Editor's NoteOctober is dedicated for vocationalservice, however a vast majority ofclubs also held polio eradicationactivities across the region; accordinglycoverage has been dedicated tovocational training & polio eradicationactivities equally.

Polio: As per WHO report there are only three remaining endemiccountries viz Afghanistan, Nigeria & Pakistan. Pakistan being the

major contributor with 74 polio cases and the majority of theseare from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Recently,India’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhanhas offered assistance to Pakistan’s government in its fight againstthe crippling poliovirus.

Vocational training is education only in the type of trade aperson wants to pursue, forgoing traditional academics. Manypockets of the society are individually contributing to vocationaltraining across the region. Some of the notable institutions include:Fauji Foundation having 65 centers across Pakistan, The HunarFoundation established since Feb 2008 and The AmanFoundation (AMANTECH) established in 2011.

All these institutes offer a variety of courses including ElectricalInstallation, Mechanical Fitting & Plant Maintenance, Plumbing,Fabrication, Welding & Pipe work, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning,Welding and Pipe work, Electronics, Construction Sector (Carpentry,Masonry, and Plumbing), Drafting Cutting & Tailoring (DCT), Hand& Machine Embroidery, Needle Work, Crochet’ etc.

The above are just tip of the ice-berg, there are many moresuch institutes offering a wide variety of courses and othershelping the community on an individual level as well asorganizational level.

Message from RI President

In October 1914, Jonas Salk was born - a manwho would change world history by inventing thefirst effective vaccine against polio. When thevaccine was introduced in the United States in the1950s, polls indicated that polio was one of thenation's two greatest fears, second only to the fearof atomic war. And with good reason: In the 1952U.S. polio epidemic, 58,000 cases were reported,with 3,145 deaths and 21,269 instances ofpermanent, disabling paralysis. Globally, polioparalyzed or killed up to half a million people everyyear.

Soon after the Salk vaccine was created, AlbertSabin developed an oral version, allowingtremendous numbers of children to be immunizedquickly, safely, and inexpensively. In 1985, Rotary'sPolioPlus program was born, with a simple goal: toimmunize every child under age five against thiscrippling disease. Thanks in large part to the initialsuccess of PolioPlus, in 1988 the 166 memberstates of the World Health Assembly unanimouslyset the goal of global polio eradication.

At the time, the idea was breathtakingly ambitious,and many called it impossible. Today, we arecloser to this goal than ever before, with only a fewhundred cases of polio reported per year, and justthree remaining endemic countries. We are on

track to achieve full eradication by 2018 - if wecan keep up the momentum that has brought usthis far.

And this month, we will mark World Polio Day on24 October, and celebrate the 100th anniversaryof Dr. Salk's birth.

I ask you all to Light Up Rotary this month by doingwhatever you can to shine a spotlight on our effortsto eradicate polio. Call your government officialsand let them know that polio eradication mattersto you. Go to endpolionow.org for inspiring storiesabout Rotary's work, and share them on socialmedia. And make the best investment you'll evermake, by donating to polio eradication right onthe endpolionow.org website and earning a two-to-one match on your contribution from the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation.

When we eradicate polio - and we will - we'll havebrought the world into a better future, and Rotaryinto a better future as well. We will have provedourselves, as an organization, capable of greatthings. And we will have given our children andgrandchildren a gift that will endure forever: a polio-free world.

Welcome to the 4th month of the Rotary Year 2014-2015. This month we look at activities / eventsdedicated to polio eradication & vocational service. I am grateful to all clubs and their respectivePresidents, who have given valuable time for theabove two issues facing our country today.

As per information “Pakistan presents one of themost complex polio eradication environments inthe world. The country has reported 246 cases sofar this year compared to 74 in 2013. 86% of thecases are from FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and35% of the total caseload is from North and SouthWaziristan Agencies where no polio campaignconducted. An estimated 290,000 children underthe age of five have not been vaccinated for morethan two years leading to the ongoing explosivepolio outbreak in the region. The number of infecteddistricts has also risen to 31 compared to 20 in2013.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) signedagreements to make sure children are vaccinatedin Pakistan, one of the last polio virus strongholds inthe world. The USD 5.4 million (562 million JapaneseYen) worth grant will contribute to supporting UNICEF’scommitment towards polio eradication effort duringthe period December 2014-November 2015.Japan’s donation will make it possible for UNICEFto procure 15 million doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine(OPV) for mop-up campaigns, 1.3 million doses ofthe Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) for children inhigh risk areas of the FATA and Karachi, 100 solarice-lined refrigerators (ILRs) for districts of KhyberPakhtunkhwa (KPK) and FATA, backup generatorsand temperature monitor ing systems for

strengthening the cold chain at Federal, KPK,Balochistan and FATA vaccine stores. The grant willalso strengthen the vaccine management throughprovision of cold chain and logistic personnel atFederal, FATA and four provinces.

