The Sundays after Pentecost comprise the longest season of the

Church Year. After spending a half-year looking at Christ’s life for us,

we now spend a half-year looking at Christ’s life in us. By the power

of the Spirit working through the Word and Sacraments, Christ

produces spiritual growth within us. That growth is symbolized by

the green colors that drape the church for much of this season.

God Hears What does life in God’s world look like for the elderly Christian, homebound

due to weak legs? What about the sick one, lying in a hospital bed? How about the one

who sits in prison? Can their Christian life make an impact? Today we see one way all of

them and all of us can have a deeply meaningful day in God’s world no matter your

circumstances, namely, by God’s gift of prayer. C.S. Lewis once said that through prayer

God gives us the dignity of causality. To put it another way, the prayers of believers make

a difference! So God invites the Christian to boldly pray for all things and God promises

to hear those prayers. The Prayer of the Day beautifully centers worship for this Sunday:

God’s ears are open; let us then boldly ask for the blessings he promises.

Over the course of the summer we will take a closer look at our lives as Christians Living in

God’s World. While life in God’s world is beautiful, it is not without its difficulties and

challenges. Yet, we take comfort and find strength in the fact that the God who did all the

work for us in procuring our salvation, continues to be hard at work in our lives every

single day. Our worship will follow this pattern:

INVOCATION

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name;

C: make known among the nations what he has done.

M: Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

C: his love endures forever.

M: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

C: giving thanks to God the Father through him.

2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Chronicles 16:8; 1 Chronicles 16:34; Colossians 3:17

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear

children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment.

Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.

In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child.

But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray:

Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love.

Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death

of our Lord Jesus Christ, has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May

God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

The rite of Holy Baptism may take place here.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

After a brief introduction we join in singing the following twice.

Based on: Psalm 30:12; Joel 3:10; 2 Corinthians 8:9

your ears are always open to the prayers

of your humble servants,

who come to you in Jesus’ name.

Teach us always to ask according to your will

that we may never fail to obtain the blessings you have promised;

through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON Genesis 18:20-32

20 Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and

Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21 that I will

go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the

outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know." 22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but

Abraham remained standing before the LORD. 23 Then

Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away

the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty

righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away

and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous

people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill

the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the

wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all

the earth do right?" 26 The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in

the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their

sake." 27 Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have

been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing

but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is

five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because

of five people?"

"If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it." 29 Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are

found there?"

He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it." 30 Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me

speak. What if only thirty can be found there?"

He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there." 31 Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to

speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?"

He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it." 32 Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me

speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?"

He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

Abraham’s continued pressing of God would have seemed presumptuous to any earthly master in

the ancient near East. Yet Abraham was as bold as this when talking to God! Our confidence is the

same as we boldly come before our heavenly Father’s throne seeking his free and faithful grace.

VERSE OF THE DAY

Cantor: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Refrain

John 6:68

This version of the verse of the day is sung in what is called “echo style,” very prominent in the early

Christian church. A cantor sings. The congregation then echoes the cantor.

Refrain

Page 10: GOD HEARS€¦ · 02/07/2020  · Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness

SECOND LESSON Colossians 2:6-15

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as

Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and

built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were

taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through

hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on

human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of

this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in

bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to

fullness. He is the head over every power and

authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a

circumcision not performed by human hands. Your

whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you

were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with

him in baptism, in which you were also raised with

him through your faith in the working of God, who

raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the

uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with

Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled

the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood

against us and condemned us; he has taken it away,

nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the

powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of

them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Why can we be so bold in prayer? God has given us the fullness of Christ. In him we have been made forgiven

children of God who have every right and encouragement to ask of God—as a child would ask his dear father.

HYMN OF THE DAY Lord, Teach Us How to Pray Aright

SERMON Luke 11:1-13

1One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he

finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to

pray, just as John taught his disciples." 2He said to them, "When you pray, say:

"'Father,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come.

3Give us each day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins,

for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.' " 5Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend,

and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me

three loaves of bread, 6because a friend of mine on a journey

has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' 7"Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The

door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I

can't get up and give you anything.' 8I tell you, though he will

not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet

because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as

much as he needs. 9"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek

and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to

him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will

give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give

him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how

to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your

Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Jesus teaches disciples of all time for what to pray – blessings spiritual and physical – and

how to pray – with great boldness. Why? Because we are coming before our Father’s

throne of grace knowing that our dear Father always hears and blesses his dear children.

Page 13: GOD HEARS€¦ · 02/07/2020  · Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness

CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.
