Go further in every possible future at UQBC UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND B OAT C LUB B RISBANE AUSTRALIA 1 UQBC has a long and proud history of developing athletes and supporting them to reach their potential as rowers and scullers. Founded in 1911, UQBC has been the Queensland nursery of Olympic oarsmen and women over the past 30 years. No other Queensland club has produced more Olympians from its squads than UQBC. UQBC athletes regularly make up a significant part of state teams and many go on to represent Australia on the world stage, whilst others will race locally at many club regattas and intervarsity competitions or simply row for fun and fitness. Whatever your aspirations are in your rowing careers UQBC has a program to assist you realise your ambitions. The Club has put together a strong coaching team to support and guide you on your rowing journey. You too can add your name to the UQBC Roll of Honour and GO FURTHER IN EVERY POSSIBLE FUTURE. Membership UQBC offers a wide range of memberships to suit any level of commitment. UQBC is one of the leading clubs in Queensland with an outstanding boat fleet, coaching and facilities. The culture of the Club is based on performance, respect, excellence and team work with all members and coaches helping to push and support each other at any level of the sport. UQBC is a great place to row if you’re thinking of attending UQ, though you don’t have to be a student to row for us! The club offers Junior, Intermediate, Intervarsity, High Performance and Masters programs for men and women members to reach their potential as oarsmen and women. In addition we offer Learn-2-Row programs for beginners of all ages. The Club operates a squad system which is broadly categorized under the following groupings Performance Group o Focused on making the State or National Teams o Ready for a competitive level of training o Can balance their lives so that all aspects of their life complement each other o Mostly comprised of more experience athletes but will include junior athletes with standout ability. Development Group o Capable of making the State of National Team in the future. o Open to underage athletes o Guidance on how to balance their lives to ensure all needs are met. o Comprised of athletes from 15yo through to adult athletes. o The aim of these athletes will be to transition into the Performance group over the next 12-24 months. UQBC has a long and proud history of developing athletes and supporting them to reach their potential as rowers and scullers. Coaching team for 2019-20 season

Richard Powell - Head Coach e: [email protected]

Richard has been a member of UQBC since a student athlete in 1980 and went on to be one of the club’s most decorated oarsmen competing at 6 World Championships, Commonwealth Games and 2 Olympic Games. Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Head Coaching role in addition his degree with majors in Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics. He has been coaching directly or consulting and mentoring coaches and athletes

one way or another since 1983. Richard brings a new dimension to the leadership of the Club’s coaching team and his ability to nurture and develop athletes to realise their potential.

Agustin Rodero – Performance Coach

Agustin joined the UQBC Coaching team in 2018. His background is in rowing and coaching, at both a national and international level. Agustin is a former Argentinian and South American rowing Champion and Argentinian International oarsman. Agustin’s coaching credits include U18’s National Coach for the South American Championships and he has been the U18’s Coach at Club Mendoza de Regatas Mendoza, Argentina 2010 - 2015 where he had an outstanding record of success coaching the Mens 8+

(undefeated Champions 5 years running) Men’s 4X (Undefeated Champions 4 years running) and Women’s 4- (Undefeated Champions 3 years running). Agustin lists his greatest achievement to date as coaching the JM1x to qualify for Youth Olympic Games. Rowing in Australia has always been something he has admired and he is excited to continue sharing his knowledge with the next generation. He is eager to prepare athletes to reach Nationals and direct them to achieve the best possible result. David Vandas – Performance Coach

David joined the UQBC Coaching team in 2018. A former oarsman in the Czech Republic, David rowed in the Czech 8+ at the world junior championships before joining the Czech Republic National team from 2008 to 2011 where he rowed lightweight 2-, 4- and 8+. He also competed in the University World Championship at Szeged, Hungary in the LW4-. Since 2012 he has turned his hand

to coaching and coached in France at ACBB rowing club and also coached juniors at his home club Bohemians Praha in the Czech Republic. David has extensive cross training experience with athletes in gym (weights), cross country skiing, cycling (road and mountain) and triathlons.

Caitlin Hockings – Performance Coach Caitlin commenced coaching at UQBC in 2017 with significant success in the Junior women’s squad. She is a current Queensland and Australian representative coxswain (World Champion in 2019 at the FISA World U23 Championships) and applies both her significant coxing skills and academic training to her coaching and development of athletes. Caitlin is currently studying a Bachelor of Health Sport & Physical Recreation and is

pursuing a career as a professional coach. Michael Russell – Performance Coach

Michael is a Rowing Australia accredited Level 3 - Performance Rowing Coach with over 10 seasons of school and 6 seasons club rowing coaching experience. Specialising in sculling (in particular lightweight women and para categories) Michael has coached crews and individuals to many State and National Titles and National Selection. Michael was selected as Head Coach of the Australian Rowing Team for the INAS Global Games 2019.

