BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP

– Margo Cherrie smiled as she

stood in front of a placard on

a table March 26 at Marklund.

Meanwhile, employees and

visitors took turns signing

their names to be part of the

campaign to Spread the Word

to End the Word.

The word is, as literature

available at the event pointed

out, “the R-word,” a derogato-

ry term that once was consid-

ered more acceptable as a way

to describe those with disabil-

ities. Marklund is a nonprofitorganization that serves thosewith serious and profound de-velopmental disabilities andspecial health care needs, andCherrie, a case manager anda qualified intellectual devel-opmental professional, invit-ed anyone who came into thelobby to sign their name to thecause to fight the casual use ofthe term.

“They are signing theirname to signify that they areending the R-word,” she said, adding she has been a big sup-porter of that cause since hercollege days at Lewis Universi-

ty. Information on the cause canbe found at www.r-word.org.

Cherrie smiled as employ-ees Shannon Gardner and ColePaler signed their names. Shesaid visitors also had beensigning.

Gil Fonger, Marklund’spresident and CEO, said theword still is used by some peo-ple who might not realize theyare offending anyone. He saidolder people might be comfort-able with such a word, as it hada more common usage in thepast. He said he has heard itused by well-educated people.

At times, however, the

word is used intentionally bythose seeking to be insulting.Marklund officials shared suchan instance – the word was inan email recently received ad-dressing the Show You CareKane referendum, which wasdefeated last week. The refer-endum sought to raise about$13 million to be administeredby a disabilities board – alsoknown as a 377 board – to helpthose who are disabled.

Officials said the email wassent by an opponent of thereferendum who added thatit was for “people who aren’teven worthwhile members

of society.” Although Fongersaid such a sentiment stillwas the exception, rather thanthe norm, he did say someonestood up at a session address-ing the referendum and asked,“Why should we care aboutthese kids?”

He said he appreciatedCherrie’s efforts and waspleased that so many were ea-ger to sign the placard, whichfeatured signatures usingcolorful markers. Employeeshelped residents who neededassistance signing their names.

“Margo has been a great ad-vocate,” he said.

Geneva houses sprouting up in treesBy BRENDA [email protected]

GENEVA – Who wouldhave thought there would beany tree houses in Geneva –that is, houses on pylons up inthe trees – let alone three in arow and two for sale?

Yet, that was just the caseat 201, 205 and 211 OakwoodDrive in the city. The lattertwo recently have been for salewith contracts pending, saidJoyce Courtney of HomeCourtReal Estate, who listed the treehouse at 205 Oakwood Drive.

“It’s very unusual, espe-cially for our area, which isrelatively flat,” Courtney said.“It’s a very unusual situationbecause of the contour of theland. You look out the backand see this hill of trees, andyou just don’t realize you arein Geneva.”

Christie Allen Mortimer, who owns the tree house at211 Oakwood, said she and herhusband fell in love with it.

“We both love tree housesand were overwhelmed by theidea of living in one full time,”Mortimer said.

They spent four years fix-ing it up but ended up havingto sell it for a larger house,Mortimer said. The houseoriginally was built in 1976 forRalph and Lucille Little, whostill live in Geneva.

“We loved it there,” Lu-cille Little said. “It was a funhouse.”

Little said people thoughtthe lot was unbuildable, butthen she found a book called

“Hippie Houses” and got theidea to have it built.

“It was a great, fun house,

and we loved having the woodsall around it,” Little said. “Butas we got older – it was three

stories – we thought we betterstart looking for senior hous-ing.”

Sandy Bressner – [email protected]

Christie and Mark Mortimer stand in front of their house in Geneva, which was built in 1978. The home was built on pylons and is completely offthe ground, similar to a treehouse.

ST. CHARLES – John Han-son of St. Charles said he hasbeen making a popular andtasty appetizer for his familyfor years – shrimp with a ja-lapeño pepper tucked inside, wrapped in bacon and cookedon the grill.

“Every year, I go visitfriends of mine in Algonquin, and I bring this as an Easterappetizer,” Hanson said.

Then, Hanson brought theappetizers to Bruce Heidlauf’sChristmas party last year “andthey were gone in no time.”

