Whether talking about her latest business venture, walking her

GO: What are you looking forward to in 2013?DH: 2013 is going to be a busy and exciting year for me. I recently launched a new on-line business called Balance by Deborah Hutton and in six short months we have had such a tremendous response from women that I know we have hit the right note at the right time. This year is about building the site into something amazing. It has such incredible scope to become the site that 40+ women go to for trusted information, sharing stories, empowerment and learning to lead a happier life.

For me personally, I’m looking forward to putting into practice some of the things I learned from the inspiring women we interviewed, including how to maintain a sense of balance in my own life – juggling the day-to-day is always a challenge – so I look forward to the continual process to fi nd my own balance.

GO: Tell us about your latest venture ‘Balance’?DH: www.balancebydeborahhutton.com.auis a communication platform driven through social media (facebook) where women can go to for help and guidance. It’s based around eight keys that are the general foundation of our every day; body, home, relationships, work, money, beliefs, mind and emotions – these are the areas that make us who we are. Our aim is to explore each key and learn through conversations, talking to advisors, guides and mentors about how we can possibly tweak certain things to ultimately lead a happier life. It’s primarily done through interviews with amazingly successful and inspiring people.

Women are notorious for putting themselves last in line and often feel out

of balance. I hope to be able to restore some sense of perspective and allow them to focus on themselves more. We are also running programs, starting with a 12 week weight loss program, My Balance Personal Trainer and building into multiple programs about everything from fi nancial health to goal setting and nutrition.

GO: What supplements do you take/have you taken and why?DH: I like to balance my system with supplements to support my rather hectic schedule. Magnesium and zinc are key for me to reduce my stress levels. I also have a dedicated workout routine so magnesium is good for my muscles. I like my glass of wine, so I take St Mary’s thistle because I know it supports the liver – as it does get a bit of a beating at times! Vitamin C and fi sh oil are basics and important for every day. When I put on a few kilos, as I did over the Christmas break I like to get back in shape with a detox, lose a couple of kilos and the Blooms Health Products Melt capsules are brilliant, as they reduce my appetite and make it much easier for me to focus on my goal weight. I know that the Blooms brand is Aussie made and I love to support good Australian owned businesses!

GO: What is the most important health tip you follow?DH: For me, keeping a routine is really important, and if you do something long enough it becomes habit. Drinking water, tap or fi ltered, at least two litres a day is critical. I don’t consume sugar drinks or juices, I’m off coffee and love my green and herb teas but water is the lifesaver. Great for your skin, cleansing the

liver, helps retain suppleness – the body functions better, you look and feel better.

GO: How do you deal with stress and maintain balance in your life?DH: I have to be extremely organised in my work schedule to avoid heightened stress. I’m the fi rst person to admit I’m a stress-head - does that come from being a control freak? Yes! So for me it’s a continual practice, I have to really work at it and it’s being mindful of my choices. Saying no to people is very diffi cult but sometimes you have to. Billie, my dog, forces me to walk in the fresh air a couple times a day, golf also is a passion and one of the few sports that forces you to focus on nothing else but the game and getting that ball in the cup.

GO: What do you believe to be your greatest achievement?DH: That’s a tough one! I fi nd it hard to self-acknowledge achievement but funnily enough I tell others all the time and point out their great achievements. I know it’s a really important part of success and achieving goals.

So for me it’s the fact that I’m still here, doing what I love to do, surrounded by good people who I respect and admire. I’ve done it by myself, I now even manage myself, I live in a lovely house, am fortunate to have great friends and I’ve just launched an exciting business that’s my own. It’s my future. I would never have thought that when I started modelling at 16 that I would still be gracing the cover of Australia’s most loved women’s magazine, The Australian Women’s Weekly in my 50’s and talking about my own business. Yes, I suppose I’m proud to be still here doing what I do.

curcumin for management of infl ammatory bowel disease (IBD) conditions such as Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).

In one study, patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) were administered curcumin over an eight-week treatment period. A decrease in IBS prevalence, abdominal pain and discomfort was noted at the end of the eight weeks. Patients also noted an improvement in quality of life.

Curcumin also appears to work well when co-administered with conventional drugs for IBD. In one study, researchers observed signifi cant improvements in UC patients taking curcumin in combination with corticosteroids and mesalazine, to such an extent they reduced (or ceased in one case) their conventional treatments. (Please ensure you seek medical advice before changing or adding any medications or supplements to your daily routine)

Benefi cial results were also obs erved in the Crohn’s group with participants reporting a reduction in pain and cramping.

