You need to set both long term and short term goals s well as goals for practice and competition.

Second:

the best mix of goals include process goals, performance goals, and outcome goals. Outcome goals are most effective at creating practice motivation by reminding athletes of long term accomplishments they are striving to attain.

Third:

Olympic athletes report that their 3 most important goals are : having fun, winning, and improving performance. ( What will help you to win or improve your performance? Technique, Strategy, mental skills, conditioning)

Fourth: Level of difficulty- Specific, challenging goals

lead to higher levels of task performance, than do your best, easy goals or no goals. Harder goals produce higher levels of task performance than do easy goals.

Examples: Athletes who set themselves higher performance goals-like finish the race at a faster time and also set themselves higher outcome goals ( finish the race in a higher rank order) showed a higher performance than athletes who did not set such high personal goals.

Perfectionist personal standards do not undermine but enhance athletes performances

Perfectionistic personal standards in athletes may form part of a healthy pursuit of excellence and may help you achieve a higher level of performance.

Seventh:

In some cases individuals given unrealistically high goals actually perform higher (but never lower) than individuals given more realistic goals.

Eighth:

Improvement and success are the most important purposes for setting goals. Goals should be regularly reevaluated, as this serves as a constant source of performance feedback and information- which is very important for continued effort and success. You must reevaluate your goals regularly! Goals often have to be adjusted according to your progress to maintain optimum motivation throughout your journey.
