PRINCIPAL’S REPORTGHS students have had another very successful year across all key areas of learning and in many varied extracurricular activities. Thank you to the families and friends of our students who attended GHS annual Presentation Night. The students who excelled within their subject/course in each cohort are acknowledged with academic awards. Awards were also bestowed upon students who demonstrated consistent effort and improvement. Students were also acknowledged through sports awards and CARER awards.
On behalf of GHS, I would like to thank all of our families and community organisations who encourage and support student success by sponsoring and presenting awards and who have supported teaching and learning programs throughout the year.

A THANK YOU LETTER RECENTLY RECEIVED.
A
WE WISH YOU
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A
HAPPY NEW YEAR
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued.........Our HSC results were released today, 13 December. Once again, I am thrilled with the results. We had 36 students sit examinations. From this number, 4 of our students achieved 10 Band 6 results and 19 students achieved 34 Band 5 results and a student came 5th in NSW for one of her subjects. There were a number of students who missed out on a Band 5 by only 1 mark.
Thank you to the dedicated staff at Gloucester High School. We have a fantastic team consistently working for your children. Our teachers are supported by: our office staff, our learning and support staff, agriculture and maintenance staff, P&C and canteen manager/helpers and volunteers. This genuine team effort is reflected in the results achieved by our students, your children. Everyone here has a vested interest in ensuring our students are supported academically, physically, emotionally, culturally and spiritually.
I wish our students, their families and staff of GHS a safe and relaxing holiday. I look forward to 2019 and welcome parents/carers to be involved with our P&C, school canteen and in volunteer helper programs.

HUNTER REGION UNDER 15’S NETBALL SEMI-FINAL 2018On Tuesday 20 November, the Under 15’s Netball Team competed in the Hunter Region Super 16 Semi-Final Netball Gala Day at the National Park Netball Courts in Newcastle. The Gloucester girls made it into the Top 16 teams in the Hunter. The team consisted of: Keira Macdonald, Keely Yates, Eden Parker, Laura Stone, Sarah Redman, Anita Jackson, Tanai O’Brien, Ella Howe and Natalie Rayner.
The girls played two full games. The first game was played against Lambton High. It was a tough game and Lambton’s experience proved too strong for us. Gloucester played Maitland Grossman in the second game. It was a very close contest and both teams enjoyed playing against each other.
All girls played extremely well in both games. Kudos to our tireless defenders, Keely and Natalie, who worked well together in the circle. Laura and Sarah worked well to advance the ball down the court and some great intercepts were made by Keira and Anita. Tanai, Eden and Ella continued to display excellent shooting ability. They displayed exceptional determination and good sportsmanship skills that Gloucester is well-known for. Congratulations girls on your achievements.
A big thankyou to Betty Pearson for umpiring and to our supportive parents transporting and cheering our girls on. What a great day!

Y10 VISIT TO KIMBARRA LODGEOn Tuesday 11 December, a group of Year 10 students, accompanied by Miss Ross, visited the Kimbarra Aged Care Lodge. As part of the Year 10 History topic, Popular Culture, students sat down and had afternoon tea with the residents as they talked about their experiences throughout the decades. Tallulah, Emily, Umi, Bronte, Alyssa, Patricia, Lillian, Leon and Jasmin asked the residents, Tom, Betty, Neville, Cath, Jean, Stein and Gwen, a range of questions and recorded their experiences, significant events and perspectives. We are going to collate their stories into a booklet for both the Lodge and school library.
URGENTLY NEEDEDIf anyone has school uniforms in reasonable condition that they no longer require, please deliver to the school office as our emergency supplies are running low. Thank you.
MAKE SURE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS ARE UP-TO-DATEParents/carers, if you have changed any details e.g. your address, mobile phone, home phone, email address or emergency contacts, please make sure you let the office know in the New Year so we are able to keep an accurate record. It is important for us and your children that we are able to contact you in case of an emergency.

YEAR 9 PHOTOGRAPHYThese art works were produced by Year 9 for their recent assignment. Students produced some exciting images using large format negatives in the darkroom, utilising the wet photographic process. This process is quite unique as it cannot be replicated on a computer even though the image is are edited further after the wet process to add colour. Initially the original photo is composed from photos from the students’ archives which are overlayed in Photoshop, made into a negative, printed through a laser printer onto a transparency then exposed and developed in the darkroom.
Great work Year 9.Mr Chris Steele

SAFETY TRAINING FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRY STUDENTSIn late November Years 11 and 12 Primary Industries classes undertook a week-long course at Taree TAFE to gain skills in tractor and ATV driving. The students completed core skills in their HSC Primary Industry course. These students are now well equipped to use the tractors and ATV’s in a safe and professional manner and are able to drive a variety of different year model tractors both old and new to equip them with the ability to use different tractors that they may face out in the real farming community.
During a dinner one night, we discussed how difficult it was for schools to prepare animals for steer shows on limited school budgets. Geoff Turner, the head teacher of the Agricultural Department at Taree TAFE and Laurie Gallagher the Agricultural teacher offered 10 bales of silage to GHS. The silage was loaded by Matty Johnson who kindly came over to load it onto a Denell Transport truck and kindly offered to cart it back to Gloucester. The students are now able to feed the steers that they are preparing for the Wingham Beef Week which is in May 2019. Preparing steers for local hoof and hook competitions requires many hours of preparation, feed for stock, transport of both feed and stock and dedication from the students. Through local community support the school is able to continue this program for the students at Gloucester High. The students love preparing animals for shows and the donations of steers is very much appreciated by everyone involved in the program.