We at Rotary are committed to eradication of poliofrom the world & specifically so from Pakistan, aswe are one of the last few countries where thisdisease is crippling the society. I urge all clubs &members to join hands and commit to cripple poliovirus from the world.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day;teach a man to fish and you feed him for alifetime. - Maimonides

In 1905, Paul Harris organized a new communityservice organization that has grown to be today'smodern Rotary International. To build on theprofessional nature of Rotary, his first priority was tofocus on the vocation calling of prospectivemembers. Vocation has been the cornerstone ofRotary from the beginning, with membershiptraditionally determined by the prospect's VocationalClassification. Today, Vocational Service takes itsplace alongside the four other Avenues of Service(Club Service, Community Service, InternationalService and New Generations).

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serveothers through their professions and to practice highethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders,share skills and expertise through their vocations andinspire others in the process.

Vocational Service focuses on:

l Adherence to, and promotion of, the highestethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees,associates, competitors, and the public.

l The recognition of the worthiness of all usefuloccupations, not just your own or those thatare pursued by Rotarians.

l The contribution of your vocational talents tothe problems and needs of society.

October is Vocational Services month and duringthis month, all Rotarians are encouraged to focuson this avenue of service. One of the Rotary Club'smain area of focus is to increase employmentopportunities in the community, promote a fairworkplace environment, and raise vocationalawareness, all through the development of projectsthat help members of all classifications contributetheir vocational talents. It is the opportunity everyRotarian has to represent dignity and integrity throughtheir own vocations as a way to effectively servesociety.

What is expected from RotariansWhen professionals join a Rotary club, they do so asa representative of their classification -their particular

business or profession.

Rotarians have the dual responsibility of representingtheir vocation within the club and exemplifying theideals of Rotary within the workplace.

Vocational service is both the responsibility of a RotaryCLub and its members. The Club is to implementand encourage the objective by frequentdemonstration, by application of its own actions, byexample and by the development of projects thathelp members contribute their vocational talents.The role of members is to conduct themselves, theirbusinesses and their professions in accordance withthe Rotary principles and to respond to projects whichthe club has developed.

As Rotarians engaged in a business or profession,you are expected to:

1)consider your vocation to be another opportunityto serve;

2) be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the thicalcodes of my vocation, to the laws of your country,and to the moral standards of your community;

3) do all in your power to dignify your vocation andto promote the highest ethical standards in yourchosen vocation;

4) be fair to your employer, employees, associates,competitors, customers, the public, and all thosewith whom you have a business or professionalrelationship;

5) recognize the honor and respect due to alloccupations which are useful to society;

6) offer your vocational talents: to provide opportunitiesfor young people, to work for the relief of the specialneeds of others, and to improve the quality of life inmy community;

7) adhere to honesty in advertising and in allrepresentations to the public concerning your businessor profession;

8) neither seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian aprivilege or advantage not normally accorded othersin a business or professional relationship.

5 Ways to look at Vocational Services

l Vocational Awareness: Increase your Clubsawareness of the scope of vocations. EncourageMembers to give Classification Talks. Visit other localbusinesses for education and recruitment. Providecareer counselling and job talks by members andguests from a range of professions.l Vocational Awards: Develop a local Awardsp rog ram to recogn i ze exce l l ence i nvocation.Recognize local businesses and giverecognition to hardworking individuals, for example,'Pride of Workmanship' award.l Career Development: Support youth throughCareers Days or mentoring programs. Support trainingprograms.l Vocation at Work: Support small businessdevelopment in your local community. Createvocational opportunities for disabled people. Workwith retirees and promote adult literacy programs.l Rotary Volunteers: Designed to create a greaterawareness among Rotarians of the volunteeropportunities available within their own and othercommunities.

Integrity and ethicsOne of the central goals of Vocational Service is topromote and advance Rotary's high ethicalstandards. Two useful tools Rotarians have to assessthese standards are The Four-Way Test and The RotaryCode of Conduct.

"The Four-Way Test" of the things we think, say ordo is a test used by Rotarians world-wide as a moralcode for personal and business relationships. Thetest can be applied to almost any aspect of life.

The Four-Way Test was conceived in 1932 bybusinessman Herbert J. Taylor, a member of theRotary Club of Chicago who served as RotaryInternational president in 1954-55. Having takenon the task of saving a company from bankruptcy,Taylor developed the test as an ethical guide tofollow in all business matters. The company'ssurvival was credited to this simple philosophy.Adopted by Rotary International in 1934, The Four-Way Test remains an essent ial standardagainst which Rotarians measure ethical behavior.

The Rotary Code of Conduct (formerly known as theDeclaration of Rotarians in Businesses and Professions)provides a framework for ethical behavior that allRotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test,in their business and professional activities.
