D-304 central office renamed for CoultrapBy BRENDA [email protected]

GENEVA – Harry Coultrap,Geneva School District 304’sfirst superintendent, was hon-ored and remembered Sept. 28in a ceremony in front of thenewly renamed administra-tion center – the Coultrap Ed-ucational Services Center – at227 S. Fourth St., Geneva.

About 50 people attendedthe ceremony, which includedopening a time capsule fromthe original Coultrap school’s1923 cornerstone when the90-year-old building was torndown earlier this year. Someof the bricks from that build-ing were used to build the signand the walkway to it, officialssaid.

Coultrap’s grandchildren,Paul and Martha Coultrap,thanked the district for creat-ing a permanent reminder oftheir grandfather’s contribu-tion to the Geneva community.Coultrap served as superinten-dent from 1912 to 1950. He diedin 1963.

“It was over 100 years agothat my grandparents first set-tled in Geneva,” Paul Coultrapsaid. “Harry Coultrap had ahuge impact on the commu-nity of Geneva. After havingbeen gone 50 years, his legacycontinues within this commu-nity.”

Martha Coultrap said shewas honored by those whocame to the ceremony.

“When my grandfather waswooed by Geneva – they werein Elgin – and Grandma packeda lunch and they came down,”Martha Coultrap said. “He hadhis interview, and they wentover and sat on the courthousesteps and ate their lunch andlooked at each other and said,‘This is a nice community.’ Ifthey had been here today, theywould just be so amazed andwould say, ‘This is a nice com-munity.’”

School board member KellyNowak recounted Coultrap’slegacy in the district and thecommunity.

“I really think that it is ourcommunity [that] was proba-bly more honored by his ser-vice,” Nowak said. “He did somuch for the students in thiscommunity, and his vision …really is still present in our ac-ademics today.”

Nowak said Coultrap wasnoted for his devotion to con-tinuing professional develop-ment.

“Even then, our missionwas to develop lifelong learn-ers, and this is actively mod-eled by every member of ourprofessional staff,” Nowaksaid. “He retired in 1950, andfrom that time until his deathin 1963, Mr. Coultrap and hiswife, Anna, lived at 207 LoganAve., across the street from theold Geneva High School.”

The school named for himwas dedicated 55 years ago tothe day that the administra-tion center took on his name– as Coultrap Junior High – onSept. 28, 1958, according to thedistrict’s history. It became amiddle school in 1968 and wasconverted to an elementaryschool in 1994.

It was closed as an atten-dance center in 2009. The Coul-trap facility was torn downthis year, as it was deemed tooexpensive to maintain. It wasthe only school in the districtto be named after a person

rather than a geographic loca-tion, officials said.

Paul Coultrap reflected onhow his grandfather’s natureserved him as the school dis-trict’s leader.

“I was five [years old] whenmy grandfather died, so I havelimited memories of him,” PaulCoultrap said. “The most vividmemory I have involved a canof apricots. My grandmotherwas in the hospital, and myparents were visiting. I was tooyoung to go to the hospital andstayed with my grandfather attheir house in Geneva.”

Coultrap said he cut his fin-ger with the can opener.

“I still have the scar,”Coultrap said. “Being a kind, caring, compassionate man,he demonstrated all of thosequalities as he mended myfinger. Harry Coultrap servedas superintendent of Genevaschools for 38 years. Caring, kind and compassionate arethe perfect words to describea man who put his fingerprinton a school system he wouldlead for almost four decades.”

Coultrap said under hisgrandfather’s leadership, kin-dergarten classes began, amanual arts department wasformed and home economicsand music classes became partof the curriculum.

“I often wonder what hewould think of Geneva schoolstoday,” Coultrap said. “I thinkhe would be truly proud ofthem. ... I think most of all, hewould be proud of what a great

school system Geneva has be-come.”

As the Coultraps opened thetime capsule, they removeditems such as the district’srecords of buying the land tobuild the school, a copy of theGeneva Republican, a year-book and some coins. Superin-tendent Kent Mutchler said theitems would be put on displayat the administration centerfor public viewing.

A longtime Geneva familyis helping to host a fundrais-er for the Misericordia Heartof Mercy home in Chicago, where former Geneva residentAndrew Althoff, 30, has livedfor the past four years.