Heidlauf, who owns MillRace Cyclery in Geneva, en-

couraged Hanson to bring hisjalapeño shrimp poppers tothe “60 Men Who Cook” Gene-va fundraising event. And sohe is.

“It’s fun and for a goodcause,” said Hanson, whoowns Prairie Piper plumbingcompany in St. Charles.

The sixth annual eventopens at 5:30 p.m. Friday,April 11, at the Kane CountyFairgrounds, 525 S. RandallRoad, St. Charles.

Tickets are $35 in advanceat the Geneva Chamber, 8 S.Third St., or at the Geneva His-tory Museum, 113 S. Third St.,or $40 at the door for partici-pants to sample appetizers, en-trées, side dishes and desserts.

The event raises money to ben-efit the Geneva History Muse-um, Lions and Rotary clubs ofGeneva and the Geneva Cham-ber of Commerce.

The local chefs volunteer toshare their culinary talents.Attendees vote for their favor-ites in each category – People’sChoice Awards – as well as thewinner of the best display orpresentation.

The ticket price includesfood, four chef votes and onebest display vote, but addition-al votes can be purchased thatevening as well as raffle tick-ets.

Heidlauf, who encouragedHanson to participate, saidthis is his sixth year as one of

the 60 Men Who Cook. His en-try this year will be beef stro-ganoff on bicycle pasta – andyes, the special-order pasta isin the shape of little bicycles,he said.

“We dress up with bikeaprons and jerseys,” Heidlaufsaid. “It’s a really fun event. It’sto support such great things inthe community – everybodyworking together for the good.”

Also participating is LindaKrawczyk of Kaneville Town-ship, who will be making salt-ed caramel chocolate pecanbars.

“I’ve been making this forfamily parties,” Krawczyk said.“They’re pretty good. I’m goingto be making them bite-sized

because they are pretty rich.”This will be the mother of

four’s first time at the event.“I’m doing this because I

volunteer at the Fox ValleyFood for Health, an organiza-tion that makes organic mealsfor cancer patients,” Kraw-czyk said.

Four culinary studentsfrom Geneva High School – se-niors Annie Rapach-Lagowskiand Victoria Ascencio and ju-niors Amie Randall and AllieStarr – will be participating asThe Crabby Cooks, making aclassic French dessert calledcroquembouche – pronounced“croken-boosh.”

“It’s a bunch of cream puffsin caramel glaze, and we putthem in a cone shape so theylook like a tree,” Rapach-La-gowski said. “It’s complicated. And all of it is scratch-made.”

It is their first time partici-pating, Rapach-Lagowski said.

“We thought it would be funfor our experience in the realworld,” she said. “We are allconsidering being in culinaryarts careers, so we’re lookingfor an honest reaction.”

Kane County Coroner RobRussell’s candy cookie recipecomes from an old family reci-pe he said he’s been eating for40 years.

“I make them with cocoa, peanut butter and oatmealcooked on the stove top, andthen they are dropped onto

waxed paper,” Russell said.“They are no-bake. I’m puttingmy own twist on this recipe.I’m putting a chocolate Kiss onit and calling it ‘Kiss of DeathBy Chocolate.’ “

Don Kramer is bringingprime rib. Kramer is a Re-publican who will be run-ning against Democrat WillieMayes Sr., for Kane Countysheriff in the November elec-tion.

What makes his prime ribspecial is the meticulous wayhe prepares the meat with aheavy coating of seasoningthat includes salt, pepper, gar-lic and Italian herbs that coverevery inch, he said.

“After I roast it, I let themeat rest 45 minutes so thejuices migrate to the outside,”Kramer said. “Then you getmeat that is pink from side toside without being raw in themiddle. That is the secret.”

No-refusal event nets 10 DUI arrestsBy ASHLEY [email protected]

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP– Kane County’s no-refusal op-eration last month stopped 10impaired motorists from driv-ing on St. Patrick’s weekend.

Kane County State’s At-torney Joe McMahon sharedthe results April 1 during hismonthly meeting with report-ers.

