OUR MISSION As a Lutheran community of faith, we continue our history of proclaiming

Christ crucified through Word and Sacrament in joyful service to God and our neighbor.

WELCOME TO ST. MATTHEW’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

We welcome all who worship with us today. We gather as the Body of Christ to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise to God. Ushers are available to answer any of your questions. The church is equipped with a hearing impaired system. If you need a listening device, it may be obtained from an usher. In the minutes prior to the beginning of each service, the doors to the nave are closed, and quiet is encouraged. Music is offered which prepares worshipers to receive God’s gifts from His Hand – the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.

Everyone is asked to sign the Attendance Record found at the end of each pew or row of chairs. Please sign this record and pass it down to those beside you during the announcements. As it is returned, please note who is worshipping with you. The Attendance Record helps worshipers to put names and faces together. We make new friends in this way and grow in care for each other.

Celebrating Holy Communion: We believe, teach, and confess Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. All baptized Christians, who share this belief, are invited to receive Jesus as He comes in the Holy Communion to forgive the sins of the penitent. Children and others who are not yet receiving the sacrament, or who choose not to commune with us, are invited to come forward for a blessing, crossing their arms over their chest. After receiving the host in your outstretched hands, please eat the host if you wish to drink from the first cup, the metal chalice. Please hold the host if you wish to dip your host in the second cup, the ceramic chalice. Those unable to drink wine are urged simply to touch their host to the outside of the cup prior to eating.

The altar flowers are dedicated to the Glory of God and given by Ken and Jenny Manning for all blessings received, 52 years of marriage, and Ken’s 72nd birthday, and by Bonnie Berg in honor of Laine and Arlen.

Sunday School is sponsored by Denis and Janet Hall and dedicated to the Glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

WELCOME IN THE NAME OF JESUS! On this 2nd Sunday after Epiphany, St. Paul addresses the Church in Corinth with the truth that they have been set apart by God the Father through Jesus Christ and by the Father's grace alone. Joined to His saving death and glorious resurrection in Holy Baptism, the Corinthian Christians are called to reflect that relationship which they have received by living grateful lives that show forth the Holy Spirit's work in their lives. Nevertheless, on the day of judgment, they and we will only be found guiltless because of Christ's righteousness and not our own. Therefore, Christian discipleship is always dying to self daily that Christ may live in us.

I will strive to …… Pray daily Worship weekly Read the Bible Serve at and beyond St. Matthew’s Be in Relationship to encourage spiritual growth in others Give of my time, talents and resources

Silence for Meditation PRELUDE Lobt Gott, Ihr Christen Nikolaus Herman

WELCOME (Please sign the Attendance Record pad, and pass it along your pew.) * THE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Congregation: Amen.

Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Pastor: Most merciful God, Congregation: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.

* OPENING HYMN You Servants of God LBW 252

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 49:1-7 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. 5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 40:1-12 I waited patiently / for the Lord;* I waited patiently / for the Lord;* he inclined to me and / heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the / miry bog,* and set my feet upon a rock, making my / steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise / to our God.* Many will see and fear, and put their trust/ in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the / Lord his trust,* who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray af- / ter a lie! You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can com- / pare with you!* I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than / can be told. In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an / open ear.* Burnt offering and sin offering you have / not required. Then I said, “Behold, / I have come;* in the scroll of the book it is / written of me: I delight to do your will, / O my God;* your law is with- / in my heart.” I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great / congregation;* behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you / know, O Lord. I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and / your salvation;* I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great / congregation. As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your / mercy from me;* your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ev- / er preserve me! Glory to the Father, and / to the Son,* and to the / Holy Spirit; as it was in the begin- / ning, is now,* and will be forev- / er. Amen.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE VERSE

* THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Pastor: The HOLY GOSPEL according to St. John, the first chapter.

HOLY GOSPEL: John 1:29-42 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spir-it descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” 35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. * THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Assisting Minister: Lord, in your mercy. Congregation: Hear our prayers. ANNOUNCEMENTS
