DEAR YFC FAMILY AND FRIENDS,

2017 was a year full of surprises, moments of panic, big changes, and ultimately God’s blessing. Somehow in the journey of life we look for quiet, calm and order but we also see God’s guiding hand during the storms in ways we would never see if everything always went exactly according to our plan. “They that go down to the sea in ships and do business in great waters; these see the acts of the Lord and his wonders in the deep.” Psalms 107:23-24. So, let’s review this 2017 journey briefly: • New Youth for Christ ministries were

launched in Syria and Iraq! The news often highlights the difficulties of these places but God is moving among young people. We are excited about the opportunities in these tough places!

• We are also excited about new ministry opportunities in Haiti and Puerto Rico.

• Youth for Christ Jamaica celebrated its 70th anniversary of ministry! Our International Board, World Leadership Team and new International Director joined them to celebrate this mile-stone in November.

• A unique, donor-graded giving consortium, Foundation for the Nations, funded 29 worldwide YFC projects for $629,000 this year. For over four years this platform has funded 92 YFC projects at just over $2.1 million!

• Sadly, our Director of Communica-tions, Pieter Verhoeven, went to be with the Lord in the summer of 2017. Pieter was dearly loved by the team, had served faithfully for over 30 years and leaves behind his wife, Megan, and two children. Do pray for them as they grieve and adjust.

• Our triennial leadership gathering, General Assembly, was held in Miami in September, three days after Hurri-cane Irma made landfall! While many flights were delayed or cancelled, over 300 global YFC leaders from 60 nations gathered for training, community and refreshment. We shared the hotel with emergency workers restoring power and opening roads in Miami. Through it all the Lord mightily provided and we had a wonderful time together as the YFC family.

• In late October, our International Board selected me as the new CEO President/International Director. This decision was ratified by Youth for Christ nations in November and I offi-cially started January 1, 2018. I served as the Youth for Christ Canada Na-tional Director for the past 12 years.

• John Bastian, our CFO and Interim President during 2017, as he ran with both jobs through the year, did a terrific job. He was thanked by the Board and Youth for Christ family at the General Assembly.

As we begin 2018, I look forward to working with the team in Denver and our globally dispersed leadership team, clarifying our calling and vision to reach every young person on the planet with the gospel of Jesus Christ. John and I are transitioning the leadership of Global Engagement and our US missionaries serving inter-nationally with our YFC family as this division moves from YFC/USA to YFC International. I am also travelling exten-sively, meeting with financial partners and seeing, first hand, the worldwide ministry we serve.

Thank you for being a part of this calling to reach the world with the love of God! Because Jesus died for us,

BILLY GRAHAM AS YFC EVANGELIST By Dr. Art Deyo, YFC Historian

I recently visited the Billy Graham Center on the Wheaton College campus, where Billy attended college. You can take a tour of his life through several rooms and end up in “Heaven.” After all, that was his goal – to help people get to Heaven where he is now. And that’s been our goal in Youth for Christ – to present the gospel so that young people can make an informed decision regarding what they will do with their understanding of Jesus Christ.

Billy Graham was our first full-time staff member in YFC. He was hired in January, 1945 by founding President, Torrey Johnson, while on a fishing trip with Billy in Florida, after Billy recuperated from a two-month long battle with the mumps. They had huge goals from the beginning. The YFC leadership rented Chicago’s Soldier Field and on May 30, 1945, seventy thousand people came out to hear the gospel. They held the first national convention in July, 1945, at Winona Lake, Indiana, where 42 YFC leaders officially organised Youth for Christ International.

6 | Y F C I N T E R N AT I O N A L

Billy, Torrey and Charles Templeton took a six month long trip to Great Britain and other parts of Europe in 1946 and then Billy took another six month trip with Cliff and Billy Barrows in 1946-47. They were instrumental in starting Youth for Christ in Britain, which now has over 927 full and part-time staff. In Billy’s first year with YFC he trav-eled 135,000 miles to all 48 states on United Airlines and was given an award for the most miles traveled on United that year. By 1946 Youth for Christ had been established in over 300 cities and towns across the United States. By 1948 they were in all 48 states and had a goal to be in all 3,070 U.S. counties.

