HAVE AN EVENT YOU WOULDLIKE FOR US TO COVER? Let us know at [email protected]!?

HELP US HELP YOUR KIDS“A picture says a thousand words,” as the old saying goes. But a picture with the perfect caption or description of what’s happening in the photo sayseven more. Each month, our photographer, Mark McCoy, shoots so many pictures that are so good, often capturing an instant in time when a young competitor is at his or her best. The only problem is that unless we have a team roster – and you can make out the numbers on the uniform – we don’t have any idea about the person’s identity. Why is this important? Giving context to the photos is important. We want to tell what’s going on in a shot as well as show the action in the picture. Just as importantly, all of the photographs that are in the magazine, and tens of thousands more, are available via our Web site, www.goteammagazine.com. If we don’t have a name to go along with a face, it can be more challenging for family and friends to find their favorite young competitor’s photo using the site’ssearch functions. Here’s where we ask for help, particularly from the coaches in the area. Each month, we’ll send out an email with select photographs to the coaches we meet at the various events we attend. All we ask is that you provide us with a name and a brief anecdote, story or item of interest to go along with the photo. It only takes a moment. We have to thank the coaches who have already helped us with this; your efforts went a long way to providing a fuller, more comprehensive picture of our young competitors than those thousand words told in the pictures themselves.

THIS MONTH WE DEPART FROM THE NORM A BIT TO TELL ABOUT a father/son coaching duo. Both are volunteers within the Harrison baseball system; the father, Charlie Causey, is an assistant on the Varsity team. Son Ryan is the head coach of the Harrison Cub team, which is comprised of 7th and 8th graders from Harrison’s feeder schools. Dwayne Causey, Ryan’s older brother, is also into coaching as Ryan’s assistant on the Cub team. I asked Charlie and Ryan the same questions while the other was out of earshot:

Dylan Gibbs Managing

Editor

CHARLIE CAUSEYGT: What motivates you as a coach?CC: I try to motivate the kids, keep ‘em out of trouble. I got involved [in coaching] when my kids got old enough to play, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have Coach Rice (Andrew, Harrison’s Varsity skipper) have me be part of the team.

What is the most important thing you want the kids to learn? To respect the other players and other people. Try to have the right attitude. Most of them won’t play ball all their life, so they need to get their education.

What does baseball teach a young personabout life?If they get the right attitude, it can teach them a lot. I spent 21 years in the Army, and I’ll have fun with ‘em and say, ‘This is what we did in the Army; you don’t want to do this…’

What’s been your most proud moment as a coach?Back in 2000, when we went to the State Final Championship Game. I wish we would’ve won, but that was the first time the school had ever been there. It’s just something you dream of as a little kid. I was able to be there as a coach, and I loved every minute of it.

Who would you rather have on your team: A super-talented kid who’s a little difficult, or an average player who’ll do anything you ask?The average player. [The really talented player] can bring the whole team down.

Who do you personally admire most as a fellow coach?Coach Andy Rice. He’s taught me a lot. He played at Memorial, then he went down to Murray State and played and then he got drafted by the Houston Astros. He’s been at Harrison for 19 years.

GT: What motivates you as a coach?RC: Helping out the kids. My job is to get them ready for the high school level. They’re not playing on a little Pony field anymore; they’re playing on regular high school field. So when they get up to Freshman or Reserve ball, they’ll know what to do.

What is the most important thing you want the kids to learn? To have fun. It doesn’t have to be serious. You can only control what you can control; you can control your attitude – if you get thrown out, you get thrown out. If you didn’t hustle, you can control that.

What does baseball teach a young person about life?Patience. It’s a game of patience. You’ve got to wait for that pitcher; you’ve got to identify stuff. In the outfield, you might be out there for five minutes; you might be out there for 20 minutes.

RYAN CAUSEYWhat’s been your most proud moment as a coach? In ’08, we won it all. We didn’t start out good, but we came back and we won the Cub Championship my first year coaching – it’s not all me – it’s the kids.

Who would you rather have on your team: A super-talented kid who’s a little difficult, or an average player who’ll do anything you ask?The average player. The kid that knows everything is already gonna be a pain in the butt and won’t want to be coached. The other kid, you can coach.

Who do you personally admire most as a fellow coach? The coaches out here like Coach Rice and my dad. When we got here [at the Harrison Baseball Fields], it was nothing, and we’ve done a lot of work. They’ve done a lot of work. I enjoy watching them too [the other coaches].

Charlie Causey (L) and son Ryan. Both are coaches withinthe Harrison High School baseball family.

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY KEEP AN EYE ON Mount Vernon Jr. High Schooler Ellen Foster. Ms Foster is an honor student, an excellent multi -sport athlete and was one of a select number of young Americans chosen to represent the United States in internati onal basketball competi ti on as a member of Team USA. The 14-year-old will also be representi ng the US in Switzerland this summer at the presti gious Swiss All Star Tournament. To fi nd out more “behind the numbers,” we chatt ed with Ellen recently.

GT:WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF BEING ON A TEAM?EF: Trusting and learning others’ strengths and weaknesses.

SO ONCE YOU REALLY TRUST YOUR TEAMMATES, YOU CAN ANTICIPATE WHAT THEY’LL DO NEXT?Yeah.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A GAME?I don’t have a fancy routine. I’m pretty pumped before I go into any game. I think that whatever I do or however I do it, I’m going to be the best I can be.

YOU PLAY BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND RUN TRACK; WHICH IS THE MOST CHALLENGING?Probably basketball.

