Here are 6 tips to setting up the perfect dining room for family and friends:

1. Define Your Dining Room StyleIf you wish to revamp your dining room or start from scratch, the first thing that you must decide upon is its overall style or the general theme of the room. The theme or style will dictate every single detail that includes the furniture you choose, the decor, and even your cutlery and crockery. When choosing a theme, make sure

it coincides with the general aesthetic of your home or your personal style. Examples of themes could be romantic, modern, traditional, or even ethnic or tribal.

2. FurnitureOnce you’ve decided on the general style of the room, it’s time you purchase that all-important dining set and other furniture. Points to consider include the size of your family, the style of the room, and the function of the rest of the furniture.Traditional style dining rooms ideally

feature a long, rectangular table, mostly made with carved wood, and paired with upholstered chairs. This kind of table allows for the heads of the family to sit on both ends of the table to oversee their children and the other members of the family.

Modern dining areas will look great with a glass top dining table with a chrome base, and paired with leather chairs. For storage of special cutlery and crockery, a freestanding and tall glass-enclosed china cabinet will look great in a traditional dining room.

Written by: Gedion OTIENO

Dining rooms used to be the highlight of any home - where family and friends get together to celebrate special occasions or simply to gather at the end of the day. Today, however, the dining room has been downgraded, becoming a mere place to satisfy hunger in as little time as possible.

In this current day and age, people are too busy with their work or school, and are immersed in gadgets that eliminate opportunities for socialising. It’s about time that this integral part of any home is finally returned to its former glory - and that’s the place to interact with loved ones, where stories are shared, and where children learn etiquette and table manners over a scrumptious meal.

FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDSFOR FAMILY AND FRIENDSSetting Up The Perfect Dining Room

HOMES & GARDEN

Page 11: Go Places Living November Issue 2015

Tip: Do not choose chairs that are too comfortable or else you, your family members, and your guests will become sleepy during meal time.

3. Cutlery and CrockeryThe smallest details of your dining room must be included with your overall theme. Even your cutlery and crockery sets must be taken into consideration when setting up the perfect dining environment for your family and friends. Round, white porcelain plates are perfect for everyday use since they are durable and can stand years of daily use. They also highlight the food, are inexpensive, and are easy to pair with other dinnerware items.

Stainless steel utensils are great for daily use while silver-plated or pure silver cutlery are ideal for special occasions. If you wish to have designs on your plates, they must match the dining room’s style as well. This includes plates with flowers or birds printed on them, or geometric designs for ethnic themed rooms, or plates with gold or silver accents for modern dining areas.

4. LightingThe room’s lighting details create the scene as soon as your guest or a family member walks in. Make sure you are

creating a good ambiance but without becoming too overwhelming that dining is no longer a pleasant experience.During the day, you can open up curtains to allow for natural light to come in, while the room’s lighting can create the perfect eating environment in the evening. Dimmers are great for romantic dinners, while lamps places on the corners of the room create that modern appeal. To create a warm room, use bulbs with a yellow hue. If you want to have a bright room, use blue-tinged bulbs for excellent luminance.

5. DecorDecor is like adding sprinkles to a delicious sundae. Your dining room will never be complete without the proper decor. Chandeliers are very popular today as they create that image of grandeur and class to any room. Place one directly above the center of your dining table for that regal and expensive look. Paintings can bring a colourful relaxing and comforting appeal to the dining room, as well as it goes very well if you have white walls. When having a dinner for two, turn off all the lights and allow the chandelier to create a perfectly romantic setting.

If you wish to paint the room, try the colour red as it stimulates appetite. Flowers as

centerpieces are fantastic choices for that fresh and clean look but make sure their smell is not too overpowering that it reduces your appetite.

If the room has an open concept floor plan, place a carpet in the middle of the dining area to define the space.