YFC International held its first World Congress in Beatenberg, Switzerland in 1948 with 250 dele-gates from all over the world. By 1950 YFCI was in 75 countries, and we instituted the “Million Souls Crusade,” anticipating worldwide revival! At the 1946 Convention at Winona Lake, Billy was named First Vice President, a position he held until 1955. He was placed on the Board of Directors very early and remained a board member until 1961. Although he was only on staff full-time for four years until he started his Los Angeles Crusade in 1949, Billy spoke at many YFC rallies and other events for years after that. He was the keynote speaker

for our 1959 and 1962 Capital Teen Conventions (in Washington, DC) with over 10,000 students attending each time. He spoke at our 25th and 40th anniversaries and at the YFC Celebration of Hope in 1987.

Billy wrote many articles for the monthly Youth for Christ Magazine, including his own testimony. On our 15th Anniversary in 1959, Billy wrote extensively about getting his start in YFC. He wrote, “To me the story of Youth for Christ will go down in history as one of the miracles of the 20th Century, not only in its origin but in its development… But the greatest miracle of all is the matter of the miraculous results. Literally thousands have been won to faith in Jesus Christ…There have been many ‘miracle decisions’. There will be many more in Youth for Christ, because, to me, Youth for Christ is one miracle after another. And I thank God for it.”

The Africa Area covers Sub-Saharan Africa — from Mauritania in the west all the way across to the east, the horn of Africa, down south to the tip of South Africa and then the Indian Island nations. Out of a total of 58 African nations, our area covers 50 and we are in 29 presently. With our strategy being to have nations pioneer other nations, we hope to see a few more nations develop a YFC ministry in the coming years. The continent of Africa is massive. According to statistics, ”Africa has 3,000 distinct ethnic groups, 2,000 languages and home to the most genetically diverse people on the Earth. It is the world’s second largest and second most populous continent.” Christianity, Islam and Traditional African religions are the main religions in Africa. It is the largest Christian continent in the world. Although religious freedom is enshrined in the constitutions of most countries and Muslims and Christians do live peacefully together, there is also evidence in Africa of growing restric-tions on religious freedom and targeted persecution of Christians.

With their goal of establishing an Isla-mist Caliphate, Islamist Jihadist move-ments have been targeting young people in some of our East and West

African nations conscripting young men into their militias and abducting young women. Against that backdrop, we see young people from other nations all pumped up and ready to go into those nations, putting their lives on the line to share the Gospel of Christ. No doubt, God is preparing an army to reach out to the young people of these nations affected by Islamist extremism. The light of God is shining so bright in our continent and we see thousands of young people giving their lives to God each year through the ministry of YFC. It is worthy of note that the challenges we face in our area, draw us closer to Him and become the stepping stones to our total and absolute dependence on God.

Ministry to young people in our Area is very diverse. Some of the ministries are as follows: crisis pregnancy, school assemblies, youth weekend clubs, orphanages, youths in detention, vocational/skills training, hair designing schools, street evangelism, computer training and literacy programmes, day care centres, youth camps, rehab training and counseling, and youth leadership training.

GOD IS DOING GREATER THINGS My name is Naofal. I was born into a Muslim family and raised according to Islam practices. From childhood, the Muslim religion requires going to Koranic school to learn and read from the Koran.

I also joined the Rose-Cross (Rosae Crucis) cult because I knew a girl who was in the Rose-Cross who taught me how to do transcendental meditation. Despite my involvement in this cult, I was also practising Islam until the day I met Mathieu, a YFC club leader in my high school. He invited me to attend the YFC club meeting. It is where I met Christ and gave my life to Him during the YFC end of the year gathering in 2012. It really turned over and turned around my life. I radi-cally changed the path of my life. I started reading the Bible and praying. And as I was doing so, a passion for lost young people filled my heart and today I cannot live without preaching the gospel to my peers.

Once I went to the University to pursue my studies, I started a YFC club at the University to reach out to many. We are life bearers and we need to enflame young people with the flame of the love of Christ. I then joined YFC as volunteer, and now I am a staff member and oversee a region that has been assigned to me by the national office.

YFC Americas encompasses the entire western hemisphere. Our Area spans from northern Canada to Argentina and Chile south of the Americas, the Caribbean and two islands from Africa (because their national language is Portuguese, they are assisted by the Americas). We thank God because we now are one strong family composed of 27 nations including 5 target nations and 7 nations in the pioneering process.

Even though a large percent of the people in the Americas claim the Chris-tian faith, youth today are in a critical stage. Social problems like families split-ting apart, the increase of atheism, and the increase of street gangs make it even more important for Youth for Christ to reach out to youth in the Americas. Our nations along with our partners, staff members and volunteers reach out to youth via school programmes, sports programmes in the neighbourhoods, and even with camps where they get to expe-rience Jesus in a real way.

