ONcE uPON A TiME…Back in the 1970s Jubilee Arts, an ambitious local community arts group joined forces with artists and performers to inspire the residents of Sandwell through arts projects and activities.Over the years, their efforts and energy created programmes and events that inspired and delighted the many people. One project involved establishing a dedicated place for the community within Sandwell and creating an iconic world-class building for the area that would allow people to create and share their own tales and projects and put the region on the map. It

was this vision which led to the building of The Public.In August, The Public celebrates two years since it fully opened and has so far welcomed over 250,000 visitors who have come along to this fantastic, colourful and fascinating building to explore, create, listen, laugh, dance and have a great time.

We’re proud to be part of Sandwell’s story and excited to present you with our summer programme which shares some of these great stories, allows visitors to share theirs, and begin the process of creating the stories of the future.

From July, we’ll be bringing you The Art of Story – a series of fun, thrilling and moving pieces all about tales, fables and stories. This exciting exhibition features projects by school children from Sandwell who have been working with artists and inspired by the books of best-selling author Allan Ahlberg who was brought up in Oldbury in the 1950s.

Over the summer, families and children will be able to explore stories and story telling through exhibitions, workshops and entertainment.

Over the weekend of the 23 and 24 July don’t miss our spectacular summer holiday launch weekend which will celebrate the Art of Story on the Saturday and a Mela Day on the Sunday featuring stories, music, dance and cuisine – celebrating South Asian Culture.

ThE ART OF STORy – By MulTiSTORy, BlAck cOuNTRy TOuRiNG ANd ThE PuBlic (FREE)6 July-18 SeptemberLocal school children have been working alongside different artists to create their own work in response to the wonderful stories by Allan and Janet Ahlberg.

World famous author Allan Ahlberg grew up and later worked as a school teacher in Oldbury. Together, with his illustrator wife Janet, he has created many popular children’s books which have become part of many people’s childhoods –selling millions of copies across the globe.

This new exhibition will be a celebration of Allan and Janet’s work incorporating the new work created by local children today and with work by Birmingham based company, Stan’s Café. Local artists who have been working to develop the exhibition and the children’s creations are Emma Purshouse, Johnny O’Hanlon, Claude Chambers, Sakab Bashir, John Flitcroft, Heather Wastie and Jonathan Lee. This project is the result of an exciting new partnership between Multistory, Black Country Touring and The Public.

SANdWEll STEPS (FREE)6 July – 18 September Renowned theatre company Stan’s Cafe’s physical puzzle, ‘Sandwell Steps,’ invites you to follow vinyl footprints to re-create the story of a child’s adventure. An imaginative fictional world, fun for all the family.

TOWN SPARROWS – By FRANk WAkEMAN (FREE)6 July – 18 September A fascinating snapshot of the world of the Black Country from days gone by. Made by Frank Wakeman in 1940s, Town Sparrows follows the life of local children – from their day at school to an afternoon playing in Birchley Park. A delightful film of childhood in Oldbury. SuMMER ExhiBiTiON 20116 July – 18 September The Sandwell Arts Festival returns this summer at various locations throughout the borough. Following our open submission call, we’re proud to present a collection chosen by community groups of work by local artists based around the themes of Industry and Industrial Heritage and The Portrait. This exhibition will also feature great work by many local schools – don’t miss the opportunity to come and see work by your friends and family.

TOWN hAll ANd WhO ShOT BROWN OWl? – dESPERATE OPTiMiSTS6 July – 18 September Since 2003, Desperate Optimists have produced a series of films made with local residents and community groups across the UK. The Public is pleased to present two highly acclaimed short films.

Who killed Brown Owl (2004) – a sunny afternoon in an enchanted corner of England is the setting for burnt sunbathers, a rabbit in a boat and a bicycle accident. Filmed over the course of one afternoon

and featuring a volunteer cast of 100 residents from London, the film won the Best Short Film Award at the 58th Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Town hall (2005) was filmed on a hectic day in the stunning surrounds of West Bromwich Town Hall. Each room is booked by groups ranging from sales pitches, children’s disco and teenager’s political rally – presenting issues that mattered to the 200 assembled local residents. Town Hall was funded by the Greets Green Partnership, New Deal for Communities, The Public and Arts Council England.

• Support for new and emerging talent through partnerships with Wolverhampton University and Sandwell College

• Plans to bring Antony Gormley’s The British Field to Sandwell along with other international artists over the next three years.

• Support for young people’s work experience from school placements to six month internships.

• Regular celebrations of cultural and community festivals in response to local demand

Experience a monthly 3 hour gospel music workshop facilitated by one of Birmingham’s principal Gospel practitioners and co-founder of the Academy of Gospel Music – Clyde Forde.

You will be taught lively, vibrant gospel songs and then sing at a live 1 hour performance supported by local gospel artists

Designed by renowned architect Will Alsop and Julian Flannery, the building is an inspiring work of art in its own right that is becoming an icon of the Black Country bringing in visitors from the region and around the world.

Standing in the lobby and looking up you can see an amazing view of the building. For instance, there are no walls from the floor to the ceiling – everything within the building hangs off a series of 26 black columns – starting on the ground floor (which itself slopes at a 2 degree angle) and go all the way to the roof.

Bringing the ‘outside in’ was an original concept of The Public providing the visitor with ‘a walk in the park from inside’.

As you walk around the building you will discover electronic and interactive permanent art including magical waterfalls, ponds, and trees all can be

found inside the building. The ramp provides visitors with a railed promenade winding its way around the galleries with art work along the way to be explored and enjoyed:

Animo – utaniCreate a lifesize story as you are captured on these large screens. Developed with learners from the Lyng Church Project and Sandwell Council’s Adult and Community Services.

Other great areas to explore include the metal ‘rock’ on the outside, and the ground floor provides abstract reflections – to the great delight of all photographers.

Whenever you visit The Public you will find something amazing to see. Its ambience, interior and exterior all change with the seasons and as a day progresses.

The glass skirt around the building gets pinker as the sun moves around the building and if you visit the building at night, its jelly bean windows and pebbles provide a gentle neon glow welcoming visitors for evening entertainments.
