NEW QUARTER With September’s arrival, we started a new quarter in our Bible Classes at Gloster Street. On Sunday morning, there are four adult classes—including our college age class—to choose from; on Wednesday evening, there are two options. Additionally, we have classes for children of all ages, beginning with our Cradle Roll class. I’m thankful for the effort each teacher makes to promote our Bible school. If you are not currently attending a class, now would be an excellent time to begin. SPEAKING OF CLASSES… The Wednesday night adult class meeting upstairs will begin a study of Discipleship on Wednesday, September 4. I’m looking forward to discussing what Scripture says about this important topic. Throughout the study, we will consider hindrances to discipleship, aids to discipleship, and the demands of discipleship. We will also discuss how to grow our faith, our ability to study, our prayers, our fellowship, and a variety of other areas. I hope you will consider taking part in this important study. READ JEREMIAH Our congregational reading this month is focused on Jeremiah. Although his life was difficult, he faithfully followed God and proclaimed His message to a rebellious people. The call to Follow the Lord remains as powerful today as it was in the days of the prophet. As we saw from Jeremiah 1, we must follow the Lord even when we feel inadequate. May God Bless You All! NEW QUARTER With September’s arrival, we started a new quarter in our Bible Classes at Gloster Street.

Consider One Another

Chad Ramsey

We live in what could be described as a “consumer society”—a society in which our economy and social interactions are driven by what we purchase. Consequently, we evaluate the things we buy carefully and select only those items we deem valuable or beneficial. This careful approach is also utilized in determining the activities vying for our time. If an activity does not suit our tastes or skill set, we reject it in favor of one more convenient or personally fulfilling. Because our time is limited, we do not think twice about avoiding situations we believe will provide little or no obvious benefit to our family members or ourselves. Although the idea of evaluating purchases or activities to see if they are worthwhile seems quite reasonable in one setting, it is possible we have taken this consumerist mentality too far. Rather than leaving this approach in the realm of economics, it is applied to both the church at its activities. Individuals, who should be looking for ways to serve others, think too quickly about whether they will be personally fulfilled in so doing. Individuals, who should be seeking to encourage and edify their brethren, think mainly about whether they will be encouraged by engaging in a certain work or by attending a certain activity. Individuals, who should be making an effort to teach their friends and neighbors the gospel, expend very little effort in learning how to do so. Sadly, these same individuals sometimes criticize the church for failing to provide activities, programs, sermons, or Bible classes to meet their needs. Obvious problems exist with applying a consumer mentality to the church. Namely, God has not called us to focus exclusively upon our own needs. Instead, He expects us to concern ourselves with others. Writing to the Philippians, Paul warned: “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4, NKJV). Christians must not be characterized by selfishness. Thus, we must possess a genuine concern for those who are in physical need (Galatians 6:10), for those who need spiritual encouragement (Hebrews 3:13), and for those who need to hear the gospel (Romans 1:16). There will times in which putting forth an effort to meet the needs of others will require that we place our own needs on the back-burner.

The point is simple: Christians should be considerate of one another. Rather than only asking whether engaging in a particular work or attending a particular event will be personally edifying, we should also give thought to whether our participation will provide a boost to someone else. This is surely what the author of Hebrews had in mind when he wrote: “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24). Above all, we must remember the church has many members but is still one body (1 Corinthians 12:20). As members of this great body, we must learn to think and act for the good of others, not merely for own sake (Galatians 6:1-2). Perhaps Paul put it best in 1 Thessalonians 5:15: “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.”

JUST FOR FUN The Prophets in the Old Testament are not in chronologic order, so understanding some history helps one to understand the context of what they are reading. Answer the following basic questions to get some of the history fixed in your mind. 1. After the nation of Israel divided, who were the first kings of both nations? 2. The northern kingdom, consisted of how many tribes? 3. The northern kingdom was usually called Israel, but became known by this prominent tribe’s name. 4. How many good kings ruled over the northern kingdom? 5. The southern kingdom consisted of how many tribes? 6. It’s name also represented what prominent tribe of this kingdom? 7. Which kingdom went into captivity first? 8. Who were the captors of the first captivity? 9. How long did this kingdom stay in captivity? 10. Who were the captors of the second captivity? 11. Concerning which kingdom was Jeremiah writing? 12. How long would this kingdom stay in captivity?