Additionally blood test results showed reductions in infl ammation markers, specifi cally, C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Supplementing with curcumin has also been shown to be helpful when individuals are in remission to prevent relapse. Reduces osteoarthritis (OA) painIn a small, double blind placebo controlled study undertaken at Deakin University in Australia, supplementation with 1200mg of curcumin over a two-week period was found to relieve pain associated with OA of the carpal metacarpal joint of the thumb. Following supplementation with curcumin, participants demonstrated 50 per cent less pain associated with griping – amazingly within two hours of supplementation – and approximately 25 per cent improvement in grip strength.

Reduces rheumatoid arthritis painIn one small trial, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients were given either 1200mg

daily of curcumin or a non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drug (NSAID – in this trial phenylbutazone), for 14 days. Patients receiving curcumin showed improvements in morning stiffness and joint swelling, as did patients receiving the NSAIDS, however, since NSAIDs can be associated with a range of unpleasant side effects, the option of taking curcumin may be preferable. More recently a small pilot undertaken in patients with active RA showed that taking 500mg curcumin alone was more effective than taking conventional medication. Patients taking the curcumin showed the highest percentage of improvement and reported a reduction in tenderness and joint swelling.

Note: Curcumin has an excellent safety profi le however caution should be exercised in people with bile duct obstruction diseases and gall stones.

For centuries turmeric has been used as a spice and a medicine.

But in recent years this golden spice has come into its own, being hailed as the new super power in the world of supplements.More than 300 different active constituents have been identifi ed in turmeric (Curcuma longa). Of these, researchers have isolated that constituents known as the ‘curcuminoids’ appear to be responsible for the main medicinal actions of turmeric. The curcuminoid that appears to be most signifi cant is known as ‘curcumin’.

It is clear that by extracting the curcumin from turmeric, researchers have found a powerful anti-infl ammatory and potent antioxidant ingredient. While this article focuses on some of the more

recent research, please stay tuned! There is no doubt much more to come from this multi-purpose supplement.

Reduces the risk of diabetesInsulin resistance affl icts many Australians and recent trials have shown that supplementation with curcumin may help slow progression of insulin resistance to diabetes via curcumin’s anti-infl ammatory action. In a recent trial, 240 pre-diabetic adults were assigned to two groups, the fi rst group were supplemented with 500mg of curcumin three times daily, while the other group were given a placebo. At the end of the nine-month study, 16 per cent of the placebo group had developed type-2 diabetes compared to none in curcumin group. Researchers noted that the pancreatic beta cells of the patients taking curcumin improved the way they released insulin; typically in diabetes pancreatic beta cells lose their ability to release insulin properly.

Reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levelsHigh cholesterol and triglycerides are a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease however a number of studies have shown that supplementation with curcumin may help to reduce both serum cholesterol and triglycerides. In one small study involving healthy volunteers, curcumin was found to increase HDL cholesterol (the good type of cholesterol) by 29 per cent and decrease total serum cholesterol by 12 per cent. These positive effects are thought to occur via the antioxidant action of curcumin. It may also be infl uenced by curcumin’s protective action on the liver where it has been shown to prevent fat accumulating in liver cells which would otherwise contribute to fatty liver disease.

Reduces infl ammatory boweldisease painOver the last few years, more and more studies have highlighted the effi cacy of

BreakfastSwap: Cereal for porridgeWhy: Besides warming you up on a cold winter morning, porridge is rich in fi bre which can help with digestion, bowel health, reduce your risk of high cholesterol and heart disease. Plus, eating a healthy, hearty meal at breakfast helps maintain your blood sugar levels and ward off hunger attacks later in the day. Additionally, a good brekkie will helpyou lose weight and keep it off, reports research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. How: When you think porridge, don’t just limit yourself to rolled oats. Rolled oats are an oldie and a goodie, but there are many other foods you can make your porridge with. A visit to your local Go Vita will

provide you with other options including polenta, rice, barley or quinoa fl akes. You can make it with milk or dairy alternatives such as soy or almond milk, or even juice. Juice adds a lovely sweetness to the porridge. The same sweetness can be achieved by stirring through some dried fruit or a drizzle of honey. For an added protein boost sprinkle a LSA (linseed, sunfl ower and almond) mix or chia seeds over the top instead.

SnacksSwap: Fruit salad to stewed fruit Why: All fruits are packed with vitamins and minerals which have wonderful health properties and can reduce your risk of cancers and many other chronic diseases.