Althoff ’s sister , AmyDrake, said many residents’families host fundraisers forMisericordia – a residentialcommunity for people withmild to profound developmen-tal disabilities. Drake said Mi-sericordia is a nonprofit or-ganization that’s run mainlyby volunteers. Residents whoare able also help in variousjobs, such as recycling, andworking at the campus bak-

ery and greenhouse.“Misericordia is kind of un-

like most places,” Drake said.“They just have everythingthere. They have a restauranton their campus. It’s staffed byvolunteers and also staffed bypeople who are high-function-ing enough to work there.”

The fundraiser, Mis at the

Zoo, is a family-friendly eventat Brookfield Zoo scheduledfor Sunday, Oct. 6. Admission, which is $50 a adult and $25 achild, includes passes to spe-cial exhibits, such as a dolphinshow and “Dinosaurs Alive!”

The day will include a raf-fle, the “Hungry as a Bear Pic-nic Lunch,” a DJ and cash bar, games and activities for allages, entrance to the zoo andparking. Raffle prizes includeNotre Dame tickets, ChicagoBears tickets and AmericanGirl packages. The event willbe from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.,and tickets can be bought atwww.misatthezoo.com.

Drake said her parentshave lived in Geneva for about25 years, and Althoff attendedGeneva schools. She said heoften could be seen riding hisbike and had many friends inthe Geneva Police Department.

She said in his time at Mi-sericordia, Althoff has thrivedand has worked several jobson campus.

“Drew has really liked itthere,” she said. “I think he’sreally comfortable there.”

Drake said she got the ideafor hosting the fundraiser atBrookfield Zoo because sheknows someone who worksthere. She said she later real-ized that the zoo has been in-volved with Misericordia andwas awarded a Chicago Emmyfor a video that Brookfield Zooproduced with Misericordia.

The Althoff family is host-ing the fundraiser with theStiefels family of WesternSprings, who also have a fam-ily member living at Miseri-cordia.

“We’ve been lucky. We’vehad a lot of companies donate[toward the fundraiser]. It wasespecially nice that Genevacompanies donated,” Drakesaid, adding that Geneva busi-nesses included the HerringtonInn & Spa, Villa Verone andChazio’s Hair Colour Salon.

School athletes are required to schedule aphysical exam at the start of the season to en-sure that nothing stands in the way of achievingoptimal performance. In addition to this exam,it makes sense to undergo a comprehensiveeye exam as well. Strong vision is essential toan athlete’s performance, and anyone in needof vision correction should be fitted with com-fortable contact lenses. Beyond that, athletesshould be aware that dynamic visual acuity, eyetracking, depth perception, and visual reactiontime are among the vision-related issues thatcan affect performance. Once athletes are con-fident that these factors have been successfullyaddressed, they should take the necessary fur-ther step of safeguarding their eyes with protec-tive eyewear. P.S. As the term “eye-hand coordi-nation” suggests, catching or hitting a ball relieson proper information from the vision systemto guide the hands.

Comcastmodifyingbasic package

GENEVA REPUBLICAN

GENEVA – Geneva custom-ers currently receiving Com-cast cable’s “Limited Basic”service without any equip-ment will need to have devicesadded to their TVs to maintainexisting programming.

Comcast began encryptingits digital network signal for“Limited Basic” services Sept.24. Encryption will reduce theneed for home service callsand provide enhanced net-work security, according toComcast.

When “Limited Basic” ser-vice is encrypted, all Xfinityvideo customers will needequipment supplied by Com-cast connected to each TV tocontinue receiving services.

Customers who have a set-top box, digital adapter or re-tail “CableCard” device con-nected to each TV or subscribeto a higher cable package, willnot be affected by this change.

Comcast customers with-out equipment can receive freedevices without a service feefor a limited time, according tothe company. Comcast was re-quired by the FCC to send no-tices to customers announcingthe encryption changes.

Home sales increase, prices stablefor August in Tri-Cities, Kane

By JONATHAN [email protected]

The local housing mar-ket in the Tri-Cities andelsewhere in Kane Countycontinued to stabilize as thesummer home buying seasondrew to a close.