TRY – A – TRADE DAY 2018Approximately 57 Year 9 students participated in the 2018 Gloucester High School Try-A-Trade Day (TTD) on Wednesday 5 December. The activities were organised to enable students to participate in ‘hands-on’ experiences.
Several months ago, the students completed surveys to indicate what kind of work they wanted to experience. Based on this information, local employers were contacted and arrangements were made to conduct some of these activities on TTD. The sessions allowed students to engage with professional workers within the industry, ask questions, perform basic tasks and/or observe the daily operations of a business. Some employers gave students ‘a tour’ of their facilities which created a very realistic view of how a particular business operates.
The Try – A – Trade Activities included:
Industry DetailsRetail Several retail students worked in various roles at Gloucester IGA, Circle of Friends and Elk and Willow.
They worked with staff and acquired an understanding of what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ in the retail industry.
Bucketts Radio 104.1 FM
A handful of students learned the ropes in the radio industry. Shane Holstein, gave the participant’s the opportunity to put playlists together using software and then they went on air live. It was certainly an interesting experience for these students, and if they want, they can speak to the Radio Station about having their own regular session.
Beef Farming Due to the large interest in beef cattle production this year, students were divided into two groups and worked for the entire school day on either Merewether Farm with Jamie Andrews or Peter Webeck’s Bundook Road Farm. They spent most of the day working in the yards, marking steers and tagging. They were an outstanding and impressive group of future farmers.
Fitness Four lucky girls spent the day with Michelle Craven-Gunn at Pure NRG. They assisted and engaged in exercise classes, performed some general clean-up duties and were simply active for the entire day. This was the first time students nominated and participated in this kind of activity for TTD and Michelle did a wonderful job giving the girls a taste of the industry.
Disability Two students spent the day working with residents at the Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group’s Cottage. They were involved in a variety of activities and assisted clients with making Christmas ornaments.
Outdoor Recreation and Fitness
Two students spent the day with the BOAC team, predominately kayaking on the river. They weren’t discouraged by the rain as they were wet anyway.
Beauty & Nail Therapy
Five students spent the morning in a Beauty Make-up taster here at GHS under the supervision of Kellie Warwick. During the afternoon session, they learnt about nails and nail therapy with Daniella Hollis. It was an introduction to the requirements and techniques needed to work in these industries.
Age Care Students were engaged for the entire day in various activities at the Gloucester Memorial Soldiers Hospital. They worked with some residents and genuinely enjoyed their experiences.
Childcare Two separate groups attended a session each at Gloucester Pre-School and Barrington Pre-School and Long Day Care. This group of students thoroughly enjoyed their day and loved meeting and getting to know some of the children. Many of these students are looking forward to completing Work Experience in the childcare industry next year.
Industrial site / Metals
During the morning session students followed plans to measure, cut and shape a piece of metal at Leveltec Engineering. The staff were very helpful and offered sound advice on success within the industry. In the afternoon, students went on a tour of DRIFTA Kitchens. Later in the afternoon they attended a seminar conducted by the Civil Contractors Federation of NSW about the opportunities in this rapidly growing industry.
Dairy One student spent the entire day at Forbes Dairy. The student had a long day assisting during both the morning and afternoon milkings. She enjoyed the work and has a realistic understanding of how difficult it is.
Diverse educational programs that challenge and inspire students
TRY – A – TRADE DAY 2018 continued........Most students were able to come back to GHS for a free sausage sizzle and an unhealthy soft drink. Thank you very much to Mrs Donaldson and the SRC who did an amazing job cooking not only for Year 9, but also for the Year 6 students who were at GHS for an orientation day.
Try-A-Trade complements the Gloucester High School Careers program and provides present-day, realistic information so students can more successfully navigate their career path by making informed, planned and thoughtful decisions. It’s a great prelude to the Work Experience Program which will take place at the end of Term 1, 2019. Many students will hopefully have a better idea of where they want to (or don’t want to) complete Work Experience next year.
This is a very unique opportunity and a privilege that is only possible due to the support from the local business community and volunteers. Gloucester High School would like to extend a huge thank you to Gloucester IGA, Circle of Friends, Elk and Willow, Jamie Andrews, Peter Webeck, Leveltec Engineering, Barrington Street Pre School and Long Day Care, Gloucester Pre School, Gloucester Soldiers Memorial Hospital, DRIFTA Camping Kitchens, Pure NRG, Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group, Forbes’ Dairy, Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre, Kellie Warwick, Daniella Hollis and Bucketts Radio 104.1FM for making this day a huge success.
