“The Cross of Christ”by Rev. David L. Jordan

The tall oak tree stood on a hill for oh so many years,

It heard the sounds of battle rage and seen the funeral biers.

There’d been so many battles there for old Jerusalem,

The Greeks had gone, the Persians too, the Romans now had come.

The Romans ruled with iron hand as Daniel had foretold,

Their standard had been raised on high an eagle made of gold.

And then there’d been that brilliant star that cold December night,

That shone o’er little Bethlehem and filled the sky with light.

And it was just a week ago that strange parade passed by,

They’d cheered a man upon an ass with palm fronds waving high.

Now what is this, the woodsmen come they’re looking for a tree?

They need one tall and strong today, I hope it is not me.

Their axes bit into the wood, the chips flew all around,

In just a few short minutes, then the tree lay on the ground.

The men worked at a hurried pace a cross they made that day.

The soldiers came with swords and shields and dragged the cross away.(continued)

“The Cross of Christ”

by Rev. David L. Jordan

There was that man who men had cheered just one short week ago.

He now was mocked and spit upon, just why I do not know.

The soldiers made Him bear the cross toward Golgotha Hill,

And never did He once complain, He said it was God’s will.

They pounded nails into His hands and hung Him on the cross,

And on each side they hung a man who most would say was lost.

And as the hours passed slowly by, the people jeered at Him,

He prayed unto the Father then, to please forgive their sin.

The Soldiers cast lots for His clothes just as the Psalmist said,

And when they came to break His bones He was already dead.

And with His death an earthquake came, the graves were opened wide.

The Temple veil was torn in two, the sun the clouds did hide.

Then as the soldiers saw these things one man was heard to say,

“He truly was the Son of God who died right here today.”

They took His body from the cross and wrapped Him in a sheet,

And one who mourned His death that day, with tears had washed His feet.

They bore Him to a borrowed tomb and laid His body there,

And when they heard the soldiers’ feet, they ran away in fear.

Then on the first day of the week a miracle occurred,

Rejoice today, He lives again, was what each man now heard.

Now with the passing of the years I’m sure that cross is gone,

But the atoning death of Christ will continue to live on.

For that was why He came to earth, to save us from our sin,

To give eternal life to men for all who trust in Him.

“…who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree,

that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness –

by whose stripes you were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)

A question I have heard repeatedly, over the 40+ years since I got saved,

from people I have shared the gospel with is this: “what about the people

that have never had a Bible to know the truth?” The answer, of course, can

be found in the word of God. Psalm 19:1-4 “The heavens declare the glory

of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters

speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor

language Where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all

the earth, And their words to the end of the world.” (Italics mine)

Many moons ago as I picked up a copy of

Our Daily Bread, there was a photo on the

cover, much like the one here, of crocuses

springing up through the snow in what looks

like the dead of winter. This was shortly

after I got serious with God and everywhere I

looked, it seemed like life was coming back

from death.

God Speaksby Mary Anne Jordan

“Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden and in the garden

a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because

of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.” (John 19:41-42)

Most evenings when we are in our family room at sunset, God paints the

sky for us with a different sketch every evening with hues and tints that in

my human mind I cannot imagine. In the fall season, our maple trees

literally glow with colors from pale greens to the deepest reds and

everything in between when His sun shines on them. His glory is displayed

everywhere and certainly supersedes anything man can create. Many a

crystal-clear night when the moon is full it lights up the sky and illuminates

all the stars and makes them seem even closer to me. And how about those

caterpillars (that are so scary to me) that are transformed into a myriad of

colors of butterflies. A reflection of God’s ability to change our lives; if He

does it for the caterpillar, why not do it for man? Spend some time looking

around your own yard or neighborhood or beach or park and experience a

gift from God that will make you more aware of His presence.