No-refusal operations aredesigned to expedite the book-ing process for those chargedwith driving under the influ-ence. Police work with an assis-tant state’s attorney to quick-ly obtain a search warrant tocompel a DUI suspect to submitto a blood-alcohol level test.

Held from 11 p.m. March 15to 3 a.m. March 16, this wasKane County’s fourth no-re-fusal event held in conjunc-tion with St. Patrick’s Day

and the 15th conducted sinceMay 2008.

Sixteen law enforcementagencies – including the KaneCounty Sheriff’s Office andthe Elburn, Geneva and St.Charles police departments –participated in the operation.

Authorities collected 10blood-alcohol content sam-ples, seven of which werebreath samples with readingsof 0.103, 0.143, 0.150, 0.164,0.191, 0.222 and 0.222.

The legal limit is 0.08blood-alcohol content.

Three blood samples havebeen submitted for testing.

The 10 individuals chargedwith DUI are expected in courtthroughout this month.

In other news, the State’sAttorney’s Office received11 calls on election day lastmonth, McMahon said, de-scribing the nature of thecomplaints as “relatively mi-

nor concerns.”Eight of the calls were re-

garding sign placement, an is-sue that arises every electioncycle, McMahon said. By law,he said, campaign signs mustbe 100 feet from the last interi-or door before a polling place, not the building’s entrance.

This means that, depend-ing on the polling setup, signs“could be right at the door ofthe building,” McMahon said.

Two voters also com-plained about voting machinemalfunctions, McMahon said. The problems were fixed anddid not prevent anyone fromvoting.

The final complaint wasabout a 17-year-old trying toregister to vote, McMahonsaid, referencing a complaintfrom Leslie Juby, a Gene-va School District 304 Boardmember, about her daughter’sexperience.

According to the latest data available fromthe National Institutes of Health, an estimated2.9 million Americans are living with “lowvision.” This term is a catchall phrase for sightthat cannot be corrected to (near-)normal withglasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Althoughit ranges from simply having blurry visionto more serious problems (such as doublevision), the immediate consequences oflow vision are an inability to perform dailyactivities such as reading a book or newspaper, crossing the street safely, or cooking a meal. While medicine or surgery does not offer acure, there are some practical steps that can betaken to maximize remaining sight. These mayinvolve magnifying devices, better lighting, orreading-assisting technology. P.S. The numberof Americans suffering from low vision isexpected to increase 72 percent by 2030, whenthe last of the Baby Boomers turns 65.

Fox ValleyWildlife Centerofficials work to help owl

By AL [email protected]

A young great horned owlhas been reunited with itsfamily at the Settler’s Hill GolfCourse, thanks to efforts fromvolunteers and officials withthe Fox Valley Wildlife Center,as well as the golf course.

A golfer on April 6 wassearching for a ball when hediscovered the owl, which hadfallen out of a tree. That set inmotion an effort to find a wayto get the owl back into thetree. That ultimately broughtin Ryan DePauw, a St. Charlesnative and a naturalist experi-enced in such efforts.

On the morning of April 7Fox Valley Wildlife CenterDirector Ashley Kendall hadbeen contacted, and she cameout to examine the bird. By theafternoon of April 7, DePauwwas scaling the tree.

The original nest couldn’tbe located. DePauw, who vol-unteers with the wildlife cen-ter, brought up a basket to at-tach to the tree. As volunteersand staff members watchedfrom below, the owl was putinto a bag and brought up toDePauw, who put it into thebasket.

Then, he said, it was time to“climb down and let mom dothe rest.”

Arden Zick, one of the vol-unteers and a board memberat the wildlife center, said thespectacle was “so rewarding.”

“We’ve got the feeling ofhope, and yet we’re nervousbecause there is no guaranteethat it’s going to work,” Zicksaid.

But good news followedquickly. DePauw said he re-ceived a call April 8 morningthat golf course workers re-ported that a parent owl hadjoined the young owl. And Zicksaid Kendall returned to thesite Wednesday and reportedthat Kendall, too, saw a parentowl in the vicinity.