The beauty of stewed fruit is that not only are you getting all the goodness of fruit, but also the benefi ts of the delicious spices used to stew the fruit. Cinnamon is good to maintain blood sugar levels and cloves are jam-packed with antioxidants. Vanilla is also a great one and American research published in the journal Chemical Senses found that the smell of vanilla helps boost your mood and makes you feel more relaxed.

research published in the Journal of Zhejing University of Science, is that less nutrients are lost roasting compared to grilling. How: Using baking paper can eliminate the need for oil when roasting vegies. Leave the skin on and cut the vegies into large chunks as this helps retain more nutrients reports The Asia Pacifi c Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Just like with stewing fruit, the herbs and spices you add to your roast vegies gives you an added health kick. Try garlic for immunity, paprika for vitamin C and turmeric to help maintain a healthy heart.

DrinksSwap: Iced tea for hot teaWhy: Besides the fact that warming your hands on a hot cup of tea is one of life’s simple pleasures in winter, drinking tea is a great way to keep your fl uids up in the chilly season. Go Vita has a huge range of healthy teas to choose from this winter too! Choose from peppermint tea for calming your digestive system, natural green tea for an antioxidant boost, rosehip tea as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up or camomile tea to help you wind down from a busy day.

How: Chop your fruit (apples and pears are great) up into generous chunks or slices and add a little bit of water and your desired spices to a pot. Fruit is sweet enough on its own and doesn’t really require any sugars to be added to your mix, however, if you wish to, why not try a natural alternative such as coconut sugar or maple syrup. in the skin. It pays to be mindful of your serving size with stewed fruit as it is easy to eat a lot of it. Three tablespoons of stewed

fruit is equivalent to one serve of fruit.

LunchSwap: Salads to soups

Why: The idea of tucking into a salad in winter can be less than comforting. A bowl of steaming, hot soup on the other hand is just the ticket to keep you full, nourished and healthy. Research out of the University of Nebraska Medical Centre found that consuming homemade chicken soup made using chicken, onions, sweet potato, parsnips, turnips, celery and parsley can ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, improve hydration and increase feelings of wellbeing. Soup is also reported to keep you feeling fuller for longer compared to other types of foods,

which is helpful if you’re trying to lose or maintain weight. Additionally, a serve of vegetable soup can help up your daily intake of vegetables. How: Heat some oil in a large pot and sauté chopped onions and diced garlic. Throw a tablespoon of fl our into the pot and mix vigorously. The fl our helps thicken the soup without adding cream later on. Add your stock, mix well to dissolve any lumps of fl our, then add your chopped vegies of choice. Simmer until they’re tender, then process and serve. Spinach soup is great with a squeeze of lemon and pumpkin soup is delicious with coconut milk and chilli fl akes.

1 Scrub upWash your hands! That’s the number

one rule for keeping seasonal nasties out of your system. Although it’s something that’s drummed into us during childhood, it seems as if we’ve forgotten how important it is. Only 75 per cent of females and 58 per cent of males wash their hands. Yep, that’s what American research has reported. Which is disconcerting since a little scrubbing can help prevent a number of illnesses such as colds and tummy bugs.

2 Take a tea breakCurling up with a cup

of green tea can help fi ght off infections and even rejuvenate your skin cells. It has to do with

the chemicals called alkylamines in the tea. Experiments found that blood exposed to the alkylamines produced a defensive reaction against bacteria that was fi ve times stronger than blood that hadn’t been exposed to the specifi c chemicals.

3 Add some spice to your lifeYou can add some fl avour to

your cooking and boost your immunity in one hit with

spices. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that spices had antibacterial and

immune lifting properties. Spices such as chilli, clove,

cinnamon, cumin and nutmeg were found to prevent free radicals

from occurring, stimulate the immune system, and reduce infl ammation and antiviral effects.

4 Hit the sackGetting enough rest and plenty of sleep

is crucial if you want your body to avoid winter lurgies. During sleep, the immune system’s fuel tank is topped up. Additionally, the natural hormone called melatonin that is released at night, not only encourages

H E A LT H REPORT

sleep, it also supports the immune system. German research discovered that people who are sleep deprived – even for just one night – have half the amount of antibodies in their body than people who get a full night’s sleep.

5 Get onto garlicGarlic is packed with antioxidants,

which is good for eliminating free radicals from your system. Plus it can help you avoid infections, bacteria and viruses. Taken as a supplement you can ensure an effective dose. If you are concerned about odour look for an aged garlic extract.

6 Go herbalConsuming olive leaf extract may

very well improve your immune system’s capacity. Studies suggest that olive leaf extract’s main active ingredient, oleuropein, has a benefi cial effect against disease producing micro-organisms through its effect on natural immunity. Taken daily, it may help to reduce the risk and incidence of upper respiratory tract infections. Used in acute situations it can soothe a sore throat, relieve a cough and reduce nasal congestion.

