PRINCIPALS REPORTAs you know, this will be my last speech at a presentation night at GHS. In 2017, I will be working with Principals of Primary and High schools in the role of Principal School Leadership or PSL. The PSL’s role will allow me to work closely with individual Principals and with groups of Principals around the Coffs Harbour area, and sometimes further afield. The focus will be on collaborative dialog, professional support, critical peer reflection and mentoring. I am excited about what is in store, and appreciative of the importance and relevance of this position for Public Education across the state. Mrs Trudi Edman will be relieving in the Principal’s role, with Mr Mik Wisely continuing on as relieving Deputy Principal. The school could not be in better hands.

Gloucester High School is a great school. I knew that even before my first day in January 2011. The school’s reputation was well known around the traps. I had worked first hand with GHS staff members, including Mike King, and knew about the great things that were happening here. So I was chuffed when I found out I’d got the Principal’s position. I still have two abiding memories of my first assembly: firstly, I remember thinking “Where are all the kids!?” and secondly, I remember being approached by three Year 11 boys who shook my hand firmly and said “Welcome to Gloucester!” Since then, my opinion of the school and all those within it has been confirmed and enriched. Fantastic things can happen in a small school, when the kids are as enthusiastic, open and positive as ours are, and when the staff are prepared to go the extra mile to provide opportunities both within and outside the curriculum. So I take this opportunity to say “thank you” to everyone involved in our school community, both this year and for the past six years. You have made my journey an exciting and fulfilling one, and I have loved our time together.

Thank you to my teaching staff. I will miss your professionalism and willingness to innovate, reflect and enhance your practice. To my great support and administrative staff – I thank you for your tremendous hard work, your sustained professionalism and your friendship. I am continually thankful for my hard-working executive. I have appreciated your capacity to lead strategically, work as a team and always hold the best interests of students at your core. I consider myself lucky to have worked with you. To our School Admin Manager, Chris Moulds, your support, clear thinking and considered judgement really have made my job a pleasure. To the dynamic P&C team, thank you for your ongoing commitment to the school and its students. You are a great bunch, and should be proud of the work you do. To all those who volunteer within our school, I offer my sincerest gratitude. The confidence you instil in students often makes the most difference. To my colleague Principals from the Bucketts Way Community of Schools – I have really enjoyed working with you, and am proud of what we have achieved.

Worthy of particular mention are two men who have been a consistent and formidable part of Gloucester High for many years. We have already said “Goodbye” to Mr Mike King, but I would like to again thank him publically for his inspiring work over many years at this school. I spoke earlier about reputation, and Mike has a lot to do with this. Our best wishes also go out to Mr Greg Leighton, who will be taking extended leave from the end of this year. Mr Leighton has made a profound difference to many students over his time at the school. He has taken leadership roles in organising the successful Trichallenge event and the mammoth job of organising our school’s academic reports. Greg’s rapport with students is second to none. He is respected by all within our school community and should be proud of his high quality work over many years, both in the classroom and as a member of the school’s leadership team. All the best to Greg and Kaye in their next chapter together.

Finally I would like to publically acknowledge my wife Karen and my two boys, Jack and Charlie, who have traipsed around the state with me. And, Karen, here we go again! Without your support, the job would have been impossible.Education is all about teaching and learning. Over the last six years, I have taught a bit and learnt a lot.

I have taught students how to use a compass, how to plan a bushwalk and how to get ticks out. But I have learnt just how resilient kids can be in the face of freezing horizontal rain and exhaustion. And I have learnt to stay at least three metres away from Laura Dunlop when she uses a metho cooker!

I have taught students the basics of song writing. But I have learnt what it feels like when the kids you teach make one of your songs sound better than you could ever imagine!I have taught everything from Year7 Mathematics to Extension 2 Mathematics but I have learnt that this doesn’t mean a thing if you can’t get one of Lachy McLeod’s brain teasers out!I have learnt that Deb Hogan can go from “quietly collaborative” to “insanely competitive” with the simple introduction of a pack of cards and the word “euchre”!I have taught a bit about collaboration and cooperation, but have learnt a lot about the power of student voice, distributed leadership and authentic contributions to school excellence. Most of all, I have learnt that being a part of Gloucester High School has been a privilege, a pleasure, and an experience that I will take with me forever. I offer you all my sincerest thanks for accepting me so warmly. I look forward with great anticipation to hearing what these great students will be doing with the rest of their lives, and I hope that they remember our time together with the fondness that I know I will.

Cheers, and Farewell!Pat Cavanagh

A SUMMARY OF THE P&C’S YEARWe have raised about $20,000 over the year, most of which is proceeds from the canteen. I would like to thank the volunteers for their help and the families that purchase from the canteen. We need more volunteers to help at the canteen and if there are any parents or carers who could assist, please contact the canteen in the new year to arrange a suitable time.

The P & C has donated about $9000 to the school this year to help improve our children’s education. The funds have been used for an online maths programs, English homework books, presentation night prizes, canteen vouchers for students, subsidised barista training, stockyard panels for the ag farm and musical instruments. The P & C have also assisted the school with BBQs for the Y6 transition information night, the Trichallenge night and STEM night.

Our project which we are working towards is the airconditioning of the hall. We have already put $20000 aside for this project and hope to put another $10000 towards this early in the new year. It would be great to have it functioning by this time next year.

