Defining the AC spirit is something Inever thought Id try to do because ofall my past futile attempts to material-ize this intangible entity.
So what is the impetus for working adultsto donate their hard earned money, more
significantly, entrust their most pricedpossessions, their children, to this in-stitution which they hold dear to theirhearts, their alma mater? What is theforce that holds together more than1000 students in five different institu-tions, that drives and spurs them togreater heights? It is the AC Spirit.
Bearing witness to what it can do isthe easy part because its results areso magnificent, but to put it in words isa whole different affair. Let us take alook at the rugby finals: picture elevenmen in red, blue and gold on one sideand another eleven in green and blackon the other. Three quarters of the field
is fenced by blue and white. From milesaway, the shouts of AC ring clear. Avivid illustration no doubt, but to un-derstand or define the AC spirit at thissuperficial level would be insult to it.
Now imagine if all the AC supporterssuddenly lost their voices and all theycould do is clap. Does losing their voice
and not being able to cheer mean thatthey all lost their spirit? No! Theyll justclap harder, stomp harder, and raise theirfists higher. Continue to imagine thatall of them were suddenly put into
straight jackets and there was no cheer-ing, no clapping, no waving and nomovement at all. Now, would this mean
that the spirits dead? No! The spiritbeats within the heart of each ACSian. It is the love each ACSian has for theschool. In loving the school, we lovenot the building nor the trophies, butthe values. heritage, traditions and mostimportantly, people. Why we cheer isto spur on those fighting on the field.
However, to restrict the manifestationof the AC spirit to enthusiastic cheer-ing would be too shallow. The AC spiritis displayed each time we are together;it is the AC spirit that binds us.
However, AC is not a clique. Thereforethose of you who love the school and
have spent almost a decade in the fam-ily, dont reject or outcast those whojust joined our ranks. Instead, displaythe love you have for the school andlet them bear witness to what the AC

spirit is and hopefully they will one day experience andposses it. Also, AC is not a membership club, those whoenter the family wont automatically have the AC spirit. Therefore, those who do, have the responsibility, not toteach them what it is because it cannot be taught, but toaccept them as friends, and they eventually see what truly
is the AC spirit.
I would like to conclude by trying to state by my verymeager knowledge, what is the purpose of the AC spirit. Itaims to unify every ACSian in love and purpose, and foreveryone to fulfill his or her full potential whether be it inthe academic or sporting arena for the glory of our Godabove. Our purpose is not just to be the best in every-thing, but to be better than ourselves everyday because
The Best Is Yet To Be.

Orientation 2002Orientation. What comes to your
mind when you think about the word?Fun, laughter, silly games, outrageouspranks, strange unfamiliar environments, new acquaintances, embarrassingmoments? Well, ACJCs orientation 2002was definitely all that and more. It wasalso about the passion and spirit thestudent leaders had for AC which ledthem to spearhead the orientation, toinculcate that same spirit and passionin the J1s. Hence our theme this yearwas The spirit never dies, and trueto the themes origins, the orientationgroups [OGs] were named after crime-fighting action heroes eg. Thundercatsand Wonder Woman.
After the customary talks by the
Principal, Vice-principal and thePresident of the 26th Students Council,Orientation 2002 opened with amarching display of the OG banners anda spectacular dance performance bysome of the orientation group leaders
[OGLs]. The first day of orientationbegan with a series of talks, subjectregistration, photo-taking and ice-breakers, with hardly any time for abreak in between. Each day began withthe screening of a video clip filmed andproduced by the OGLs, informing theJ1s of their various missions and whatthey could expect in the day ahead. They were duly entertained in theprocess, by the sights of their OGLs
acting as deranged evil-doers, mentally-unsound criminals, vampy boyfriend-stealers and even as hapless bishops. Not forgetting, of course, the thoroughlymemorable sight of the 26th StudentsCouncil President lip-synching and

