    The Government has long recognised the importance of embracing theknowledge economy and has set challenging targets for governmentonline services . The range of online services offered by government departments arecomparable with the best world wide but the rates of adoption arerelatively low .

    Businesses and taxpayers who interact electronically on a day to daybasis, with their customers, or in the course of their work or personallives, are less inclined to change the way they deal with thegovernment agencies . (Kables online, 2010 issue)

    Enterprise Resource Planning ystem is anelectronic tool used by HMRC for the purpose of trading electronically with its suppliers .

    The e-trading system currently operated by HMRCis an online, browser based application thatprovides its staff with desktop personal computer access to electronic catalogue and non-catalogueordering systems for the purchase of goods and/or services .

    HMRC is a data controller within the meaning of the Act and theyprocess large volumes of personal data where they aremanaged under Data Protection Act (1998) requiresorganisations which process personal data to meet certain legalobligations .

    HMRC give data information to others only if the law allows toother govt dept . and similar bodies, police and law enforcementagencies, the courts or foreign tax and customs authorities .October 2007, HMRC encountered problems following the chainof events leading to the loss of the child benefit data

    Conclusions and

    Recommendations The most important thing that HMRC needs to do is toimprove online services,

    focus on building robust services that can cope with

    high-volume usage at peak times . We know that this is aconsistent message from current and potential users .