7 Take a probiotic Besides from keeping

your gut in good health, probiotics can also help your immunity. According to the Harvard Medical School there is a link between the bacteria in the gut whereby certain gut bacteria can correct defi ciencies in the immune system.

8 Supplement your dietMultivitamins have many health

benefi ts. In the short-term, you can expect increased energy levels, less stress and a better resistance to infection. On a long-term basis, benefi ts include improved immune health. So make sure if you aren’t consuming an adequate diet you supplement it – liquid multivitamins are a good option particularly if you aren’t fond of taking tablets.

9 Move moreDon’t use winter as an excuse to avoid

exercise, as it might just stop you from catching a winter bug. Exercise can fl ush bacteria and waste from the body through the lungs and via sweating. This is believed to reduce the chances of developing colds and coughs. The key is exercising regularly at a moderate intensity. However, research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that high-intensity exercise lasting for more than 90 minutes can decrease immune function for up to a

day after the exercise session.

10 Act fastIf yo u feel the hint

of a cold or fl u coming on then jump straight onto taking potent elderberry extract, rich in antioxidants, which

studies have shown can relieve symptoms and

shorten the duration of the fl u to two or three days only. Combine

this with zinc and vitamin C and you have a powerful team of bug fi ghters.

Fish oil According to multiple studies, fi sh oil supplements have been consistently shown to reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, such as the number of tender joints, pain intensity and morning stiffness. Studies have also shown that rheumatoid arthritis patients taking fi sh oil reduce their use of non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs. The key fatty acids in fi sh oil, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), exhibit anti-infl ammatory activity, providing support for their use in osteoarthritis pain management. Fish oil is available in both capsules and liquid. It appears the liquid is more readily absorbed as it’s more concentrated. The daily dose of fi sh oil is 3-7g.

MSM (Methyl sulfonylmethane) MSM possesses anti-infl ammatory and analgesic actions. The daily dosage of MSM is 1.5-6g in divided doses in adults and pain relief can be seen in 4-6 weeks. MSM, a naturally occurring substance (found in green plants, vegetables, fruits, grains, milk and algae) is commercially available as a single product or in combination with other products.

Green lipped mussel (GLM)The New Zealand GLM is rich in omega-3 poly unsaturated fatty acids and has been consistently linked with alleviating the symptoms of osteoarthritis, it also appears to improve joint function and mobility and may also help relieve the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. A daily dose of 900-1200mg (in divided doses) is recommended. Interestingly, GLM has also successfully treated dogs with osteoarthritis.

Calcium for bone health When dealing with joint pain, we shouldn’t underestimate the role calcium plays in supporting bone growth, and healing and maintaining bone strength. Rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with corticosteroids may have decreased calcium levels.

Rosehip extractRosehip extract is emerging as a new alternative to help relieve osteoarthritis symptoms. In 2008 research concluded taking 2,500mg of rosehip extract twice daily provides sufferers with a mild to moderate pain relieving benefi t and also allowed them to decrease their use of analgesics.

Arthritis is not a single disease but a term that refers to more than 100 medical conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, in particular the joints such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Here we look at the top selling complementary therapies and review their effectiveness.

GlucosamineGlucosamine is a naturally occurring substance, required for the production of substances that make up joint tissue, such as tendons, synovial fl uid and articular cartilage. In detailed studies, glucosamine was found to delay the progression of knee osteoarthritis after administration of 1500mg once or twice daily, for over two or three years. There is strong evidence for glucosamine being

effective in treating symptoms of osteoarthritis, as well as slowing disease progression. It can take up to eight weeks for effects to be felt.

For those with a seafood allergy it is important to speak with your doctor before taking glucosamine supplements.

Chondroitin sulfate:Chondroitin is derived from bovine (cow) cartilage and has been shown to exhibit an anti-infl ammatory activity and possess positive benefi ts in osteoarthritis management alone or in combination with glucosamine. Over a period of a couple of years and in combination with glucosamine, chondroitin may slow degenerative processes affecting knee joint cartilage.

Some experts believe that mushrooms come from space and that their spores travelled here on meteorites millions of years ago! Whether

you believe them or not what we know for sure is that certain mushrooms such as the Ganoderma lucidum or red reishi have some potent immune boosting, healing and anti-anxiety powers.

The reishi (Japanese) mushroom known botanically as the Ganoderma lucidum has been traditionally used by the Chinese for thousands of years as a longevity tonic and appears to be the oldest species of mushroom to have been used as a medicine. In ancient times, the mushroom was so highly prized as the elixir of life, it was reserved for use only by the Emperor (and presumably those who accessed his medicine cabinet!).