According to the latestround of home sales datafrom regional real estatetrade groups, more homessold in the region in August, and home prices – even forforeclosures – held steady.

“Things in this marketjust feel healthy right now,”said Leslie Ebersole, a realestate agent with Baird& Warner in St. Charles.“Things can still get better, but we are in a much betterplace now.”

In the Tri-Cities of St.Charles, Geneva and Bata-via, combined, 165 homessold last month, an increaseof 18.7 percent from August2012, according to informa-tion from the MainStreetOrganization of Realtors,

a trade group representingreal estate agents in the Chi-cago area.

In Kane County, overall, the statewide Illinois Associa-tion of Realtors reported that776 homes sold in August, anincrease of 14.5 percent.

Those increases includeda relatively large number ofhomes sold through foreclo-sure or short sale, as well.

In the Tri-Cities, for in-stance, the so-called “dis-tressed properties” account-ed for about 25.5 percent of allhomes sold in August. Thatmarked an increase from Au-gust 2012, when 22 percent ofhomes sold in the Tri-Citieswere considered distressed.

In all, 42 home sales in Au-gust were either bank-ownedforeclosures or short sales.

However, homes sold “tra-ditionally” – meaning, sellerto buyer with no lender inter-mediaries – also increased 14percent in August.

The increased sales activi-ty appears to have helped sta-bilize home prices, as well.

GENEVA – Where can yougo to get homemade mustard, quiche, a spicy organic veggieburger and locally grown pickledasparagus? It’s all being servedunder the canvas tents at theGeneva French Market, whichstarted in May and is open rainor shine from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sun-days through Nov. 10. The mar-ket is in the parking lot at SouthStreet and Fourth Street at theMetra station in Geneva.

Several vendors sell theirfresh produce, as well as locallymade honey, gluten-free selec-tions, breads, cheeses and bakedgoods. Customers can eat somedishes on site or buy frozen dish-es to make later. Many of the foodvendors there work to provideproducts that are made with lo-cally grown ingredients. Eachhas its own niche – it’s just a mat-ter of carving some time out ofa Sunday to stop by the outdoormarket.

The following is a look atsome of the vendors.

Inglenook PantrySome vendors, including the

Inglenook Pantry in Geneva, canrarely be seen outside of a farm-ers market or catering gig. MarkWeaver, who owns the businesswith his wife, Connie, said theyused to have a storefront, butnow rent a kitchen in Genevaand focus on catering and farm-ers market events.

On Sunday, they served upegg sandwiches, quiche, scones, margarita pizzas and sweets, such as cookies and scones. MarkWeaver said he and his brotheropened the business in 1970 inElgin, following a family tradi-tion of running a farmers marketstand like their parents did onthe East Coast.

Mark Weaver, who is Church

of the Brethren, said the food atInglenook Pantry is made in thePennsylvania Dutch tradition, which means they try to use asmany local resources as possibleand make as much of their foodby hand as they can.

“My wife’s very good at bak-ing, so she does most of that. Wemake our own ice cream,” hesaid. “All of the vegetables arefrom this market or the Batavia[farmers] market. We try to be asperfect as we can.”

Orchard PatisserieAround the corner from the

Weaver’s stand is the OrchardPatisserie, owned by Tom Merz, who left his career as a chemistto pursue a bread-baking busi-ness.

He said his homemade crois-sants, which can be bought plainor with one of three fillings, areconsistently a big hit. When he’snot working the Geneva FrenchMarket or a farmers market, he’sbaking breads for PreservationBread & Wine in Geneva.

In addition to muffins andscones, Merz bakes up fresh ba-guettes, honey walnut rolls andcheese-filled breads, which aremade much like a cinnamon roll, only with cheese.

“I went to a French pastryschool. When I first started this,I thought I would be doing morepastries,” he said. “But I enjoybaking bread more.”

Lou’s Old FashionedUsing old family recipes,

Lou’s Old Fashioned offers a va-riety of canned products, such assalsas, sandwich spreads and themost recent addition, originalbread and butter pickles. HomerCox, who was running the stand

at Geneva’s market on Sunday, said all of the products includeingredients grown on a farm inDeKalb.