DePauw said he is trainedspecifically for such work. Hesaid he underwent trainingand took courses in arboricul-ture and learned “to help putbaby birds back in trees.” Hesaid it’s something that comesup maybe one to four times ev-ery year. In this case, he said,it was determined that theyoung owl might be in dangerand “that’s when we inter-vene.”

He said there is urgency fora couple of reasons. If there areno siblings, parents might notcontinue to wait if they cannotlocate their young. And also,he said, it could have been indanger from a coyote.

Zick said the effort wasimpressive and said the stafffrom the golf course had been“as excited and hopeful as wewere.”

“It really was a team effortof people who wanted to seethis little bird reunited withits parents,” she said.

Courtney’s design was chosen out of

seven entries submitted by ECC students.

Courtney, who is president of ECC’s Spartan

Design Club, is studying graphic design and

graduates from ECC in May.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric

Schelkopf spoke to Courtney about his

winning design, along with Seigle’s President

Mark Seigle.

Schelkopf: How did you come upwith the concept

for your design?

Courtney: The backs of their trucks were

just painted red up to this point. And they

told us to come up with concepts. They really

left it open-ended. They told us to go at it.

That’s where the idea to have a person

in the back of the truck, with boxes behind

them, that was where my concept came in.

We kind of kept it a little open-ended,

so the client had room to put in their little

personal touches, like their phrase and their

theme and stuff like that.

Schelkopf: How did Seigle’s work with you on the

project?

Courtney: They told me that they wanted to

use the catch phrase “Get Cookin’.” And they

were thinking about having their own em-

ployees in the back dressed in kitchen garb.

So, from there we had to set up the photo

shoot. Mark brought in a photographer, and

he and I did the photo shoot.

He told me, “I have eight employees and

eight trucks. Do you think that’s doable?”

I told him, yeah, we can definitely do that.

It’s going to be an individual design for each

truck.

Because it’s such a big image and you

need such a high resolution, I had to take for

each one of the trucks three different images,

three different photographs, and put them all

together.

There’s a total of eight designs featuring

eight different employees.

Schelkopf: I understand this was the first time you

had directed a photo shoot. Did you feel overwhelmed?

Courtney: It was definitely nerve-wracking

at first, not so much because I didn’t think I

could do it, but more so because this was a

really big opportunity for me and I wanted

to do everything I could possibly do to show

myself off.

It’s a big client, and it’s a name that I’ve

known my whole life growing up here.

Schelkopf: What was the biggest challenge of the

project?

Courtney: Making sure that all the seams

aligned. You have to make sure that every-

thing lines up perfect.

Schelkopf: Would you like to domore projects like

this in the future?

Courtney: Yes. It really pushed me. The

more I can learn, the more opportunities I

have.

Schelkopf: Mark, what do you like about the

design?

Mark Seigle: It’s exactly what we wanted.

We wanted people to take notice, and they

have.

16 MYSTERY DINERRestaurant reviews

Isacco’s serves Northern Italian cuisine

What sets Isacco’s Kitchen in St. Charles apartfrom other Italian restaurants in the areais the food. The family-owned restaurant

serves recipes hailing from Northern Italy, a pleas-ant differentiation from the usual southern-Italiancuisine served at most Italian eateries.

Isacco’s dinner menu items include homemadeduck ravioli, with sage, butter, smoked prosciuttoand Parmigianino; Berkshire pork chop Milaneseon a saffron risotto; and braised short ribs cannel-loni with sautéed spinach and mushroom in a portreduction.

A cheery, yellow building situated on a side-streetbehind downtown St. Charles’ busy Route 64, Isacco’sKitchen has an outdoor dining area that is a perfectspot to eat and drink in the warmer months. Therestaurant has covered outdoor dining with ivorycurtains that sway in the breeze, in addition to itscobbled patio decorated by a canopy of café lights.

A quaint, relaxing atmosphere awaits inside. Thebar area exudes rustic charm with earthy featuressuch as wood and a Napa Valley wine barrel anchor-ing the center of the room.

The relaxed vibe continues around the cornerinto the intimate dining room.

Isacco’s is comparable in price to St. Charles’other Italian restaurants, with entrée prices rangingfrom $18 to $28 for dinner. If that’s too expensive, then visit for lunch. You can get some of the sameentrees for less.