With modern production techniques making it more accessible, it is no longer kept exclusively for those of noble birth right, but available to all and in recent times much research has gone into attempting to prove the old claims surrounding its many therapeutic benefi ts. The ancient Chinese used this bitter-tasting mushroom to improve memory function, believing it staved off senility. It was used as a tonic for calming the nerves and helping people cope in times of diffi culty. Today, ganoderma is often prescribed to anyone whose immune system could be compromised.

Containing more than 400 nutrients, ganoderma is an adaptogen, or natural body regulator, which means it strengthens the body’s responses to stress and can address an under or over-active immune system and adjust function accordingly.

The scienceIt is believed the secret to ganoderma’s myriad of healing properties lies in the richness of its organic compounds, which are too many to list. Many studies have been conducted in attempts to identify which specifi c elements of the

Ganoderma lucidum mushroom work in a particularly benefi cial way. Often attempts to evaluate specifi c natural compounds are done by pharmaceutical companies with the hope of reproducing synthetic versions for mass production. So far such research has yielded inconsistent results and some experts now believe it is the combination of the plant’s active ingredients which hold the as yet undiscovered answers.

Mushroom benefi tsWhether struggling with illness, such as a bout of hard-to-beat infl uenza, a viral infection, chronic fatigue, or the side-effects of modern medicine including chemotherapy, ganoderma is thought to help boost the body’s effi ciency by

modifying its responses and aiding repair.

Its benefi ts in calming and rebalancing mean it is also still used by those with stress problems, as well as assisting with sleep issues and anxiety. It is also said to build stamina in recovery. Nutrient-rich ganoder-ma assists with toxic elimination and can help restore pH levels in the body to a more alka-line state.

Recent Australian research indicates that ganoderma may also play a role in maintaining healthy blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

The ganoderma mushroom has been shown to be anti-infl ammatory, antiviral and antifungal as well as having a high antioxidant content. However, ganoderma is not a culinary mushroom and should only be taken in medicinal form after seeking advice from a medical professional. It may interact with some medicines.

H E A LT H REPORT

Every woman experiences menopause in a unique way, with the range and severity of symptoms varying greatly from one woman to another. The onset of menopause usually starts from the age of 50, when there is insuffi cient oestrogen and progesterone for a normal monthly ‘ripening’ of the uterus. With these hormonal changes, various symptoms can occur.

Common symptoms of menopauseThe fi rst signs of menopause may include: Changes in a previously regular bleed,

either in volume or duration or a missed period.

Hot fl ushing, clamminess, excessive perspiration and sweaty palms.

Mood swings, anxiety, depression and irritability.

Development or exacerbation of premenstrual symptoms, such as fl uid retention, breast pain and headaches.

Skin changes, such as reduced elasticity and dryness, especially of the vagina, causing discomfort during intercourse.

Numbness or cramps in legs, especially at night.

Joint pain, loss of sexual desire and changes in body shape.

Menopause and Chinese medicineIn Chinese medicine philosophy, the management of menopause centres around restoring Kidney energy (Jing) and balancing Yin and Yang to support the functions of various organs and tissues affected during menopause.

Of the twelve primary organ-meridian systems that govern the health of the entire body, the Kidney organ-meridian system is particularly important because it stores Jing (Kidney energy) – much like a battery stores electricity – and is the source for the opposing forces of Yin and Yang that regulate the ebb and fl ow of Qi (vital energy) through all the other organ-meridian systems. Kidney energy is progressively depleted with age and is particularly vulnerable to exhaustion from mid-life onwards when menopause commonly begins. The signifi cance of the Kidney organ-meridian system for menopausal women lies in its governance of the organs and tissues affected during menopause. These include the ovaries, adrenal glands, brain, skeletal structure (especially the lower back), kidneys, teeth, urethra and inner ear, as well as the hormones, fl uids and other substances produced by the ovaries, adrenals and kidneys.

During menopause Yin and Yang are both defi cient and out of balance, causing instability in circulatory dynamics, with sudden hot fl ushes and excessive sweating. In this situation, Yin fails to adequately anchor Yang, which upsurges releasing heat, especially in the upper part of the body and head.

In biomedical terms, restoring Kidney energy and balancing Yin and Yang works to: Modulate hormone function Inhibit hot fl ushes and excessive

perspiration

Alleviate irritability, insomnia, mild anxiety and mood swings

Relieve headache, dizziness, breast tenderness, fatigue, palpitations and joint pain

Enhance sexual vitality and genital sensitivity

Overcome skin and vaginal dryness Support healthy bones

Effective Chinese herbs for managing menopauseSince no single herb (Chinese or Western) can provide complete support during meno-pause, Chinese medicine always combines several herbs together for best effect. This way, not only do women experience greater benefi ts but they also enjoy longer lasting results with fewer side effects.

