Brother V.E. Howard was a pioneer on Radio for more than 35 years. He presented countless messages of truth in a time when truth was very much needed.
Many remember his radio sermons and a great many responded positively to them.
Perhaps, you are not familiar with the name as he passed from this life over 14 years ago. Long before the much vaunted TV commercial selling cell phones, Brother Howard was known for 3 familiar words.
He presented message after message filled with the gospel.
Many would listen to hear the words of truth. They also paid particular attention as they wait to hear these three words. Sometime in his message, when he was ready to bring home the point, he would say in a low, slow deliberate tone “are you listening”.
This was a very effective style. Brother Howard knew it did not matter what he said, if others were not listening, it was to no avail.
Indeed listening, a prime requisite in understanding, is essential in any conversation.
Jesus was extremely affective due
to His ability to listen. Luke 24 is a prime example of Jesus listening. Take a few minutes & read verses 13-21. Jesus was listening & asking questions & listening for to the answer.
Listening happens in the moment. When we find ourselves looking for answers rather than listening for the meaning we lose sight of what can truly help.
So when we converse with others “are WE Listening?”

Skeletons September 17, 2017

September 07, Thursday, middle of the day; I had visited my loved one at Brookside Re-Hab & Nursing Center and was on my way back home. This nice sunny day, I took the longer way around Warrenton and had stopped for the traffic light at the Blue Ridge Orthopedic Center, while the light did its changes I glanced over at the Blue Ridge parking lot. There was parked a brand new JEEP WRANGLER; I wondered what it cost, but why have a skeleton on the front bumper. Was this a statement or a rush to beat the proliferation of Halloween objects. Walgreen already had ON SALE skeleton pillows and dolls from the movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Yes! I have already heard on the NEWS comments about the coming Halloween & Christmas season but why try to rush the holidays.
Detroit once had an Indian head on a Pontiac and Kaiser had a buffalo. Was it time to have a skeleton on every car? I would rather think most of us would rather have a flag or something comforting to see on the hood.
The light turned green and I was on my way. I would have liked to see the JEEP owner to see if he/she was wearing a wreath of garlic. I think you would have to take such precautions if you had a skeleton on your vehicle. My father would not have gone with the
skeleton adornment; he would chide me if I took liberties with such and mention death was not a joke to laugh at or snicker.
As a child, holidays were waited for and enjoyed when they arrived. Something to gather a memory or two from and recall and laugh about until the next one came around. Halloween brings
in billions and is second to Christmas, at the moment; soon, the dark side just might take over and provide more jobs and sticky candy. When I was young I saw clearly all the reasons for holidays, now that I am much older the looking glass is a little cloudy but I am not one to spoil others' pleasure. Halloween is in the fall season and the time of bringing in the harvest, or it was. Corn was
shocked and pumpkins were given a carved face; it was time to enjoy because a hard winter might just be around the corner; time to hang a skeleton on the front door to scare away disease and pestilence. Will it work? Who knows, better to try it and amaze your friends!
"Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness, Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eves; Waiting for the harvest and the time of reaping, We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves." (Knowles Shaw, 1874)
