God Made Pastors… God laid His hand upon them and breathed hope into
their spirits. He filled them with His strength,
and placed a message of urgency around their lives.
God challenged them to greater works than He had
ever done. Then, with His own hand of blessing,
He wrapped them up in His mantle of love
and called them Pastors.
October is Clergy Appreciation Month. Let us thank Dr. Dan and Dr. Reppa Cottrell for their leadership, compassion, and inspiring sermons. “God has given each of you a gift. Use it to help each other. This will show God’s loving favor. “ 1 Peter 4:10 (NLV)

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR...
Dear Members and Friends, September 26, 2016
It is Monday morning and the water at Quidnick Reservoir is like glass. The
reflections are like a mirror and there is such peace.
Of course, the birds are not happy with the owl that is lurking in the tree close
by. The chipmunks are leery of the hawk and the cat. The dog is sleeping in her bed
beside me and it looks as if the turtle may have clipped one of the ducks’ feet. The
Osprey just tried for a fish. And I’m waiting for the mouse trap to go off. Peace!
Yes, if we want, we can keep our blinders on and only look at the surface of the
water and proclaim ‘peace’. But as Jeremiah kept prophesying;
The following passages are from the New Revised Standard Version:
They have treated the wound of my people carelessly, saying,
“Peace, peace,” when there is no peace. 6:14 & 8:11 NRSV
And passages from the Living Bible:
You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there! Yet the priests and
prophets give assurances of peace when all is war. 6:14
They give useless medicine for my people’s grievous wounds, for they
assure them all is well when that isn’t so at all! 8:11
We expected peace, but no peace came; we looked for health, but there
was only terror.” 8:15
Now at last he will heal us and bind our wounds. But no peace has come,
and there is only trouble and terror everywhere. 14:19
Do not mourn or weep for them, for I have removed my protection and my
peace from them—taken away my loving-kindness and my mercies. 16: 5
(Continued —>)
We are living in a time much like that about which Jeremiah spoke. Many of us,
myself included, want to ignore our surroundings and we like to think of the peace
around us without facing the ‘terror’ that is everywhere. I believed that we are called
just as Jeremiah was; to look ‘below the surface’, to open our eyes to the conditions of
our sisters and brothers around us and to ‘love our neighbor’ EVEN if we don’t always
agree with them.
There are refugees in this world whether you see them in your neighborhood or
not. They are PEOPLE just like your children, your family and friends. There are
innocent people being killed every day because of their faith or the color of their skin.
Others are deliberately trying to harm the very people we pay to protect us. Many peo-
ple in power care nothing about the ‘others’ as long as the profits and the almighty
dollar keeps coming in. Our forests are disappearing as is the ice. The very air that we
breathe is polluted and the justification is ‘jobs’.
When is enough, enough? When will we, God’s people, stand up for what we
believe? Or do we believe that God so loved the world? Or is it only you and me that
Christ came to save?
Do we believe there is no Greek or Jew, no male or female, or slave or free in
Christ? We know there is human trafficking (slaves), but what have we done? We are
aware there are aliens among us, but have we reached out to offer a home to them? Are
we so blinded by our blinders that we don’t even see how women continue to be judged
harsher for their actions and children go without boundaries and our families are torn
apart to make a living instead of making a life?
Are any of these situations redeemable? Is Jesus Christ all powerful? Are we
willing to trust Him and make our faith known in a way that is loving, compassionate
and that brings justice for all?
If you read the book of Jeremiah, you will not quickly jump on his band wagon.
Speaking out to share the wrath or the love of God is not always welcomed. Standing up
for those oppressed is not a popular thing to do. To call a halt to the name calling and
bad behavior of our leaders is not as easy as joining them. Seeking to help the poor, the
homeless or the refugee is something that will cost you.
(Continued —>)
Are you a Christian who just wants to see the surface of the water and pretend
that nature is peaceful? Or do you hear Christ’s call saying;
“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore, be as shrewd as
snakes and as innocent as doves. Matt. 10:16
Christ never said it would be easy to follow his commands BUT he does
promise to be with us and we know that;
“Yes, woe upon you, Pharisees, and you other religious
leaders—hypocrites! For you tithe down to the last mint leaf in your
garden, but ignore the important things—justice and mercy and faith.
Yes, you should tithe, but you shouldn’t leave the more important
things undone. Matt. 23:23
In another month we will be making a decision about the leaders of our
country, my hope is that you will;
pray before your vote,
act upon your rights,
seek justice ,
reach out to those who are less fortunate,
remember the aliens and the refugees,
only sort your laundry by color,
serve your LORD with gladness.
Keep in mind that we serve The Redeemer, the Prince of Peace, the
all-powerful God who loves us unconditionally, the one who can give us peace
that the world cannot give – a peace that passes our understanding.
There is a slight breeze on the water now, the owl has moved on and the
mouse trap went off. Ugh! I hope to see you at church, in your homes, at the
stores, in the line at the voting booths and on our knees in prayer.
May mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance, (Jude 2)

THANK YOU FOR THE
CAMP CANONICUS EXPERIENCE
Dear North Scituate Baptist Family, Thank you for letting me be able to go to Camp Canonicus this summer. I was a day camp helper. It was a great experience and I learned a lot from it. I enjoyed working with the children and I hope to do it in the future. Thanks for letting me go this summer. I loved it! From, Sarah Sneath
Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for helping me attend Camp Canonicus. I really do love going to camp. I love worshiping God out there in a safe place in the woods. I love meeting new people. I look forward to camp every year, and it makes me sad to leave. I went to a week of service camp where we went off site to help other people by making sandwiches for the homeless, cleaning sanctuaries, etc. But something that really touched me was being a leader to the younger kids. The Director of the camp, Deb G., told me that she wanted me on her staff because I was so good with the kids. I can't wait to be a counselor there. Thanks to your help, I've found a place that truly connects me to the Lord and Savior. I can't tell you how much camp means to me. Thank you Church Family. Love, Sadie Laprade

A Missionary Among Us
“I will go where you want me to go. I will be what you want me to be.”
Please keep in prayer Emily Bellows, one of our members who graduated from URI
in May and is now a part of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship staff team at URI as a Campus
Intern. InterVarsity is a campus ministry that strives to have a lifetime impact on its students by
creating space to encounter God, experience whole life transformation through a relationship
with Jesus, and graduate Christian leaders who will soon leave their mark on the world.
Remember also that along with prayer, encouragement and financial support are also
needed. Like most missionaries, InterVarsity staff workers are responsible for building a
network of partners who will surround their ministry through prayer and finance.
If you would like to be a partner in ministry with Emily, you can follow her work by
contacting her at 401-256-3473 or [email protected], and also make tax-
deductible gifts online at donate.intervarsity.org/donate/to/Emily_Bellows.

Congratulations!! - You have just finished reading the New Testament.
During the Sunday School hour Dr. Reppa is holding a discussion group on the New Testament readings. We will be discussing Revelation as you read it. Then when we are finished we are going back to the readings done during the summer to have opportunity to share the wisdom of those