Isacco’s dishes are made to order and use freshingredients, including hand-made pasta.

My dining companion and I visited for lunch ona Friday and had the place to ourselves. The servicewas impeccable, and the food matched. The restau-rant also has an extensive wine list.

Our table was fit with a brown bag filled with afew pieces of warm bread and a scoop of butter on theside.

Each menu item is thoughtfully prepared andcreative. I ordered the Crab Ravioli Diablo withshrimp and scallops in a spicy vodka sauce, whichis available on the lunch menu for $18 and on thedinner menu for $26. Normally not one for spiciness,as it has a tendency to overpower other flavor com-ponents in a dish, I decided to take a chance on therecommendation – a risk well worth the reward. The

scallops melted in my mouth, and the shrimp were

robust and cooked perfectly.

My dining companion ordered the Seared Ahi

Tuna Salad ($15) layered with mango papaya salsa

and avocado. The searing on the tuna was perfection,

and the fruit gave the salad a citrusy zest that rein-

vigorated the tuna. The dish is a perfect choice for

outdoor dining as it is healthy, cool and refreshing.

Don’t expect entrée leftovers from Isacco’s Kitch-

en; the dishes have just enough to stave off hunger,

but not enough to put you into food coma. My dining

companion and I each finished the complimentary

bread and may as well have licked our plates clean.

Other dishes that caught my eye were the fried

dates and beet salad ($10) with goat cheese and bal-

samic dressing; butternut squash ravioli ($12) with

salsiccia and creamy asiago sauce; Ossobuco ravioli

($14) with Italian bacon, sage-butter sauce and pista-

chio; and the mushroom risotto ($14) with chicken, to

name a few.

During our inaugural visit to Isacco’s, our waiter

told us to start from the top of the menu and on

subsequent visits work our way down, because – as

first-timers – we would probably be back. At Isacco’s,

that’s a commitment worth honoring.

BATAVIA – Statistician Edward Tufte will showthat the gap between art and mathematics is small-er than one may think. Tufte will use the compu-tational visualization methods developed by NobelPrize-winning physicist Richard Feynman to createcerebral works of art.

Beginning Saturday, April 12, Tufte will showmany of his pieces at Fermilab in Batavia, for a10-week exhibit illuminating Feynman’s diagrams, which still define how physicists visualize the phe-nomena they study, according to a news release.

Made of stainless steel, Tufte’s sculptures bringFeynman’s diagrams to three-dimensional life.Tufte’s installation will fill the second-floor art gal-lery in Fermilab’s Wilson Hall and will open on theevening of April 12, with a special lecture at 7 p.m.and a concert at 8 p.m. by Huun-Huur-Tu, a group ofthroat singers from the small region of Tuva.

Tufte’s installation, titled “The Cognitive Art ofFeynman Diagrams,” is the centerpiece of a visualand auditory Feynman celebration at the labora-tory, one that will include a lecture, a concert andthe display of a van and an Airstream trailer, alsoknown as the “Interplanetary Explorer.” The Fer-milab site is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.,seven days a week.

Tufte himself will be available to kick off theexhibit with a reception in Fermilab’s Wilson Hallfrom 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16.

The public is invited to attend the reception forfree, but space is limited. To register, visit www.fnal.gov/pub/tufte/register.html.

“This is going to be an extraordinary set ofevents here at the laboratory,” said Fermilab Direc-tor Nigel Lockyer in the release. “It’s an honor forus to host an artist and designer of Edward Tufte’sprominence and to be able to tie his exhibit into alarger retrospective of the life and work of RichardFeynman.”

Feynman’s friend, Ralph Leighton – as a specialpart of Fermilab’s Feynman celebration – willdeliver a 30-minute talk before the April 12 concert, titled “Richard Feynman’s Fantasy: The MarvelousStamps of Tannu Tuva.”

Leighton also will bring with him the famous“Feynman van.” Purchased by Feynman in 1975,the Dodge Tradesman Maxivan is adorned with im-ages of Feynman diagrams. Feynman used the vannot only to commute to and from work when he wasa professor at the California Institute of Technolo-gy, but also to explore remote areas of the AmericanWest with his family during summer vacations. After Feynman’s death in 1988, Leighton inheritedthe van and used it in 1993 to transport the Tuvanthroat singers during their first tour of California.