Blaine Heseltine – Performance Coach

Blaine is an Australian representative rower at U21 and Senior A level and a multiple Queensland and Australian Champion. Blaine has successfully applied the knowledge and experience gained as an international level athlete to his coaching where he has achieved an outstanding record of success at school level. He graduated in 2019 from UQ with a bachelor of electrical and biomedical engineering (honours). In addition to his coaching role, Blaine has recently been appointed as the

athlete liaison to the UQBC Board. Blaine is relishing the opportunity to apply his considerable coaching skills to develop athletes as part of the UQBC coaching team. Matthew Toon – Performance Coach

UQBC welcomes Matthew to the coaching team for the 2019/2020 season. With over 20 years coaching experience in schoolboy, state & national championship regattas, Matthew is a valuable addition to the UQBC coaching group. Matthew has coached at school boy 1st VIII level for many years and coached numerous Queensland youth teams. Matthew is excited about the opportunity to use his considerable skills to support UQBC athletes on their rowing journey.

Stephanie Krippner – Rowing Program Coordinator – e: [email protected]

Stephanie is a former UQBC and Queensland representative rower. She came back on board with the coaching team in 2017 and was appointed the Rowing Program Coordinator in 2018. Stephanie leads the Club’s Learn to Row Program, the Intermediate Program and College Rowing Program. She has coached in schoolgirls’ programs for seven years, and has coached the junior women’s development program, the college rowing program and the intermediate program at UQBC over a number of years.

Sporting scholarships

Since 1990, UQ – in partnership with Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland and UQ Sport – has proudly been offering sporting scholarships and athlete support programs to assist exceptional athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite-level sport. UQ Sports Achievement Scholarship Established in 2008, UQ Sports Achievement Scholarships are awarded to new and current undergraduate students who display elite ability and excel in their chosen sport. These year-long scholarships are funded by donors and by The University of Queensland to encourage and support scholarship holders to reach their full potential both in their studies and in their sport. The UQ Sporting Scholarship selection process is highly competitive and not all applicants who meet the eligibility criteria will be awarded a scholarship. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of State level sporting representation in their chosen sport to be considered. Available to: Current Student Level of study: Undergraduate, Postgraduate Coursework Year of study: 1st - 5th year Citizenship: Australian citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and NZ citizens Award value: $3,000 - $10,000 Duration: 1 year Clem Jones Sporting Scholarship Valued at $18,000 over 3 years, subject to annual review. Open to domestic full-time students who have at least 3 years remaining in their program. The Scholarship will be awarded to applicants who, in the opinion of the Committee, show the greatest merit as demonstrated by evidence of financial need, academic and UQ. Sport Ambassador Program (Open Level Representation Only) UQ Sport services valued at $1500 for one year. Open to all UQ domestic and international Students competing at an Open Level sporting achievements to date. At least one scholarship will be awarded to a Cricket athlete when applicable Regardless of your Scholarship application result, you may be eligible to join the UQ Elite Athlete Program, should you be accepted to study at UQ in 2020.

Elite Athlete Friendly University

The University of Queensland (UQ) is endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) as an Elite Athlete Friendly University. The UQ Elite Athlete program operates out of the UQ Sport Academy and provides support to elite student athletes as they pursue a dual career in sports and study. To be eligible for Elite Athlete status students must be representing Australia or a State or Territory of Australia in a ASC supported and recognised sport which rowing is. Should you require support to manage your elite level sporting commitments with your study just requires contact with the UQ Sport Academy. As an elite athlete you are eligible for a UQ Sport High Performance Pass, which provides a heavily discounted Gold Membership and discounted strength and conditioning services at the UQ Sport Academy. You will also have access to free Elite Athlete Workshops throughout the semester.

UQ Sport Competition Subsidy

The UQ Sport Competition Subsidy provides funding to assist talented student athletes at UQ to assist with out-of-pocket competition costs to compete at eligible national and international sporting events.

University of Queensland Blues Awards

To be awarded a University Blue is held in high esteem and is one of the highest accolades a university athlete can receive. The Blues Awards have a long tradition at UQ Sport and The University of Queensland. Since 1912, Blues and Half Blues awards have been presented to UQ students in recognition of outstanding sporting achievements, and for enhancing the reputation of university sport. Students must be members of UQBC to receive a rowing Blue or Half Blue.
