Amist often rose from the earth andwatered all the ground.

Then the Lord God took dust from theground and formed man from it. TheLord breathed the breath of life into theman’s nose. And the man became a livingperson. Then the Lord God planted agarden in the East, in a place calledEden. He put the man he had formed inthat garden.

. . . The Lord God put the man in the garden of Eden to care for it and work it.

. . . Then the Lord God said, “It is notgood for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him.”

Genesis

From the ground God formed every wild animal and every bird in the sky. He brought them to the man so the mancould name them. Whatever the mancalled each living thing, that became itsname. The man gave names to all thetame animals, to the birds in the sky andto all the wild animals. But Adam didnot find a helper that was right for him.So the Lord God caused the man tosleep very deeply. While the man wasasleep, God took one of the ribs fromthe man’s body. Then God closed theman’s skin at the place where he tookthe rib. The Lord God used the rib fromthe man to make a woman. Then theLord brought the woman to the man.

First Forgiveness: Adam

It’s easy to remem-ber Adam for hisfailures. After all,how could he make

such a silly mistake asbelieving a snake? No doubt, Adamreally messed up.But Adam is a hero. He named all

the animals. He was given Eve, abeautiful wife. And he walked withGod. Being the first man who everlived is a big deal. It’s never easy tobe the first anything.Adam also stands as the first to

receive forgiveness. Sin in the worldwas his fault. But he also looked toGod for help.

He admitted his weaknesses. And he humblyreceived the consequences for his actions. Adamis a mighty warrior because he believed Godcould get him out of the mess he had created. And he was right. God could and did save Adam.God will also save all people who look to Jesusfor hope and forgiveness. Whenever you sin,

remember Adam. Turn toGod for help. Admit yoursin, and feel the goodnessof God’s forgiveness.

Enemy Fire

Winning warswould be easy ifthere were no ene-mies. You’d justsimply march across

to the land you want and take it.Unfortunately, life doesn’t work thatway. Soldiers fight real enemies. Ifthey are not careful, they can be hurtor killed. We are called God’s soldiers for a reason. We are in a great big spiritual battle. We have a very real enemy. Satan has been on earthsince God created it. He was in thegarden with Adam and Eve. He hasbeen fighting hard against God’s people ever since.

13

Satan is sneaky, but he is not more powerfulthan God. We can win daily battles against himby standing strong in God’s truth. We mustwatch out for his lies. Ask God to help youknow what is true so you can live it and share itwith others. God’s kingdomgrows stronger when hispeople fight togetherto believe and live histruth.

Faithfulness

Faithfulness is a really longword. But that’s

okay. It can help you rememberwhat it means. To be faithfulmeans to keep doing what isright for as long as you live. Noah was a faithful man. He lived in a place where all the people around him weremaking bad choices. Everyoneelse forgot God. But Noahremembered.

What It’s All A-boat

Imagine being ayoung recruit inthe army. Oneday your com-

manding officer gives you an orderthat seems quite strange. He is send-ing you into enemy territory. Hewants you to cover your skin withmud. He tells you to tie branches toyour back. Pretty soon, you lookrather silly. Would you obey, or would you be

afraid of what your friends think? If you’re asmart soldier, you’ll do asyou’re told.

Soldiers can hide better from the enemy whenthey blend in with their surroundings. It mightlook strange on a normal day. But when you’retrying to sneak through woods and marshes, thecovering can save your life. It’s a good thing Noahobeyed God, his Com manding Officer. It lookedvery funny to everyoneelse for him to bebuilding a boatfar from water. However, no onewas laughingwhen the floodcame. It’s alwaysbetter to paymore attentionto what Godsays if we wantto stay safe.

20

Treasure TipGod’s directions aren’t alwayseasy to follow. But when weobey, we experience God’s bless-ing. What has God asked you todo that you think is too hard? Isit loving your brother or sister? Is it sharing your faith with oth-ers? Is it being respectful to yourparents? Whatever it is, tell Godabout it. Ask him to help youobey, no matter what any-one else says or thinks.