The Feynman van, along with Tufte’s “Interplan-etary Explorer,” will be on display outside WilsonHall for the duration of Tufte’s exhibit and can beviewed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

Tickets for Huun-Huur-Tu’s performance are $28and can be purchased by calling 630-840-2787 or vis-iting the box office online at www.fnal.gov/culture/NewArts/arts_tickets.shtml.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Ramsey Au-ditorium, with the pre-concert lecture by Leightonbeginning at 7 p.m.

Fox Valley Repertory’s production of“Cheaper by the Dozen” is an invitationinto the living room and lives of one ex-

traordinary family.Based on the beloved American memoir

by siblings Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth, thecoming-of-age comedy – adapted by ChristopherSergel – is a relatable story of teenage rebellion, selfishness, sacrifice, love and the preciousnessof time spent, even if efficiently, together as afamily.

Directed by Vance Smith, the show beginswith two of the older Gilbreth siblings (playedby Grace Etzkorn and Josh Greiveldinger)looking back on their childhood during the timeimmediately preceding the death of the familypatriarch and king of efficiency, Frank GilbrethSr. (Michael Dailey), in the 1920s.

The title of the biographical story comes froma favorite joke made by the childrens’ fatherwhen asked why he and his wife (played by Lau-ra Sturm) had so many kids. He would respond,“You know, they come cheaper by the dozen!”

With 12 kids to wrangle, Frank Gilbreth Sr.rules the roost by means of dictatorship posingas “democracy.” His “what-I-say-goes” parentingstyle is relatable, as well as humorous, especiallyas the eldest daughters start taking stock in theproblems that plague any angst-fueled teenagegirl – boys.

The show employs 13 cast members and 10understudies as Fox Valley Rep’s largest actingcompany in its history of professional produc-tions, according to artistic director John Gawlik.Eleven actors hail from Fox Valley Rep’s ownperforming arts academy, including NathanCastagna (Fred), 12, of Geneva; and Erika(Lillian), 12, and Keira Denker (Jackie), 10, of St.Charles.

The meticulously-designed living-room setstays the same throughout the show, but the

story bounces back and forth through time viaflashbacks had by the story’s tellers – Ernestineand Frank Gilbreth – who provide profundityand nuance to the story as they unravel theintricate pieces of their past as it leads up to alife-changing juncture.

Etzkorn delivers a natural and distinctperformance as Ernestine, breathing life, subtlevariation and well-timed humor into her role. Itcomes as no surprise that the high school junioralso recently appeared on the NBC televisionseries “Chicago Fire” as Sophie; she is a talentedactress who has the goods. Kelsey Sante, whohas trained with Acting Studio Chicago andColumbia College, also delivers an adept perfor-mance as Anne, the eldest daughter.

The final scene is weighted by the foretoldgravitas of events to come, especially since manyof the characters are unaware of what is aboutto happen or even that their father is sick. Theemotionality of the scene was not lost, which aquick scan of the crowd confirmed. Audiencemembers wiped away tears over an inevitableand greatly feared part of life – the death of aparent.

Rich Harvest Farms to host LPGA tourneyBy KEVIN DRULEY

[email protected]

Rich Harvest Farms ownerJerry Rich watched the weekof March 31’s announcementof the inaugural LPGA Inter-national Crown field online.

That’s about the only part ofthe operation he’s approachedstagnantly.

With the biennial Crowncoming to Rich’s Sugar Grovegolf course in 2016 – and ideal-ly beyond – after July’s debutevent at Caves Valley in Ow-ings Mills, Md., there’s hardlybeen a hiccup in preparation.

“This is really somethingthat’ll be very, very special,”Rich said April 3, “especial-ly the way that we’re goingabout energizing all the ethnicgroups in Chicago.”

More expansive than theUnited States-against-Europeformat of the complementarySolheim Cup, which Rich Har-vest hosted in 2009, the Interna-tional Crown is composed of 32

players from eight countries.Working with LPGA offi-

cials, Rich helped launch thefour-day match-play competi-tion after routinely consultingthe Rolex World Rankings andnoticing the global scale. Thesame rankings helped deter-mine the Crown field.

