The idea is that people of faith are linked together by the bond of Christ that transcends time and space. It is a spiritual union between people that creates an intimate fellowship. The writer of Hebrews likens it to a “crowd of witnesses”—those who have passed from one side of eternity to the next—yet they are still able to observe what is happening in life. Perhaps a modern analogy would be a stadium where the people in the stands are those ones who have gone on before us in death yet they watch and cheer on those who are still playing on the field. This analogy brings me to another answer to our question of what we affirm. Frankly put, people don’t disappear at death. What we believe is that even though someone dies, they still live; not in the same form but the essence of the person does not change or cease to exist. Scriptures say that what is perishable changes into imperishability, what is corruptible changes to incorruptibility. Death is not the final act in our life. The reason we need to affirm the Communion of Saints is for days like today. All Saints Sunday is a day where the church remembers those who have traveled in death before us. We seek to praise God, remember who they are, and honor the influence they have had on our life. Though today can be filled with grief, ultimately it is a good day. We, with one voice, proclaim that death doesn’t control us because of the power of the resurrection. At the same time, as we grieve those who have taken their seats in the stands to cheer us on, we trust in God and the hope of resurrection to eternal life.
