
GET ON THE BUS: This project is in full swing of collecting monies so that we
may sponsor a bus again this year. Exact times and dates will be
forthcoming, but as always observed on Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day
respectively. We will keep you posted as the day approaches.
Thank you!

men, women or children. The two new receptacles for "used clothing"

As we enter this Lent, participating in prayer and fasting, make it
joyful by feasting on showing “Love of neighbor” through
almsgiving. Once again, the AMNOS Ministry will make an effort to
fill a 5 ton truck with your donation of quality clothing to be
distributed to those less fortunate.
The Old Testament Prophet Isaiah suggests this bit of wisdom, ...the
fast that I have chosen...is when I see the naked, to cover him with
clothing... Make this Lent even more joyful by conducting your
own clothing drive at school, work or in your neighborhood.
St. Sophia's 10th annual, 5 TONS OF LOVE clothing drive will take
place over the next seven weeks. (Drop off location TBD) Please
contact Fr. Allan Boyd or Dean & Christina Peratsakis for more info
@ 818-351-0122 or [email protected] Volunteers needed. Thank you.

For those who are sick or suffering…
St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for
the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will
save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)
Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and
prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need
prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our
priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests during
St Sophia Cathedral’s office hours.
As you request prayer, you may also wish to make an offering to
Saint Sophia’s Altar Fund. Label: “For the health of…”

SUNDAY OF FORGIVENESS
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Please pray these prayers along with our clergy when called upon
at the end of the Divine Liturgy. Let us prepare for Lent by asking
for God’s forgiveness.
I want to wash away the record of my sins with tears, O Lord,
and through the rest of my life to please You by turning my life ever
more towards You; but the enemy deceives me and fights against
my soul. Before I perish entirely, save me, O Lord.
If a man takes refuge from the storm in this harbor, will he
not be saved? If in his agony he kneels before this house of
healing, will he not be cured? O Maker of all and Physician of the
sick, before I perish entirely, save me, O Lord.
Wash me with my tears, O Savior, for I am sullied by many
sins. Therefore I fall down before You: I have sinned, have mercy
upon me, O God.
I am a sheep of Your spiritual flock, and to you I flee for
refuge, O Good Shepherd. I have gone astray, O God: seek me
and have mercy upon me.
The angels praise You without ceasing; O king and Master,
and I fall before You weeping like the Tax Collector: O God be
merciful to me and save me.
Since you are everlasting, O my soul be not overwhelmed
by the waves of this life; but return to soberness and cry to your
Benefactor: God be merciful to me and save me.
Give me tears, O God, as once You gave to the woman
who had sinned, and count me worthy to wash Your feet that
have delivered me from the ways of error. As sweet-smelling
ointment let me offer You a pure life, created in me by my turning
evermore toward You; and may I also hear those words for which I
long: “Your faith has saved you, go in peace.”
I run to You for safe haven, O God who loves mankind. I
ask You, who alone are free from sin; do not turn away from me,
but before the end comes, grant mercy to my humbled soul and
save me.
