God’s Love In Action
Mission Statement
Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.
How Does Habitat Work?
Habitat homes are built with volunteer labor and donations of money and materials.
Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans.
The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build additional Habitat houses.
Alachua Habitat for Humanity
Locally, we have built 78 homes since we were established in 1986.
We were awarded a capacity build grant last summer and our goal is to increase the number of homes built in one year from 3-4 up to 10.
We have completed 5 homes so far this year and have 7 under construction right now.
A Community in Need
US Census (2000)- Alachua County Families below poverty line: 12.2%
(National average 9.2%) Individuals below poverty line: 22.8%
(National average 12.4%)
Alachua County Affordable Housing Study (2003) Median house prices rose 25% from 1998-
2002 50% of renter households and 20% of owner
households pay more than 30% of their income for housing, and these households fall disproportionately among very low and low-income households.
Who Qualifies?
People have had to lived in Alachua County for at least a year.
Live in inadequate housing. They have a steady income. Monthly bills are paid timely and do
not exceed 40% of monthly income.
Family Selection Committee
Reviews family’s financials Interviews family
Need Willingness to participate Ability to repay
No discrimination
Family Selection Continued
A family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan.
Habitat does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, age, gender, familial status, national origin or disability.
Family Support Committee
Volunteers provide guidance and emotional support.
Residents must complete classes on personal money management, home maintenance, etc.
What is Required of a Resident?
Habitat is not a giveaway program. Residents must complete 400 hours of
“sweat equity.” (Work 200 hours on their neighbors home and 200 on their own)
Residents must pay monthly, no-interest mortgage payments.
Celebration Oaks
We are currently building a community of 60 homes in the southeast region of Gainesville.
Each family working side-by-side with their neighbors and other volunteers.
Construction began in January 2004 $3.5 million in charitable donations are needed
to cover costs.
The Results:Lives are Changed
Children of homeowners are: 25% more likely to graduate from high
school 116% more likely to graduate from college 59% more likely to own their own home
within 10 years of moving from their parents household.
The poverty cycle is broken. Communities come together.
Tithing

We have built 58 houses in the third world.
Goals
Our five year goal is to complete building all 60 homes in Celebration Oaks.
We also want to have one additional house in the process of being built at all points in time.
To continue working with other low income housing programs.