Anemarrhena asphodeloides (zhi mu) is a unique herb with no real equivalent in Western herbal medicine. It is rich in steroidal saponins that support hormone function, and epitomises what a Kidney Yin tonic means in pharmacological terms, providing refrigerant (cooling), mucogenic (moistening) and tonic (nourishing) actions. These actions can signifi cantly reduce hot fl ushes and excessive perspiration, and moisten vaginal dryness.

Phellodendron amurense (huang bai) reinforces the cooling action of anemarrhena, and Chinese herbalists usually prescribe them in combination.

Pueraria lobata (kudzu) contains phytoestrogens and scientifi c research has demonstrated its benefi cial health effects

during menopause, reducing hot fl ushes and inhibiting bone loss. Kudzu has oestrogenic effects on vaginal tissue, helping to alleviate dryness and improving comfort during intercourse.

Angelica polymorpha (dong quai), a popular women’s herb in Chinese medicine, is often called ‘female ginseng’ because it nourishes and invigorates Blood and harmonises Qi, so is especially helpful when experiencing menstrual pain, pelvic discomfort, fatigue or low vitality, or when recovering after childbirth. Traditional evidence demonstrates dong quai is especially effective for women with Yin defi ciency, as is the case during menopause. Modern research has shown how the combination of dong quai with other Chinese herbs has the ability to reduce both the intensity and number of menopausal hot fl ushes.

Epimedium sagittatum (yin yang huo or horny goat weed) and Morinda offi cinalis (bai ji tian), are two of Chinese medicine’s premier Kidney Yang tonics. Together they warm the Kidney and strengthen Yang to help restore sexual vitality, physical drive and psychological motivation. These herbs are classifi ed as aphrodisiacs and urogenital tonics, as they not only help to overcome sexual disinterest but also ease bladder weakness and urinary incontinence. Morinda is also an adaptogen that enhances the body’s resistance to stress, and both herbs appear to possess hormone regulating activity. Epimedium is considered biphasic in that it secondarily tonifi es Kidney Yin, while anchoring the Yang to prevent upsurging of heat in the upper body.Paul Keogh is the executive and technical director for Global Therapeutics P/L trading as Fusion® Health. Paul is a qualifi ed naturopath and medical herbalist with 26 years combined experience in clinical practice and the development of integrated Chinese and western herbal medicines.

In Chinese medicine, foods that nourish Kidney Yin help clear heat and reduce symptoms like hot fl ushes and night sweats. Pears, lychees, longan fruit, sesame seeds, black beans, walnuts and cashews are all good examples.

Healthy weight management and exercise are important. Studies show that overweight women experience more frequent and severe hot fl ushes compared to women of a healthy weight. Exercise helps improve mood and reduce the risk of developing lifestyle diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Weight-bearing exercise is important for maintaining bone density and helps prevent osteoporosis.

Research shows that smokers experience more frequent and severe hot fl ushes than non-smokers.

Caffeine and alcohol can trigger hot fl ushes, interfere with sleep quality and contribute to mood changes;so minimising their intake is recommended.

Stress can trigger hot fl ushes and increase their severity. Managing stress effectively with meditation or exercise can help reduce hot fl ushes, lift the mood and improve sleep quality.

Calcium is important for bone density and helps prevent osteoporosis. It also benefi ts healthy blood pressure and weight management. Calcium glycinate is an ideal choice being a highly absorbed, organic form. Vitamin D is an important co-factor for calcium, and supplements are a good way of ensuring adequate levels of both are met.

Menopause health tips

manage menopause naturally with Chinese herbs In clinical practice naturopath Paul Keogh has observed that Chinese herbs offer

the most profound results for menopausal women. By drawing on ancient Chinese wisdom, he has discovered that the key to successfully managing menopause

symptoms is to support the health of the Kidney.

Your liver is a very hard working organ, its major functions include regulating your metabolic rate as well as cleansing and detoxifying your bloodstream. If your liver is not working optimally there are some recognisable signs:

Excessive sweating, particularlyfrom the face and feet

Lumps of fat in your skin, particularly on the eyelids

Dilated facial blood vessels(red capillaries)

Brownish spots and blemisheson the skin

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes Red, swollen, itchy (allergic) eyes Dark circles under your eyes Skin rashes and itchy skin Fluid retention Coated tongue Red cheeks Bad breath Pot belly Cellulite Acne

What is a fatty liver?A fatty liver contains an excessive amount of fat and the normal healthy liver tissue is partly replaced with areas of unhealthy fats, it is usually caused by the consumption of too many carbohydrate foods, especially sugary foods, bread, pastries, pasta, breakfast cereals and fl our based foods. Eventually the excess carbohydrate raises the blood sugar which is then turned into fat and stored in the liver, abdominal cavity and under the skin.