6. Remove DistractionsAnd the last tip: remove distractions that reduce your loved ones’ capacity for interaction. Do not place a TV in your dining area as it diminishes socialisation at the table. Make sure your dining area is a place for good food and interaction - disallow the use of gadgets when on the dining table and make sure phones and tablets are muted so notifications do not disrupt your important dinner time.

Remove magazines, books, and better yet, turn of the WiFi when dinner is served. Dinner only takes about 30 minutes so make sure your loved ones agree to your dinner time rules to be able to truly enjoy every delicious meal being served, as well as well as the company of each individual on your table.

If you’re missing out on all the benefits of a good dining room set-up, then it’s about time you get up from that chair and start rearranging or renovating your dining room. Quality time doesn’t mean you have to go on an expensive vacation or another Safari this year. But quality time can be achieved every single day when you set up the perfect dining room for family and friends.

Increase Productivity And Profitability In Your Work Place With Feng Shui

Even though feng shui was primarily used to orient spiritual buildings in an auspicious manner during ancient times, the practice seems to have been incorporated in various other facets of daily life today. While some believe that this 5,000-year-old practice, if implemented at home, can help enhance health and relationships, others say that feng shui, if implemented at the workplace, can help yield positivity, productivity, profitability and prosperity.

Many celebrities and major corporations, including Donald Trump, Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Sting, Tommy Hilfiger, Oprah Winfrey, Disney, SONY, Coca Cola and Wall Street Journal publicly acknowledge their feng shui consultants, without whom they say it would have been impossible to accomplish worldwide success and gain international recognition.

Feng Shui is a Chinese philosophical system that focuses on harmonizing every individual with his or her surrounding environment. While the larger philosophy discusses architecture in metaphoric terms of invisible forces that hold together the entire universe and all of humanity, the term feng shui’, literally translated as wind water’, is typically used to describe the popular practice of positioning objects, especially furniture and buildings, in a manner that is complimentary to the patterns of yin and yang and the flow of Qi. Apart from these two elements, which are believed to have positive as well as negative effects in a given place and at a certain time, there is a third element called ba-gua that plays an equally important role in feng shui. Ba-gua is an octagonal chart depicting the eight points of a compass, with each direction focusing on a different facet of life.

Here are a few tips that can be implemented in the workplace to improve the impact of feng shui:

1. Remove clutterWhen a workplace is unnecessarily cluttered, all the mess is bound to affect one’s mind and in turn, influence his or her regular levels of stress and creativity. Repeatedly rummaging through unorganized material would also lead to wastage of time and energy that could potentially be utilized in a more efficient and productive manner.

2. Avoid direct view of the washroomIrrespective of how well maintained the washroom seems at a workplace, there are innumerable ways in which sanitation can impact a person’s

Written by: John KIBET

Page 21: Go Places Living November Issue 2015

health and consequently his or her positivity as well as productivity. Thus, it is advisable for all workers in the production room to keep the door of the washroom shut at all times or change the direction of their desks and chairs.

3. Discard dead foliage and stagnant waterFlowers and plants that are already dead or may be dying tend to have an adverse effect on Qi, so it is important for all the foliage inside the workplace as well as in its vicinity to be taken care of. Similarly, stagnant water that is unclean or dirty must be done away with from the workplace.

4. Align doors and windows in straight lines According to popular feng shui practices, doors and windows of a workplace must be aligned in straight lines, as this allows Qi to freely travel through the workplace

without any hindrances. Failing to align the openings in such a manner could cause the constant flow of energy to be interrupted and that is not desirable.

5. Avoid sitting in front of the doorSitting in front of the door would cause one to be directly hit by Qi, which according to feng shui consultants is quite unnecessary. Thus, it is recommended for those sitting at the reception to change their seating position in a way that Qi travels through the workplace without hitting against any person.

6. Modify sharp cornersA sharp corner pointing towards the door or furniture in any room is considered hazardous and so it is advisable that one either modifies the sharp corners that are present or conceals them with rounder covers.