Thanks to God and the work of our team, last year more than fifty thousand youth responded to the gospel and more than twenty-eight thousand are in the process of discipleship and spiritual growth.

GOD IS DOING GREATER THINGS Since he was a young boy, Nahum faced life alone. He lost both of his parents when he was a child. It was tough growing up without a warm hug from his mother and good advice from his father.

Nahum later became part of a gang and was heading in the wrong direction until one day YFC visited his school. He was invited to a camp where fun activities and the Word of God were shared. Nahum was impacted by the way YFC staff and volunteers shared God´s love and how they were so nice and cared for him without knowing who he was. That changed his life forever. The impact was so big that he left the street gangs and became a follower of Christ. Nahum now serves full time as part of the staff at YFC Honduras helping out young people with lives like the one he had been living.

The Asia Pacific Area of YFC stretches from American Samoa in the east across to the western border of Kazakh-stan that borders Russia. North to south it covers Mongolia down to the south-ernmost tip of New Zealand. In this are 57 nations of which YFC is present in 30 with another 5 being targeted for ministry. Asia Pacific contains the two nations in the world with the densest population, India and China, with a combined number of nearly 2.8 billion people. Asia Pacific also contains the nations that comprise the highest Muslim populations, the highest Hindu populations and the highest Buddhist populations, the largest communist block and the most religions and deities anywhere in the world. Additionally, there are over 3,200 distinct languages across the nations. Many island nations are separated by thousands of miles of ocean and still many others have closed borders. Boundaries and barriers to the gospel exist at every conceivable level.

Persecution of Christianity is also clearly evident in many forms across vast swathes of this Area. Death, imprison-ment, family rejection and harassment are ever present. Yet, by the grace of God our faithful staff, led by the Holy

Spirit, defies despair and fear and continues to find avenues to reach the young people of this Area with the message of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Being culturally appropriate and ministering in difficult settings has meant that the models we use are almost as diverse as the nations we hope to reach. YFC has always aimed at addressing the four facets of life: physical, emotional, social, and of course, spiritual. Our ministry covers everything including: high tech games festivals, internet ministries, worship events, training and leadership development courses, prayer ministries, Bible study, dance competitions, Chris-tian music performance and production, Christian radio, street work, orphan-ages, drug rehab centres, school seminars, juvenile prison visitation and support, church support, rallies and concerts.

GOD IS DOING GREATER THINGS My name is Goham. As a young teenager, I was living a sinful life, thinking I was doing fine but I wasn’t. I even-tually started working for a drug addict, sold alcohol, started helping with robberies and providing prostitutes.

I met Adeel, who plays on the Youth for Christ cricket team. He became my friend, then one day Adeel said, “I’m going to play cricket. How about coming with me?” I laughed and answered, “You know I’m not a cricketer — I don’t even like it.” But he convinced me. There I met many Christian young men and boys. I laughed as they sang Christian songs, prayed and listened to the Bible before and after games. What a strange place for these things! Then a YFC leader named Andrew talked with me. He didn’t reject me but became a friend.

Once I was sitting alone with Andrew while the cricketers played a YFC tournament. Andrew shared the gospel with me. God was working in my life. I confessed my sins and trusted Jesus to be my Saviour. Andrew and I spent time praying right there. Now I was the strange one praying at the cricket grounds!

My heart was glad and God changed me. He helped me stop my immoral activities. Now I work in a factory and volunteer with YFC, showing Christian movies in rural villages. I will always be thankful for YFC Pakistan and Andrew!

EMENA is the Area where tensions are always just under, and quite often, above the surface. YFC EMENA is working in 32 nations in an Area of more than 55 nations. We have ministry in Britain, France and the Netherlands with a history of more than 70 years. But also ministries that have just started like Belgium, Syria, Ireland and Sweden.

This is the world where YFC EMENA works to spread the good news of God’s love. Our strategic goals are:

1. Building Sustainability There are three focused trainings for

boards about good governance so that our YFC ministry shows accountability. We teach our EMENA leaders to find financial resources in their own coun-tries if possible. Our encouragement is to not just rely on others, but create growing sustainability. It is also great to see how nations are supporting each other. We organised a network meeting with the Fundraisers from EMENA and shared our best-practices. We also orga-nise coaching programmes for different regions.