The fat underneath the skin can appear as cellulite, this often occurs in women with excess oestrogen. Excess oestrogen can also cause fl uid retention, painful breasts and mood changes before menstruation. The key to balancing oestrogen and progesterone levels is to improve your liver function. The eating plan in my book, Fatty Liver: You Can Reverse It, can help you achieve this.

The liver also plays a vital role in the metabolism of thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland predominantly makes a hormone called T4 which must be converted in the liver to its active form T3. Symptoms of sluggish thyroid function include fatigue,

weight gain, depression, dry skin, dysfunctional menstrual periods and hair loss, all of which can

be aggravated by poor liver health. If you have these symptoms and your thyroid appears ‘fi ne’ in a blood test, then maybe you should look more closely at your liver health.

One in fi ve Australians has a ‘fatty liver’ and many of them don’t even realise it! However

there are some outward tell-tale signs that your liver is not in great shape. Dr Sandra Cabot explains.

If you eat excess carbohydrate you will fi nd that your blood sugar levels will rise and this will make you more susceptible to a fatty liver, as well as skin infections such as rashes and pimples. The good news is that you can reverse these problems by improving your liver function.

You may want to do this detox diet several times during a year, not only will you keep your liver happy but you will have clearer skin, brighter eyes, improved mood

and ability to concentrate, better sleep and more energy.

Antioxidants and phyto-nutrients are abundant in fresh fruit and veggies, teas, herbs, spices, seeds – just about every imaginable plant. They protect our cells, boost our immune system, reduce infl ammation and cholesterol and can help speed recovery from injury and illness.

Magnesium, essential for muscle function and healthy nerve tissue, is estimated to be defi cient in a third of Australian adults. Exercise and stress can deplete us further. While dark chocolate and almonds are high in magnesium, one of the main problems we face is absorption. In powdered form, mixed with water, magnesium supplements can improve cellular function. Low magnesium levels can lead to tight muscles, cramp, irritability, fatigue, headache, twitches, tremors and stress management issues.

Soft tissue repair is essential for optimal sports performance. For centuries, arnica has been used in

ointments for sprains, strains and bruises. Modern day organic arnica oil or cream, applied both before and after exercise helps restore tired aching muscles, reduces pain, infl ammation and bruising and speeds muscle recovery.

An athlete nearing optimal levels will have a rapid recovery rate between training sessions, compounding the benefi ts of their hard work.

While it’s a multifaceted issue, much of this is within your control, primarily how and when you fuel and hydrate your muscles. This key issue can infl uence how often you train, how hard you work and how quickly you return to it.

With the right nourishment, meaning the correct combination of carbohydrates, protein, good fats, vitamins, minerals and hydration, along with adequate rest, you can give yourself an athletic edge.

In a perfect world we’d get everything we need to support our sporting endeavours from whole foods and pure water. Mindful shopping and food preparation can go a long way towards this, but dietary supplements can also help us get back up quicker, as well as supporting hormonal systems and fi ghting the effects of stress,

lowering infl ammation levels, assisting immune function and guarding joints and cartilage.

The following can keep you on the right track: Alkaline forming foods, including

green vegetables, seaweeds and algae (eg. chlorella and spirulina) help build and support bone growth.

Calcium, also essential for strong bones and muscle function, is found in dark leafy greens and herbs, dairy products, tofu, Brazil nuts, sesame seeds and fi sh where the bones are eaten.

Essential fatty acids (omega 3s and 6s) found in oily fi sh, chia and fl ax seeds, as-sist with endurance by supporting cardiovascular health and lowering in-fl ammation.

Iron, found in red meat, pumpkin and sesame seeds and dark leafy vegetables, helps improve stamina by heightening the blood’s ability to transport oxygen.

Electrolytes are important for maintain-ing hydration. There are many ready-made electrolyte drinks availa-ble, as well as supplements to mix with water. In recent times, coconut water has become popular, due to its natu-rally high electrolyte levels and lack of artifi cial additives.

Foods that healJust as there are foods that harm your teeth, there are foods that help protect your chompers too. They include cheese, natural yoghurt, chicken, meat, nuts, milk and vegetables.

The beauty of these foods is that they help restore the minerals in your teeth that are stripped by acids. Calcium and phosphorous are the minerals that help protect tooth enamel. Additionally, crunchy foods such as vegetables help stimulate saliva that in turn can wash away food particles and neutralise acid.