Canned foods include pickledbeets and horseradish, pickledgarlic, dilled Brussels sproutsand dilled green beans. There’salso a selection of jams, such asraspberry rhubarb, and spreads, such as jalapeño mayo and mus-tard, as well as apple and pump-kin butter.

The Bleu OliveBob Coffey, owner of the

Warrenville-based Blue Olive, has been selling imported oilsand vinegars for the past fiveyears. While he still sells thoseitems, his newest product –homemade mustard – has gaineda lot of traction lately.

Coffey said when he startedresearching mustard-making, helearned that it’s the second-mostpopular condiment next to sal-sa. It’s a new craft that he onlypicked up last winter, but nowit’s one of the most popular items

on his shelves.“In the spring, I introduced

five flavors,” he said. “Now, Ihave nine flavors.”

The more popular mustardflavors include chipotle andhorseradish mustards. He saidsome of the more uncommon fla-

vors include a Dusseldorf mus-tard, which is a lot like dijon, buta little more grainy, as well as aroasted seed agave mustard.

“I came up with a product linethat people are coming back forevery couple of weeks,” he said.“It’s been very satisfying.”

Pedaling Geneva

Alocal resident working in downtown Geneva, Illinois ispedaling (both literally and figuratively) for the United Way.

Ken Peters, an AT&T employee of almost 30 years working outof the Geneva Central-Office, was recently voted in as a memberof the Board of Directors for the United Way of Central KaneCounty. Mr. Peters entered a United Way raffle and was thewinner of a New Belgium Brewing Company Fat-Tire Beach-Cruiser bicycle, valued at approximately $650. Mr. Peters (or“Pete” as he’s known to friends and family) designed some infor-mational door-hangers encouraging folks to direct their worksitepledge to the United Way of Central Kane County, and used thebike to deliver them throughout Geneva.

His plan was simple. He pedaled the bike to work and left itthere, and spent 20 minutes of lunch time when possible

up to the start of the campaign (9/10/13), delivering doorhangers throughout Geneva to as many homes as possible.Fellow board members did the same in other neighborhoodsalso served by the United Way of Central Kane County.

“I ’ve been passionate about the United Way all of my adultlife”, said Mr. Peters. “As an AT&T employee over the course

of my career, I’ve had the opportunity to see the United Way dowonderful things to help folks in the communities where I havelived and worked, in large part because AT&T has always been astaunch supporter of the United Way. So when the opportunitybecame available to join the board and work with the UnitedWay of Central Kane County, I jumped at the chance.”

Ninety-four cents out of every dollar collected by the UnitedWay of Central Kane County, remains right here in the

Central Kane County communities. Last year over 13,000 localresidents were helped by way of contributions made throughthe United Way Of Central Kane County, via funding supportthat is provided to several outstanding agencies operating righthere in our neighborhood.

The United Way of Central Kane County is comprised of volunteers with a passionto serve. Their goal is to unite individuals and organizations in a collaborative, cost-

effective way, while addressing the human needs of people in our community.

Innovation has been a trend for sixgenerations at Allegrini.

The Allegrini family pioneeredgrape growing on the Veneto hillsidesin northeastern Italy. Centuries laterthe family-owned winery continued itstrend. In 1998, Allegrini built an entirefacility dedicated to drying harvestedgrapes properly.

A massive innovation for a winediscovered by accident centuries ago.

Botrytis and mold are enemies ofAmarone. When grapes are set to dryfor three to four months, it was once achallenge to prevent the onset of botry-tis and mold. Now, the facility allowsAllegrini to dry grapes at a constant 50

percent humidity.“We have conditions that are almost

ideal to make Amarone every year,”owner and producer Marilisa Allegrinisaid. “We don’t compromise when itcomes to making wine, and our grapesnow dry much better.”

Motivated by the opportunity toimprove the final product, Allegrinihas embraced new technology.

“Everybody was excited,” saidAllegrini, who answered the phone

with a polite “Pronto” greeting on arecent Thursday when reached in Italy.“That’s the miracle of the wine indus-try. We work the land and cellar. Wealso make our minds up to do thingsbetter. That’s what makes the job so funand so exciting.”

Amarone predates the RomanEmpire. According to legend, it wasdiscovered by accident when Reciotograpes were allowed to ferment longerthan usual turning all the sugar intoalcohol.