The United States, SouthKorea, Japan, Thailand, Spain,Sweden, Chinese Taipei andAustralia will participate atCaves Valley. Rich and Co. areseeking a corporate sponsorthat would help Rich Harvestbecome the Crown’s long-termvenue

Rich said 450 volunteers al-ready are on board for 2016. Al-most 1,600 volunteers boostedthe effort in 2009, when the Sol-heim Cup attracted about 120,000spectators over four days.

“ S o t h e c o m m u n i t i e saround Sugar Grove – and thattakes in quite an area; I mean,through Kane County andwhat have you – everybody isextremely excited about it,”Rich said.

Among the Solheim gal-lery were 4,000 to 5,000 Illinoisprep girls athletes invited tothe grounds. Rich, persistent-ly committed to growing golf, still finds fuel in those bygoneconversations.

“I talked to a lot of them, andthey said, ‘Mr. Rich, you know,we didn’t even know what theSolheim Cup was,’ ” Rich said.“They had never heard of it un-til we invited them, and theycame on the grounds and theylearned all about it and theysaid, ‘Wow, this is really some-thing.’ ”

With a special event forhigh school and junior highgirls players from five statescoming to Rich Harvest laterthis year, Rich’s staff remainsbusy with more urgent mat-ters, as well. The course, homeof the Northern Illinois men’sand women’s golf teams, alsowill host a 2014 NCAA men’sregional and The Western GolfAssociation’s 2015 WesternAmateur and 2017 CentennialWestern Junior.

Rich, an NIU alumnus, speaks passionately abouteach endeavor, but for now,the Crown arguably puts thebiggest glint in his eye.

“It’s so everybody can ben-efit,” he said. “The countyas well as the communities. That’s what it’s all about at theend of the day.”

National Library Week isApril 13-19 this year. It’s a timeto celebrate and support yourschool library and your neigh-borhood library, and to learnmore about what makes librar-ies great. There’s something special

about libraries — they are quietplaces to think, read and buildyour brain power while sur-rounded by good books. Whenyou’re in need of somethinggood to read, never underes-timate the power of a goodlibrary — and a good librarian— to help you. Children’s librar-ians are excellent resources tohelp you ind the books youwant to read, whether an ad-venture story to keep you en-thralled, a funny book to makeyou giggle or a history book tohelp you learn about the past. There’s always another bookout there to read, so take advan-tage of your library resources, and ask your librarian for helpinding a good book.

D.E.A.R. motto

D.E.A.R. is a motto you mightsee around your school or li-brary. It stands for “Drop every-thing and read,” and serves asa reminder to ind some time, every day, to sit down and reada book. This month, make a prom-

ise to ind at least 20 minutesevery day to drop everythingand read. To help you do that, follow these steps to make aD.E.A.R. diary to keep track of

the books you are reading. For your D.E.A.R. time, it

doesn’t matter what you’rereading, as long as you haveyour nose in a book. Just pickone of your favorites.

Create a diaryHere are a few steps to help youmake a D.E.A.R. diary:

1Grab about 15 pieces of paper.Should be 8.5 x 11, either ruled

or unruled.

2Stack the paper together andfold them in half, so they re-

semble a book.

3Find a stapler, and place twostaples along the fold. Alter-

natively, you can punch two holesin the fold. Use a piece of ribbonor yarn to tie the book togetherthrough the holes.

4Use crayons, pencils or mark-ers to create a cover that is in-

spired by books. Make it creativeand fun.

5Read for 20 minutes eachday. After each time you read,

spend the next five to 10 minuteswriting a short reflection aboutwhat you read that day. If you areinspired to draw, you can do that, too. Make sure to write down thedate and the time you spent read-ing.

6At the end of the month, youshould have a good record of

all the books you read that month.

Drop everything and readdoesn’t have to be for kidsonly — big brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandma andgrandpa, and even mom anddad can dedicate time to readingevery day. This April, encourage your

whole family to get together andread!