We are very sorry to see some of our teachers/executives leaving this year or going on long service leave, but we wish them all the best with their new endeavours. We will certainly miss Mr Cavanagh at our meetings who kept us up to speed on what was happening at the school but congratulate him on the way he has lead and managed the school. His friendly and happy nature, even when under pressure, was appreciated by all.We are always hopeful for new members and it would be great to see you next year at a P & C meeting.

QUICKSMART 2016Our QuickSmart students ended their year with a celebration last Wednesday 7 December. Ten students participated in the program this year, with eight of them completing it. Two students, who commenced the program later in the year, will take it through to completion in 2017.

The program will continue in the same format in 2017. Students identified for inclusion through PAT Maths assessment will be withdrawn three times each week to work with Mrs Schumann on basic Maths skills. Elements of the program will also move into the classroom in 2017 for all Year 7 and Year 8 students. This is expected to become a regular component of each Maths lesson.

Many thanks must go to Julie Schumann for her hard work and commitment to the program this year. She has done a fantastic job once again.

READING PROGRAM 2016A morning tea was held on Wednesday 7 December, to thank our volunteer reading tutors for their ongoing commitment to the school’s reading program which caters for students in Year 7 and Year 8. These wonderful people give up two hours of their time each week to work with our students and promote a love of reading. Some of our participating students were away on an excursion, but those present enjoyed the opportunity to chat with their tutors over soft drink and some of Mrs Cameron’s delicious cooking. We look forward to running another successful program in 2017.

BREAKFAST CLUBThank you to IGA for funding our Breakfast Club this term, Gloucester Hospital for the orange juice and Sheryl Tester for volunteering your time. Also, thank you to Wendy Burton for organising the volunteer students and managing the Breakfast Club program three mornings every week.

Year 10 2017As we approach the end of the year we would like to congratulate Year 9 on completing another year of their schooling. The New Year brings a number of changes, including Ms Corbett accepting the position of Head Teacher English/HSIE. Ms Corbett will no longer be the Year Advisor for 2017/18. Congratulations to Miss Tess Nolan who was successful in her application to take on this role.

Year 10 Shirts -2017Year 10 students are provided with an opportunity to order year shirts as part of their school uniform. The style of shirt is very similar to their current shirt: short sleeved, sky blue polo shirt with twin navy stripes in the collar and sleeves and navy front panels, 2/3 button with School emblem/Year 10 2017 embroidered on left chest in navy. The students’ names will be screen printed in navy on the back with a great border designed by Sara McBride that represents each of their elective subjects.

To ensure the shirts are here in time we need to determine numbers and sizes of the shirts we order before the end of term. The available sizes are: 12Y, 14Y, 16Y, S, M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL (these use the same sizing as their current school shirts). The cost of each shirts is $29 and needs to be paid to the office in full by the end of Term 1, Week 1 2017.

If you have any queries about the shirts or would like to contact me as your child’s Year Advisor please call GHS on 6558 1605 or email me any time at [email protected].

Diverse educational programs that challenge and inspire students

What’s happening? From 20 December 2016, the Private VehicleConveyance (PVC) subsidy will be progressivelyphased out and replaced with the new SchoolDrive Subsidy. This change will make it fairer for everyone whodrives their children to school or to the nearestpublic transport location. If you’re a parent or guardian currently receivingthe PVC subsidy, you can choose to stay on it orswitch to the new School Drive Subsidy after17 January 2017.

What are the main changes? If you’re driving one or more eligible students fromthe same household to the nearest public transportpick up point or to school, the new School DriveSubsidy will be paid ‘per trip’ (for the completeschool trip). This ‘per trip’ payment is different fromthe current PVC subsidy, which is paid ‘per student’.

Other differences include:• A flat per kilometre rate (indexed annually to the cost

of living) will apply under the SchoolDrive Subsidy, unlike the flat payment per distance band in the current PVC subsidy.

• The requirement to do a special return trip each morning and afternoon will be removed.

• The 300km per trip payment cap will be removed.• The limit of eight trips per year for distance education

students to attend mini-schools during term time will be removed.

• The PVC subsidy rates will remain at 2017 levels in 2018 and beyond.

• Payments to third parties will stop (e.g. payments to a bus operator hired by parents from pooled PVC subsidy payments).

How do I check which scheme is better for me?Check the comparison calculator at transport.nsw.gov.au/schooldriveWhat do I need to do?If you want to stay on the existing PVC subsidy, you don’t need to do anything. Assuming the school trip doesn’t change, your payments will continue for all existing students until they leave school or until you need tore-apply because a student is moving up to ear 7 at high school. If the school trip changes because you move homes or the student changes schools, you will need to re-apply under the new School Drive Subsidy.

Remember, you can’t re-apply for the PVC subsidy after 20 December 2016, but you can switch to the new School Drive Subsidy at any time after 17 January 2017.

If you want to switch to the new School Drive Subsidy, apply online at transport.nsw.gov.au/schooldrive Just like the PVC subsidy, payments will be made twice a year, around August and February, based on the student’s school attendance for the preceding semester. The online application process only takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. If you don’t have access to the internet, feel free to call 131 500 for assistance.

After you’ve applied and been approved for the School Drive Subsidy, payments will be made automatically into your bank account twice a year.

You won’t have to re-apply until a studentreaches the end of Year 6, or until you nextupdate any details — such as a change of school, school trip or address.
