Waste Minimization Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

How long does it take to decompose in a landfill?

• Plastic bottle - > 1000 years • Glass - > 4000 years •Aluminum Can - > 500 years (But if recycled, it can be reused within 6 weeks!)

What do we want to leave for our future generation? REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Page 3: Go green

• 1 ton of office paper uses 24 trees • 1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper • 1 ream uses 6% of a tree • 1 ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees

• Double-sided photocopying or printing. • Reduce excess printing and copying. • Use projector instead of giving handouts in

meeting room. • Circulate written or printed memos. • Set the fax machine so it does not print out

confirmation after each fax. • Encourage reduction of paper generation through

e-mail. • Convert the document into PDF format and store

in computer instead of storing printed copy. • Reduce newspaper generation (e.g. utilize

electronic news services, reduce subscriptions etc.)

• Do not ask for a plastic bag if you can take the packet of food back to the office.

Recyclable Waste • Do our bit for environment. We are going to continue the recycling

initiative at Menara Gamuda. At the moment, please use the available recycling bins to recycle the materials.

Status:

• We are in the midst of improving the recycling facilities in Menara Gamuda, look out for our future improvements!

• The provision of facilities for e-waste and other scheduled wastes are in the progress of arrangement by Admin Department and QSHE Department. We will update you when it is finalized.

SCHEDULED WASTE MANAGEMENT

Lighting • Try to utilize our natural light. Turn off lights in spaces where

natural light is sufficient. • Make it a habit to switch off lights in unoccupied spaces, e.g.

compactor, pantry, toilet areas, etc. • Minimum lighting during lunch time. • If you are the last person who leave your office, please

switch off all the lights.

Computer • Set your computer to energy-saving setting mode. • Make it a habit to shut it off (including the monitor) when

you leave the office. • Avoid setting Computer in “standby mode” as it will

continue draw power even when not in use. • Printers, scanners, and other peripherals can be unplugged

over weekend.

Energy Saving

• If you wish to pack food for lunch, avoid using polystyrene. Please use your own reusable container.

WHY? • Polystyrene contains toxic substances styrene and

benzene which are cancer causing. The toxins leach when they come into contact with hot/ warm food or drink, which threaten human health.

• Polystyrene manufacturing process is the 5th largest creator of hazardous waste..

• It is made of petroleum, a non-sustainable resource.

• Polystyrene is not biodegradable,, it takes several decades to hundreds of years for polystyrene to decompose.

SAY NO TO POLYSTYRENE!
