What’s Inside:
Rabbi’s Message: What is Mussar ?
With the Yamim Nora-im (Days of Awe) just behind us, and the joyous festival of Sukkot just ahead, we praise God who accepts sincere prayer for t’shuvah (repentance) and forgives us. We begin the new year with hope and confidence. We may have made promises to ourselves and others or set new goals toward personal improvement. What can help us working on these promises and goals? Mussar. Meaning “instruction,” Mussar is a treasury of Jewish teachings and spiritual practices developed over centuries to help us elevate our character. Author and Mussar teacher, Alan Morinis explains that it is a “… path of spritual self-development. It means working on yourself, but not for the sake of yourself.” The goal, Morinis continues, is to dedicate yourself “… to be of service and to hold the needs of the other in your heart even as you work on yourself….” I began talking about Mussar on Rosh Hashanah. Now, I invite you to join me and others as we begin our study and practice of Mussar at our Neshamah Nosh sessions on Sunday mornings. At each session, we will delve into another “soul-trait” (like humility and patience). Our classes will be real group learning. As I began my learning this summer, I soon realized that I am not qualified to lecture on Mussar; I am a novice, but I can learn with you—and I look forward to it. In this way, we can nourish and fortify the promises, inspiration and progress we have felt since the High Holy Days. I hope you will join our Mussar discussion group. Here is the title of the book I MORE than strongly urge you to acquire and the dates for these discussion groups: Everyday Holiness, by Alan Morinis. Published by Trumpeter, 2008. When: Sundays: 10/22, 11/12, 12/10, 1/28/18, 2/25, 3/11 & 4/22 What time: 10:00 for bagels and schmooze / 10:15 we begin! Where: Our Beit Midrash / Library. Rabbi Steve

Presidents Appeal September 2017 It is my privilege and honor to give my High Holy Day speech to you, and of course, my wish is for all to have a sweet, happy and healthy 5778. Whether you are members here or guests, we are so pleased you are able to join us today to celebrate both Shabbat and Yom Kippur… a double mitzvah. I have a story to share that relates to the Torah portion… A restaurant owner was so sure that his bartender was the strongest man around, that he was offering a standing $1800 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass. Anyone who could squeeze even ONE more drop of juice would win the money. Many people had tried over time; weight lifters, construction workers, karate instructors, but nobody could do it. One day, this scrawny little Jewish guy came into the restaurant, and said in a meek and squeaky voice, “I’d like to try.” After the laughter had died down, the bartender said, “OK”, grabbed a lemon and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the Jewish fellow. The crowd’s laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and 6 drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender asked the little Jewish man, “ What do you do for a living?” With a gleam in his eye, he replied, “ I work for the Jewish National Fund.” This may be funny, at the expense of our good friends at the Jewish National Fund, but WE do not have to feel “squeezed” when asked to give of our resources or ourselves – consider it a gentle hug. As President, I’ve seen and am awed by the many ways in which members of our congregation, who feel passionately about this community, continue giving so generously of themselves. I can start with the Executive Board and Board of Trustees who are all involved with various committees and contribute countless hours to keep the building and events, up and running. There are those involved with our fundraising, whether on a weekly basis or involved with creating new and exciting events who continue to need more workers to get these accomplished. I know Bingo, our biggest regular fundraiser is in need of more volunteers. We have the Women of BAS, a newly energized arm of the temple. Adult Education has been reenergized as well. There are so many new things to offer you…. As you sit here, ask yourselves, what role might I play? What are the gifts that I can bring to this community? How can I fulfill the commandment of Tzedakah-of righteous giving? One way is to support our annual appeal. Please take your pledge card and consider an amount that feels right for YOU. Whatever it is, please commit to SOMETHING. Dues have remained the same; Religious school tuition has remained the same. However, our bills continue to rise. Giving is an affirmation of the importance not only of this congregation, but the Reform Jewish community at large. Thank you and Shalom Arlene Gaona President
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
BAS Religious School is off to another great year. Students were welcomed back by Our Principal, Rabbi Gold and the teachers who have spent many successful years teaching our children on Sunday, September 10. Our first fundraiser, Cookie Dough, was launched by Melanie Giudice, and we expect to please everyone’s sweet tooth while we raise needed funds for our Religious School. Rabbi Gold has planned events for our students in the Sukkah built by temple members. We are looking forward to eating and learning in the sukkah. Please join us on Wednesday October 4th for a Pot Luck Erev Sukkot dinner at 6:00PM followed by Erev Sukkot Service at 7:00PM
Senior Youth Group The October meeting will be 6:30, Oct. 24th in Mrs. Zirin's classroom. Snacks will be served. Bring your dues check for $18 and a non-perishable canned food item. November19th in the afternoon Knockerball & More at Eatontown Mall. More information will follow but save the date. It is an awesome, fun place. Our meeting on the 26th of Oct. was attended by 5 and we look forward to more attendees at the next meeting so we can hold elections and get more input as to things group would like to do. I have some great ideas and want to get your comments on them before going forward. Connie A. Zirin [email protected]

On Sunday, September 17, at least 50 women gathered for a breakfast of bagels, lox, muffins, and salads and to build a new organization called
The Women of Beth Am Shalom.
Based on the premise that women need women at all stages of our lives, the group hopes to appeal to the interests and needs of the 21st century woman and offer a
sense of community and friendship while remaining a service arm of temple. As one of our newest members wrote, “Women are nurturers and born leaders, they have
much influence on family.” In this case I will consider all members of Temple as “the family,” as my family.
Together, there is so much good that we can do. Our goal is to have quarterly
events, all related to our Jewish heritage and to being women, respecting all of the roles that we play. But for now there is much work to be done and we are looking for
volunteers. We MUST revise that Sisterhood constitution and create a document applicable to our organization. Do we want to be a member of the WRJ, Women of
Reform Judaism? Can you help to plan an event?
Please call me at home, (732) 505-8204. Step up and take a leadership role to improve our community for all its members.
We are hoping for 100% membership in the Women of BAS. If you have not already joined The Women of BAS, please consider completing the membership applications that will be mailed out later this month. Together let’s make this the best year ever.
Fran, Shelly and I wish each of you a good year. May 5778 be a healthy, happy and
successful year for all of us.

CEMETERY COMMITTEE Dear Friends, We at Beth Am Shalom are writing you today in regards to our cemeteries, Beth Olam Memorial Park in Lakewood and Toms River Jewish Cemetery in Toms River. As you are well aware, Beth Olam Memorial Park is in dire need of restoration and beautification. Though much has been done to try and maintain this cemetery, it just hasn’t been enough with the limited funds we have. It has been decided that those of us with loved ones buried there deserve a more serene environment. With this in mind, our cemetery committee has moved forward with a more aggressive plan to rejuvenate the grounds:
1.Grave Stones that have sunk below grade level are being raised to ground level. 2.Starting in late September, a fertilization & seeding program will be started. 3.Irrigation system has been fixed and watering times adjusted to meet needs.
The above courses of action are quite costly and will soon deplete our cemetery fund. In order for us to continue to upkeep our cemeteries and maintain the need of our dearly departed…WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Funds are sorely lacking and the cemetery Committee is asking for your help in accomplishing our goals. We are asking for donations to be made to the cemetery fund, in multiples of $18, chai! These donations can be made on a monthly basis or in one larger amount to be specified to the cemetery fund. It is up to you and up to us to make the cemetery a place to be proud of. Thank you for your generosity.