2. Building Bridges between YFC Ministries

Our aim is to have a treasure of resources spread all over the area. The strength of YFC is that we strongly adapt to national youth cultures. The weakness is that countries easily are unaware of what other nations can offer. We bring the leaders of programmes from different countries together and have them teach

and learn from each other. Programmes are translated and made more inter-cultural. Important ministries are local centres, sports projects, discipleship and evangelism, day care centres, and church resources. We are preparing a vision trip with local centres of YFC Britain and the Netherlands with YFC in Russia.

3. Building ONE YFC through communications Each month we have our digital EMENA Newsletter that we send to our nations

and supporters.

4. Building our Area Team and Prayer We work with an Area team of six people to support nations in their different

stages of development. Together with WakeUp Deborah we published the booklet Faith, Prayer & Teenagers.

In 2018 we have plans to target more start-up nations, training boards, devel-oping a “Train the Trainer” course for Arabic-speaking nations and organising regional meetings. We praise Him for opportunities of reaching a new generation with the gospel and thank Him for His daily blessings.

GOD IS DOING GREATER THINGS During a cage session, Liam shared how he came to know Jesus and asked the young people if they had any questions. A girl named Siobhan asked some great ques-tions. It seemed like she was really searching. As the night progressed, a few of our staff had short conversations with her about life and faith. Siobhan thought God didn’t really like her and that when He created her He made a mistake. Another member of YFC staff, Valerie was able to reassure Siobhan how God had created her with purpose and precision. He wanted a relationship with her. As an expert sculptor chips away at the marble to reveal its inner beauty, God would continue this work in her. After the conversations, Siobhan took the first step in surrendering her life to Jesus and received Christ.

DIGITAL FIELD TEAM

The Digital Field Team, led by Martin Ainsworth and Seth Binford, serves the Field by helping nations share their story and evangelise power-fully through digital media. Working with the Area and the individual nation, the Digital Field Team (DFT) trains and mentors the national or regional team(s) on good video, audio, photo and social media practices — that strategically tell their ministry and evangelistic story to youth, staff and donors. The DFT has spent much of their time in 2017, and now through 2018, with nations who have ministry to refugees. They have been teaching and training those nations on how to capture and share what they are doing, how they are serving this important group of people, how God is changing lives through it all and what the ministry needs are currently — and going forward.

GLOBAL PRAYER TEAM

The Global Prayer Team, led by Adam Shepski, serves the Field by modelling, training and resourcing YFC nations who seek to develop their praying culture in interces-sion, staff care and evange-lism. From leading a global focus monthly to pray and fast for the youth of the world to know Jesus, to weekly prayer requests and thoughts on furthering a national prayer culture, to videos and online resources, this team is consistently leading us to fall on our knees before the Throne! And further, while this team leads trainings and conferences to equip and resource YFC nations, the ability to see those words and thoughts in action is to walk the streets with them as they reach out, pray FI

for and share the gospel to all those who are receptive. To watch God work in the hearts and minds of people as this team takes prayer and the gospel into the cities, streets and towns — is truly life changing.

GLOBAL TRAINING TEAM AND COACHING

The Global Training Team, led by Mike Manna, serves the Field by coordinating a team of Area Training Directors, who collaborate together on delivering vital training across the globe. This team recommends and develops best practices and training resources for YFC national directors, regional directors, staff and volunteers which support the YFC vision,

strategic focus, and core values. This team works to provide practical, but also deep and meaningful training. In some cases, the vital tools and training done by this team might be the only training to which some of our amazing YFC workers have access. Further, our Coaching Ministry, led by Chris Harding, serves the Field by coming alongside YFC Staff and Leadership to help them discover God’s agenda for their life and ministry… and then cooperating with the Holy Spirit to see dreams, goals and actions become reality. Our Coaching Ministry is the teeth that puts action to ministry vision, knowledge and training.

MEMBER CARE TEAM

The Member Care Team, led by Graham Barker, serves the Field by holistically caring for the national director and their family. Member Care Chaplains seek

to walk alongside and provide spiritual and emotional support to the national directors and their dependents in their designated region, to ensure they withstand the stresses and challenges that occur within ministry life. A fair number of ministry workers leave the field due to burn-out, co-worker conflict, family struggles and stresses, overall fatigue and loneliness. So our Member Care Chaplains seek to connect with and provide both spiritual and practical care for those staff members (and family) to whom they are privileged to serve and minister.