It is an accident that the farmers andwinemakers of the Valpolocella andVeneto regions have spent centuriesperfecting. Located in the northeast

corner of Italy, Allegrini’s hillsidesand warm microclimate provide theindigenous varietals of Corvina, Rond-inell and Molinara with ideal growingseasons.

“We look forward to the future andmaintain our integrity,” Allegrini said.“Amarone is a very important winewith a rich history. We want to contin-ue to bring Amarone to consumers andkeep our tradition alive.”

Larry theCableGuyheading toAuroraBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

Dan Whitney has gar-nered millions of fansover the years through hisportrayal of lovable redneckLarry the Cable Guy.

Larry the Cable Guywill perform at 5 and 9 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 19, at theParamount Theatre, 23 E.Galena Blvd., Aurora. Tick-ets are available by calling630-896-6666 or visiting www.paramountaurora.com.

Kane County Chroniclereporter Eric Schelkopf hadthe chance to talk to Whitneyabout his illustrious career.

Eric Schelkopf: So, you werein central Illinois recently foryour show “Only In America”on the History Channel. I sawyou came across a farm thatharvests deer pee.

Dan Whitney: That was areally cool story, becausethat was just a couple of kids, and it was just the perfectstory for my show. That’swhat it is about, it’s aboutbeing able to start your ownbusinesses and having theability to do it, having theability to have an idea andbecome rich in the greatestcountry in the world.

ES: The episode kicked offthe third season of “Only InAmerica.” How do you likehosting the show? Do youthink it is a good fit for yourcharacter?

DW: I like it because itshows my character, butit shows me, too. WhenI’m being funny and beinggoofy, I’m pumping Larrythe Cable Guy, and whenI’m talking about somethingserious or there’s somethingnot joke worthy, I’m com-pletely myself.

As you can tell, when I’mdoing that show, half the

time I have an accent, andhalf the time I don’t.

ES: How were you inspiredto develop the Larry the CableGuy character?

DW: I started developingit for radio, and I called inone day, and boom, peopleliked it.

I kind of patterned it aftera likable Carroll O’Connorfrom “All in the Family.”Archie Bunker was hilar-ious, but he was mean. He

was mean to people.I wanted to be like that,

but I wanted to be likable. And that’s kind of how itworked out. I just kind of didit completely for radio, notever thinking that I wouldever do it for stage.

And it just becamepopular. I enjoy it. It’s funto write for. It gives me anescape to enjoy myself andwrite jokes that I love towrite, and it’s just a lot offun.

I grew up on a pig farm ina town of 1,200 in southeastNebraska. So, I’m qualifiedto do redneck and countryjokes, because that’s how Igrew up.

ES: It seems like thingsreally took off for you on the“Blue Collar Comedy Tour.”Did the stars just align rightfor you?

DW: The “Blue CollarComedy Tour” was awesome.I was kind of like the Ringo

Starr. I came along about 11shows later when they got ridof one of the guys. They didn’tthink he was blue collarenough.

And then I joined. JeffFoxworthy and I have beenfriends for a long time, andhe’s still one of my best bud-dies in the whole world.

They wanted somebodyelse that was not onlylike-minded like them, butsomebody who could selltickets. We all played off eachother well.

ES: I’m kind of intrigued byhowwell the character hasconnected with people. “Larrythe Cable Guy: Health Inspector”came out on DVD in August 2006and sold more than one millioncopies in the first week of re-lease. Does it surprise you abouthow people have connected withLarry the Cable Guy?

DW: No, not at all. It’skind of an extension ofmyself, anyway. ObviouslyI know a little of what I’mtalking about because I grewup that way.

No, it doesn’t surpriseme, because I’m a nice per-son, and I’m good to my fans.In the “Blue Collar ComedyTour,” we were regularguys. We were very accessi-ble to our fans.

We’re not in the tabloids. We’re just four guys tellingjokes and having a goodtime. And I think that’swhat people like.

I knew “Health Inspec-tor” would do well. For one,it was a funny movie, and itwas just a movie that wasn’tmaking any political points.

It was just a movie tryingto make people laugh.

ES: Do you have any advicefor people trying to break intothe comedy business?

DW: Just do it. If youthink you want to be a come-dian, you have to go on stageand try.

