masai mara safari: itineraryday 1 - nairobiDeparting from the Boulevard Hotel, Nairobi at 08.45am we journey via the spectacular Great Rift Valley and Narok town to the Masai Mara. The Great Rift Valley was formed millions of years ago. Running all the way from Jordan to Mozambique, it is the longest rift on earth. Formed due to geological tension in the earth’s crust, in Kenya the Rift Valley gave rise to many lakes that have become a habitat for diverse wildlife. An afternoon arrival into the Masai Lands is completed with a drive through Hemingway’s country on the way to our camp on the edge of Kenya’s most famous game reserve. We set up camp, and later enjoy dinner. Dinner and overnight – Masai Mara.

NOTE: The pre departure meeting for this bolt-on is at 17.00hrs the day before the bolt-on begins. Due to the early start on day 1, you should spend the night in Nairobi and if you would like us to organise the pre tour accommodation for you, we will be happy to do so. Please contact us for details, the cost will be payable locally.

Departures from 31 Dec 2011 onwards - This safari will depart from Acacia Camp Nairobi and the pre departure meeting will also be held at Acacia Camp.Acacia Camp, Magadi Road (off Langata Road), Nairobi - tel: +254 (0) 20 890661 / 892261

day 2 - masai maraMasai Mara - breakfast. From our base camp a full day is spent game viewing and exploring the natural wonders of the Masai Mara. The rolling plains are stocked not only with the well-known predatory game but also with zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, hippo and crocodile. Lunch, dinner and overnight – Masai Mara.

day 3 - masai mara Masai Mara - breakfast. Departing the Masai Mara in the morning, we reach Nairobi in the late afternoon. Here we’ll part ways after having had a brief encounter with amazing Africa.

pre tour bolt on optionIf you have taken advantage of the free offer and are taking this trip before your tour begins, you can stay down in the Masai Mara for a third night and meet the rest of your group there, rather than having to return to Nairobi on day 3 and travel back to the Masai Mara again the following day. This will cost an additional cost of approx US $100, to be paid locally (this includes Masai Mara park fees and 3 meals). Please advise us at the time of booking if you’d like to take this option.

PLEASE NOTE: this expedition is run in conjunction with Africa Travel Co.

game drivesIn such a vast territory, it is useful to know what to look at and when. Dusk, and better dawn, are the best moments for wildlife watching. Especially at sunrise, nocturnal mammals are still active, while the diurnals enjoy the cool hours to move around or chase their prey. It is at this time that you are more likely to witness a kill, or simply watch the big cats wandering around the grasslands, before the sun plummets over the plains and it is time to look for a shade to ease the day out. During the central daylight hours, the excessive heat makes the animals rather lethargic. Movements are slow, racing is out of the question and wildlife flees for shade beneath the nearest acacia. This is why expedition companies schedule game drives for dawn/dusk. Bring a pair of binoculars for the game drives to ensure you get to see all the wildlife, in its full glory!

african-style expeditionsWe appreciate that for most people, it will be their first time in Africa. We hope to prepare you as much as possible in what to expect from your expedition, and would like to stress that an overland expedition is very different to a typical ‘holiday’ or ‘tour’. It is important to consider this choice of holiday is emphatically not a TOUR. An expedition across Africa is not always ‘beer and skittles’! Africa does not run like a well-oiled wheel. Therefore, do not expect the streamlined travel arrangements associated with other continents. Africa, particularly the parts we travel to is not like a holiday tour in the USA, Europe or other Western or First-World destinations. Things never run according to plan; there will be times when you’ll need to be thoughtful and patient about your travels.

Conditions in Africa vary dramatically; for example there are differences in the campsites and the availability of certain foodstuffs between that of Eastern Africa and Southern Africa. Armed with a flexible approach, you’ll enjoy your trip more. In conclusion, your Trip Leader is always conscious of every passenger’s views, though sometimes he/she may have to make an unpopular decision and your understanding will be appreciated in these circumstances.

Travellers must be prepared to accept local conditions as they find them. Africa, by its very nature can throw up a surprise or two on occasion, so a flexible attitude coupled with tolerance, is a must! In exchange for this, you’ll enjoy an expedition so rich in new experiences, you’ll wonder why you didn’t sign up for the time of your life earlier!

responsible tourismAt on the go, we recognise and value the fragility of the cultures, eco-systems and economies we visit. In turn, this requires a sustained commitment from us to ensure our presence has a positive effect. We therefore make the following reasonable requests of all our travellers:

• Respect property and surroundings - natural or man-made. Leave places as you found them, if not better.• Always treat the local people, their cultures and beliefs with respect. • Please respect government laws and local customs of the countries and regions we travel through.• Natural resources such as water are precious on

the continent. Piped water is a luxury, and often we’ll have to walk some distance to get water at campsites and so forth. Please don’t waste any water.

• Firewood is collected in areas where it is in abundance. At other times, we’ll buy it locally. However, the wood is for cooking only and not for huge, roaring campfires.

• We respectfully request that rubbish and detritus from the truck is well-disposed of. In general,

paper should be burned, biodegradeables should be buried and containers should be given away. If needing to go to the toilet in the bush, make sure your waste is properly buried.

• Services provided by local people such as clothes laundering, shoe repairing and guiding helps bring

money to local communities. Please support the local services where possible.• If offering anything such as gifts or other to local people, please do so discreetly and without show.• Drugs, firearms and other weapons are

not allowed aboard our trucks, under any circumstances.

optional excursionsTo help you budget, here is a list of some of the most sought after optional activities available in Kenya. All prices are in US Dollars. Though current at time of print, all costs are subject to fluctuation and on the go will not be responsible for alterations to prices listed. Offering optional excursions affords a greater degree of flexibility, independence and choice to our travellers. Prices vary according to the optional excursion. It is suggested you budget separately for optional excursions. Please note: All optional excursions are undertaken at own risk. on the go take no responsibility for personal loss/injury caused. Some optional excursions may require the participant to read, understand and sign a disclaimer whilst in Africa.
