Best friends Scatterday, Kruse‘meant to always be together’

BATAVIA – In many ways,it only makes sense recentGeneva High School graduateClaire Scatterday and recentBatavia High School graduateLia Kruse are best friends.

Scatterday and Kruse wereborn in Fuzhou in JiangxiProvince, China, just threeweeks apart and were both ad-opted Sept. 15, 1997, when theywere 1 ½ years old. They alsoshared a crib while they wereliving in an orphanage in Chi-na and have grown up only afew miles from each other.

“It is kind of a miracle,”Scatterday said. “We weremeant to always be togetherand be best friends. We kneweach other before we knew ourparents.”

But for the first time intheir lives, Scatterday andKruse soon will be going theirseparate ways. Scatterday will

be going to Western Michi-gan University in Kalamazoo,Mich., after having graduatedfrom Geneva High School, andKruse will be going to Green-ville College in Illinois aftergraduating from Batavia HighSchool.

Even though they will begoing to different colleges,they said they intend to keepin touch with each other.

“We will probably see eachother on break,” Kruse said.“We won’t let our friendshipfade.”

Scatterday agreed.“I’ll probably visit her, and

she will visit me,” Scatterdaysaid. “We grew up being bestfriends. Why would we let thatgo?”

They both attend First Bap-tist Church of Geneva and lastyear went on a mission triptogether to Ecuador, wherethey built bridges and hosteda Vacation Bible School for thechildren of nearby towns.

“It’s really cool,” Kruse said.“We go to the same church andalways see each other.”

Because they look some-what alike, they say they are of-ten mistaken for being related.

“People always ask us if weare sisters,” Scatterday said.“Some people think we aretwins.”

They also share a love forsports, with Scatterday beinga Viking gymnast and Krusea Bulldog runner. But in someways, they are totally differ-ent from each other. For ex-ample, Scatterday is quick topoint out Kruse enjoys shop-ping for clothes but Scatter-day doesn’t.

“We’re mirror opposites,”Scatterday said.

Scatterday said she knowsthe two of them will remainclose even after they go awayto college. She is studying tobe a physical therapist assis-tant. Kruse wants to become ateacher.

“We thought we would beseparated for life when wewere adopted,” Scatterdaysaid.

Their adoption also broughttogether the Scatterday andKruse families. The two fam-ilies got to know each otherthrough the adoption process,and they traveled to China to-gether to the orphanage whereClaire and Lia lived.

“We met each other througha moms group that our adop-tion agency encouraged us tobe a part of,” said Martha Scat-terday, Claire’s mother.

Diana Kruse, Lia’s moth-er, said that Claire and Lia’sspecial bond was “divinely or-dained.”

“There is no other explana-tion,” she said.

Martha Scatterday andDiana Kruse also maintain astrong friendship.

“We’re BFF,” Diana Krusesaid. “We just went on spring

break together in Florida.”

GENEVA – Geneva PublicLibrary Board members May22 approved the selection of anew library director.

Following a closed session,board members unanimous-ly voted to offer a contract toChristine Lazaris at a salary of$91,000 a year. She has accept-ed the position.

“I think Christine will do agreat job here,” library Pres-ident Esther Steel said. “I amvery excited about the future.”

Lazaris was among threecandidates board membersinterviewed for the job. Thelibrary serves about 30,500 res-idents of Geneva and the sur-rounding area.

Lazaris currently servesas manager of access servicesat Skokie Public Library. Shepreviously served as head li-brarian at the Illinois Instituteof Art in Schaumburg.

It was not immediatelyknown when she would start.

The Geneva Public LibraryBoard in April accepted theresignation of Assistant Di-rector Matt Teske. Teske waslibrary director for six years,but resigned in January. Atthe same meeting where theboard accepted his resigna-tion, the board majority im-mediately rehired him as an

assistant director.Teske had taken time off in

November and December andhad said at the time of his res-ignation he had been dealingwith depression and anxiety.In his resignation letter, Teske

said serving as library direc-tor was not a good fit, but hewould do better as an assistantdirector.

Teske also had served as as-sistant director before becom-

ing director in 2008.

ELGIN – Elgin Communi-ty College learned it is one of448 educational institutionsin Illinois to receive a grantto enhance safety and securi-ty on campus, according to anews release issued by ECC.The Illinois Emergency Man-

agement Agency announced

the Illinois School and CampusSafety Grant Program earlierthis year. ECC was awarded$186,641.62 to fund two proj-ects, the release stated.

The first project is thepurchase of five additionalSTARCOM radios, which en-sure interoperable communica-tion between the ECC Police De-partment and its mutual aid fireand police partners. The other

project is the purchase and in-stallation of shatter-resistantglass and film in strategic loca-tions throughout the campus.