dancing to the 80s disco hit I willsurvive. The J1s were put through agrueling schedule, so that the OGLscould use the time they had to impartvital survival skills, knowledge, traditionsand values to the juniors. Cheeringsessions were also held to introducethem to the many catchy and upliftingcheers the college had. Tele-matches,treasure hunts and wet games wereorganized in the name of good clean
fun and to get the J1s awake againin the late afternoons, especially forthose struggling to adapt to the longcollege hours. With activity venues allaround the school compound, it alsohelped the J1s get familiarized with theirnew surroundings.
Few J1s can profess that they wentthrough orientation without dancing a
single step of their mass dance. EveryOGs schedule included at least an houror two of mass-dancing everyday. Thisyears mass dance was choreographedby one of our very own studentcouncillors to the suave, upbeat tunesof Jordan Knights Give it to you andSmash Mouths Diggin your scene. The sight of the entire cohort boogying
down on the field during their finalmass dance session was truly a grandsight to behold.
Orientation 2002culminated with thetraditional Campfireon the last night. Theatmosphere waselectrifying aseveryone was treatedto a myriad ofperformances put up
by not only the OGs which got throughthe campfire auditions, but those of thedrama club and dance society. At theend of it all, photos were taken, hugswere given and received, some tearseven flowed. As the OGs graduallyheaded off to Newton Circus for supper,it was time to store the fond memories
of Orientation 2002 in their hearts andlook forward to making even more inthe next two years of their lives inACJC.

Probably the most memorable event in anyJ1s time in ACJC would have to be the firstfew days when they walk through the schoolgates and into a brand new chapter of theirlives. Those first few days of gettingaccustomed to their new surroundings, offorging new friendships and of course, gettingorientated. This years orientation theme wasThe spirit never dies, a tacky, whackyconcept aimed at letting the J1s have as muchlight hearted fun as possible, yet at the sametime learn about the vibrant AC heritage andculture which they have inherited.
However, behind all the fun and joy we sharedduring those four days, are weeks and weeks
of preparation and hard work, especially bythe Orientation 2002 ad-hoc of the 26th
Students Council. Logistics and planning wereunderway right after the promotional examsrequiring ad-hoc members to stay back afterschool for long meetings. From orderingorientation packages to sorting out OGs, fromplanning daily programmes right down tosoaking fire wood.
At the same time, two of our fellow councillorswere busy choreographing the mass danceto the new grooves of Give it to you by JordanKnight and Digging your scene bySmashmouth. Before long, OGL interviewswere held and 43 sporting individuals wereshort-listed for the honourary role. Their firsttask was a rather monumental one. Knowing
the mass dance like the back of your hand injust a few short sessions. I for one can stillfondly recall the dance studio being packedto the max. and everyone struggling to followPamelas lead.

Three days in December were put aside forthe entire Orientation Team 2002 to do dryruns for the actual event. It was a time whereOGL partners first met each other and gotacquainted. Banners were painted, prototypegames were put on trial ( for example, howcaptain papaya got turned into captain aqua, the original plan was to use papayas to playcaptains ball and not water bombs but we
soon discovered it was way too messy ). Themuch enjoyed orientation videos whichalthough add up to about seven minutes ofviewing time, took up to as much as two anda half weeks of planning, acting and videoediting. As the days flew past and orientationdrew nearer, volunteers from TeamOrientation 2002 came back to school to putup banners and rehearse the opening dance
sequence one last time. Before we knew it,the day was upon us. Months of preparationhad finally lead up to the very day itself,Orientation 2002.
As the new JC1 batch strolled and shuffledthrough the school gates, OGLs eagerly gaveout postcards and welcomed the fresh batchof recruits and what followed next is allhistory.
The original plan was to usepapayas to play captains balland not water bombs...

Seniors Night 2001
Such was the apt title for the night of De-cember 5th that many had been waitingan agonizing 2 years for. It was a nightowned by the Beautiful People, an eveninggraced by the constellation of demi-godsand goddesses who deigned to make anappearance at the Ritz Carlton. It was truly
an unforgettable experience for this humblereporter, seeing the normally drab/harried/(dis)stressed seniors in school, morphing forone night into beautiful shapely nymphs.Gentlemen were dressed to the nines, andthe ladies wore sweeping gowns that ac-centuated their graceful figures. Indeed somarked was the change that some of them
could not recognize their own friends.
Like any good evening function, cocktailand light refreshments were served from6pm onwards, and everyone was seated

by 8.30pm. Entertainment was provided by some of our own students who formed alive band. Dinner was sumptuous, and satisfied even the most discerning of palates. But it was the entertainment that captured the attention of the crowd. As always, theevents that evoked the most raucous applause and wolfcalls were the prizes for bestdressed people, the funniest joker.and most prestigious of all: Mr. and Miss. ACJC.
Yet even as the night drew to a close initial exuberance was replaced by a sense ofnostalgia and camaraderie, as friends drew together to reminiscence about days goneby. Perhaps some realized that metamorphosis meant more than just the closing ofone chapter of their livesit heralded the beginning of a new one.