Healthy oral hygieneEstablishing a good oral hygiene routine is easy. There are just fi ve simple steps to remember.

Gently brush your teeth twice a day for two to three minutes, ensuring you brush the sides and top of the teeth and where the teeth and gums meet gently massage your gums with the brush.

Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every two or three months as after

that it becomes ineffective. Floss your teeth once a day. Visit your dentist for a check-up every six months.

and Research explains that diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s are all

linked to poor dental health. Gum disease during pregnancy is also known to cause premature birth and low birth weights in children.

Foods that harmA number of foods and drinks can impact on the health of your teeth and oral hygiene. You are probably aware of all the usual culprits such as lollies, sugar, potato chips, soft drink, juice and biscuits but the list also includes fresh and dried fruit, nut butters and muesli bars. Some of these foods might sound surprising, after all fruit and portion controlled serves of nut butters and dried fruit are good for you, right? Indeed, they are, but they can be a little problematic when it comes to your dental health. It’s because they contain a form of sugar that sticks to your teeth. The sugars in these foods

are a smorgasbord for the bacteria found in plaque, which is a tacky substance that adheres to your teeth and leads to tooth decay. The bacteria feed off the sugar in your food and as a result create acids which erode your teeth.

The acidity of wine also plays a role in tooth erosion as well as the colour of your teeth. English research published in the Journal of Dental Research found that strong coloured food and drink such as red wine and black tea can stain teeth.

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) says that it pays to be mindful about the effect these foods are having on your teeth, but cutting them, particularly the healthy foods, from your diet isn’t the way to go. Limiting these foods is wise or adopting strategies to deal with them such as drinking from straws to limit the contact of the beverage to your teeth, having a glass of water or milk after eating, or chewing sugar-free gum (look for xylitol gums) after meals and snacks when you are unable to brush.

Fluoride is a natural mineral and helpful in protecting your teeth from decay. In Australia, fl uoride is found in water and also in most mainstream toothpastes.

However, too much fl uoride, especially in children under eight years old has been found to stain teeth. This is called dental fl uorosis. The main cause of dental fl uorosis is when young children eat toothpaste or don’t spit the paste out when brushing. As such, it is important to supervise children carefully while they’re cleaning their teeth.

2Eat your way to glowing skin

Great skin health starts with excellent nutrition, so make sure you include plenty of leafy greens, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains in your diet. Oily fi sh like salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids which are fantastic for your skin. If you can, eat salmon two or three times a week and watch your skin glow.

3Create your own day spa at homeIf you are working within a beauty

budget, treat yourself to facials at home. Whip up your own custom-made facial masks with delicious fruits like papaya and strawberries. The fruit acids and enzymes found in fruits can help to slough off dead skin cells, improve blemishes, and refi ne and rehydrate your skin.

4Minimise your sun exposurePrevention is better than cure,

and one easy way to minimise any future cosmetic expenses is to keep your face out of the sun. This is vital to ensure dark spots, skin discolourations, wrinkles and fi ne lines are kept at bay. Always wear a mineral, zinc-based sunscreen if you are outdoors.

5Drink plenty of fi ltered water

Maintaining proper hydration of your cells is vital for achieving a fl awless complexion. Include plenty of alkalised water in your diet to fl ush out toxins and keep your skin well hydrated. Adding a serve of liquid chlorophyll to fi ltered water once a day is another terrifi c way to restore radiance to your skin.

6Get your beauty sleepDon’t skimp on your

beauty sleep! Aim for eight uninterrupted hours a night for beautiful, well-rested skin. The sleep cycle is your body’s chance to

heal and repair itself, and is essential for rejuvenating and

reconditioning your complexion.

7 ExerciseRegular physical activity boosts

circulation, restores vitality to your skin and makes you feel great! Taking a brisk 30 minute walk every day is one of the cheapest and most effective things you can do for your skin and your overall health and wellbeing.

It needn’t cost the earth to get great skin. Here are Helene Larson’s top tips for healthy, radiant skin on a budget.

1Stick to a basic skin care routineYou don’t need lots of expensive products to get gorgeous skin. Stick

to the basics and invest in natural rejuvenating products including a cleanser and moisturiser that are well suited to your skin type. If you have dry skin, add a hydrating serum or rosehip oil under your moisturiser to amp up your hydration levels and ‘plump up’ skin cells. Natural products available in health shops may not have fancy packaging and fancy price tags you fi nd elsewhere but they will nourish and rejuvenate your skin without the addition of nasty chemicals. Next time you visit Go V ita check out their ranges of natural skin and hair care.