Tami Haukedahl, ECC’sdeputy chief of police, saidECC “has a well-earned rep-utation for being among thesafest campuses in the stateand country,” according to therelease.

These security enhance-

ments will greatly benefit thesafety of all ECC students,faculty, staff, administra-tors and visitors, Haukedahlsaid, according to the release.Gov. Pat Quinn recently an-

nounced grant awards total-ing $25 million to enhancesecurity at public elementa-ry and secondary school dis-tricts, community colleges andstate universities in Illinois.

The grants will support 1,312projects, including reinforceddoors, shatter-resistant glass,physical locks and other se-curity measures that enhancesafety for students, staff andvisitors, the release stated.

In 2012, ECC was named thefifth-safest college or universi-ty in Illinois by www.stateuni-versity.com, which was based

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP– Standing in a classroom ofempty desks with educationalposters plastered to the walls,Kane County Board memberDeborah Allan on May 22 askedthe teacher how he deals withkids who don’t want to be there.

“Are the kids willing to try?”asked Allan, D-Elgin.

Her question wasn’t prompt-ed by the teacher’s subject– math – but by the type of stu-dents he works with: juvenilesin custody for pending courtproceedings.

Allan, along with othermembers of the Public ServiceCommittee, was touring theKane County Juvenile JusticeCenter in St. Charles Township.The center – which is on thesame campus as the Kane Coun-ty Judicial Center and the KaneCounty Sheriff’s Office – is a de-tention facility for ages 10 to 17.

Ivars Spalis, the educationprogramcoordinatorforthefacil-ity’s school program, guided thecommittee through the center’sseemingly identical corridors,which had doorways to a library,computer lab, gym and, amongother rooms, living quarters.

About 60 juveniles were incustody May 22, Spalis said, not-ing youth come from such coun-ties as DuPage, DeKalb andKendall in addition to Kane.

The average stay is 12 days,he said, but some might staymuch longer. Days are brokeninto six 40-minute class peri-ods, Spalis said, but the centeris in the process of shifting theschedule to six 50-minute peri-ods so that the youths get thesame amount of class time aspublic school students.

There are four classroomteachers, whose students aregrouped by security rather thanby grade, Spalis said.

County Board members ex-pressed appreciation for whatthe teachers do.

“To walk into a situation likethis has got to be difficult,” saidBecky Gillam, R-West Dundee.“I think it’s commendable.”

GENEVA – Greta Wimberg-er said she knew she wantedto do her best in the May 25Multisport Madness TriathlonTeam Triathlon Festival.

“The support from my teamand the people who came outto watch kept me going,” saidthe 8-year-old Sugar Grove res-ident.

Cadence Fitness and HealthCenter in Geneva hosted theevent, now in its 14th year.

With a time of 17 minutes,30 seconds, Greta finished firstin her age group in the triath-lon’s junior division. As partof the triathlon, Greta com-peted in a 125-meter swim, a2-mile bicycle ride and a half-mile run.

She said she enjoyed bicy-cling the best.

“It wasn’t too hard, and itwasn’t too easy,” Greta said.“You got to go on a hill ratherthan being on flat ground.”

Her 6-year-old brother, Pe-ter Wimberger, also partici-pated. He also said he liked thebicycling portion of the triath-lon the best.

“It’s my favorite,” he said.He was eating a granola bar

to get his strength back, sayingthe event “was tiring.”

Their mother, Teri Wim-berger, said she was appre-ciative of the support that thespectators provided.

“Everybody cheers every-body on,” she said.

Sunny skies provided per-fect weather conditions for therace.

“We lucked out,” said racedirector John Lorenz, whoalso serves as the team direc-tor. “We couldn’t have askedfor a better day.”

More than 150 kids par-ticipated in this year’s youthtriathlon, exposing them towhat being a triathlon athleteis about. Lorenz said that wasideal for organizers.

“For us, it’s about gettingkids into the sport,” Lorenzsaid.

In addition, the USA Tri-athlon recently selected thisyear’s event to include a mixedteam relay super sprint seriesrace, allowing adults to com-pete in the race as well.

“Instead of just being kids,you have parents competing

with kids,” Lorenz said.With a time of 30 minutes

and 58 seconds, Cooper Lan-ganis, 16, of Cary, took secondplace in the triathlon’s elitedivision, which included a375-meter swim, a 6.2-mile bi-cycle ride and a 1.55-mile run.

“They’re all hard in differ-ent ways,” he said. “The runis the hardest because it’s thelast event.”

GENEVA – Kane Countyis working to provide outdoorrecycling bins outside of itsbuildings.