IN THE SENSE THAT IT DOESN’T COME AS EASILY TO YOU OR THAT YOU TRY TO DO EVEN BETTERAT IT?[That I] try to do better.

YOU’RE ALSO AN HONOR STUDENT – HOW DO YOU BALANCE ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS?Academics come before sports, so if I don’t have my homework done, I’ll have to do it before I do my sports.

HOW DO SPORTS HELP YOU OUT IN EVERYDAY LIFE?It teaches me to be a better person; if I can be a good teammate, I can be good in everyday life.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS, CAREER- AND SPORTS-WISE?I want to play in the WNBA someday. I have big goals, I guess.

HOW WERE YOU INVITED TO THE 2010 SWISS ALL STAR TOURNAMENT?I didn’t know about it until I got a letter saying that I’d been invited to an informational meeting [about the event]. Once we got to the meeting, it was more clear; they told us what they wanted, where we could go and everything. There were other places we could choose from; it didn’t have to be the Swiss All Star Tournament. There’s one in the Bahamas… that one [Swiss All Star Tournament] jumped out more than the others.

Ellen’s very proud to be representing her town and her country, and she’s looking forward to further developing her talents at both special events such as the Swiss All Star Tournament and in high school, which she begins in the fall.

Ms. Foster is working hard to find donors and sponsors to help with fees, accommodations and transportation for her trip to Switzerland this summer. If you’d like to help out, here’s how:

Core Value of the Month: FRIENDSHIPFRIENDSHIP:

Finding someone you enjoy spending ti me with and trust. What are the basic points about friendship we can teach our children that will help them start and grow meaningful friendships?

Friendships add meaning to life. From the earliest memories each of us can recall, there are parti cular individuals who defi ne ti mes, places or circumstances in our past. We associate enjoyable ti mes with the people who shared the experience with us. The names of “best” friends may change, but the closeness of shared experiences always remains. Friends add meaning to our lives by their gift of friendship.

The friendship choices we make aff ect us in many ways. Children someti mes att ach a great deal of importance to having a parti cular friend or being included in a certain group. They believe happiness or signifi cance will be achieved through building just the right relati onship. The individuals we wish to call friends may infl uence us to change in some way to become “suitable.” Our response to those pressures is criti cal. The people we include in our inner circle of infl uence—our friends—contribute greatly to our atti tudes, behavior and style of building future relati onships.

Building friendships takes work. Some individuals enter or leave our lives. But the people who endure in our memories are those with whom we invest our ti me and energy to build a friendship. Any relati onship of value to us will require eff ort and determinati on to

consider another person’s interests. Friends loyally endure tough situati ons, spend ti me together, prove they can be trusted, listen to one another’s problems and learn to work through disagreements.

CATCH YOUR CHILD BEING A FRIENDCore Essenti als believes that a key way to help your child internalize the character values being taught is to “catch” them demonstrati ng the value. Here are a few suggesti ons on how you can catch your child, and let him or her know you see them being a friend:

• She helps a new kid in your neighborhood feel welcome.

• He plays well with others.

• She goes out of her way to help others, such as being a friend to someone who seems to be friendless.

These are just a few ways you can catch your child showing friendship. The Core Essenti als Program believes it takes an INWARD atti tude to infl uence OUTWARD behavior. The Program is based on aligning the home and school to teach character.

If you do catch your child being a good friend, we would love to hear about it. Tell us what your child did in a note sent into the school, or an e-mail sent directly to his or her teacher.

“RUNNING FORWARD”We expect to have to bury our parents at some point in our lives, but not during our childhood. Try to imagine the gut wrenching pain and absence of losing a parent while looking forward to what is supposed to be some of the best years of your life and when you will need your parents the most. This is especially true for a daughter needing her mother; left is a void that can never truly be filled.

Despite the tragedy of her mom’s death during her freshman year in high school, Lacey Orth, now a senior at North High School, has become quite an accomplished young woman. She first made Semi State in cross country as well as State in the mile in track her first year in high school. The last time she spoke with her mom was over the phone during city Regionals at Central High School, which naturally Lacey won. Her mom had told her that she loved her and it was at that moment that Lacey recalls “I knew she’d always be there for me in spirit.” Unfortunately, her mom lost her battle with cancer that night and Lacey wasn’t there to say goodbye. Throughout the grieving process, Lacey said there were times that she was angry at herself and with track and field for all time she missed with her mom that was spent running for competition or practice. However, despite the fact that Lacey could have dwelled on what she lost by her mom’s death, such as the talks about guys, shopping for prom dresses, and all the mother/daughter talks that wouldn’t happen right before the big moments in Lacey’s life; she instead gained a sense of purpose to continue to put one foot in front of the other and keep going. Due to the accountability she felt to do something to make her mom proud, because her mom ran at Lacey’s age, she followed through with track. Since that year she has gone on to win many cross country races, especially standing out her sophomore year by winning Sectional, Regional, and All-State. That was enough to get her noticed by Indiana State University, who has given her a full, four year scholarship to attend for track and field. Lacey plans to major

in occupational therapy and go on to become a therapist, but she’s not yet certain about what kind. She said that she gets her biggest support from her family, especially her uncle Mark, who has pushed her to become a stronger athlete and make good decisions. Lacey was dealt a difficult blow at the beginning of her high school years and there are many others that easily would have had made worse decisions instead of accomplishing as much as Lacey has. When asked why she runs, she replied, “I run for my mom.” Now she will be going to college and can continue for another four years running for herathletic muse. -Ashley Brown
