TIME TO WAKE UP!
byChadRamsey
As Paul addressed the Christians in Rome, he wrote: “And do this, knowing the time, that
now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first
believed” (Romans 13:11). Paul, of course, did not mean to imply that the Romans were actually
sleeping. Instead, he was simply encouraging them to be more alert to their spiritual needs. So
what did he tell them to do?
Recognize that today is the day to serve God. Paul wrote, “The night is far spent, the day is
at hand” (Romans 13:12). With those words, he set forth a fact that should be obvious to all—
none of us have the promise of tomorrow. Since life is truly like a vapor (James 4:14), we must
serve God while we have the opportunity.
Recognize that wickedness must be cast aside. By likening man’s choice between right and
wrong to putting on a garment, Paul illustrated what those who are spiritually awake must do. He
wrote: “Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light”
(Romans 13:12). His instructions went on to show that those who do this must live in the way
that God has prescribed. He continued: “Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and
drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy” (Romans 13:13). Surely those who
are spiritually awake will see the need to cast wickedness aside.
Recognize that obedience to Jesus is necessary. Paul concluded: “But put on the Lord
Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts” (Romans 13:14). Continuing
to use the analogy of a garment, Paul urged his readers to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” In order
to do this, one must certainly obey the Savior. After all, we cannot call Him “Lord” if we are
unwilling to do what He says (Luke 6:46). It is time to wake up. Serve God today, shun evil, and
obey Jesus!