Recycling stations were in-

stalled this month at the KaneCounty Government Centerand the Kane County Court-house, both in Geneva, accord-ing to a county news release.

Existing bins at other coun-ty campuses – including theKane County Judicial Center

in St. Charles Township – willreceive retrofits in the comingmonth, the release states.

The project is being sup-ported with funds from theRiverboat Grant.

The recycling stations aremade from recycled plastic, de-

signed to be weather resistantand labeled for ease of publicuse. Each station has two open-ings, one blue Saturn-shapedopening for recyclable itemsand one black square openingfor trash.

“As you visit county build-

ings, please be mindful ofwhere you deposit your dis-cards, and recycle all paperand drink containers in theblue recycling bin,” the re-lease states. “Coffee cups,napkins, candy wrappers andfood all need to go in the trash/landfill bin.”

The release indicates thisproject was a team effort byrecycling program staff, facil-ities maintenance personneland the county’s custodialcompanies.

Just as the Nobel Prize marks excel-lence in achievement, the ownersof the Nobel House hope theirrestaurant represents excellence

in food and service.Geneva residents Jason Levin and

Dave Cilio on May 1 opened NobelHouse restaurant at 305 W. State St.in downtown Geneva in the space for-merly occupied by another restaurant,Tavolino.

The name of the restaurant alsopays homage to Geneva’s Swedishroots. Alfred Nobel, the founder of theNobel Prize, was a Swedish chemistand engineer. The bistro-style restau-rant offers chef-inspired Americancomfort food.

“You can have great food withoutwhite tablecloths,” said Nobel Houseexecutive chef Marshall McCarty, whohas worked in the restaurant businessfor 12 years.

Levin and Cilio have extensiverestaurant experience. They also oper-ate four other restaurants in Chicago,including Merkle’s Bar and Grill inWrigleyville in Chicago. McCartystarted working for Levin and Ciliowhile he was going through culinaryschool.

They extensively renovated thebuilding’s interior to achieve the lookthey wanted. For example, they toreout the building’s ceiling to expose thewooden timbers underneath.

“We saw these beefy, old woodentimbers that we liked,” Cilio said. “Itgives it an old, rustic look.”

Nobel House prides itself on itsfreshness.

“We cook everything from scratch,”McCarty said. “We are proud to say wedon’t bring in frozen products.”

Nobel House also smokes its ownmeats.

“It takes it from something that wastough into something that is tender,”McCarty said.

One of the restaurant’s popularitems is a turkey pastrami that issmoked for hours and piled high onmarble rye, McCarty said. NobelHouse also serves other sandwichesand burgers, along with wild salmon,salads and soup.

In addition, Nobel House offers veg-etarian options, such as its cauliflowersteak, which features a roasted cauli-flower with olive tapenade, sun-driedtomato and citrus vinaigrette.

“A lot of people are looking forsomething like that,” McCarty said.

For those beer connoisseurs, NobelHouse also offers a wide beer selec-tion. The restaurant has 30 craft beerson tap, and another 70 craft beers bythe bottle, McCarty said.

McCarty knows how popular craftbeer is these days.

“People want to have a large vari-ety,” he said. “Barbecue and craft beergo great together.”

Nobel House also serves beer mus-sels made with Penrose Brewing ProtoGradus, just one of the beers made atthe newly opened Penrose Brewery inGeneva.

Besides the items on its menu,Nobel House also features an ev-er-changing array of items on the“Market Chalkboard” displayed at theend of the restaurant’s bar, includingoysters, cheese and charcuterie, flat-breads and soups of the day.

“We want to keep it fresh,” McCartysaid. “Our flatbreads change almostdaily.”

Even though it has been open for

less than a month, Nobel House al-ready has built a following.

“The local people have been verywelcoming,” Cilio said. “We have aregular base of clientele coming in.”

Dan Cederquist wantedto find balance.

The Matchbookwinemaker had the desiredvineyard conditions in thesunny and warm DunniganHills of California to makethe chardonnay he desired.But he had to make a decisionon which direction to takewhen it came to winemaking.

As spring segues intosummer, Cederquist crafted anideal wine for a summer barbe-cue. Sit on the porch and takein the lively fruit notes that arecomfortable companions to thesunshine. There’s just enoughoak to add some spice anddepth to a wine that will com-pliment grilled fish, shrimpand salads.

Winemaker spotlightFruit was important for

Cederquist.He quickly rattled off all the

fruit flavors he finds pleasingin chardonnay. Yet, with 20percent new oak, Matchbookoffered a hint of oak.

“It’s a nice in-between,”Cederquist said. “I like thespicy notes new oak canimpart. But I love the melon,apple and pineapple character-istics of chardonnay. We don’tneed too much oak. I like thefruit components. They areimportant. I want a vibrant,fresh, lively feel.”

Matchbook has loads offruit up front and finishes withan oak spice and creme brûléecreaminess. It’s a challenge toget the mix right for Ceder-quist, just as it’s a daily taskduring the growing season tomanage the vineyard.

Harvest takes place two tothree weeks earlier than coolerclimate areas like the SonomaCoast, Russian River Valley or

Santa Barbara. An abundanceof sunshine makes canopymanagement vital.

A developed canopy is cutonly on one side, which shieldsthe fruit from the oppressivesun.

“It’s warmer and there ismore sun,” said Cederquistabout the Matchbook vine-yards in the Dunnigan Hills.“I was familiar with coolerclimate chardonnay from theRussian River Valley. But thefruit just does so well here.We get high pH and low acid,which results in rich chardon-nay, and we’ve embraced that.”

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Ittook 3 ½ hours of real time,waiting out a thunderstormthat gave way to a gorgeousdouble rainbow and endur-ing a physical, injury-riddledshowdown, but the St. CharlesEast girls soccer team finallyhas beaten St. Charles North.

And what a spot for theSaints to do so.

East triumphed in a drawn-out IHSA Class 3A Conant Sec-tional semifinal battle May 27to defeat top-seeded St. CharlesNorth 2-1 in what is believedto be East’s first win in the ri-valry series since the first yearafter St. Charles High Schoolsplit.

The Saints have had a fewclose calls – including settlingfor a tie after leading Northmost of the way during thisyear’s regular-season meeting– but the Saints finally solvedtheir crosstown nemesis. Eastsenior Shannon Rasmussensaid the Saints of the pastwould arrive at North match-ups early and “make it a hugedeal.”

“This year we decided totake it like a regular game,”Rasmussen said. “We didn’tget pumped up or anything. Wejust decided to stay confident,act like it’s a normal game andgo out there and do our thinginstead of worrying about whowe’re playing. It was about usinstead of them this year, andI think that’s what helped usa lot.”

The fourth-seeded Saints(16-4-2) advance to face thewinner of the May 28 Gene-va-Conant sectional semi-final Friday, May 30. TheGeneva-Conant match wassupposed to be played the nightof May 27, but coaches fromboth teams agreed to move itback a day since it would haveturned into a late-night affair,given the weather delay of al-

was elated about his team’sperformance – and his firstwin over North in his six-year tenure – although hispostgame joy was dampenedby a pair of injuries to RionGaffney and Hannah Rawson,both of which came after there-start with 17:41 to go in thesecond half.

Jennison didn’t blame theinjuries on the lengthy wait.

“I think it’s just the chanceof it’s soccer, collisions hap-pen, accidents happen,” Jen-nison said. “That is what itis when you play the game. I

hope those two are going to bealright because they’re qualitygirls. I hate to see that happento any player but especiallywhen they’re your own andtwo seniors as well. That’sheartbreaking.”

The match went into thelightning delay with Eastahead 2-1. All three goals camein the first half.

East took control with twoscores less than six minutesapart, the first coming on alow, well-struck shot fromabout 35 yards out by Eastmidfielder Kelli Santo Paulooff Amanda Hilton’s assist.

“Amanda always sees me

on that run,” Santo Paulo said.“She always plays me thoseballs. We work so well togetherin the middle.”

The Saints struck againwith 14:39 to play in the halfon Rasmussen’s long free kickfor a 2-0 lead. It was Rasmus-sen’s first goal off a free kickthis season.

“We actually had a prac-tice the other day, but I stayedafter to work on those,” Ras-mussen said. “[Jennison] justsaid hit far post, so that’s whatI was trying to do. It was closeenough for me to take a shotinstead of hoping to cross it in,so I just hit it far post and it

Sophie Pohl injected the NorthStars (17-5-2) with a dose of op-timism leading into halftime.Pohl brought North within 2-1with 9:32 to go in the first halfwith a sliding finish of HannaDurocher’s assist.

Durocher came close totying the score at the 21:40mark of the second half, buther point-blank shot went justwide.

The North Stars also hada few decent chances againstEast’s packed-in defense afterthe resumption, with JennyBarr, Alyssa Brandt and LizzieParrilli all cracking dangerousshots, although only Brandt’sfree kick required a stop fromEast goalkeeper Kendra Shee-han.

“I am thrilled that theyare this sad because all of theteam-building stuff that we’vedone to bring them together,which makes them fight, hasworked,” Vostal said.

Both teams emerged en-ergized after the long, tensedelay. The North Stars des-perately wanted the match toresume or East would havebeen declared the winner.

Santo Paulo said the Saintsexplored YouTube for somegoosebump-inducing, moti-vational speeches during thebreak.