7. Avoid sitting directly below lightsAnother common practice in feng shui prohibits one from sitting directly under exposed lights, as this is believed to cause severe discomfort and health problems in the long run. In such a situation, it is best to change the position of the desk and chair.

8. Keep the back to the wallWalls are known to offer a sense of relaxation and safety that apparently has a positive impact on one’s productivity, so employees at the reception as well as in the production room must take special care to ensure their backs are to the wall.

Whether or not feng shui really helps to increase profitability and prosperity may continue to be debated but there is no doubt that if you were to incorporate the above changes in your workplace, they would help make the environment a lot more positive and productive. Such improvements would not only enable you to feel motivated but also allow your employees to spend more time there and focus on generating greater profits.

Another common practice in feng shui prohibits one from sitting directly under exposed lights, as this is believed to cause severe discomfort and health problems in the long run.

A holiday home in Kenya, wheth-er in its stunning mountain rang-es, warm and sunny coasts, tranquil lakes, or in the heart of the city, can provide you with a refuge where you can rejuvenate.

MOUNT KENYAPerhaps no region is more beautiful or symbolic to Ken-yans than Mount Kenya. With its majestic peak second only to Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya is a paradise for those who cherish the outdoors. Wake up every morning revital-ized by the crisp mountain air. Many beautifully furnished holiday homes are available in the immediate vicinity of the mountain, providing imme-diate access to extensive hiking and mountain climbing,

camping, kayaking, fly fishing, horse riding and you could take up a hobby like golf. The terrain of the Mount Kenya region spans both grassland, forest, and moun-tain steppe, giving you an almost endless area in which to explore and play.

DIANI BEACHLounge in comfort day in, day out on a long stretch of white sand at Diani Beach. Long cherished for their world-class resorts, Diani Beach will immediately wash away the aches and pains of long workdays. Coupled with an extensive list of local activities such as golfing, scuba diving, and kite surfing, Diani Beach is the ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.Numerous cottages and villas, many featuring exclusive beachfront access, offer a relaxing reprieve from the rest of the world. This is a place where you can get lost in your own world, either alone with your thoughts or spend a romantic time with a loved one.

LAKE NAIVASHALake Naivasha is a tranquil inland oasis situated in a sea of emerald green forest. It’s a place where local fauna such as flamingo go to relax - and you can too. Relaxing by the lakeside with a good book and a glass of wine, you’ll wonder if there’s a more peaceful place on earth. As the sun begins to dip behind the mountains that ring the lake, you can enjoy the splendid show of light danc-ing across the lake.Cottages aplenty dot the shoreline of Lake Navaisha, and you too can own a slice of this secluded paradise. Many of the cottages feature elegant, quaint gardens

and plenty of patio space to sit and enjoy the sounds of the lake.

NAIROBIYes, even the capital can provide a place for relaxing and recuperating. If you have music in your soul and enjoy the lights and sounds of urban life, you really couldn’t ask for a better city on earth than Nairobi. Nairobi offers beautiful shopping malls, great nightlife and another great advantage of Nairobi living is its proximity to the jewel of our country: its wildlife. The great outdoors, after all, are right in Nairobi’s backyard. There are holiday homes in the capital to suit every taste, from luxurious villas, to sky view apartments and every-thing in between. With such a variety to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find something to your liking.

Among the best life advice anyone can follow is this: seize life by the reins! If you’ve ever stared longingly at photos of beautiful mountains, gorgeous beaches, peaceful lakefronts, or bustling urban landscapes, you owe it to yourself to realize your dreams and purchase a holiday home.

There’s no better time to act, and the longer you wait, the further out of reach every opportunity gets. As homes and land appreciate in price, the opportunity to own your own little refuge may slip away. However, if you seize the day, you’ll be rewarded with a sound investment that will pay dividends for life, in addition to providing you a retreat from the rat race.
