Parish Mission Statement

One Family

United as members of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, we

are committed, as ONE FAMILY, to be messengers of God’s love and

presence in the world, and to welcome and invite others to become part

of this family and this mission.

One Heart

Called by our Baptism to a life of service in the Lord, we are committed,

with ONE HEART, to live in charity, practice the works of mercy, and work

for peace and justice.

One Faith

Strengthened by God’s Word and nourished by His Sacraments, we are

committed, in ONE FAITH, to promote lives of learning, living, and

proclaiming the Gospel message, as we continue to grow in the

knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of all that embodies these

awe-inspiring truths.

“TITHING IS GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVINGI It

We give to God because we want to. Thank you for tithing.

Msgr. Nicolo

I think we took a giant step forward when we decided to tithe. Let us

earnestly continue. Parishioner

JULY 2, 2017 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

NIC NOTES

Dear Parishioners,

No matter how old you are, it seems that whenever

schools are off for summer vacation, we realize that

it is now the summer. Well, schools are off, and I

guess it is officially the summer.

Usually, in the life of the parish priest the summer

is a time to work on planning all of the parish activ-

ities for the coming "academic" year. It is also a

time to evaluate, revise, and enhance parish pro-

grams and activities. The priests also have an op-

portunity to look into new programs and evaluate

their usefulness in the parish.

Please mark your calendars for our Fourth of July

Mass. The Mass will be held in the Church. It gives

all of us the opportunity to thank God for the many

blessings and favors that He has bestowed upon us

as Americans. Sometimes we don't realize how

truly blessed we are to live in a land that is free.

We need always remember that freedom isn't

always free. Many people sacrificed their lives so

that we could be free.

Please spread the good news that we will be having

our Vacation Bible School again this year. Over the

last several years, many of our children have had

the opportunity to learn more about God in such a

happy and fun-filled environment. I am deeply

grateful to the many adults and young adults who

have volunteered their time and talents to make it

such a great experience for our children. I am also

very grateful to Kurt Zampier for all his hard work

in making our Vacation Bible School such a

success.

Several weeks from now you will be receiving

chances for our Annual Parish Fund raiser. You

will have the opportunity to win prizes over the

course of three drawing dates. The grand prize

will be $2000. I'm always very grateful for your

cooperation and generosity in making this

successful.

2018 MASS BOOK

Our 2018 Mass Book will open on Monday,

July 24, at 9 AM in the Rectory office.

Announced Masses are available for $15.

Sanctuary Candles, burning for a week in the

Church or the Chapel, are $20. Candles, burning

for a week at the Blessed Virgin Mary and/or St.

Joseph Statues in the Church, are $20 per candle

(4 candles are available). An offering of Bread &

Wine for a week is $50.

What a wonderful day we as a parish had on

Saturday, June 17. We had the investiture of the

Brown Scapular in the Chapel, as well as in the

Church. We also had the Consecration of the

Parish to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate

Heart. All in all, it was truly a grace-filled and spir-

itual day for everyone who participated. I am sure

that we as a parish will be blessed.

May God, through the intercession of

St. Helena, bless us!

Love and Prayers,

Msgr. Nicolo

MADELEINE’S MESSAGE

The Meaning of

Independence Day

Independence is America's Heritage.

The Fourth of July is a holiday that most Americans

celebrate for various reasons. The festivity may

involve family, friends, or public gatherings.

Popular culture would have you believe that the

gala is a birthday party for the country; flags wave,

bands march, and bystanders cheer. The parades

are pageants, visible spectacles for all to applaud

and enjoy.

After the confetti blows away, what is the meaning

of the day? Commemoration of the Declaration of

Independence should be the primary reason for the

remembrance. Stay safe this Fourth of July.

Thank God for this day!

Have a great week!

Madeleine

CATHE’S CORNER As they say, a picture is

worth one thousand

words! These pictures

from Pre K 4 S are very

telling! In picture #1:

They have a question of

the day in PreK4S and

the question on the last

day, “Did you learn a lot

this Year?” Their

response was a UNANIMOUS, “YES” from all

students! It doesn’t get better than that!

Blessings on Mr. Smith and his gang – moving on

to KINDERGARTEN! Yeah!

Have a great week!

With love,

Sister Cathe

If anyone has mistakenly taken a badge and not

returned it to the counting room, please return it as

soon as possible. Our inventory is close to zero.

KEN’S CACHE

The Stations of the Cross did not arrive in a tidy,

neat package. For centuries the stations varied

widely in number and designation; in a few places

there was even another name for the devotion.

At Neuremberg, for instance, the stations numbered

seven and the devotion was known as the Seven

Falls, after the representations by artist Adam

Krafft, which depicted Christ either prostrate or

sinking under the weight of the cross. In other

places the stations varied from as few as nine to as

many as thirty-seven. The Diocese of Vienna set

the number at eleven, only five of which correspond

to today’s stations.

No one knows for sure how the Church finally

arrived at fourteen stations, though it seems likely

that the number was decided by devotional writers

of the Middle Ages rather than actual devotional

practice along the Holy Land’s via cruscis itself. It

was Clement XII who, in entrusting the devotion to

the Franciscans, fixed the number at fourteen.

Again, that was in 1731. The fourteen are as folows:

Jesus in condemned to death. 2) Jesus takes up his

cross. 3) Jesus falls the first time. 4) Jesus meets his

afflicted mother. 5) Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus

carry the cross. 6) Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.

7) Jesus falls the second time. 8) Jesus comforts the

women of Jerusalem. 9) Jesus falls the third time.

10) Jesus is stripped of his garments. 11) Jesus is

nailed to the cross. 12) Jesus dies on the cross. 13)

Jesus is taken down from the cross. 14) Jesus is laid

in the tomb.

There is some modern opinion that the Way, or

Stations of the Cross, is liturgically and psychologi-

cally incomplete because it ends without reference

to the Resurrection. Some thus propose a fifteenth

station for meditation upon the Resurrection; others

argue that this is unnecessary, as the place of Jesus’

entombment was also the place of Resurrection, and

therefore meditation on the one can be extended to

the other. Discussion on the point seems largely

academic, however, with the devotion gone into

such an eclipse.

God Bless You!

Deacon Ken

HELP US KEEP ST. HELENA BEAUTIFUL

BY ADOPTING A GARDEN!

The Garden Club maintains various flower beds on the

Church campus grounds. We are asking for your help

in keeping our gardens looking beautiful. Maybe a

family or a Church ministry group could adopt one of

the gardens to upkeep during the spring, summer, and

fall months. We are asking that the gardens are weed-

ed weekly or as needed. Andrea Caperilla will be

watering all the areas where there is not a watering

system. The areas in blue print below need to be

adopted:

Two Large Plots in Front of Church Front and Side of Bell Tower Right Side of Church including area near steps—Diane Murasky Blessed Mother Statue—Diane Murasky Stations - Cynthia Gantz Wayside Garden near Stations Garden by Transformer across from Stations Island in front of Empress Room Front of Empress Room Eight Urns at Church and 2 Urns at Chapel – Andrea Caperilla Front and Side of Information Center Left Side of Church including Hydrangea Garden Row of Holly Bushes between Church and Chapel
