Duke-In Programs Duke-Approved Programs

Your family contribution will remain the same, provided the cost of the program doesn’t exceed the cost of a semester at Duke.

Financial Aid for Summer Programs*

You may receive financial aid for up to two Duke-In summer programs (and/or summer sessions in Durham).

No institutional aid provided for non-Duke summer programs.

*Available to undergraduate Duke students already receiving federal or institutional aid for study on the Durham campus. Eligibility varies per cost of program and family contribution.

Consult financialaid.duke.edu or call (919) 684-6225 for more information. Non-Duke students should consult their home institution regarding financial aid.

Duke has established robust financial aid programs to sup-port students’ global academic endeavors. Duke financial aid, as well as federal financial aid, can be used to study away.

Scholarship funding is also an option. Consider applying to a scholarship awarded uniquely to study away participants; or in-quire about using funds from your general scholarship to pursue a study away program.

Don’t let cost deter you.

"To say that my academic workload in Paris was heavy would be a major understatement, given that there was so much to learn in such a short period of time. Even visits to museums dou-bled as leisure activities and extensions of class sessions. This was especially true at the Louvre, the site at which our class did a scavenger hunt for famous pieces.

During the scavenger hunt, I stumbled upon Apollo Sauroctonos, one of multi-ple sculptures in a collection by Praxite-les, and following suit to many others,

I stood beside the statue and mirrored its pose. Many of the museum's pieces had elements of life and death in them, which was something new I learned during my visit.

I later looked into the history of the Lizard Slayer series, learning that one interpretation of the piece is the van-quishing of the plague and the con-quering of death. But, at the time, my primary concern was taking a picture with the world's first selfie!"

–Nelia Ekeji, Duke in Paris

SUMMER & SEMESTER – U.S.-BASED PROGRAMS

U.S.-BASEDDUKE-IN PROGRAMS

In addition to study abroad programs, the Global Education Office for Undergraduates administers a host of credit-bearing study away programs based in iconic locations around the United States. These innovative and academically stimulating theme-based programs offer a chance to extend your Duke experience to major U.S. hubs for finance, entrepreneurship, arts and entertainment, biology, and public policy.

At Duke, global doesn’t just mean abroad

Access to Industry Insiders“My greatest takeaway from the program was the numer-

ous opportunities to have one-on-one conversations with alumni. It was invaluable for me to learn about the different careers on Wall Street, directly from people currently working in finance jobs. I also was very surprised at how extensive the Duke network is in New York City and the willingness of alumni to help students interested in finance, like myself.”

–Gina Rhee Duke in New York: Financial Markets & Institutions

Experiences That Go Beyond Tourism“During my study away experience, I interned at the production company Moxie Pictures, while simultaneously filming my own short videos. As I explored the city with my camera, I fell in love

with it ... I no longer felt like a tourist, but an artist in the city.”

–Taylor Peterson, Duke in New York Arts & Media

STUDY AWAY AND BUILD YOUR NETWORK AROUND THE WORLD.

Position yourself to achieve your goals.

The connections you make with other people during a study away program can shape the path of your future in surprising ways. Whether it be members of your cohort from Duke or other universities, students at a foreign university, your host family, faculty members, internship supervisors, guest speakers, or even Duke alumni, you’ll interact with new people on a steady basis who could evolve into colleagues or mentors down the road.

INTERNSHIPSIn select cases, it is possible to complete an internship while you are doing a study away program. In addition to some internships abroad, GEO programs offer US-based internships in cities such as Washington DC, New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. A GEO advisor can help you find programs offering an internship component.

DUKE ALUMNIMany program activities strategically involve Duke alumni living and working in host locations. Alumni might offer their time as a guest speaker or host for behind-the-scenes tours, or as a resource for students looking to get plugged into an area and find opportunities.

NEW CONNECTIONSStudy away is about exploring what’s new and different, but it can also be a chance to bond with others around shared experiences and interests. Of all the people you’ll meet on your program, you never know who might end up referring you for an internship or employment, or who might write your next letter of recommendation for a scholarship, research opportunity, or graduate program.

STORIES TO SHAREWhat does a study away experience on your resumé say about you? For starters, it says you are curious, willing to try new things, and able to adapt to new situations. It also says you value intellectual pursuit. More specifically, your study away experience gives you a rich source of interesting stories that will help you naturally connect with people who also have a tie to the area where you studied.

This Is About You

When it comes to choosing a program, the array of options can be overwhelming. It might seem easier to follow friends’ recommenda-tions, but we encourage you to make study away be about your own path, putting emphasis on the program aspects that matter to you. Use the list below to evaluate your needs.

Considerations for Choosing a Program

ACADEMICS: How might study away tie into my academic interests and goals? What courses are offered? Which course credits would benefit me most?

LANGUAGE: What is the language of instruction? If it’s not my first language, what are the language requirements?

HOUSING: How much immersion with the host culture will the housing offer? Will I live with a host family? Will I live with other students?

PRE-PROFESSIONAL: Where around the world is current research or innovation happening in fields that interest me? Where could I learn from industry leaders? Where might I want to intern or work later?

TIMING: What programs are offered during the terms that work for me (summer, spring, fall, or full academic year)? Could I try a summer program first to see if I want to do a full semester later?

START PLANNING NOW TO MAKE STUDY AWAY WORK FOR YOU.

"Studying abroad in Russia has been one of the biggest adventures of my life so far. Coming in, I had only taken 2 semesters of Russian language and was quite nervous. Pushing myself to embrace a new language, culture, and lifestyle was incredibly exciting and I grew a lot over the course of the program.

By diving into the arts, culture, and language of St. Petersburg, it was possible to gain a more nuanced understanding of what it means to be Russian during such an uncertain period in their nation’s history, and to begin to understand the differences and similarities between their lives and ours."
