Aachen

Aachen cathedral

Aachen Christmas market is Germany’s

closest market to Britain. Its speciality is

Printen which is a sort of hard

gingerbread. Children would be

particularly interested in the carousel and

adults would like a glass of mulled wine

and a potato fritter.

Aachen town hall was built on the same foundations as Charlemagne’s palace. It was converted into a baroque building in the 17th and 18th century. Unfortunately it was damaged in 2 fires in 1656 and 1883. There are 50 statues of German rulers on the building.

Salzburg’s most famous film is probably The Sound of Music which is about an army officer and his 9 children. It is a popular destination for films because of its scenic views and its artistic buildings. A lot of the films had at least one scene in the castle because of its scenic views over Salzburg.

Mozart’s family lived on the third floor in Hagenauer House for 26 years from 1747 to 1773.

Mozart was born there on the 27th of January 1756. The house was named after a toy dealer who

owned it and was a friend of Mozart’s family.

It has a magnificent dome and is maybe the best piece of church architecture in the city. It is the most impressive early Baroque edifice north of the Alps. It was burnt to the ground and then rebuilt. When it was rebuilt it was expanded. When the city burnt down, the cathedral also burnt, meaning they had to rebuild it again.

What is it?

Lebkuchen is a German Christmas treat that somewhat

resembles gingerbread. Literally translated it means cake of

life.

Its other names are Honigkuchen (honey cake) or

Pfefferkuchen (pepper cake)

Printen

Printen is a type of Lebkuchen that is made only in Aachen.

Originally pharmacists sold Printen as they thought it

contained healing ingredients – honey and some herbs and

spices.

Ingredients

250 grams of plain flour, 85g ground almonds, 2 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1

tsp baking powder, ½ tsp bicarb of soda, pinch of nutmeg and black pepper, 200ml clear honey,

85g butter, lemon zest.

1. Tip the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Heat the honey and butter in a pan over a low

heat until the butter melts, then pour into the flour mixture along with the lemon zest.

Mix well until the dough is combined and fairly solid. Cover and leave to cool.

2. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Using your hands, roll dough into about 30 balls,

each 3cm wide, then flatten each one slightly into a disk. Divide the biscuits between

two baking trays lined with baking parchment, leaving room for them to expand. Bake for

15 mins, then cool on a wire rack.

3. To ice the biscuits, mix together the icing sugar, egg white and 1-2 tbsp water to form a

smooth, runny icing. Dip the top of each biscuit in the icing and spread with the back of

a knife. Leave to dry out in a warm place.

What are they served with?

German dumplings can be served with

Sauerbraten, oven roasted duck or Rouladen.

In fact they can be served up with almost any

meat as long as it has good gravy.

Semmelknödel

Semmelknödel are very easy to make. Made

using egg and milk, they are related to other

savoury bread puddings such as stuffing, and

like stuffing they are most commonly served

with the Christmas bird.

Kartoffelknödel

Kartoffelknödel are served all over Germany.

They are typical side-dishes for most meats.

They are made from both raw and cooked

potatoes and come from Bavaria.

Mehlknödel

Mehlknödel are made from flour, eggs, salt,

nutmeg and milk. They are served with

onions, gravy, bacon or roast pork.

Buying Tips

As stated on top gear:

“The Boxster is the poor man’s 911, so when you are driving around in one, you are advertising that you cannot afford a 911”

Dan Stevens

The 911

The Porsche 911 is the thoroughbred of the Porsche models. It is exhilarating, powerful and fast. The standard 911 turbo, in a1/4 mile drag race is faster than the Ferrari

458 Italia.

The 4 door models

Porsche is not known for its 4 door models. However, they

are stunning cars.

A LONG TIME AGO

Ever since the two companies started, they

were destined to be competitors. And the

prediction was right. The two ‘brother

companies’ are still competitors and always

will be.

Dan Stevens

THEY BOTH THINK THAT THEY

HAVE THE EDGE

BUT DOES EITHER OF THEM

REALLY HAVE THE EDGE?