Minnitimakes voice, presence felt for BHS

SPORTS&REC

By JAY [email protected]

Ryan Minniti is known toraise his voice around Bata-via football practice or in thelocker room as teammatesand coaches alike sometimesare shouted over by the fierydefensive tackle.

Fellow senior AnthonyThielk said the Bulldogs don’tmind the occasional sharp-tongued comments, knowingthey come from the heart.

Minniti, one of the team’scaptains, has earned his soapbox, Thielk figures.

“He’s like the hardestworking, blue collar kid youcould find around here,”Thielk said. “He’s just oldschool. He works his butt offevery day.”

Minniti has been amongthe most disruptive forcesdefensively for Batavia (4-1),which takes on Larkin to-night of Saturday, Oct. 5.

Batavia coach DennisPiron said opponents havemade dealing with the 5-foot-11, 230-pound Minniti a focusof their game plans this sea-son, with minimal success.

“We can’t block him inpractice, and I know otherteams can’t block him, ei-ther,” Piron said. “He’s tooquick off the ball. He’s toopowerful. He can do too manythings to you.”

Minniti had an especial-ly dominant outing on Sept.21 at Streamwood, helpingcompensate for the absenceof fellow defensive line stal-wart James Millette, who isout with an injury. Minnitihad a pair of sacks and a fum-ble recovery in the first half, during which he applied con-sistent pressure to Stream-wood quarterback MasonPolich.

On the season, Minniti iscredited with 12 quarterbackhurries as of last week, topson the Bulldogs’ defense.

“The coaches look to meto take on double teams soeveryone else can get freeand make tackles and makeplays, but obviously [againstStreamwood] I made a few ofmy own, so that was nice,”Minniti said.

One of the team’s mostavid weight room devotees,Minniti said he improved hisbench press from 225 pounds

last year to 285 now, and hissquat is up to 425 pounds.

Given his stocky build,Thielk said some teams don’trecognize Minniti’s athleti-cism until it’s too late.

“His quickness and Iguess agility, I think peopleunderestimate,” Thielk said.“That’s why you’ll see himshoot through holes. Guardsare pulling, and you’ll seehim shoot through and he’llmake tackles in the backfieldbecause people actually un-derestimate his speed.”

Batavia hit a soft spot ofits schedule Sept. 27, facinga winless opponent. Bataviawon, 48-7, against West Chi-cago. Considering that, itmight be Minniti’s leadershipthat has been more importantthan his play as he reinforcesthe coaching staff’s message.

“The coaches have beentelling us we need to have ourtoughest practices to stay atthe level we need to be to beatSt. Charles North, St. CharlesEast, teams like that,” Minn-iti said, referencing upcom-

ing opponents. “Carry it intothe playoffs, so we still havea very high level of practice.”

The Bulldogs have re-grouped nicely since a Week2 home loss to Richards ac-counted for the program’sfirst regular season, varsitysetback since the 2010 season.

“Obviously [Richards]was a big disappointment, but after that loss, it was abig motivation for the restof the season,” Minniti said.“We’re going to keep ontrucking.”

National Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6-12. It’s a good time to review how to prevent iresand also how to be safe when you ind yourself in a dangerous situation. To learn moreabout Fire Prevention Week, visit fpw.org. Here are ive steps to ire safety:

Escape planTalk to your parents and teachers about having an escape plan

in the event of a ire. Knowing how to get out of a building, andpracticing the plan, will help you get to safety more quickly in theevent of an emergency.

Smoke detectorsSmoke detectors can be life savers. They can alert you to a

ire at the earliest point, sounding an alarm that lets you knowwhen to leave the house. But make sure to test them often, be-cause their batteries can run out.

Fire extinguishersFire extinguishers keep a small lame from getting big. Hav-

ing a ire extinguisher easily available in your home can savelives, but you need to know where it is and know how to use it.

FlashlightKnowing where a lashlight is, and keeping

one close to you at night, can help you ind yourway out of a house if it catches on ire.

Kitchen rulesMost ires in the home begin in the kitchen.

Remind your parents to always have a lid to ex-tinguish a ire that happens in a panor in the oven, and to be careful notto wear long sleeves when reachinginto an oven or over lames.
