Market WatchThe economy is showing signs of a deepening recovery and the market is reac ng with a bullish tone.

The Federa l Open Market Commi ee (FOMC) decided to trim their $85 billion/month bond purchasing program by $10M star ng in January reducing it to $75 billion a month. The tapering is expected to reduce the price of crude oil; however a stronger economy could off set the price reduc on.

I n D e c e m b e r, t h e E n e r g y Informa on Administra on (EIA) released its Annual Energy Outlook 2014, expressing op mism about con nued growth in U.S. oil and natural gas. The EIA projects West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices to decline during 2014 averaging $95 per barrel.

However, some prominent sources are projec ng as much as a 9% increase in the price of oil over 2013, so exactly which way prices might go this year remains to be seen.

Did you know? The total daily oil consump on around the world is 84,249,000 barrels a day!

As early as the year 1013, Wells were drilled in China for natural gas, which fl owed through bamboo pipes. The gas may have been used in manufacturing porcelain, cooking and hea ng.

Just about everything you do on a computer requires you to log in. Whether you are checking email, logging into your bank account, streaming music, or catching up with friends, you will be prompted for a password. This ar cle will help you understand why a strong password is important, what a strong password is, and give a few techniques for crea ng easy to remember, but strong passwords.

Why Are Strong Passwords Important?Passwords protect your personal informa on and data from criminals who try to hack in and steal your informa on. Hackers use automated programs to try to crack your passwords. Once a hacker has access to one of your accounts, they will con nue to target you. A Strong Password prevents intrusion.

What Is a Strong Password? A strong password is one that is hard to guess and hard for hackers to crack. For a password to be strong, it should follow these criteria:• Be at least 8 characters. (10 is recommended)• Contain at least 3 of these types of characters: uppercase le ers, lowercase le ers, numbers, and special characters.• It should not be a single dic onary word. Example: “extraordinary”• It should not contain sequen al number or le ers. Example: “12345” or “abcde” or “qwerty”• Do not use the same password for everything. Customize the password you use for the service you are logging into. Example: Add words and characters like “bank$” or “3mail” or”tw! 3r”

Strong Passwords Tips:This sec on will give three examples on how to create a strong password. While these passwords may seem diffi cult to remember and type at fi rst, there are techniques that will help them stay in your memory. For mobile devices (touch screens), try to keep le ers, numbers and special characters grouped near each other to make typing easier.

Four Core Password Method1. Choose two words at least 4 characters, a number at least 3 digits, and 3 special characters.

Example: brother, book, 1983, ;-]2. Put these words together in whatever order you would like. Example: 1983brotherbook;-]3. Customize your password for the service you are logging into. Example: 1983brotherbook;-]bank$4. Enhance your password or change it regularly by switching the order and holding shi at diff erent points in the

password. Example1: BROTHER1983book;-]bank$. Example2: ;-]bookBROTHER!(83bank$

Write a Sentence and Then Make It FUNk331. Start with a sentence. Use a poem, nursery rhyme or quote. Example: jackandjillwentupahill2. Customize the password for the service you are logging into. Example: bank$3. Put it together: jackandjillwentupahillbank$4. Make it funky. Press shi at random intervals, change le ers to special characters, misspell words, and add numbers. Example: 15jackandjillwentUPah1llbank$5. When it is me to change the password, change the numbers you added and special characters you subs tuted. Example: jackANDjill69wentupah!llbank$

Abbreviate a Long Sentence1. Start with a long sentence. Example: The dog barks at the squirrel in the tree2. Choose one word from the sentence. Example: barks3. Only use the fi rst le er of every word (except for the word you choose in step 2). Put them together.

Example: tdbarksatsi 4. In the word you chose in step two, subs tute lowercase le ers for uppercase le ers, numbers and special characters.

Example: Td8@RK$atsi 5. Customize the password for the service you are logging into. Example: td8@RK$atsi bank$6. When it is me to change the password, do so by choosing a diff erent word from the same sentence and then

subs tu ng uppercase le ers, numbers and special characters. Example: Choose “tree”, tdbatsit7[3E

Check Your Password StrengthOnce you have created a password, check the strength using Microso ’s free service www.microso .com/en-gb/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx
