A Note from the Principal
January 2019
Hello All,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
New Year is a time of resolutions- a fresh start to try and make improvements in our lives. Unfortunately, most fall by the wayside after we get
overcome by the happenings in our day-to-day lives. At least, I know that is often true for me.
It occurs to me that this is a nice tie in to the “resolutions” we make at the beginning of every New (school) Year here at Barkley. We do not
call them resolutions; we call them goals. To ensure that they do not “fall by the wayside,” we continually track our progress to make sure we
are pursuing our “resolutions” in ways that are effective.
In DODEA, we are required to have at least four resolutions aka GOALS. Two of these goals are to address academics and two are to address
the (Barkley) organizational operations. In other words, these organizational goals are non-academic goals that focus on overall school im-
provement.
Barkley’s goals are summarized as follows:
Goal 1: Literacy (ACADEMIC)
All students in grades K-3 will increase their reading achievement … as measured by specific grade level expectations for the “Independent Level” from SY17-18 to SY19-20. All students in grades 4-5 will increase their reading achievement … as measured by specific grade level year-end proficiency ranges from SY17-18 to SY19-20. Goal 2: Math (ACADEMIC)
Barkley Elementary students in grades 3-5 will increase their achievement in mathematics on the DoDEA CCRS Summative Assessments … in SY 19-20. Goal 3: Professional Learning Communities/ Focused Collaboration (NON-ACADEMIC) Barkley Elementary School PLC Rating Score on the Shared Vision Indicator will move from the “Developing” stage in SY 17-18 to “Sustaining” stage by SY 19-20…
Goal 4 – School Climate & Culture (NON-ACADEMIC) The score on the Teacher Expectation component will improve as measured on the Teacher Climate and Culture Assessment by SY 19-20… We work on tracking and addressing goals DAILY. We also track some data focusing on specific school/grade level assessments at specified times during the school year. On early-release Tuesdays, our professional development addresses these goals, with the focus usually on the ACADEMIC GOALS, but not always. Our teachers also meet weekly in teams with admin to address classroom assessment findings and de-velop ways to address INDIVIDUAL student needs. NON-ACADEMIC goals are also addressed at these meetings. All of these meetings are “guided” by our school leadership team and our team leaders who also meet with admin outside normal school hours. In addition, we have teacher teams that address specialized areas such as Special Education, Gifted Education and Student Support. We would not only welcome, but be grateful for PARENT PARTICPATION in the school leadership time. Please let admin or your child’s teacher know if you are interested in being a positive change agent here at Barkley. You will NOT be sorry. Ted Turnipseed, Principal BES

What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to keep doing something in spite of obstacles. People who persevere show steadfastness in do-ing something despite how hard it is or how long it takes to reach the goal. Perseverance -- sometimes called "grit" -- is the great leveler. You don't have to be the wealthiest, have the most friends, or be the smartest kid in the class; if you persevere, you can reach your goals. You can help inspire perseverance by al-lowing kids to experience failure -- in a safe, supported envi-ronment. When kids need to recover from a setback, think their way through a challenge, and try again, they develop grit. Resource provided by: www.commonsensemedia.org

SAFETY
January 2019 Barkley Elementary Bike Safety
Happy New Year!
We are so happy to have the students back with us. Kids being kids, it was brought to our atten-
tion that we have several students who are riding bicycles and scooters without a helmet. We
have also noticed kids giving friends a ride standing on their rear tire hub. One of our “super he-
roes” was even spotted wearing a cape flowing over the rear wheel. Please ensure that children
are wearing their helmets as directed by base policy. It is important also that the helmet strap is
fastened. We are going to assign someone to monitor our bike rakes so that we can do what is
needed on our end. Please help us by reviewing bicycle safety and base rules of the road.
Thank you for helping us keep your kids safe. Have a great day!!

A Reminder from Coach Voorhees and Coach Scerbo “Always Remember to Wear Your
Tennis Shoes to PE”
Notes from Nurse Rayburn I am seeing a high number of Fifth Disease cases here at Barkley Elementary. Fifth disease causes a distinctive red rash on the face that makes a child appear to have a "slapped cheek." Fifth disease begins with a low fever, headache, and mild cold-like symptoms (like a stuffy or runny nose). These symptoms pass, and the illness seems to be gone until the rash ap-pears a few days later. The rash is due to an immune system reaction that happens after the infection has passed, someone with fifth disease is most contagious before the rash appears. Kids usually don't spread the infection once they have the rash. The DoDEA health services guide states that the student will only be excluded from school when a fever is present. The stu-dent must be free of fever for 24 hrs. There is no vaccine to prevent fifth disease, and no real way to prevent spreading the virus because a person usually isn't contagious by the time the rash appears. Washing hands well and often is always a good idea because it can help prevent the spread of many infections. The flu vaccine is a required immunization for students attending all DoDEA schools. Proof of the flu immunization must be submitted to me, the school nurse. Parents who do not want their child immunized against the flu must follow DoDEA' s established practice of obtaining the request for waiving the immunization. I have the form which you may pick up from me in the student clinic. Your child must be compliant with either the immunization or the appropriate waiver paperwork by the third quarter in order to avoid any interruptions in their attendance. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me here at the school. 270-640-1205.

Pet Policy “It will be a violation of Board Policy to possess an animal in a Fort
Campbell Schools building or on a Fort Campbell Schools campus during school
hours or activities, including drop-off or pick-up of students before and after school.
School hours are defined as being from 45 minutes prior to the beginning of school
in the morning and 45 minutes after the end of school. School activities often take
place outside of these hours. Exceptions to this policy are certified harnessed or
leased service animals or animals present for an approved educational purpose. In
all instances, pets must be handled according to all installation policies. Fort Camp-
bell Schools reserves the right to have any bothersome animal removed from its
grounds. Owners are responsible for having their pets leashed or caged and for re-
moving any waste materials from school grounds.”

BARKLEY ELEMENTARY
The school is named after
Alben William Barkley, who
was Vice President of the Unit-
ed States (1949-1953) under
President Harry S. Truman. He
was born in Graves County, KY
on Nov. 24, 1877 and died sud-
denly while making a speech at
Lexington, VA on April 30,
1956.
The initial structure was com-
pleted in October 1955. The
first expansion came in 1958.
Over the years the school
evolved from kindergarten-first
classes to grade six. The pre-
sent structure, last
addition completed in 2003,
houses children from ages
three through grade five.
The faculty and staff at Barkley
live by the ABC’s of our vision.
We believe that children re-
quire a sense of belonging and
a spirit of community to be-
come efficient learners. Our
school promotes a caring envi-
ronment
coupled with high
academic expectations. We
believe in our students!

CHILD FIND
Child Find is an outreach program that actively seeks to lo-
cate and identify children and youth from birth through
age twenty-one, who may have developmental delays or ed-
ucational disabilities and may be in need of special educa-
tion and/or related services.

Don’t forget to send your pull-tabs to school. Barkley Elementary School is participating in the Pull Tab Collec-tion Challenge Contest. By simply saving this tiny pull tab, we are helping raise thousands of dollars to support the families of seriously ill or injured children receiving medical treatment at Nashville area hospitals. Thank you to the families that sent pull-tabs through out the year.
