GMAT SYLLABI

The syllabi on the following pages list the math and verbal assignments for each class. Yourhomework assignments depend on your current math and verbal scores. Be sure to readHow toUse These Syllabi before doing your first assignment. Your teacher can answer any questionsthat you might have about which assignment to complete.

Types of Assignments

Prework: Before each class, youll have a pre-class assignment from the manual. Thesereadings and drills prepare you for the upcoming lesson, so its very important that youcomplete them before each class. Answers and explanations are provided at the end ofeach chapter. If you dont have time to complete any other parts of the assignment, getthe prework done!

Manual Homework: These sections provide additional practice with the topics coveredin the lesson. Answers and explanations are provided at the end of each chapter.

Official Guide Homework: Practice what youve learned by working real GMATproblems. The first section is a diagnostic test, and the rest of the guide is divided intosections by question type.

Online Homework: Put together everything youve learned with online tests and drills.Do the assigned drills and tests for each class and use the review feature at the end ofeach drill or test to access explanations. To access an explanation just click on theproblem number from the score report that displays at the completion of each drill. If youwant to review a topic, there are also online lessons for each class.

How to Use These Syllabi

For each class, there are 3 versions of the math syllabus and 3 versions of the verbal syllabus.You should complete the math version that corresponds to your currentmath score from yourmost recent practice test. You should complete the verbal version that corresponds to yourcurrentverbal score from your most recent practice test.

While it might be tempting to do homework based on the score youd like to get, its better touse your current score. Results typically come in stages so youll want to use homework to

build your skills. As your score improves, the syllabus will direct you to questions that will helpyou to make further improvements.

For each version of the syllabus, the homework is divided into two sections: Essentials andSupplemental. This division of the homework will help you to prioritize your study time.Typically, youll want to complete the entire assignment before your next class. If youre facing

a rough few days, however, and have limited study time, do the Essentials. But remember doing the entire assignment will result in a better score improvement.

Heres what youll find in each section:

Essentials. This part of the assignment represents the minimum that you need to do toget ready for your next class and to review what you learned in your previous class. Ifyou do the Essentials, you wont fall behind. The Essentials will always include thePrework assignment, the manual homework and some problems from the Official Guidefor each topic that was covered in your last class. Getting the Essentials done is your firstpriority when you do your homework.

Supplementary. Want more? The supplementary part of the assignment helps you tofurther refine your understanding of GMAT problems. In this section, youll findadditional problems from the Official Guide as well as additional online drills. While theproblems assigned in the Essentials section test material that you just covered in yourprevious class, Supplementary problems test material from previous lessons. Doingproblems that test material from previous lessons will help you to refine and masterskills from those lessons.

A Word about the Course Format

These syllabi are for a course that meets twice per week. Most students describe this version ofthe course as fast-paced. The homework listed on these syllabi has been purposefully kept to a

minimum between class sessions that meet in the same week. As a result, the homework afterevery other class session is more time consuming. That way, you can use a weekend or a day offfor additional study. Practice tests have also been scheduled to take advantage of weekends ordays off.

Nonetheless, youll probably still find the workload challenging. Use the Essentials andSupplementary division of the homework to help you prioritize your study time. Yourinstructor will be happy to provide additional guidance.

Please remember that homework and practice tests are essential to score improvements. Whileit is likely that you will continue to work on some homework assignments after the course hasconcluded, you should also try to stay as current with the homework as possible. That way, you

can ask your instructor about homework questions that gave you trouble. Moreover, youll getmore out of the practice tests if you have done the homework.

Youll be taking a practice test every week which is a lot of work. Plan your time now so thatyou can take those tests. To use these syllabi properly, you need to know your current practicetest score. Your course guarantee also depends on taking all the practice tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which version should I use if I havent taken a practice test?

First off, take a practice test! Taking practice tests allows you to track your improvements andyour weaknesses. You cant address your weakness if you dont know what they are. However,

if you havent taken a practice test, you should assume that you math score is between 35 and42 and that your verbal score is between 28 and 34 unless you have good reason to believe yourscore is higher or lower. Good reasons include things such as your typical performance on otherstandardized tests and past GMAT results.

What if one of my later scores is lower than one of my earlier scores?

First off, be sure to talk to your instructor so that the two of you can figure out what happened.As for the syllabus, you can continue to use the syllabus that goes with the higher score.Remember that a few hard problems early in the test could have been the reason for the lowerscore.

What if I think my first practice tests results may be too low?

There could be reasons why your first practice test results are too low. For example, if you weresick when you took your first test, your results might have been affected. Other factors thatcould cause a low score include interruptions during your test and noisy testing environments.However, the practice tests are generally reliable indicators of your score. So, you typicallywant to use the syllabus that goes with your current score.

What if Im still not sure?

Consult your instructor thats why weve staffed your class with a thoroughly trained,knowledgeable expert.

How to Make the Most of Your Study Time

Do a little each day. Its better to do a little homework each day than a lot of homeworkon one day! If you try to do all of your homework on your day off, at some point, youllprobably find yourself doing the problems just to get them done. You want to learnsomething from the questions. Plus, if you dont start your homework until a few daysafter your class, you may find that youve forgotten some of the approaches that youlearned in class. If you do a little bit of homework each day, youll find it easier to masterthe skills tested on the GMAT. And, you wont spend your whole day off doing GMATquestions!

If you start to zone out, take a break. When you start to find yourself focusing more onjust getting the answer than how to get to the answer, its time to take a break. To

improve your GMAT score, you need to identify and fix your weaknesses. You cant dothat effectively if youre not paying attention to how you approach the question.

Practice the techniques. The methods that you learn in class have helped tens ofthousands of GMAT students improve their scores. Some of them will seem strange atfirst. And, in many cases, they may seem more time consuming. Thats normal. As youget more comfortable with the techniques, youll find that both your accuracy and yourspeed will increase.

Learn to guess. All of your practice questions include explanations. It may be tempting tolook at the explanation as soon as you get stuck. However, when you take the realGMAT, you wont be able to glance at an explanation for a hint. So, before you look at theexplanation, practice your elimination skills. If you cant find the right answer, look forwrong answers to eliminate. Your teacher will help you to learn how to identify wrong

answers for each type of question. Once youve eliminated some answers and made aguess, then its time to look at the explanation. Most test takers need to guess a few timeswhen they take the GMAT. Learning how to guess effectively can give a real boost toyour score.

Keep track of the questions that gave you trouble. Your teacher will set aside some timein each class to discuss homework questions. Keep a list of the problem and pagenumbers of troublesome questions so that you can ask your teacher about them in class.You should include questions that you dont understand even with the explanation,questions that you got right because of a guess and questions that you got right but wantto know if there is an easier way.

Finish any questions from the Official Guide that you were assigned but did not

complete.

Finish any online drills that you were assigned but did not complete.

Take GMAC Test 1 or 2 or both. Go towww.mba.comto find this GMAT Prep test. You

can also follow the links on the online student center.

Try to identify your two biggest math weaknesses and address those by doing practice
