Gluten-free foods: A Key to Good Health

A gluten-free diet has become a popular trend in the recent years. It would not be an exaggerating statement if we call it a ‘fad’. Though more and more people are buying gluten-free foods these days, there are still some people who are in the dark when it comes to the health benefits of a gluten-free diet. Before we discuss the health benefits of a gluten free diet, let us talk about gluten first.

Gluten is a special kind of protein, which is found abundantly in wheat, cereals, and certain grains. Gluten maintains elasticity in foods during the fermentation phase of food production. As a result gluten keeps bread chewy and prevents other foods from having a doughy-like texture.

The major disadvantage of gluten is its potential to cause intestinal damage. The people suffering from celiac disease can have an autoimmune reaction that damages the lining of their small intestines if they continue to eat foods with gluten. As most nutrients in our body are absorbed through small intestines, this can lead to nutritional deficiencies in the people having celiac disease. People who have a wheat allergy can suffer from bloating, skin rashes or life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Also, those suffering with non-celiac gluten sensitivity often experience indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea when they eat diets rich in gluten. Therefore, a gluten-free diet is an ideal option for the people who are suffering from, wheat allergies, celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

In addition to keeping many health complications at bay, a gluten-free diet has its own benefits. Eating a gluten-free diets help in reducing the risks of certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and many other health-related complications if someone is having gluten intolerance. A gluten-free diet improves cholesterol intolerance and increases energy levels in the people with gluten intolerance. When you are going to buy gluten-free foods, make sure you order gluten free-foods that are certified gluten-free by the Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) which has a standard of 10 parts per million (ppm) or have strict allergen protocols in place.
